Thanks, Neo ... I've downloaded RiffStation and will give it a test run this evening.

Hello, Helen ... and welcome to Chordie! I looked up The Deans on YouTube, and found a 3-piece group out of Ireland. If this is who you're talking about, they certainly are very good.

Thanks, CG ... I like the idea of knotting the unwound strings first, to save the extra wraps needed by doing it the conventional way. It should also help to eliminate string slippage. I've had success with a fishing knot I use called a "Davy Knot". It's quick, simple, non bulky, and doesn't slip. I use it for tying on dry flies to my leader tip, so they don't have a bulky knot impairing the fly's ability to float properly. In the video, just imagine the holes in the bridge taking the place of the hook's eye on the fly:

SOME OF US

The air begins to move, the breeze becomes the wind
Then it stops
Takes a break
And begins again
Some of us caught in the vertigo cycle of stuff unsettled.

The times begin to change, old clock and new culture
Out of synch
Makes me think
Of abandonment
Some of us resembling table scraps of nothing done.

The life begins to die, as soon as it is born
One of many
Always isolated
Faking a legacy
Some of us trying to make a futile and unwanted difference.

The tomorrow comes and goes, as soon as it concludes
Always ahead
Out of reach
The will quits
Some of us looking for another substantial unfamiliar home.

Don't read into this too much ... just some thoughts about starting and stopping repeatedly.

After re-tuning my D'Adarrio Pro Arte's for the umpteenth time yesterday, I went looking for somewhere to buy the Labella 2001's online in Canada. Our fellow-Chordian Classical Guitarrecommends them for their tuning stability, and I'm frustrated with everything else I've tried. Thankfully, I found a place and have ordered a couple of sets:

Thank-you, CG, for your positive feedback about how well these work ... can't wait to try them!

There's lots of Lynyrd Skynyrd on Chordie ... just need to pay attention to the band name's unique spelling:

Very good stuff ... he comes across as a bit "high brow" at times, but the essential message is right on point.

What's constant is that now (as in the past) the mainstream media doesn't play quality "musician's music" over the airwaves. Non-musicians (the majority) can't really appreciate what they're hearing, so "popular music" has to appeal to the masses to generate revenue. But there are also some very encouraging trends:

1) there is still a LOT of fantastic music being made
2) thanks to YouTube, it's a lot easier to find than it was in the 60's and 70's
3) good musicians tend to have longer careers than recording artists
4) good music doesn't require trashy hype to be enjoyed

Thanks for posting this link, Neo ... really gets the brain going (always a good thing!).

Awesome selection! They're not only enjoying the music, they're enjoying one another's company. I really like the comment made below by Stewart Nicol ... amen to that!

Camel    "Stationary Traveler"    Santa Cruz, 2003

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfF2UZjXx_g

A very expressive and soulful instrumental from Andy Latimer, who pours enormous emotion into his playing which a listener can really feel. It's interesting that this was considered to be a "farewell tour" as Andy was becoming quite sick at the time. He had a rare form of blood cancer which was thought to be incurable, but he eventually employed conventional and holistic means to come out of it for the better. It's also worth noting that he has removed the tremolo bar from his Strat, and uses beautiful vibrato technique with his fretting hand instead. He also does some old school volume knob swells at the end ... terrific player. Tom Brislin joined them on keyboards for this one, who also played with YES on the their 2003 "Yes Symphonic Live" DVD, filmed in Amsterdam. This song is from their 1984 LP of the same name.

I  like his great clean playing and  enjoyed listening to him. Makes me wonder if he first played a classical guitar and migrated to a steel string. From what I read about him he is from Germany so not a lot of biography on him. Happy New Year to you TF,

Cheers, CG ... Happy New Year to yourself as well. I've really enjoyed your regular participation in the Forums, and your considerable technical expertise over the past year. You're a real asset to Chordie!

I certainly agree with what Peatle and Easybeat have said. Popularity is no indication of quality, but simply how marketable some people feel a song could be to the masses. There's a lot of great music that isn't popular, and a lot of junk that is. I admire you for entering and being willing to take the risk ... very courageous!

Same here, Bill ... there's something about a great pipe tune that really opens the tear ducts. Thanks for this!

So fun! I just had a thought: since you go by Beamer (as in a beam of light) could we refer to your son as "Son Beam"? lol

Reverse discrimination is the prevalent flavor these days. In our Province's capital city (Halifax), some people put posters up around town this past October, simply saying "It's Okay to be White". The media made them out to be vicious white-supremacists ... talk about over-exaggeration!!! The human race is becoming a house divided against itself, and I sincerely wish I could share the optimism in your song, CTECH. Good work, nevertheless.

What a great way to spend an hour, Badeye ... thank-you! If anyone comes close to Oscar Peterson's touch on a piano, it's Memphis Slim ... sooooo smoooooth. Hope ya stay safe & warm, and a very Happy New Year to you and your household.

From one old man to another, Happy New Year, Arkady!

Another gem along these lines is FireBallet's 1975 album "Night on Bald Mountain". They were a short lived group (only two albums) but this is great rendition of another of Mussorgsky's works:
