Fantastic job Wayne...top notch. Great mixing too.

Heya Geo,

Thanks, I just purchased a new small interface and I am heading home for the weekend and hopefully give it a try. My poor old head hurts from trying to figure out the software smile

Thanks Kelly,

Thanks Kenny,

No this is one I did with my old camera, and I did the audio in 3 different tracks, vocal and acoustic guitar were done individually with a condensor mic into my mixer and into my computer. The lead guitar I miked my guitar amp and into the mixer. I mixed them with audacity.

I just purchased a new Presonus interface and it seems to record really well. So I am excited about using my condensor mic more for some projects . I am trying to get a handle on figuring out the software for mixing.  I really had to work on my recordings when I was just using my mixer into my PC , lots of noise and I found out the mixer signal is not compatible with my soundcard on my pc. If everything was set just right and you could get the room real quiet you could get alot of the noise out but not studio quality by a long shot.

I feel like a idiot with all this new technology and my poor old hard drive doesn't want to learn and my memory banks are full smile

After trying several small Interface recording devices I have decided to keep the Presonus Audiobox 2x2 . It seems to be a pretty sturdy little unit and I am making some headway on getting it figured out. Everything seems to be working with windows fine. For the price I think it will be all I need, it records 2 channels simultaneously and the software is going to be worth the price of the unit. It comes packaged with Studio One Artist , that cost around $200 if you just buy the software.

I have been fighting noise trying to use my mixer and into my soundcard, which I have found the mixer signal is not compatible with the mic input of the sound card. So it was either upgrade soundcards or purchase an interface. Just the few trial recordings are so nice not having all the noise to try and eliminate. I think it will be a worthwhile investment in spending some time learning how to use the software.

I like the fact that it is USB bus powered , makes it fairly portable if you use a laptop, like I do. It also has phantom power for using Condensor mics and I like the input knobs on the front of the unit for setting levels. It seems to be fairly straight forward and user friendly. The software is something I am researching and trying to learn , it has a recording section , then a mixdown section and from there a mastering section. So I have some work to do.

This little unit sells for $ 149.00 at most retailers, here's a link

I emailed my friend Jack and included Pete's link. He emailed back and said he had saw the news clip.
He said Andy has become a good friend and is a regular at his Monday night Open Mics. Andy and Jack have a fundraiser once a month and Jack provides the MC work and the sound system. Next month Andy is going to have a group of kids perform on Jacks TV show.

He also said Hohner has contacted Andy and wants to donate Harmonicas to his cause.

Jack has hosted Open Mic's for a long time and all the folks that host Open Mic everywhere should be commended. Most get very little pay if any and do it for the love of music. They are the first ones there and the last ones to leave and there's no roadies to setup and rig down. They are there if the music is good or bad.

Heya Pete,

Great story and this really is a small world , the fella that is playing guitar with Andy at the start of the video is an old friend of mine. He left Wyoming and moved to Port Townsend Washington. He was our Open Mic host and he and I would meet at the local music store and Jam on saturday afternoons.

His name is Jack Reid and he hosts open mic in Port Townsend and also has a local TV show.

Here's a link to Jacks site.

Heya Pete,

It seemed pretty easy for our guild to get started. The first meeting we had somewhere around 20 people and we have had turnouts of 10-20 every month for the past 5 yrs. Usually when we have a large turnout we split up into smaller groups.

For holidays and some other functions, businesses and the Chamber have asked Guild members to play at their events. I work such an odd schedule so I miss alot of meetings. We are lucky to have a guy that started our guild that keeps us posted on any area happenings and opportunites to play. He's also the one that put our songbooks together and we are lucky to have the member that hosts the meetings in his home.

I just thought I would share this and maybe give some others at Chordie some ideas and ways to meet some other players and find a way of getting together with other music lovers .

Hello,

Last week a few of us got together for our monthly get together. We meet at a members house and he has a really nice large recording studio and we gather round in a circle . We usually have somewhere between 10-20 musicians show up for the meetings and this one was really fun for me.

We had a nice assortment of instruments the host and hostess play a 12 string guitar and she plays an upright bass. We also had a resonator guitar and the guy playing it is super. We also had a banjo and a fiddle and 3 acoustic guitar players. We used to bring songs we liked to play with the chords and lyrics. Now they have gathered all our favorites and compiled them in a bunch of binders with an index.

We usually run through each song several times and it is amazing how they tighten up after a couple times. We try to keep it to 2 hr sessions but usually run over by a 1/2  hr.

I had a young fella sitting next to me that knew every song I did as we noodled around with a half dozen or better Neil Young songs and that was fun. I brought my sister in law along and she is a non player and she was so tickled and had the best time just sitting and taking it all in.

The Guitar Guild was started about 5 yrs ago and the Founding member just loved to play guitar and playing with others and sharing ideas and songs. He just put up posters at the local music store and around town. We met for the first meeting at a room in the local library about 5 yrs ago. When we  joined the guild we submitted our email address and phone numbers . After 5 yrs we are still having monthly get togethers and in the summer we get together tuesdays at the park.

I'm just gonna list the songs that I thought we played really well at the last meeting.

1. Wayfarring Stranger                                  Great feel good song !

2. Wagon Wheel    Old Crow Medicine Show     Fun, Fun to play with others !

3. Those Memories Of You          Dolly Parton   I didn't know this one but  it was a blast !

4. Wildwood Flower            Mabelle Carter        There were 2 guitars and our resonator that knew the picking of this one so it was
                                                                     Great !

5  Four Strong Winds          Ian Tyson               We run through this one a couple times and then a couple more just a Great Song
                                                                      to end a wonderful evening.

Playing with others is a great way to learn and pick up new tricks and ideas.

Sounds Like you are happy with your new gadget.

The Q3 that I recently purchased has the similar audio specs as the H2. I have found for my playing style and vocals the best my guitar sounds with the right vocal mix is on a camera tripod about 4 ft high and 6 ft away from the guitar. I have only used mine on auto and haven't used the noise filters.
The likes

1. Ease of use is unbelievable
2. Recording Quality is really nice for acoustic guitar
3. Very easy to upload vids and edit
4. Vid camera is simple but good

Dislikes
1. Need better software to go with it. It is simple but it doesn't offer any editing other than trimming
2. Hard on batteries like all vid cams seem to be. I ordered a ac adapter and purchased some rechargable batteries

Amy, I recorded a song today and really like how the acoustic guitar come through. I didn't use a pick or thumbpick and it still picked up a nice balanced tone. It's up on Youtube if you want to check it out.

Just wondering what format to use when sending files via the internet for collaborations. Do Mp3 files lose alot ? Once compressed are you still able to work with them ?

Thanks

That's exciting,

I am not sure if the H2 is like the Q3 or not, but if I clap my hands when I am gonna start it sets the audio levels better at the start. Sometimes if I don't do that It will start out real loud for the first beat or so till it gets the levels set. It seems kinda weird that something so small can do what it does .

Now your lead guitar players will have to get in the action and lay down some tracks for you smile

Have Fun,

Amy,

I am working out the progression and I will get it typed up how I am hearing it.  When I get it worked out I will record a verse and see what you think.

Don't rush into getting a recorder I have been 9 months working on my Pancho and Lefty project and I'm still not done smile

The lyrics are pretty close to what I'm gonna do.

Amy,

You can do it with one microphone and it would have to be a large condensor mic. If you do a search on acoustic guitar recording you will get a thousand different opinions. When I have used just one mic and finally get a mic placement right I make notes of how I did it. You have to have the mike a little higher and towards the neck of the guitar and keep cheating toward the headstock of the guitar until the vocals come through. Then when the vocals come through you start loosing the sweet acoustic sound you've been after.

Doug's said what I have been tiptoeing around about , it is very easy to go overbudget in a hurry.

One reason the little hand helds do such a great job they have two mikes and they are  X  Y  ed

I think it would get expensive  going with a new soundcard and mics and you would also need some type of pre-amp.
One of the reasons so many musicians are going for the handheld recorders.

From what I have heard and read most folks have given up on recording with the pc  mike input. Noise seems to be the issue and seems the better the mic you have the more noise your gonna get. I have a shure KSM-27 condensor mic and it is just about impossible to use with my PC mic input. I don't have the best soundcards but I hear the results aren't much different with better cards. When using the Focusrite interface the noise was no problem.

I think having some sort of interface to use either USB or firewire is the way to go.

Here's a link to some recordings with a H2

Amy,

Maybe if you don't want in too deep right away you could go with a Zoom H2 recorder. It has good built in condensor mics and you can record it to a SD card or use the USB. Then you could import your recordings to Audacity , which is a free software you can download.

The H2 is a little over $ 100. and could get you going and you would have pretty good mics and recorder. I have been on some other forums and there are some good players that have recorded some really nice stuff with them.

I have used the mic input on my soundcard and it is tough to get rid of the noise. The interfaces I have used USB and Firewire have had very little noise. The Audacity noise tool can only remove so much hiss and other noises before it gets into your vocals or instruments.

Kenny,

It is the easiest gadget I have ever purchased and I don't think anyone could have trouble getting it figured out. The software with it is also real simple and doesn't offer much. I checked and you cannot edit with Windows Media but you can with Quik time player. The software that is included just lets you edit the start and finish of the vids or trim them how you want them. I like the Roxio program I use as it allows you to mess with lighting and colors and insert any text.

There is a updated download I haven't done yet that is supposed to really improve the video's lighting and I will let you know how it works. I was hoping to do some outdoor vids but it's supposed to rain and snow the next few days.

I wish the Zoom H4N had a video camera in it, that would be a great little tool cause it is a 4 channel recorder with 2 built in condensor mics and 2 xlr mic inputs and can be used as a interface also. I guess it will record studio quality recordings. You can do your mixing and effects with it also.

Papa,

I had the same problem you are having with both of my laptops. I am on a cable system that provides cable tv and internet service. I fought the problem you are having for quite awhile and finally called and talked to the service people and they assured me it was not a problem on their end. They told me with as strong a signal as I had it couldn't be their problem.

I finally told them if they couldn't come and look at it I was gonna switch providers. They sent a young fella out and he found a booster on the back of my router that shouldn't have been there. He removed it and troubles are over.

When they had hooked up my service the guy had put it in. The young fella that found the problem said it made the signal too hot and was very apologetic that one of their guys had caused the problem.
