I should have had the camera with the window behind it. I tried it at night with the lights on in my room and it turned out pretty good, better than my Canon camcorder anyway.

This isn't the answer for a interface device or a studio quality recorder, it is just a great little unit for making youtube videos or taking to jams or recording your practice. The sound quality is the same as the H2 recorder , I have been told. I'm gonna try a bunch more different things with it and see how it works.

Nela,

Sounds like she was a little used and abused. If you keep a look out I'm sure another will turn up. You have a good guitar to play so things could be worse. I am always lookin but seems the pawnshop guitars here are usually very low end guitars and really beat.

Howdy,

I recently purchased a Zoom Q3 handy video recorder and just did some messin around with it.  The thing is as user friendly as it could possibly be and it records pretty well. I had the dishwasher going upstairs while I was recording and the humidifier was running in the next room and I thought I would give it a try.

You can hear in the video it adjusts the mic levels as the music changes volumes. I recorded with a flatpick with no amplification and a thumbpick with guitar and vocal amplified.  Also without a pick with no amp on guitar or vocals. I had the Q3 about 6 ft away on a camera tripod and made no adjustments throughout. The amp was around 1/3 volume so the mics really cut the volume back.

The little unit does a really nice job of recording audio, it has two small condensor mics. My room has ceramic tiles on the floor so it has kind of an echo. I recorded in my living room and I thought the sound was better. It is supposed to get pretty nice the next couple days so I will try and get a recording outside.

This little unit retails for $ 250. and I am very happy with it so far. The software that comes with it is not very good and I used another program to edit the start and finish. I am using Roxio Creator and I think you could do the same with Windows Media.

I have a friend that plays in a band and he has been using his to record and his band is loud and the mics haven't allowed any clipping during recording. I apoligize for my struggling vocals my sore throat and cold don't wanna go away.

Amy,

Colours by Donovan is a song my daughter Maria and I used to sing and it is a good one for get togethers. Don't know if Donovan was thinking of Black is the Color or the history but we liked to sing and play his version ,from a CD I had. I couldn't find a youtube clip like the recording , but Here's one with Donovan and Joan Baez.

Thanks Mrjay,

I have a love hate relationship with this guitar, sometimes I get so frustrated with it and other times it is the best. If you don't use a flatpick or a thumbpick with it the bass seems to take over. I am starting to learn how to control it a little more.

Thank You everyone for your nice comments smile

Papa,

It's just cheap entertainment and all but a few have come and gone. If you aint got it you aint got it and most of them have been just average Karaoke singers.

Some are dedicated musicians, but most were singing in the shower and then decided to go try out smile

Mkm

You better get over fear of singing in front of others, because the longer you play guitar your family will start thinking hey she's not too bad. They will first ask you to play a few songs at a barbeque and then it will be a wedding. Then your friends will want you to play at some weird gigs. It's gonna happen smile

One of my weirdest,

My mother inlaw is a Norwegian and has a friend that is also and they have an annual Lefse making party. They also make homeade wine. I was asked to play while they had dinner and later made lefse. Alot of wine was consumed by all and my music went over too good.

My sister inlaw didn't know I could play so well and got a little too huggy and ended up having to get carried home. Lefse making is very messy with all the flour used and all the hugging ,I still had flour in the all hard to get places on my guitar for years smile

Lefse is Yummy smile

And if your audience drinks enuff Homebrew, "You Can Be A Star"

I've found it more enjoyable since they have allowed contestants to play an instrument.

I also support my local music store and our Open Mic and coffeshop and try to get to 3 to 4 Bluegrass Events a year.

I know what Southpaw is saying and I respect his views. A karaoke DJ can earn as much and more than a liveband and It's a blankety, blank shame . I have bought all but one of my guitars at  Music Stores and most of them are very competative on guitars and amps. I buy strings online, using several guitars on a regular basis I go through alot of strings. I just can't justify paying 3 times as much at the local shop.

I hope I don't get beat up,

I watch it and am just amazed year after year and repeatedly tell my wife you could go to any high school choir and find better singers for the most part.

Crystal Bowersox is the exception, she plays guitar very good and does it with ease and that is who she is a acoustic guitar playing singer songwriter.

No one ever told Bob Dylan, Neil Young , John Prine and on and on to put the guitar down and quit hiding behind it. When Ellen and Kara , Judges on AI told her that you can tell they don't know squat about folk music and folksingers.

Even if you don't watch the show, you should check out Crystal Bowersox, she has got it figured out, what a great performer !

Thanks Selso,

That's a very nice compliment, but John Prine is really something special and better guitar player than I'll ever be. I just love to play his songs and it's up to us  folk players to keep his great music alive.

Hopefully you'll be playing his songs for the next 40 yrs and maybe your kids will be playin them  the next generation smile

Heya Gabby,

When I was doing alot of buying and trading, I always used around 1/2 of the whatever the street price was new as kind of a reference for used stuff.  Supply and demand has alot to do with it too.

I checked with musicians friend on what they would give me for a DR Rhythm and the offered me $ 50  and it is a current model. I sold it on ebay for $ 150  and it cost  $350 new. You may want to check with a music store, if you know of a good one and ask them what a fair price is.

This song  argues the point , Poems are not Songs,

I cannot relate to having a poem or song come to me that has the magnitude of something like this,

Hello Everyone,

I have been looking at different recorders for awhile and would like to share a look at the Zoom H4N. There has been alot of talk on some other forums about how good this little unit is. It is a four channel portable recorder. The reviews I have read by some users claim you can get studio quality audio with it.

When you look at the features it is a pretty neat little unit. 2 of the channels are for the 2 built in condensor mics and the other 2 you can use additional mics or plug in other units. It can also be used as a interface and comes with software Cubase Le 4. It is around $300

I was lookin at the Zoom Q3 that is also has a video camera and good audio. After some research I found out  the Q3 has audio similar to the Zoom H2 , one of the first recorders they had on the market.

With 2 quality built in mics and 2 additional channels , being portable and an interface, the H4N looks like a nice unit. A fella from another forum did a review on it here's the link.

I have a DVD on order that has instruction for the "Richland Woman Blues" and other Missippi John Hurt songs and  it is by John Sebastian and Happy Traum. It's just a three chord song with an alternating bass line, but I want to get some of the tricks down that John is using. His playing really impressed me and I am gonna try to get it down,

Sorry Geo,

I wasn't bashing Takamine guitars, I just sold one recently and I still have one.  I kinda got off topic a little, but I have been playing alot of guitars lately and I have played a lot of solid wood guitars that have been really nice and they are affordable.

I have played alot of Takamines and like Pix says a good acoustic amp is very important. Most of the takamines I have played have sounded better plugged than unplugged . They are known for their good electronics.

There are alot of good Acoustics on the market and I have played quite a few lately that are solid wood and most were made or assembled in China.

Some with very good tone and are  affordable.

1 Blueridge                Some of these solid wood models, you would think should cost more.

2 Crafter                    I played one of these yesterday a Dread mohagany back and sides that was really nice

3 Epiphone Masterbilt  I have a Mahogany DR-500MNS  they also have one with a solid Rosewood back and sides that is really somethin

4 Recording King     I haven't played this one yet , but hearing good things.

5 Guild                    The american made guilds aren't much more than the Chinese and both are good

Most of these are in the $500-$600 range and I would play them anywhere.

Solid wood Acoustics is where it's at smile

Heya Selso,

Welcome home,

I have become more of an acoustic nut. For me and alot of folks, I would never buy another acoustic electric if it had a hole cut in it and a square piece of plastic for electronics stuck in it. I own a couple ,  and I like them, I'm just saying, Alot of folks are after a pure acoustic sound and usually add a pickup that does not have an effect on the acoustic sound when unplugged.

I don't want it to sound snobbish but seems the more we play the more we try to find a natural, balanced , acoustic sound.

Heya Badeye,

My wife turns 50 this year also, but I think she's gonna stay 49 forever or maybe 39. I have a 1960 model wife , I also have a 1960 HD Duo-glide and I should be horse whipped for selling my 1960 Gibson ES-125.

I word of advise , You best not call her "The Old Lady" anymore . My young gal would slap me around if she knew I even thought about it smile

Hey Tony,

Awhile back we had a chordie member having trouble , with strumming and BensonP had put up a link to video with some strumming on it.
This video breaks this song down as good as any I've seen on Youtube , it takes a couple minutes into the video to get to the meat and tators but this is an excellent video on how to break a song down.

Good for you Detman,

You are a dedicated guitar player and I'm glad your doing well. The church stuff will work itself out or maybe you will move on to something bigger and better.
