Now that's a great way to reward & motivate your students, Roger ... hat's off to you, mate! You must have been thrilled to see each of their reactions to their new guitars. Nicely done, man ... that's impressive!

Wondered the same thing, Gusspoon. I wouldn't think that going to a denser wood for just the fretboard would have much impact on weight. Verawood isn't dark, which may be the reason it's not used. It would be good to hear from an experienced luthier about this ... I'm sure there s a good reason.

That's a cool test, Gusspoon ... never heard of it, even though I'm an "old timer" as well. I haven't noticed any sustain problems with my guitars, but this will give me a way to test that some rainy evening. The nylon-core strings on my classical have less sustain than steel core strings do, but that's normal.

I only know a few blue-grassers well, and they each speak very highly of jam sessions. The style of music itself lends well to any sized group providing background accompaniment, as each musician takes a turn soloing.

Welcome to Chordie, Chuck! No need to beat yourself up about not picking with the 3rd and 4th fingers ... Mark Knopfler made great music and a handsome living without hardly using them at all.

Dino ... I guess we're getting the answer we wondered about. Doesn't seem like any Chordians are using it. Here's a couple links that I've looked at, which you probably have too. One is a demo, and the other is a review by The Gear Page:

I guess I'll just have to break down and buy the thing to really see how it works. If it's useless, it won't be the first $50 I've ever wasted! (LOL)

Happy NAD, Fire Art!

It's awesome when both the house and all it's occupants show an immediate reaction like that ... well done!

Is anyone using the Riff Station software for learning music? I've seen ads for it on Chordie's home page from time to time, and looked around their site a bit last evening. Please let me know what you like and/or dislike about it.

http://www.riffstation.com

Is it worth $50? Or is there something better you'd recommend?

Thanks everyone!

Welcome to Chordie, H&S!

We hope to hear from you often. Chordie is a great resource as a browser, and even better as a member. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on here from different musical backgrounds. Yet our common love of music and guitars makes this a great place to exchange ideas.

Welcome to Chordie, Uncle Joe ..

I found the site early last year, looking for chords for something. After lurking in the forum for a couple weeks, I really enjoyed the constructive and respectful banter going on, and decided to get involved. Like yourself, my guitar sat idle for many years while the family was growing, and just came back out about 2 1/2 years ago. A few additions have been made since, and thanks to the folk here I've got a ton of useful tips and encouragement that have helped me to improve and enjoy playing more than I ever did.

We hope to hear from you often!

NELA ... couldn't agree more; I find ice fishing just plain boring.

Had the first full day with the new Peavey, and have had a blast with it. I can't believe how rich the clean tones sound from it compared to a non-tube amp ... it's like night and day. Went through a whole bunch of Dire Straits, CCR, and Steely Dan stuff today, then switched to some full-gain Led Zeppelin, Rush, etc. Next thing needed will be some stompbox effects, as my little Vox did have a nice bunch on-board.

I'll never be satisfied with anything but a tube amp from now on ... what a difference!

Just happened to be a music store today that I don't usually frequent. I've been in the market for a while for a 2 x 12" all-tube amp, and have been looking at various makes, trying them out, etc. One of the finalists on my list was a Peavey ValveKing 212, which seemed to be good value for a 2x12 tube under $1000. Lo and behold, these guys had one on sale for $449 (reg. $649), and they threw in the foot switch for free!

It's sounds freakin' awesome, and unfortunately my little VOX VT80 just sounds flat compared to it (soon to be on KIJIJI). Try as many have, there just isn't any electronic circuitry that can duplicate that rich sound of an all-tube unit.

Wow! Didn't know there were so many anglers amongst us!

I feel very blessed that in our little province of Nova Scotia, we have so many different freshwater & saltwater species to fish for. There's rarely a time of year when something isn't "in season" outside of the winter months, and then there's ice fishing opportunities in stocked lakes throughout the province. Although my absolute preference is fly fishing for just about every species, a light spinning rod comes out on windy days, 'cause I just can't be bothered try to manage a fly line in a stiff breeze. And going after smallies from the kayak is also a blast.

Three days to go !!!

I know this won't mean much to a lot of people, but here in Nova Scotia, trout season opens next week on April 1st !!!

Got a 3-day trip planned with a buddy, as we take our kayaks to a river / lake system that never disappoints for the opening of the season ... we're both like kids before Christmas. Even though we're sometimes camping in below-freezing conditions (got lots of good gear), it's an annual highlight to kick off each season this way.

Are there other anglers on-site planning for the Spring season?

I'm hoping fellow-Chordians can recommend some good play-a-long sites, where the guitar and/or bass is absent from the total music mix. My brother (a drummer) goes to a couple sites where the drums are edited out of the soundtrack, so he can just drum along in his own way. I haven't had much luck finding sites like that for guitar. Any suggestions?

Would also recommend round-wounds over flat-wounds. I know that sound preferences and music styles differ, but I just find that flat wounds have a lot less ring to them.

Nice looking lineup. I was getting a kick out of the blatant copyright infringements through their descriptions, such as PRS, Ovation, Telecaster, etc. Copyright law only reaches so far, it seems.

Someone posted a thought-provoking account a while ago, involving something that happened in the middle of a lake somewhere. So the poet's hat when on, I came up with the following:

MIDDLE of the LAKE

The new life started with its hopes and its joys,
With aspirations and dreams for our little boys,
As they learned, and they grew, and they played with their toys,
Their laughter and voices were the happiest noise.

Then we reached the middle of the lake,
Where the start seemed so far and the dock seemed so small,
And we wondered at times how we'd cope with it all,
Oft tired, oft helpless, in the middle of the lake.

Our young boys grew, and men they became,
Independence asserted, free to navigate,
We watched them struggle in the currents of life,
Praying spectators, in the middle of the lake.

They tell us now they watched, as we grew and overcame,
Worried that age might snare and overtake,
Funny how the shoreline is never quite the same,
Seen through others eyes, not the middle of the lake.

It's not much of a poem, but most parents of grown children will be able to relate.

NELA ... I hear your clearly about all of the spam postings ... a real nuisance.

I always got to have my "Chordie" fix each day, and although I tend to get wordy I don't always post something. Seems like sometimes there isn't a lot to say, or a topic that catches the imagination. Most days aren't like that, and Chordie has truly been a constant source of information AND inspiration.

Most of all, I personally appreciate the respectful way in which Chordie members treat each other. A class act!

Some good all-solid guitars at entry-level pricing are the Seagull "Maritime" SWS SG (about $600) or a Simon & Patrick S&P "Woodland" Pro (about $650). I believe SIGMA also makes some all-solid guitars in this price range.

Zurf & Roger ... those are wonderful accounts, and I do thank you for them! And obviously we agree with J. S. Bach about the lofty power of music:

"Music is an agreeable harmony for the honor of God, and the permissible delights of the soul."

Where would we be without music!?

Thanks again ...
