Thanks Guitarpix, but I don't think the Yairi will come in under budget.

Playing for tips? I cannot afford to pay anyone to listen to me! I think I'll carry around an empty guitar case with a gaunt look on my face and pretend to be an undiscovered (and starving) artist.

Thanks for the information, advice, etc. I am really excited for my daughter. I'll let you know how it goes. About a week ago she auditioned at the University of Georgia. This did not go well but I believe it was because they were disorganized and seemed to be indifferent to the whole scheme. Very disappointing. I know my daughter is good. She can give you goosebumbs with her singing and, of course, I must always have a tissue near by. Yes, I am the dad and biased but I have heard so much positive feedback from others that I know it' not me. And my undeveloped ears can detect brilliance.

I hope and pray she ends up doing something vocal/musical in life as this seems to be here LOVE. And, as they say, do what you love and never work a day in your life.

Wedgie 0.5mm. They have a divot for the thumb and are cross-hatched. One could play while riding on a space shuttle during liftoff and not drop the pick!

Initially I played with the thinnest picks I could find but now that my right hand technique has developed some I can use heavier pick and make a LOT more noise.

I've considered buying a pick punch to make my own picks out of credit cards, etc.

Picks are as debatable as guitar woods, string brands, etc. I suppose that's half the fun. The other half is buying/selling, and the third half is actually playing the instrument.

They played music over a sound system constantly- 33 records.
Chet Adkins tunes are the only albums I enjoyed.

Tubatooter: Chet Atkins at a monastery? Really? 33 albums? Did you physically count them or do you know this from the repetition? 24/7 music? Your reason for playing has got to be the most interesting and something ripped right out of a novel, a movie, or life.

Family trip to Nashville this weekend so my daughter can complete a vocal audition at Vanderbilt University for admission, scholarships, etc,. I don't know if I'll have any time for touring or shopping but can anyone recommend cool things to see, great guitar shops, or music venues? Thanks in advance. dj

Zurf,
Would it be permissible to tune in but not play? I'm not ready for prime time but this would be a way for me to learn.

Recording Kings are fine instruments and hard to beat. I own two.

Bitten by the nylon gremlin I am. I know nothing about classical guitars. I'm looking for recommendations and guidance towards this eventual purchase. New or used.

The first advice I received was: "solid cedar top and Spanish".

So far I've researched: Yamaha, Cordoba, La Patrie, Alvarez, and something called "Mr. Potato". Yes, you read that right. I am skeptical about a guitar named after a tuber.

Speaking of tubers, if I use a pick on a classical guitar will tomatoes rain down upon me?

About a month ago I picked up a nylon-strung classical guitar. I was quite pleasantly surprised. Lightly built, articulate, and it required a very light touch to make a sound. So now I'm on the hunt for a nylon-stringed guitar. Previously I could not understand why anyone would want one. Now I know.

I don't think I'm really interested in playing "classical" music but one never knows. Until then I may even use a pick on the nylon strings. I know this is against doggie ordinance but if I like it and can make a decent sound I don't see the problem. I should be able to get away with it since I'm not really a musician or guitarist, more of a hack.

p.s. anyone else play both steel and nylon?

Is it just me or does a non-round sound hole look odd?

I seldom use cash except when wheeling and dealing on a guitar. Pennies, nickels, dimes are a nuisance. The end up collecting in my car somehow. I play a game of trying to get rid of them when I go through a drive-thru restaurant. It the bill is $3.69, the 69 is made up of small change if possible.

I'm afraid small change will follow the Postal System to its demise. Times have changed. How long until we have no metal box on a pole at the end of the drive way? I've had two encounters with teenagers recently where it was clear they had no understanding of how to mail something via the USPS. This made me realize another aspect of the generational gap.

I have always LOVED sending and receiving mail. As a kid I was always writing letters to friends, etc and sending away for stuff. Now, I am one of the few to still write a letter every now and then. I still love it.

Referring to acoustic guitars only
1. I love the sound
2. To create something
3. Fun?

I don't care who you are that's funny! I saw the same thing in Germany once. I laughed then and still chuckle at the thought of it.

Probably not my first rock song but my first FAVORITE song was CCR's "Bad Moon Risin'" circa 1969. I was six.

No silly New Year's resolutions just a commitment to play.  I bought Justin Sandercoe's "Beginner" book. I wanted to support him and he is a first class guy and teacher. The book is quite good. I struggle with strumming patterns as it appears I am rhythmically challenged. And just two guitars with varying and frequent GAS. But so far, so good. I am having fun and that is a key ingredient.

I did finally reveal my face on YouTube in an embarrassing noodle session. I guess I had the camera pointed incorrectly. Discovered (finally) that my hand doesn't really care what the nut width is. I can readily and seamlessly adapt to most any guitar. Barre chords are still a work in progress but not as daunting as they once were although I cannot use them well enough to put them into a coherent chord sequence. But progress nonetheless.

Still have a difficult time getting a pick OUT of the sound hole. The guitar sound hole is the equivalent of a diode in an electric circuit: current (or picks) can only flow one way!

Over the Holidays my office moved to one much more visible to the responsible adults so I took my "office" guitar home. I didn't want anyone getting the wrong opinion.

Zurf,
Anyway you could rig up the Martin 000-15M for fly fishing? That would be a win-win!

Stratabond = laminated wood. Check out Martin's website for more information.
pros: durable, resistant to humidity changes, etc, can be nice-looking
cons: not "traditional", heavy (changing the balance of the guitar), can be unsightly (see non-traditional)

I don't mind them. I do shy away from new X series only because for the price there are many options and many sport a "traditional" one-piece mahogany neck. I cannot hear a difference but it is traditional and to get this feature on a martin you will pay $1,000+ (new).

@ $250, this one warrants checking out if you are cut-away/electronics fan.

J3,
A you probably know this is a 000 body in the Martin X series. It will have a solid top with HPL back/sides and a Stratabond neck. It will be made in Mexico. Now none of this is necessarily a show-stopper but this is an entry-level Martin. The ones I've played sounded pretty good and $250 is a good price assuming it hasn't been abused. I would not consider this model because I don't like cut-aways and I don't like (or need) electronics.

Caveat emptor: play before you buy.

For the record this was not a little yap master dog but a real German Shepherd. The dog bit me at the elbow as I tried to block what could have been a bite to my neck or face. Thankfully only one tooth punctured the skin at approximately where the Red Cross sticks you when donating blood. I laugh now, but it could have been much worse.
