Re: Beginner 6 String (11 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
You know, you could just string the 12 as a 6 string..... Now harm in it and it gives you more finger room.... All you have to do is remove the other 6 (smaller gauge) strings and you're good to go.

Thanks Dude for the scale breakdown
Here's a little write up I posted sometime back on fretboard radius that may be helpful to any that don't understand it.... http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=13839 Also includes a link to free printable radius gauges.

Re: Hard or easy? (15 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Scale length and fretboard radius! You're A&L is 24.5 scale length (shorter scale means less tension to string to pitch thus easier fretting) and I imagine the ones you can barre easier on have more radius/curve to the fretboard.

Sounds great Zurf! I plan on attending and I may lengthen my stay to a week or so to coordinate some more events
By chance do you know any public 4x trails that are close by? I'm currently putting a new lift on my '93 xj (along with some more mods) and would love to do some trail riding while I'm in that area I know of a couple of national parks fairly close by that have great orv programs but thought you may know of a few less popular trails I'm not aware of being so familiar with the area....

I found this tune a few hours ago and have enjoyed picking it, figured I'd share.... http://www.youtube.com/user/Guitarpixx? … OYU7Zf0t6E Thought it was catchy and easy to pick up...
Don't know if any of you know who Jason is but he wrote "Bubbly" and "Realize" for Colbie Caillet back when they were a couple. A lot of his stuff is too "poppy" for my taste but I liked the above tune and "Treefall" by him.... Treefall's here if your interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRAQbq3OVDY

Re: What about the smell? (20 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I have 4 guitars that smell like mold. I don't keep them in cases anymore. I'm hoping that smell goes away with the extra ventilation!
You can put an adore absorbing (unscented) fabric softener sheet in the accessories compartment of the case when storing them and it should go away. Helps get rid of cigarette odor too. Just figured I'd throw that out there in case a good airing out didn't get rid of it...

Re: Nothing Matters, and What if it Did: What your guitar says about you. (28 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Sorry Pix,
I cannot agree about solid wood guitars being overrated. I have played some very nice laminates and still own a couple but to me there is a natural wood tone missing from laminates. I love solid wood back , sides and tops. I am not saying you have to break the bank on a solid wood guitar. I don't care if they are America, Chinese or elsewhere. Solid wood guitars are where it's at!!!!!!!!!!!
That's cool Wayne That and the neck joint statement I expected some to disagree with... I could throw out loads of technical data but it probably wouldn't help (Just meaning it's hard to sway people about these things with technical data...) I think where a lot of it comes in is that at the price point of "good" Solid wood guitars you also get into better voiced tops but most of the credit goes to the woods when it's really better construction, bracing styles, and build quality... I think "laminate" is often misunderstood. I'm not talking cheap plywood like most associate with it. The good laminates are made from 2 or 3 sheets of solid woods glued with hide glue. They age like solid woods but are more stable and consistent, still adding that woods tonal color to the guitar.
Now please keep in mind I said "overated". I'm not saying they're bad just that people put too much stock in having a solid wood guitar. Give me a quality laminate (back & sides) that has been tap tuned and voiced over a solid wood guitar in the same price range (or higher) off a production line that hasn't been any day!!
Love discussing/bebating these things

I'm in for either event you choose This is right up my alley! I've got tons of camping gear as well and can help outfit some if needed. I have a few tents with one being a huge 3 room cabin tent that will easily/comfortably house 12 people or 3 families still allowing privacy, even has a large sheltered screened in porch for the drizzly spells if any.... I'd love to throw the boat on the old jeep, pack it with gear and head your way Just keep us updated!
Not sure if you'd be interested Zurf (or any other chordians) But a few picking friends and myself always head up to Chocowinity, NC on the Neuse river to a place called Blounts creek fish camp in the spring. Some of the best bluegill fishing to be found and the camp is real laid back. A huge community shelter is by the river where everyone gathers at night for music and conversation until whenever (no curfew or alcohol restrictions). Love to have you or others join us if so inclined.... Not really a Chordie gathering but an annual event for me and I'd love to see a few chordians in the area drop by... Tent camping is available for $10 a night or cabins for only $25 ($30 if you want ac)... Just figured I'd mention it....

Guitarpix,
Point #2, "solid woods (back and sides) are overated", is particularly refreshing to me as I've battled this one. I currenly own two all-lam guitars and one all-solid (or maybe the back is laminate, some debate on this).
Are you familiar with Antonio de Torres, the father of the modern classical guitar? He was a top shelf luthier that believed the top was by far the most important factor. To prove this he built a guitar with paper- mache back and sides...
Now we don't have that guitar to listen to but David of the "Official Luthiers Forum" built a replica using cardboard for the back and sides and you can listen to that guitar here... http://www.guitarsbydavidlaplante.com/a … eplica.mp3 I just thought you'd find that interesting Sounds darn good to me

I had a ball guys It was great seeing Tops and his family again and meeting Toots and John! Got a chance to play Tops CA and man it was sweet! It had the smoothest neck I've ever held and had amazing bass! Loved Toots vintage Gibson as well! That things got some stories to tell and tone to die for! You could just feel the "Mojo" It was awesome having toots on the horn playing along while me and tops took turns with songs. It's amazing how well it accompanies and how much it adds to the tune. I imagine the person playing it has a lot to do with that Both Tops and toots did many songs (and did them well ) that I wasn't familiar with and really enjoyed, so I picked up plenty of material to work on Loved all the comedic songs Toot's is a great performer and really draws your attention pulling you into the songs story! Looking forward to future gatherings and meeting more chordians in the future!
I think the vid turned out great Especially since it was the first time we'd ever played the song together It was the first time in my life playing the tune so I know I made a few boo boo's I think the vocals were fine and the "tuber" sounded great. I had a blast!
The wife also had a great time even with the game going against her... She really enjoyed meeting both you and your wife and had a great time! Thanks again for the fine food, great company, and awesome music

The only guitar I've ever regretted selling was my old Taylor 314e
Of course the choice is yours but I think the taylor is an awesome guitar and the size and shape works very well for fingerpicking but still handles a good strumming Sold it to buy my first D18..... What a mistake that was

Re: Bluegrass Rhthmn and Chord Formation (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
It may seem intimidating but believe me it's really quite simple... Tackling the things that we think are out of reach is what moves us forward
Just take your D chord fingering (xx0232), now just slide that up 2 frets (xxx454 Just strum the fretted strings) and you have E, move up one more to 565 and you have an F, etc...

Re: Bluegrass Rhthmn and Chord Formation (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
D is a movable chord and he's giving you the fingering for a movable A. Using these two fingerings up and down the neck will cover most of your chords (think of them as barre chords). You'll see a lot of bluegrass players using these, especially when doing lead runs. Not sure if that answers your question or not.... If not let me know what you're needing explained and I'll try to help...

Re: Need advice about little finger (11 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I think wrist angle helps a lot here as well. Be sure to keep your thumb at about the middle of the neck instead of wrapping it over (if you are). You're palm should almost never touch the back of the neck.... Doing this will improve your angle of approach to the fretboard allowing for easier reaches and cleaner chording... Just a thought

Re: Future NGD (16 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Enjoy the search Zurf Are you more of fingerpicker or flatpicker?
I'm sure you're aware of this, but be sure to pay attention to the strings on the guitars you're trying out... Comparing guitars strung with different gauge strings can be deceiving, especially when looking for bass and volume... Not to mention new vs old strings, etc.... If you get it narrowed down to two or three I'd ask for them to be strung fresh with the same before deciding. Almost all music stores will do this when asked.

Re: Nothing Matters, and What if it Did: What your guitar says about you. (28 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I'm almost embarrassed to say how many guitars I've owned...... It's very close to (if not over) 50 with 22 being the most at one time. I don't have any good music stores close by so if I wanted to try a model, I'd buy one (used usually) online and play it for a few months and either put it away as a keeper or resale it. There aren't many brands/models that I haven't tried at one point or another (that I had interest in)... A few of the brands that have visited are takamini, ibanez, epiphone, garrison, indiana, ensenada, morgan monroe, Alvarez, Yairi (S & K models), Art & lutherie, Seagull, Simon & Patrick, Norman, Gibson, Eastman, martin, taylor, and even a Sitka/EIR Santa Cruz dread.... Probably left out a few but you get the drift.... Now I'm not rich and am not naming off all these guitars to boast... But just to say where I'm coming from...
Here's my take on what I've learned after owning all these. Remember, this is only my opinion and is based on what fit's me and my style of play. I'm sure others will disagree and that's cool
- Money doesn't buy tone
- Solid woods (back and sides) are overrated
- Solid tops almost always sound better
- The best bang for the buck is found in the sub $1000 category
- Made in China should no longer be a bad omen ( though they should be shopped carefully)
- Bracing of the top has more to do with the tone than the woods used (don't get too hung up on Eir vs Hog vs BRW vs Tas Blk )
- Some of the best values are coming out of Canada
- Playability will effect your tone much more than you would think
- Guitars should be bought based on tone first with playability a close second
- Cosmetics shouldn't be a real factor when shopping (Though it does help )
- Guitars with voiced tops will almost always sound better than production guitars with precut bracing
- Neck joints don't affect the tone as much as some like to believe
- Strings and picks play a huge role in the tone of any guitar!!
I could keep going but I'll stop there Like I said these are only my views.....
After all this experimenting my favorite guitars are Yairi's (Kazuo Yairi) from the early 70's to early-mid 80's, Second place goes to the Showcase line from S&P, and third would be Taylor.
Currently I own 8. Five are Yairi's, 2 are older S&P Pro models and the other is a newer S&P Showcase. I'm seriously considering selling my S&P's and becoming a straight up Yairi man Don't be surprised to see a few pop up in the classifieds this weekend
I have no idea what my guitars say about me..... 95% of my music is laid back and chilled though
Sorry if I missed the point and carried on a bit -Chris
