Pix,

One from today that is a good folk singer  Greg Brown, married to Iris Dement. This one leans to the country side but a good one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf0Q6anWEWM

Alot of good stuff during the 70's was done in alot of collaborations that didn't go over at the time. If you check out members of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Manannas , Flying Burrito Bros, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band , Grateful Dead to name a few. Seems members of these groups seemed to have all kinds of different things going on.

David Bromberg has some good stuff too and always has some neat twists on things.

I have been playing and learning songs from Townes Van Zandt's  list. There are alot of good ones with some melody picked out in the progression I also have been playing Blaze Foley's stuff. 2 great songwriters. I just bought a great CD by Jon Hogan, He was asked by the late Blaze Foley's sister to complete some songs from notes Blaze had left behind and also Townes Van Zandt's family gave him the go ahead to include some of Townes song's also.

Every Now & Then
Songs Of Townes Van Zandt & Blaze Foley
By Jon Hogan

Here's a link to his site and how the CD come about     http://www.jonhoganmusic.com/everynowandthen.htm

The version of the song "Nothin" by Townes is just awesome on this CD  I'm workin on this one and have a friend playing bass with me, great song.

I will give this some more thought and come try to come up with some treasures for you.

There are a few that aren't about girls, they're the ones The Gal is singing about the Guys.

I found the lyrics and tabs at  www.countrytabs.com   you will have to sign in to view the tabs. It is a free site but requires signing in. I would copy and paste but , it will still make you sign in to see it anyway.

It's listed at the Top of Waylon's songs under "A Love song I can't sing Anymore"

Bob,

If you decide to go with an acoustic amp. A 50 watt acoustic amp will really fill a room , I have played with a little 50 watt amp in churches and coffee houses it will really fill a room nicely. If you plan on doing any bars in the future the acoustic amp on its own probably won't be enough. You can get alot of use out of a small acoustic amp and I have always hung on to mine just for the small venues.

If you want an amp that has good effects, like chorus , reverb , delay  I would go with the Fender Acoustasonic or the Marshall. There are also some really nice amp stage stands available that make the amp easier to get to and gets it up off the floor and gets the sound out better.

The Fender Acoustasonic Jr is a 40 watt amp and I think it has better effects than the Marshall AS50D but I am not sure which one I would buy between the 2. It would be best if you could take your guitar to a music store and listen to see which you prefer, or if there are others you like better. I have used both and like them alot.

If you have more questions , feel free to ask there are alot of good musicians and folks willing to help you spend your money smile

Amy,

Maybe look at having your husband build you a bone saddle and also try some Tusq bridge pins. It will really wake your guitar up and you will like it even more. Seems when the sustain is increased it makes a fuller sound and you would think it would clutter the effect but it will make your notes ring clear and make you sound more better smile

I played a guitar the other day that was very similar to yours a AJ-100 and was really surprised at how well it played and sounded.

I think the Martin SP lights 12-54  would be really good on this guitar. Most of the shops sell them way too high, 15-18 is too much when you can buy them for 5-6 bucks on line, with free shipping. Hope I don't get beat up too much about buying online, but paying 3 times as much doesn't cut it when you play alot and have a few guitars.

Welcome Bob,

Does your guitar have a pickup. If so you would probably want to look at an acoustic amp. Marshall makes a 50 watt AS50R I believe that is a little under $ 400. and one of the best in this price range.  I have also played some of the new Ibanez Troubador series 20 and 35 watt amps that really sounded nice the 20watt is around $ 200 and the 35 watt is under $ 300 . These amps are 2 channel amps , one for guitar the other for vocals.

You would need a mic and a mic stand also and you would be set up to do some small venues. Peavey makes some good mics in the $ 50 range and a favorite by most in the $ 100 range is a Shure SM-58 mic.

You couldn't go wrong with any of these but, I am sure some others will comment.

Stills is one of my favorite acoustic players ever. One of the first songs I learned was "Helplessly Hoping" .

The video with Dick Cavet is pretty cool. The musicians in the circle had all just played Woodstock , that's been awhile ago. I have really liked 4+20 a long time . Don't know why I haven't done it before. I am playing it in open E tuning and my martin guitar just loves that tuning. It sustains like I have never heard an acoustic do, I am just amazed and having so much fun.

Heya Pix,

I've been listening to Matt for awhile also. He gets quite a bit of play on XM  Coffee House and the Loft, he is good . I don't want to Hijack your thread but I am so excited about an old song that I finally got around to. I have the guitar part just about perfected but I am struggling with the vocal it's too too high for me. It sounds so cool I just had to tell somebody.

Heya Selso,

I seem to relax on songs that I have been playing a long time and am comfortable playing alone or in a crowd. When I don't have the lyrics down or have to think to hard I get uptight. It seems practice and more practice going over the same old songs really seems to help.

I don't think Russell gets to uptight anymore, I haven't been playing as long as Russ but I'm startin to mellow, as the years go by you will wonder what you were so uptight about smile

Red Wine also works, and I know Kenny has loosened up with a couple beers , Some fellas smoke a cigarette or even a lefthander. Then some folks chill out with a little Ice Cream , do whatever gets you in the zone smile

Amy,

My first good guitar was a Takamine and it really doesn't matter if you have a high end one or an entry level one, they all sound great plugged. You will see lots of  musicians playing them , they kind of set the standard for years because of the great electronics in them. My daughter has a small bodied cutaway that is pretty quiet , but plug it in and it is really good.

I believe most resonators are set up to play like a six string guitar and dobro's are setup to use a slide. Resonators can be loud and really like precise pickers playing them to sound good. I think you would get alot more use out of the Takamine. Please don't take it the wrong way please .

I play with 2 different players that play resonators , one guy sounds great and is one of the best players in this part of the country, the other guy is an average guitar player and sounds much better on his guitar than the resonator.

This is just my 2 cents worth ,

I have some pretty nice guitars and they all get played alot and along the way they have all gotten alot of nicks and bruises my HD-28 Martin gets played alot and it is really starting to show it , seems music stands , stools and alot of other things get in the way when performing or recording.
A couple nights ago my friend Lance " The Minister of Low Frequencies"  Bass Player come over to do some recording so I was rearranging things and as I turned my back , condensor mic and mic stand tipped over and landed on the lower top of the Martin HD-28 it didn't change the sound any but it sure put a nasty scratch and gouge in it. I was just thankful it didn't go through the top.

Heya Zurf,

This is a old song my mom sang to, it was played at my Grandmothers funeral. She died shortly after I was born and it was one of her favorites.

"In The Garden"

http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.r … garden-crd

I have a story about a guy that played a righthanded guitar upside down. I've told this story before on the forum but it's been awhile.

I was livin in North Dakota at the time and I had heard a little bar about 50 miles away had open mics on thursday nights, so Lizzie and I loaded up the guitar and decided to check it out. When I got there , a couple a guys were playing and sounded real good. There weren't alot of people there and after a 1/2 hr or so the two guys playin asked me if I wanted to take over and play.
I said sure so I grabbed my guitar and got plugged in to the PA and jumped on a stool. I asked if they would like to play with me and one guy said sure. I started playing and singing and was a little nervous and playing without a songbook and after awhile it finally dawned on me that the guy playing with me was doing a lot of upstrums. I think I played Hotel California, and House of the Rising Sun can't remember what others and he was throwing in some mean lead licks. I really didn't realize till after I had played about 6 songs with him that he was playing the guitar upside down. I guess I kind of had tunnel vision concentrating on lyrics and being in a new venue. It got kinda busy and I didn't even get the guys name or talk to him afterward.

About a week later I was at the music store in Dickinson N D  and was visiting with the owner and I was telling him about the guy I played with. He said that's interesting where was the guy from. I said  I think someone said he was from Fairview Mont. The owner said Oh, I know the guy he has been in here several times. He said did he flip it over and play it right handed to, I said not that I noticed. He said the guy could play it just as well right handed too. I sure wish I woulda had my little Q3 then to video it, when it happened.

I still feel dumb for not realizing what was going on around me smile

Zurf,

I hang out a the local guitar store more than I should and they just got a EJ-200 in and I played it the other day, just for the heck of it. I didn't plug it in but I can check it out some more and give you an opinion. It seemed to play really nice and the action was good. I may get a chance this afternoon.

Howdy Flester,

If they have a PA system they should have a mixer of some sort. Most mixers usually have from 4 inputs on up and you can just plug your acoustic in and you can set the volume level on the mixer and on your guitar. Yes most have 1/4 '' inputs . I always have the bad habit of setting my guitar volume too loud , if you have time have someone listen and give you some help with your volume and mix,

Nope that didn't work ?

Ok it won't let me copy the page but the first few lines say.

You have no talent and you want the sound of a real pro ?
The well known effects brand Boss (Roland CE) with a clever
new device on the market which includes guitar playing is really a
breeze.

Then it goes into all the specs and effects smile

THe Boss TS-1 is available  April 2010 in better music stores smile

Heya Kenny,

Great Lyrics,

I have been giving this a spin and it doesn't work for me as written , maybe if I heard your take on it.

This is what works for me.

[D] I fondly do recall when I first saw your smile

Your [G] Auburn hair flowed gently in the breeze.

[D] You said that you were hitching and just trying to find,

Some [A-7] piece of mind,

Not ties [D] that bind.

The rest works for me, the E-7 doesn't seem to work for me and it seems to want to resolve to the   D  before it goes to the second part of the verse also . If not this way then I would try a minor chord in place of the E7

Just my opinion Kenny, please don't be offended ,
