Good for you naolslager! I'm thinking that's what's going to happen here too. Hubby will get a new guitar that he will pick out himself from me. LOL! Hmmm... I wonder if that means I get to have a chunk of money to purchase whatever I'd like for myself from him... now the wheels are turning!

Kenny this looks good! Wayne's style will be perfect for it! I can't wait to hear it! I think the title is fitting, I wouldn't change it. You've made it clear that if it offends anyone HERE that you'll adjust, so I'm sure if they're offended they'll let ya know!

Yes, I could tell it wasn't quite classical... however your training shows thru there IMO! youtube is the way to go to post anything you like as long as you own the rights to the video. When you do (I hope you do!!) please do share! I've got one guy marked as a favorite on there that I just LOVE listening to.
http://www.youtube.com/user/AndanteLargo
I know he offers sheet music to all the scores he has the rights to (for purchase of course) ... from what I've seen, he writes a lot himself, and also "re-composes" popular tunes. GOOD LUCK with your testing!

Canadian Eh? Nope... but I was raised for the first 10 years in Buffalo and we associated with a lot of Canadians... mostly Grandma did as it was a necessity for her to go to Bingo in Canada years ago... apparently your bingo has always rivaled ours! LOL!
I have a classical guitar... and someday I think it might be fun to actually learn how to play it properly, at the moment however I'm mostly just playing chords and picking out notes that I hear as I go. It could almost sound classical at times! Awesome that you're really doing it. Mark, I'm checking out your soundclick now... I LOVE listening to the classical music! What you've got on there is beautiful!

One of the members here just mentioned a pretty neat website that might be similar to what you're looking for. It's www.songsterr.com --- check it out. Theres tab... I thought there was music notation, but I guess it's mostly tab... not quite what you're looking for, but it will get you started... you can also play along with it, print... etc. I'm not sure if every song is just tab ... but like I said, check it out. I don't know the site too well personally, just took a look at it for the first time yesterday. Happy playing! OH... and welcome to Chordie!!

Doug, that's a good idea. Tho... my hubby is due for a new guitar before I get anything else new, and I don't think I really have a need for one yet (an elec/acoust)... like you said, unless you're playing for others in a louder setting it's just not really a necessity. I hope to purchase a nicer classical and maybe a steel string down the road. That'll probably be well before considering going electric. I do like the thought tho of making my guitar a hybrid however!
One can only hope that investing in all that expensive equipment really helps the player to achieve his dreams and add to the entertainment.
Wholeheartedly agreed!

My guess is that little box affixed to body of her guitar is the pick-up for amplification. Something similar to this..... http://www.boutiquemusicinc.com/e-store … PLEBAR.gif
actually manicbassman started a new thread about this a while back, and the members figured out that it is a tuner

Very nice Doug! Thanks for sharing! Yeah... it was impressive that whole loop pedal thing, but he was just soooo busy working all that. I enjoyed listening and all the other drunks in there did too (lol), some were even dancing along... but I personally would rather sit around a fire or on the couch and just play it out without all the fancy doohickies! Now don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to get an electro-acoustic someday... but all that work... ugh

Ken, I think freedom of speech is a wonderful thing... and I appreciate hearing your point of view on things even if I don't always agree. I hope you will change your mind and stay for a bit more... or at least come back now and then to say hi. If not... then I will look forward to seeing you on youtube or elsewhere in the internet world.

Wlbaye... I too am sorry to hear about your wives friend losing her daughter. That is a hard one there. I hope you keep her in your thoughts and prayers each year at this time as it will probably always be a difficult holiday for her now. Thankful indeed for what we do have here with us each and every day!

Boys!
Everyone has a right to their opinions, lets not name call. Thanksgiving started as a thanks for a bountiful harvest and a sharing of it. Yeah... everyone has an opinion on the whole situation the native Americans were in after that (you don't want to hear my opinion)... but it still is what it is to Americans. A day to give thanks for food on our plates and sharing it with friends/family.
As an American who's celebrated it my entire life, I'm curious to know that it's thought of as a day to give remembrance to what the Native Americans gave up... interesting approach Ken. I don't know if a lot of Americans actually celebrate it in that fashion (the Native American's probably do)... but I have never heard of looking at it from that point of view. In school, the kids learn about how kind the Natives were and how everyone shared. They aren't taught about Thanksgiving from the view point of the war that followed.

No snow yet in Central NY ... tho it's chilly for sure! I hear from the hunters that the deer were VERY late to go into rut this year... which likely means a very mild winter for us this year... or at least, a late start to winter. That's ok... I wouldn't mind only 2 months of it instead of the 4-5 we usually get!

It's pretty traditional for some folks to go out to the local bar on the night before Thanksgiving. Why not? Any reason for a few beers and good music works! I think it's more of a thing for the freshly 21 crowd visiting their parents from college. This was actually my FIRST Thanksgiving Eve ever out. I generally want to sleep since I have to do a lot of cooking the next day... that and babysitters aren't around too much... but since my son turned 13, I've been blessed with a live in sitter for the two littler ones! So, my husband and I went out to the local bar last night and were amused and awed by a very nice performance. In the corner sat two large speakers, a mic on a stand, some electrical doohickies on the floor, and an elecrto-acoustic leaning on the wall. We really weren't sure what to expect. Was this going to be a one man band or was everything just not quite set up yet? Indeed, it was a one man band. So as we were listening we both kinda went... "awe... I wish those one man deals would just play the acoustic rather than bring in all that pre-recorded background music". It sounded good... but... when it's just one guy ya know... and we were debating over if he was really good or just kinda good. He had a very nice voice. And then, I started actually WATCHING him and looking around as it seemed he really didn't have "enough" equipment to have brought in all that pre-recorded stuff. Sure enough... he didn't, he wasn't. And here is where my opinion of this "one man band" turned from "alright" to pretty darn awesome. Via his guitar and those electric doohickies on the floor he was actually "recording" his background music RIGHT there before EACH song! Yep... he'd tap something with is foot and pound out a bass beat, then he'd tap again and play a bass riff, then he'd tap again and mute all his strings to get another drum beat, and another tap and add in some chord strumming, one more tap and it was all going at once. Then... he just sang his little heart out and played along to his very own freshly "recorded" background all the while tapping here and there on the electric doohickies on the floor to stop the beat, start it back up, change his voice to sound techno... he was a VERY busy little man!
I must say, I felt like a jerk for being annoyed when we first walked in. This man truly has some talent! It sounded awesome especially when you put all this into consideration! I have to wonder however, how much he was really ENJOYING his own music as he just seemed way too busy ... plus, my husband and I both wanted to run up to him and tighten his guitar strap as he kept fidgeting with it the entire night. All in all tho... it was pretty cool to see this type of performance live in action in our little tiny town!
Anyone ever see anything quite like this before?

I feel strange starting this thread... guess I expected to come here today and find one already started... strange no one did it first. So ok... here I go!
Dear Canadian friends... happy belated Thanksgiving to you! American friends... Happy Thanksgiving! To the rest around the world... I hope somewhere amongst the fall weather (if you're in fact getting ready for a big winter) you've got a turkey feast in the plans! There's nothing like a big ole bird, stuffing, cranberries, mashed potatoes, and of course mom's apple pie! Here in NY the wood stove has been burning already a month now (at least). Winter is coming soon... and finances are in a bit of a shamble. I am most grateful this year for the 17lb turkey that was in my freezer (gawd those can get expensive)... and the fact that we were able to afford to purchase the rest of the fixin's for our feast. Somewhere out there are people that can't afford a decent meal today. We shall feast tonight in memory of those that came before us who were most grateful for a bountiful harvest... the last hurrah before the snow and frigid months of winter (with no end in sight) set in.
May you have wood in your fire, food in your belly, and someone to share the heat and meal with .

Pix, I agree with Cam... would have thought you'd been playing much longer based on the amount of knowledge you seem to have. I hope I can be half the guitar player you are at three years! Congrats on the anniversary to you, the wife and the guitar!
My goal, while not much, is to be able to play a handful of songs well without music in front of me by next summer... so at least SOMEONE has a guitar out at the next campfire! Nothing major. I just want to be able to play a few tunes (and be able to sing along... ahh... yes I need to learn all the lyrics in proper order too) and give a little of that feeling I used to enjoy so much while my father was playing and hopefully he can sit and sing along with me for a change. I think he'd really enjoy that.

Thank you Pastor! Beautiful indeed! deadstring, I'm hoping that my new pup will eventually make a great therapy dog so that I can do just that with her. In the mean time... perhaps I should seek out the nursing home residents to practice my guitar upon. I imagine they wouldn't care too much if I'm not so good... just having a visit and a bit of music regardless of the ability would prolly make a world of difference either way. THANK YOU for the suggestion!

The first thing that comes to mind is laminating... however, I have heard that if something has monetary value laminating it takes away it's $$ value. Sounds to me as tho you've found something of value near and dear to your heart however not so much of money value (to yourself anyhow). It does sound like a nice "time capsule" has been found indeed. Treasure that!

Re: What brand and thickness picks do you use? (32 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I've been playing with my bare fingers. There's been a few times when I've tried to pick up one of hubby's picks and I just cannot hold onto them... they fall right out of my hand while I'm playing. I like to mostly play with my thumb and I desperately hear notes that I want to pick out to no avail. I happened to be at the local shop and decided to grab a thumb pick and some finger picks for the heck of it. I am in LOVE with the thumb pick! It's taking some getting used to on upstrokes... and I know I should be using my fingers or the finger picks... but that'll take some more time. I just can't say enough good about what the thumb pick has helped me out with... getting those few notes in there picked out as I'm strumming. This brings a totally different sound and style to my playing!
Those finger picks ... those will take more getting used to!
