hi yupgift2u, welcome to Chordie.

if you read the words you'll see that the gift is a baby, it's given and received! the original gift i guess was Jesus.

nice one Daddy, showing that Christianity grew from Judaism and that Islam, Judaism and Christianity all stem from the same roots. So why all the bad feeling and strife? the true message is....LOVE EACH OTHER and delight in the gift
of children.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone, no matter your beliefs or creed.

following on to what jerome said above, the first time i went on holiday to turkey was one big eye-opener for me. this was about 15 years ago and after getting off the plane at dalaman airport (which is  or was a military airport) and travelling for 4 hours in a rickety old bus, all i remember is the poverty, the broken down homes, cars that were left overs from the american bases and were falling apart, but mainly how friendly these people were. i'd never had any contact with muslims before and i was very apprehensive as to the welcome we'd get. apart from watching the men so they'd leave the wife's bum alone they were great, we made friends and when we returned the following year they'd actually remember us even our names. i've had holidays since in spain and greece and felt like something they cleaned off their shoes. one of my fondest memories was walking down the main street in kusadasi and seeing an ox cart with the farmers wife pulling the ox, the cart full of water mellons and the farmer sitting with the reins in one hand and his mobile phone (cell phone) in the other! at that time i didn't even have one my-self!

i thought i'd share this cos the religious theme has overtaken the thread somewhat.

to finish off, i think we are all religious in one way or another, even pagans. god may have been invented to explain how we got here, to give laws and teach how to live in peace. unfortunately theses ideals have been used and abused by the religious hiarchy for their own ends. governments would have us all illiterate and innumerate if they could. they got away with it for hundreds of years, a time we call the dark ages. the poor only get dangerous when they have a little knowledge and can think for themselves. then we would stop being cannon fodder for the rich, powerful and royal.

not everyone has a problem with "B" my friend. i just found a lovely sounding "B" chord by putting my index finger across the 4th fret and playing the "G" shape playing the open high Ab. i guess that makes it a B6. it's funny how chords take on a different feel when played in different shapes and positions.

hey russ, that's interesting about the fender broadcaster as i used to know a guy who had one. did they start making them again later?

talking of steven hawking, i watched one of his programmes the other day in which he (more or less) proved there was no god!

i dare say someone else will come along and prove there is...what bothers me about religion is that we have to accept the word of people like the pope, the arch bishop of canterbury, mullah's, rabbi's etc. i wonder if we'd accept god's word if he actually turned up? would we be as hostile as they were 2000 years ago when they crucified jesus?

jerome, no they cant do their own songs, they do covers. mostly not very good covers at that!

i've got to say that the judges should be taken out and shot (along with jeremy clarkson) i was just getting to respect
gary barlow (one of the judges who writes and sings most of the songs in a boy band called "take that") but after hearing his comments and totally disagreeing with his judgement calls i rate him alongside tullisa and louie...a point below zero

during the 70's i played with a band called "Enchiriadis" (enkiriadis) it's a musical term that was suggested to me by a music teacher. i cant remember now what it means (old age) but feel free to use it if you like it, and can pronounce it.

with or without glasses zurf?

i also love all the science and natural history programmes.

zguitar mentions that there seems to be no one around today to match what da vinci and heron and a great host of others designed and invented. nobel is one that is over looked unjustly i feel, dynamite is not just used for blowing people up!

what about babbage and his computers?

everyone gives microsoft a hard time, where would we be without them?

one of the greatest inventors of modern times must be LES PAUL, without him would we have the electric guitar?

i also have heard that john lennon came up with the idea for the flanger!

ok russel, let's get technical. a harp is a stringed instrument of various types such as orchestral, Irish there's even a Welsh harp. 2000 years ago the bards that wandered around Britain used harps to pass on news or accompany their songs/verse.

a harmonica is blown and operates in a similar fashion to a church or bellows organ ergo; it's other name "mouth organ"

you may have managed to remove the English military out of the US, but then again your army consisted mainly of immigrants from the UK anyway, people who wanted to get away from the "red coats" and their tyranical king and government.

the US and UK, 2 countries separated by one language. what does it matter anyway, we'll all be speaking Chinese soon!

if you have to be pedantic...yes, but as a long term member of this site i've come to realise that we all make small errors and everyone overlooks them, otherwise we'd all spend most of our time correcting mistakes instead of doing what we come here to do, which is to share music, views, ideas, friendship, knowledge and expertise, so as my American friends say; chill maan

hi saggypants and welcome to chordie.

there is no substitute for practise. i'm 60 myself and have been playing since i was 15! so i've suffered most of the aches and pains somewhere along the line. posture has to be the reason for which you're aching. sit up as straight as possible and try not to look down at the strings when you're playing. i often practise solo's or instrumentals in the dark.
i remember a friend telling me when we used to watch bands play at the local dance; "you can always tell a professional guitarist `cos they dont look at the strings when they're playing." we all look occasionally but try not to look all the time.
get a feel for the notes and picture in your mind what you are about to play. and dont forget....sit up straight.

i had a couple of good (not great) mouth organs in my early years when i used to play everything in discord including vocals (probably still do) but i didn't realise till many years later why. it's because mouth organs, harmonica's and "harps" come in different keys. that explains a lot as everything i used to play back in the 60's and 70's was in E!!!!

by the way, something that has bothered me for a while. why is it that you colonials call a harmonica a "harp"?

crisps = chips. and chips french fries? bet it's something to do with darwin's theory of evolution. if it wasn't for tv and the interweb, i bet we'd be totally different species by now...lol

so a sharpie is a big felt pen, so why didn't dj call it a felt pen so we less educated across da pond would know what you're talking about?

i was beginning to think toots was a bit of a sadist wanting to take some sharp implement to some sweet lady's software!

and i also think amy was right, if you buy an instrument, whether or not you play it, it is then 2nd hand. and who'd want a guitar signed by someone who hadn't actually played it?

playing upside down didnt make hendrix sound bad. though i must say having done the upsidedown thing more than once in a pub (or 2) it is difficult but not impossible. i was recently in tenerife and a fellow welshman named taffy (original huh?) played lefty on a right handed guitar and his lead was excellent. if you ever get to tenerife try taffy's bar and say phill sent you.

i was given a uke for my birthday last year, but it wont stay in tune, it's gathering dust in the corner now! but good luck, and welcome to chordie.

hi rog, this is just a suggestion and you can shoot me down in flames if you like, but i did a paint job in the house where i had to strip down some old, dark paint which had penetrated deep. when i couldnt get it all out i painted a white matt paint and let that sink in, then stained. the result was...interesting!

just as an update. i found i had a Cubase midi studio with my Alesis mixer. a few tweaks with the soundcard and i'm up and running. it's not as good as my old "Gold" studio though. i wish i could get that to work, but it was built for Windows 95, it ran well on XP but Windows 7's got it beat. if anyone can think of a way round it i'd be sure grateful

hi beamer,

i have an Alesis, it's an 8 track mini mixer which i bought new with a cheap price tag. it comes with a USB out put. that said
it doesn't seem to work very well into the PC. i think roger has the best solution which is to take a pair of RCA's size down to a mini jack and there you go. MAKE SURE YOU DONT LEAVE THE VOLUME TOO LOUD ON INPUT.

hi jerome,

i think it's my sound card, i took it from my old PC. it's creative audigy 2. i've down loaded all the driver updates but i'm not getting any sound from it! so i'll take it back to the shop tomorrow and let them sort it out. i've got cubase and cubasis, neither seem to be working! sobs.

hi geo,

i've got 2 mixcraft CD's. one's an MP3 music suite and 'tuther is an MP3 audio mix, they're both quite old and not fit for my purpose....dont worry i'll get there

thanks anyway

4984mill,

go to the songwriting forum. at the top right you'll see "add a new topic" click that, then either type in your song or if you have it on word or open office high light it, click "copy" go to the open page and click "paste" then the song will magically appear.
check out the sticky as to how you work the "chopro" program, and your chords will appear "all purdy like"

hi, thanks for your input and it's all been a big help.

as seriousfun said "money plays a big part" so true and i've just shelled out for my new PC, so the wife's not overjoyed about buying a new recording program!

i have a midi controler keyboard a korg k61p. it has a usb output (which i've never tried) and cubase studio on the CD, which i think is for XP. but as thinking is not knowing, i shall give that a go.

thanks for the ideas and help, going now to try that web site

i have been running XP on my PC since new (about 6 years) and using a midi studio called GOLD. so for a while i've been having problems with the PC, and sunday after many crashes it took the final dive and went to join mr babbage in that great internet cafe in the sky.

so, i go buy a new PC with windows 7, all singing all dancing, but it sucked in and spat out my midi program and my midi interface! so i'm not a happy camper!

i have searched the internet for a decent midi studio (for free of course), but even the free ones want a license, and after paying it the prog could still be rubbish.

and so, i would be ever so grateful if someone could suggest a good midi studio and point me in the right direction.

thanks

hi sloan,

you will also find that when you print out a song the chord windows print out also. though you should only do it for a school or musical education....technically, sort of (hush hush!)

hi kajir, welcome to poems

i agree with BGD, that it's never a good idea to put your phone no on line, you could get bombarded with calls from spammers or even nut-jobs. chordie has an email service so members can email you while retaining your privacy, so i'd recomend you edit your no out and invite members to email you if they're in you locale.
now to your poem; nice work, deep yet vivid! i can see why it might be difficult to put to music, but you can invite attempts by other members to put music to it.

dont be a stranger, lets see some more

anyone can lay an acoustic track which will sound good. it's when it comes to multi-tracking that the metronome comes into it's own. in the 50's and 60's, they would use a second drummer on recordings, "off mic" to keep a true beat. with the on-set of digital recording, the metronome is built into the recording equipment, so an extra track for the time keeper is not needed. just thought it might be of interest.

i agree with jerry, yamaha's are good, they're quite cheap over here (UK). if you were thinking of getting a used one, i had a lot of trouble with the "midi out" connector. i had it repaired once then it broke again, so keep an eye out for that.

i think the term your looking for is "weighted keys"
