I wrote this a couple of years ago after reading a poem by Walt Whitman of similar name. Made me think of what America used to be and is today. Short simple song  - uploaded to soundcloud too: https://soundcloud.com/jets60/i-hear-am … ging-today

I Hear America Singing TodayJeff Gilpin

[Em]I hear America singing today.

[Em]So different from times long ago

[G]When the goal was merely survival

All the while [G]building from the good that we know.

[Em]Society less intermingled, and

[Em]Equality nowhere in sight.

[G]The hopes for all were for betterment,

[G]And to improve whatever our plight.

/\/\

[C]-[D]-[A]

/\/\

[Em]Oh but today, it’s a life of emotions

[Em]That stretch us from laughter to tears.

[G]One day on the steps of greatness,

[G]And the next it’s the worse of our fears.

[Em]Hate seems to spread like a wildfire that

[Em]Makes gulfs that are wide and are deep,

[G]And that quenches all hope of achieving

[G]Any tomorrow we’re hoping to seek.

/\/\

[C]-[D]-[A]

/\/\

[Em]I can’t change the views of the people

[Em]Who refuse to let their views change.

[G]I’m doing well if I only manage

[G]To keep away from all this strange

[Em]Behavior infecting so many and that

[Em]Drives them to strike out in rage,

[G]Like the book you want to stop reading because you’re

[G]Afraid of what’s on the next page.

Hey Scott - I like the words, but I'd sure like to hear how it goes. With the 1 2 3 & 4 @ 164 bpm is sounds (at least at my feeble efforts) kind of up tempo punk, but knowing you I bet it's a bit more metal.

Nice Jim - I can imagine this played a bit harder - electric blues style.

Thanks Phill - Wasn't much fun at that time that's for sure, but I was fortunate we were able to ride it out. As I said, this is going to take me a little time to figure out how it goes, but when I have it I will post it up.

It's been a little while since I posted anything new. So since I haven't written a new song I thought I would share this old one I came across (and hasn't been on chordie yet). I wrote this when I was in between jobs and not seeing an end in site, and I think that mood I was end led me to more creative thinking, if a bit sad. Anyway - here it is and I hope you enjoy it. I need to work on performing this one better prior to recording so no promises on when this goes to soundcloud, but I will try and get it there.

Clear in My Mind By Jeff Gilpin

November 10, 2013

/<verse 1>\

[A]I’ll wake up to a[D]nother day

Just to [G]pass the time a[A]way

[A]Doing the same old [D]J O B

Unless [G]something else gets in my [A]way

[G]But if it was something like [D]you I’d be [A]glad

[G]Something not half as [D]fun I’d probably get [A]mad

[G]Either way I’m pretty [D]sure I’ll make it [A]through

[Em]Until another day begins like they always [G]do

/<verse 2>\

[A]I wonder what [D]life would be like

If [G]awake and asleep were re[A]versed

Where your [A]dreams were all that [D]mattered

Your [G]waking life less re[A]hearsed

[G]If that happened [D]I’d pay more at[A]tention

[G]To all my dreams even [D]those I don’t care to [A]mention

[G]But until that [D]time I’ll still [A]forget

Those [Em]dreams about the stuff that I’ll never [G]get [G7]

        /<chorus 1>\

Because [D]dreams they don’t come true accept for [A]bad ones

[D]Happy times always dissolve into [A]sad ones

But I’ll [D]always try and keep what’s important [A]clear in my mind

Like whenever you’re [Em]near

I look forward to another [A]day

/<verse 3>\

[A]Seems to me like [D]half the people

In the [G]world want different [A]things

And [A]what makes one half [D]happy

Makes the [G]other half want to [A]scream

Or [G]maybe the other [D]half just don’t under[A]stand

The [G]way that others [D]live in those distant [A]lands

And [G]maybe if the other [D]half under[A]stood

[Em]We could work together for a common [G]good [G7]

        /<chorus 2>\

And [D] make our dreams come true accept the [A]bad ones

[D]Happy times always never [A]sad ones

I’ll [D]always keep what’s important [A]clear

Like whenever you’re [Em]near

And look forward to another [A]day

Thanks for your comments Jim. I was leaning more toward's the WNC mountains where I grew up, but I agree, there are quite a few places that fit.

The Magic Village By Jeff Gilpin

8-4-2019

-----------------

- chords -

Verse

D C F G F G C G – D C F G F G D

Chorus F C G D – F C G C - ending with F C G C G D

----------------

/---------\

Verse 1

[D]Long long a[C]go

In a [F]make believe-like [G]land

[F]Outside of a [G]village

Near a [C]river birch [G]stand

There [D]in a small [C]cottage

Lived a [F]small fami[G]ly.

They were [F]meek they were [G]humble

But [D]they lived happily.

       /------------\

Chorus 1

A [F]simpler world indeed

With[C]out what some have now

The [G]good, bad

And the con[D]tent.

They [F]lived in their world

Filled with [C]many simple things

And [G]many simple times

All well [C]spent.

/---------\

Verse 2

The [D]time passed a[C]long

And [F]other people [G]found

The [F]quaint little [G]village

So [C]far from any [G]town,

And they [D]came one by [C]one,

Then they [F]came two by [G]two

To [F]live in that [G]village

Hoping [D]they’d be happy too.

       /------------\

Chorus 2

So [F]as the simple village

Was be[C]ginning to expand,

They [G]tried to hold on

What made it [D]so,

And it [F]grew with new people,

And it [C]spread over the land

Until it [G]grew into a place,

They didn’t [C]know.

/---------\

Verse 3

Now the [D]village is a [C]town

[F]Far from quaint and [G]slow,

More [F]people come to [G]live there,

But [C]some who lived there [G]go,

And they [D]search for a [C]place

Like the [F]village they once [G]knew,

[F]Looking for the [G]magic

That‘s now [D]lost to those few.

       /------------\

Chorus 3

But the [F]magic once it’s gone

Is [C]hard to recreate,

Like that [G]feeling of contentment

They once [D]knew.

The only [F]way to start again

Is to [C]set aside the past

You [G]can’t create what’s gone

But you [C]can build a[G]new.[D]

Thanks Phill - I believe this is my only beach song, but I put a lot of my memories into it. I'm glad you enjoyed.

Hey Graham - We see our fair share of homeless here in the US too. We're also seeing the homeless posers who stalk the places where they get the most handouts looking for sympathetic people with deep pockets.

Hey, Thanks Graham. When I wrote it I was getting ready for vacation. I do think a reggae beat would work....maybe with steel drum backing.

Interested direction you went, Keep. Very serious and critiquing about the America the world sees, both today and in years past. That said, your song shows a great use of the few thoughts and lines that Bill gave to start with. Creativity takes many forms and can build glimpses of thoughts and fragment of ideas into vastly different meanings, all depending on the creative person behind the pen.

My pleasure Bill - Here it is if you want to have a listen: https://soundcloud.com/jets60/the-last- … -love-song

Here's my version of the challenge SB Bill gave in another songwriting thread with chords now (just posted the lyrics on his thread). I kept the chords pretty straight forward (GCDEm) so it's fairly easy to play for folks if anyone wants to try it out. I'll try and get it up on my soundcloud site before Sunday (July 7th) so you can get how I play it. Thanks Bill for getting me started on this.

The Last Great American Love Song By Jeff Gilpin - Jets60 &  Bill Craig - Strummerboy Bill

July 3rd, 2019

_[.]_

Verse 1

[G]Someone in a song I wrote de[D]cided they were real

So [C]commenced to get in [D]trouble near and [G]far.

They’d try to get along, but [D]just like a lot of songs

They [C]ended down and out at a local [D]bar.

_[.]_

Chorus 1

Now the [Em]barman sympathetic tried [C]consoling,

[D]Conversing about how it all turned [G]wrong.

But [Em]they just kept on crying, and they [C]said as they were sighing

I’m [D]living the last great [C]American love [Em]song.

_[.]_

Verse 2

[G]Someone in a dream I had de[D]cided to awaken,

And to [C]run off into the [D]hours of the [G]day,

But they made the people sleepy. Some were [D]yawning; some were weepy.

So [C]someone kept on about their merry [D]way.

_[.]_

Chorus 2

Now to [Em]no one’s delight the day de[C]scended,

As [D]someone’s happy day was turning [G]wrong.

So [Em]someone turned out tired as the [C]day about expired,

And put to [D]bed the last great [C]American love [Em]song.

_[.]_

Bridge

The [C]great American love song’s never [G]ending,

And that [D]song leads us on a path that never [G]ends.

[C]When it’s said in done we’ll stop [G]pretending

The last [D]great American love song...just [C]went on far too long.

_[.]_

Verse 3

[G]Someone in a doctor’s office was [D]describing maladies

To a [C]doctor that [D]was way over their [G]head.

But the doctor took it in from [D]beginning to the end,

Trying to [C]figure out just why they weren’t yet [D]dead.

_[.]_

Chorus 3

But [Em]death just like life comes to us [C]all

For [D]those who’re deathly sick or for the [G]strong

So [Em]as through life we cope, it’s [C]best for us to hope

That we'll [D]end up in The last great [C]American Love [G]song.
