The Hidden Puzzle Song came to me as an idea of writing a song that gives clues to its origin, in this case who the inspiration is. Being the sneaky songwriter that I am I didn’t put in clues. I'm pretty sure I didn't at least. My intent is for this song to be for each person who listens or reads, and for everyone to feel this song is specifically for them, because it is. I’ll get a scratch up soon…hopefully before I forget how to play it, which also can be puzzling for me.

The Hidden Puzzle Song by Jeff Gilpin

December 22, 2018

Intro strumming C

[C]I’m writing this little song for you

[G]Even though no one knows.

[Am]I’m letting the words just come

And letting it [F]go to where it goes.

[C]Oh, I guess I’ll try and keep this song

[G]Somewhere between the ways I feel,

And [Am]try to put in words you can relate to,

The [F]only way I’ve found to keep it [C]real. [C7]

[F]Maybe one day you’ll get to [C]hear it,

Or [Am]maybe you’ll hear other songs of [G]mine.

[F] Whatever song of mine you get to [C]listen to,

I [G]hope you’ll find it’s not a [F]waste of your time.

-    Solo on verse chords C - G - Am - F -

[C]I’ve written songs for all occasions

[G]Ranging from the happy to sad tears.

I’m [Am]sure there’ll be plenty more to follow

As I write [F]songs to describe my [C]years.[C7]

[F]This one is special just for [C]you;

Al[Am]though, I feel you will not [G]find.

A [F]secret that will help you [C]guess

[G]Your identity [F]hidden in the rhyme.

[C]Maybe someday you might hear this,

Or [G]maybe you might just never find

This [Am]song, that you may never listen to,

Or [F]might discover in your time.

So here it [C]is, my song in all it’s splendor,

[G]Written on this day just for you.

You’ll [Am]only know who it’s written by,

But [F]not my inspiration [C]who. [C7]

[F]Led me to put these [C]words down,

[Am]But without mentioning your [G]name.

[F]If you ever find out who this [C]song is for

I [G]hope you’ll still remember [F]me just the same… [CMaj7]

Changed the chords a little to fit how I'm playing it today....12/23/2018

Hey Ken - Thanks for checking it out and nice hearing from you. That A-Bm7 thing was how I got this song started as an idea in my head, but I had to figure out what the actual chords were that I was hearing in my mind....took a while, but after that it started to flow. Then I had to come up with some complimentary chorus chords, but that was a bit easier. I do agree that weather and life songs are fascinating, and I too have written a bunch.

Thanks you all. TF -  Nova Scotia sounds like it has some more interesting weather swings than northern Virginia.

Singing about Weather by Jeff Gilpin

12/8/2018

[A]Singing about weather

[Bm7]Thinking about you

[A]Singing the songs

[Bm7]Just something to do

[A]Weather don’t change

[Bm7]Just keeps coming

[A]Thinking of you

[Bm7]Switch from singing to humming

There’s [D]something about you

You [E]stay on my mind

[F#m]I find you there

Most [G]any old [E7]time

Cloudy or sunny

Rainy or cold

Weather don’t do

What the weatherman told

But there you are

Rain or shine

Like the tap of my toes

You’re keeping my time

There’s something about you

You stay on my mind

I find you there

Most any old time

Sunny up north

South getting snow

Weather don’t know

Which way to go

I wish you’d come

Straight back to me

Straighten my thinking

Set my mind free

There’s something about you

You stay on my mind

I find you there

Most any old time

Thanks Jan. It is a bit a sad song with with regret. Folks may be able to relate to the "You Can't go Home Again" aspect..

Thanks for your comments EB and Pete. EB I hear you. This song is not like some of the songs I've written lately. Pete - I know the song lyrics talks about the girl that was left behind, but really to me the girl that was left is the mountains, or that place where you grew up and remember fondly from long ago. But the dream of going back is just a dream because in reality you can't really go back there, to the place from your past, because if you do you'll find a much different place. The place you remember will have changed and is nothing like what you remember.

I wrote this a while back and finally got around to recording it. It plays pretty simple, verse chords are DFCG  a couple of times for each verse and then the intro chords of CGFD - CGFG after playing 2 verses...finish just on repeating the first verse again but throw in a D at the end, after the final G chord.

Back in the Smoky Mountains By Jeff G

1/2/2016

.

Intro – C G F D - C G F G

.

[D]I went and [F]left my girl

[C]Back in the smoky [G]mountains

[D]Of all the [F]things that I done

[C]That one takes the [G]cake

.

For ‘bout near all my life

Since I’ve left those mountains

I feel like I’ve been hamstrung

And happiness I fake

.

C G F D – C G F G

.

For she was pretty as

The sunset in the springtime

Sweeter than mountain moonshine

My fondest memory

.

And though I’ve been away

My memories grow fonder

Of all my time down yonder

And I still long to see

.

C G F D – C G F G

.

So now I’m of a mind

To go back there to see her

Refresh my fading picture

To see what time has done

.

And when I gaze upon

That smoky mountain beauty

I know that she’ll still be

She’ll be my only one

.

C G F D – C G F G

.

Repeat 1st Verse…end on D.

Hey Jim. Thanks for putting Close Your Eyes up. As you know, I mostly do my songs, but I really like your song and you asked, so here is my version. I hope you like it: https://soundcloud.com/jets60/close-your-eyes

Thanks you all for the comments. I have to tell you all that I am still trying to remember how this one goes. I should have recorded it back when I wrote it. Now I'll have to play around and try to figure what I was thinking back then. Once I get a good idea I will get it posted.

Wonderful song Jim. I just played it how I think it goes and it just flows. Words bring up thoughts of a love that's lost but not forgotten. Great job! Adding this to my covers.

smile Well I'm glad I could start you down that path...I'm a Steve Earle fan, but I need to listen to some more of JTE's music; although, I have heard a few. I was playing one of my favorite TVZ songs, For the Sake of the Song, just the other day. So simple yet so very complex...both the meaning of the words and how Townes sings and plays the song.

Hey Jim - I do remember this. The words really flow and I can hear Townes singing it in my head.

Thanks Poppy - I wrote this around 6 and a half years ago while I was in the middle of finishing my masters degree and I was also out of work. Thinking back, I feel like I was just blowing off steam and stress between classes, and I was very worried about my future. Now, a few years later, I am all done with formal education. I am satisfied with my song as written,  but thanks for the offer.

Every Little Thing You Do By Jeff Gilpin

8/19/2018

Verse 1

[Dm]Words sometimes e[Bb]vade me

[F]When I think of [C]you,

[Dm]Searching and [Bb]searching

To des[F]cribe the things you [C]do.

[Dm]Simple things all [C]through the day

I [Dm]see when you’re a[C]round,

And I [Bb]ponder all the [F]things I see,

And [C]try and write them [F]down.

.

Your [Bb]easy ele[F]gance,

Your [C]casual [F]care,

Your [Bb]ways of doing [F]everything

That [C]you are una[C7]ware

Can [Dm]capture my at[C]tention, and

Make [Dm]me forget the [C]time,

And [Bb]seems to e[F]vade my

Trying to [C]put it down in [F]rhyme.

.

Be[C]cause you are a poem,

A [Dm]living work of art.

[C]My eyes are always drawn to [Dm]you.

[C]Sometimes unexpected

[Dm]Giving me a start

In [C]every [Bb]little thing you [F]do.

.

Verse 2

I [Dm]see you when you’re [Bb]reading

Lost [F]in some writer’s [C]realm.

[Dm]Then sometimes I’ll [Bb]catch your eyes

A[F]bove your glass’ [C]rims,

And the [Dm]look that you [C]give me then

De[Dm]pending on your [C]mood

Can [Bb]swing from love to [F]anger, and

[C]Yet I still in[F]trude on your,

.

Your [Bb]easy ele[F]gance,

Your [C]casual [F]care,

Your [Bb]ways of doing [F]everything

That [C]you are una[C7]ware

Can [Dm]capture my at[C]tention, and

Make [Dm]me forget the [C]time,

And [Bb]seems to e[F]vade my

Trying to [C]put it down in [F]rhyme.
