SouthPaw41L wrote:getfiddle wrote:I agree with stevie ray. The Doors did alot of music based poetry. I have some Doors Cds where Jim Morrison did poetry while background music was playing. How do we explain that? But I'm glad we have the poetry section! So all is good. My 2 cents!
Very easily explained. Music + lyrics+= song. Lyrics + no music = poetry.
Then by your own reasoning, A person who sings songs with no musical accompaniment is only reciting poetry! They might differ with you on that one!
Singing is music. I guess I needed to be more specific.
Music + lyrics= song. Spoken lyrics + no music = poetry
The song was originally recorded in the key of B. But the song was played in the G shape progression with a capo on the 4th fret. Many people that play this fine tune play it in G. So if this suits you the intro would be G w/fills*, C ,D, G.
fills*; a series of G chords
3X0003, 3X0033, 3X0030, 3X0033,
quickly v(down)3X0003, ^(up)3X0203v(down)3X0003
C D(X54030) G ( full chords here)
then repeat
This is how I play it.
Whos better?
Who cares, I love 'em both!
Hi getfiddle,
Not a resident Texan, Floridian actually, but I do wish you and yours happiness and success in your new residence. If you ever mosey down the west coast of Florida( Tampa Bay area) let me know and I'll turn you on to the local "hot spots" in my neck of the woods.

There's a local band down here in sunny west coast FLA named "Rocking Chair Band". One of the guys( the lead guitarist) in the band plays in a wheelchair. They don't play out much but when they do, they draw a great crowd. I did a google search on them and do not have a website.
Great avatar Lieven! I thinks it's very cool.
Merci pour vos contributions.

I use two amps when I perform live( sometimes 3). Stage right is a Marshall 50W Soloist and stage left is a Behringer 45W Acoustisonic.( some people call this "daisy-chaining") I run my vocal mic, percussion mic, and guitar into an unpowered Mackie mixer with a touch of digital reverb. Out of the Mackie into the 2 face channels of the Marshall ( two out puts, left and right) from the line out on the back of the Marshall directly into the face input of Channel 1 on the Behringer. It's a small yet clear and powerful set-up. Many times I've had people ask me, "what else are you using besides those small little practice amps?" hahaha
At my bigger venues I'll throw in my Bose L1 Cylindrical Loudspeaker System and use my Marshall/Behringer set-up for stage volume. Same set-up plus a 2 into 1 quarter inch cable splitter on the back line-out of the Marshall. One line to the Behringer, one line to the Bose. The Bose has it's own power/volume 3 band EQ source so the Marshall and Behringer are unaffected with the addition of the Bose.

Mixed Martial Arts, agnostic religious studies, herbal and citrus gardening, and novice wood working ( thanks Guitarpix for the educational information, very helpful!). I attempt to build replicas of my musical equipment for my 3yr old son, minus the electronics. My wife and I made our little guy his very own Mackie Mixer copy, a pedal board just like Dads', and a miniature Bose L1 Cylydrical Radiator Loudspeaker System. He loves 'em and they have 1/4" holes drilled all throughout( with no electronics!) for him to plug his "hand me down cables" into that I gave him. My skills are minimal when it comes to woodworking but I'm very detail oriented and extremely careful and respectful of power tools( ie saws!!!)
I really dig Elvis Costellos' cover of " What's So Funny 'bout Peace, Love, and Understanding" by Nick Lowe..........

and Johnny Cash covering Soundgardens' "Rusty Cage".........
and Ben Harper covering Marvin Gayes' "Sexual Healing"...........
and Van Halen covering The Kinks' " Girl You Really Got Me Now"..........
and The Ramones covering Paul Ankas' "My Way"..............

Joan Jett's cover of the theme song to the Mary Tyler Moore Show
Bonnie Raitt's cover of John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery"
Willie Nelson's cover of Billie Joe Shaver's "Fast Train to Georgia"
Ray Charles' cover of the classic "Georgia", also covered by Willie Nelson
Mavis Staple's cover of Bob Dylan's "You've Got to Serve Somebody"
And since we've got Bonnie Raitt and SRV mentioned in the same post, I'll add her version of "Pride and Joy" for consideration.Self-Covers:
Jimmy Buffett covered his own song "Son of a Son of a Sailor" on his album "Take Me To Margaritaville", and I like it far better than the original.
Eric Clapton did an acoustic cover of his own "Layla" (from Derek and the Dominoes period), which I like very well.I'm sure I'll think of some more. I love covers. It's always fun to hear how someone else interprets the same lyrics and brings an entirely different style and feel to it.

Who actually wrote the song 'Georgia' anyway? And I agree about the acoustic version of Layla, very nice.
That'd be Hoagy Carmichael;

Hi,
Iwas just wondering if you or someone you knowhas got hurt or came close while playing guitar..... because i just took this big first aid course and was thingking, if you did get hurt while playing, what would it look like
Many, many years ago I was playing guitar/keyboards in a "church band "( I'm not 100 % positive but i'm petty sure there were no drugs or alcohol involved). The drummer and bass player had a heated dispute over how a part was supposed to be played. The argument grew into down right ugly, full flown " church brawl". A cymbal stand hit my left elbow on the "funny bone" zone. There was nothing funny about this incident however and this was my first and last session with this "church band"........................
I second that KajiMa!! Awesome site Wayne, thanks for the hook up.

Ghostbusters by Ray Parker
I had a 6 Million Dollar Man action figure with the bionic circuitry in the arm and leg. And it had the hole in the back of the head to look through and get the magnified view.
Also, I was a proud owner of a "Stretch Armstrong" action figure as well. This guy was cool and filled with a space age jelly substance that would return to it's previous form after being stretched to 10x its previous shape.
I wish I still had these bad boys.
I tremendously admire Maynards drive, athleticism, and intestinal fortitude. He's simply amazing and truely inspiriational. But the guy fighting him was in a no-win situation. Also, if Maynard was seriously injured, or worse, MMA as we know it today, would be over tomorrow.. This, in my opinion, is not worth the risk. I can't believe Maynard was given a liscense to fight.
According to JJ's web site, he has no dates slated beyond April( dang!) I'd really like to catch one of his shows!
or maybe this would be simpler, and pre-existing..............

Now don't go callin guitar hero nonsense. If you look at it as a tool. Or if you look at it as something to inspire a kid to pick up an instrument. Its great in my book. Guitar Center had a huge thanksgiving day sale and I can't tell you how many parents were there buying thier kids thier first guitar. I'll bet most of those kids want a guitar because they have reached the expert level on guitar hero. Most of these kids would have no idea who Eddie Van Halen is if it wern't for this game, but I'll bet they know who snoop dog and 50 cent is. Kids can learn rythem from it. They can learn that there are repeating patterns in music and get an idea of spacing between notes. Then they come over to your house like my friends kid did for my sons birthday and say "Craiger can you play "eighteen?" I thought to myself "eighteen by alice cooper!?" Where did you hear that song? "Oh its on guitar hero. This kid knows this great song because of guitar hero. I spent the rest of the night showing him a barre chord and how to play it. He "basically" had it by the end of the night. And now he has a Guitar! We just have to be the bridge from the game to the real thing. Oh yeah, the recess kids are great too.
Nah, in my humble opinion, guitar hero is still lame and nonsense, total nonsense. I teach guitar and play guitar for a living so your barking up the wrong tree here. Guitar hero will forever be in my world, a complete and total waste of time. My kids and the kids of players I teach know there are no shortcuts in playing guitar. If one wishes to learn how to play guitar, they practice on a real guitar, with 4,6, or 12 strings and 16-24 frets per string, not a plastic toy with 5,6, or 7 colored big buttons to mash. And if you wanna teach a kid the principles of rhythm, enroll them in a drumming/percussion class at your local music store. You wanna inspire a kid to play guitar, buy a front row ticket to a concert and show 'em what the real thing is all about. 2 tickets to a concert has to less money than the player stationary boxes and the game discs, right? I can pretty much guarantee you the "Recess" kids spent exactly zero minutes on computer games pretending to be musicians. These kids are a prime example what the youth of today can accomplish without the corruption of TV and computer games......... And guitar center should be avoided at all costs, in my insignificant and humble opinion.
But hey, if computer games work for you, and get you where you need to be, more power to you. What works for some is horrible for others, and vice versa.....
In a hospital or an airplane I am OK with the blocking of cell phone( etc. via public) signals but.......
IN a public /private /church school setting, I think we need to spend less time worrying about children calling/texting their parents/relatives/friends via cell phones, computers, I-phones, etc. from the schoolhouse and delegate those spy/anti-commincation funds towards installing safety restraints ( i.e. seat belts) in the buses that transport our kids to and from school. It's so messed up here in the state in which I reside( and many others too) that a licensed automobile driver can be ticketed for chosing not to wear their seat belt. Contrarily, the vast majority of the school buses that carry our children have no such option( seat belts). Seems kind of messed up huh? ( This is a rhetorical question, I'm simply stating the painfully obvious)
Buckle up! Put your cell phone/texting device away while driving!
If your childrens' school bus doesn't have seat belts, remove them from the bus and drive them to school yourself.
Then, continuously call the school board, monthly, weekly, daily, hourly, until this grossly overlooked issue is resolved!!!
And did I mention not to text and drive.........
OK, rant over, time to jam some tunes!.........
