Fender Stratocaster style is the most versatile. IMHO it should be everyone's first electric guitar

Hi guys,

I know that you should only be buying an instrument that you've played and that even the same models of same brand don't even sound/play alike.  I've been playing for a few years.  The problem is I've played a few instruments from both brands in stores but not the exact models as I can't seem to find them within a reasonable distance.  Generally though, I was pretty impressed by the G Series guitars, both sound and feel.  Maybe more so than Ibanez models in the same bracket.  However, I have read rave reviews about that particular Ibanez and would like to give it a whirl.  So I thought I'd post and see if anyone had any experience of them..  Thanks again.

Joe.

Reviews can be deceiving especially if the revewier is visting the chain stores. At any time, you can find a great playing low end guitar and an awful high end one. The guitars are not properly set up and strings are changed on a whim. I swear they set up the ones they make the most money on. I played a 1500.00 Taylor at GC and it played like crap. Taylor is arguably the best acoustic out there. The set up was so bad and the strings were actually noticable dirty. Point is if I didn't know better I could go on several websites and say Taylor sucks...they don't...not even close.
I understand sometimes you have to buy site unseen. Plan on having a good set up and you'll be fine.

Jerome said it ...be sure to play it and also plan on having it set up by a pro. Figure that into your price you'll be glad you did.  For what it's worth I own a Takamine G series and love it and I have never found a Ibanez acoustic I liked. But everyone's different

Dollar for dollar, I'll go with Takamine G series or Breedlove Atlas.   Both are great guitars at good prices, and both manufacturers have excellent service.  And if you want to go super high end, they can get you there, too.

I own a Takamine G Series A/E. Excellent plugged in or unplugged. I've had it for several years and its still my favorite

He will be happy with the SX fat strat copy. I have a maple neck one and a tele copy with a rosewood neck. I would recommend the maple neck for playability. It's a little orange for people who care a great deal about the look. I only care how it plays and it plays way better than it costs. I find electric guitar shopping is easier than acoustic guitar shopping. There's much less worry about trying before you buy. Electrics seem to vary less from unit to unit. Good luck!

Hi MeKidsMom,

Try this link for the Agiles, but remember you can't hold this one in your hands first, thats the only bad thing.

Also you can get a nice little pratice amp for around $100.00 a line 6 Spider 3 amp has lots of effects for a small amp with lots of distortion or a good clean sound.

Cam

I've bought several guitars from Rondo. His service is second to none. If you don't like it return it with no questions asked. No hassle. I own Agile, SX and Valencias. Agile is his premiere brand and the AL series are Les Paul Clones. I have an AL2500 that plays as well as a Gibson and feels much better than any Epiphone Les Paul I've tried. I also have a SX strat copy which feels as good if not better than a Mexi Stratocaster. Cameron's right, excellent stuff. I can't say enough

I second jaygordon...strat or les paul. Depneding on your budget a copy may be in order. If a copy is your choice be sure to check out Agile and SX brands. Good quality inexpensive but by all means if you have the means buy the name brand stuff

Firewire seems plenty fast enough for home studio but I also thought my 20 MB hard drive from the 80's would never get filled smile  I've worked with fiber in other arenas and it can be delicate; not sure if that'll hamper it catching on.

if it's a particular sound from a famous artist you're looking for chabces are they were using either an analog pedal or digital effects. If you're just beginning you may want to search the forum for effects. There's lots of advice.

Some songs just sound better on a twelve string.  Peace Train and Wild Rover for instance.

Pretty much anything from Cat Stevens. I wasn't sure I even wanted a 12 string and had purchased several guitars before it. But I love it. Anyone on the fence out there...do it.

Zurf, that advice is not for you....seems like you already have the fever smile

I played the Mitchell (I think it's Guitar Center's private label) and I thought the Alvarez was head and shoulders above it. Sometimes GC's stuff can be set up poorly or whatever. I also played several others in the under 300.00 price range (but not Tacoma). The Alvarez's action is low and the tone is full. I've played better (like Guild for example) but nothing in this price range.
I know sometimes it's hit or miss with low end acoustics but this one is a hit.

Good luck in your search. I'll stop raving about Alvarez now.

I find myself playing the 12 string more than any other guitar I own.

I have an Alvarez AD60S 12 string which I absolutely love. Got it new for around 250.00. Made in China but a fantastic player. Don't hesitate to buy Alvarez. Great bang for the buck

I have a shitty voice. You do eventually get used to the sound of your own voice. Once that trauma fades, the only advice I would lend (and again I'm awful) is don't try too much stay within your range. Even if your range is limited.

I do a  similar one to that. You are still a " Long Haired Country Boy"  I do  "Grey Haired Country Boy"  and I have a friend that does "Bald Headed Country Boy" smile

So...."Dyed Hair Country Boy" wink

Another nice job. Was it a stretch for you to be a "long haired country boy"; seems to come pretty easy to you

Well Done as always Russell. I have many slides and a round neck resonator. You've inspired me to blow the dust off those tonight and give 'em a go 'round. Thanks for sharing

Hello Bimmam,
My daughter purchased a PR-5E new and had it for a short while. The action was ok and it played fine. This guitar doesn't project well and is very weak unless plugged in. She traded hers for a takamine about the same size it's a G series EG 440 I believe and it is a much better guitar and better electronics.

I own a G series. Fantastic value...check them out.

Hey Wayne,
I started out straight into the PC jack and used Audacity as well. While Audacity allows you to adjust and monitor the input I think an interface gives you far more detailed control of levels. I bought a Tascam US-144. Has 2 inputs and phantom power. Paid about $150.00. I think they make a US-122 with a single input and the same controls and power. I think it's money well spent. You can plug in XLR (mic connectors) or 1/4 inch on either channel. Came packed with Cubase LE. Hope this helps. I've seen your videos, you're a great performer, I can't help but think this'll be a big help.

Sorry...l'm just finding this...Very powerful and deep. You should be very proud. I hope it helps to write about it. I can only imagine what that feels like but your song helps me relate. I'm blessed with 2 boys both without major incident and the worries associated with being a parentcan still be consuming...Well done keep writing.
