Ok... before the site turns into an evil buzz from all those that don't like the others celebrating "Christmas" as a holiday surrounding the birth of Christ... I want to say to everyone... HAPPY Holidays!

If you're celebrating:
Christmas
winter solstice
Bodhi Day
Hanukkah
Day of the Return of the Wandering Goddess
Feast of Sacrifice or Day of Sacrifice
the Hajj
Soyal
Saturnalia
Yule
Zartusht-no-diso
1000 Lamp Mandala Ceremony
Fesivus
Krismas
Kwanza
Omisoka
Shabe-Yalda
Or anything else I might have missed....

Then I just want to wish you ALL a very HAPPY HOLIDAY to you and your family!

If you're not celebrating anything... then I hope you have a nice December.

Please... respect other's choices in what they choose to celebrate or not celebrate and don't beat each other over the head for their choices and their good wishes to others who choose to celebrate similarly.  Let's all choose to show good humanity to one another this December.  It's the LEAST we can do for our online FRIENDS!  If we can't all agree to do that... then why are we here?  Inhumanity is, in my humble opinion, not an option.

Sorry to hear "perfect rage" didn't enjoy your song choice Toots... I did tho... thank you AGAIN for sharing it with us all.  Pastor Laurence, thank you for sharing Neil Diamond's version... I haven't heard that in a while!  He has such a... STRONG emotion in his music.  Bless you.

Um... welcome to Chordie rage... I hope you get to know folks around here and enjoy yourself... or not.  To each his own I guess.

"I transpose it to G to fit my voice" ... I've heard that somewhere before ... hmmmm... smile

Here's Walbaye's version:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6_eBNM0Eu8
He's still working on mixing it for better quality, but if you want to "hear" what he's talking about... he's pretty darn good!

WELCOME TO CHORDIE!

WOW Jeff... 6 inches is a lot for the area you're in.  Good to hear those doing the plowing were able to keep up with it well.  Will it stay cold enough to keep the snow around for Christmas?

Cam... it is interesting isn't it?  I live about 30 minutes from my father's house... he's in that "tug hill region" and the night we got 4 inches, he got that 3 feet.  Just amazing!  North Carolina still sounds like a good place to live, especially if 6 inches is the "worst of it"!

Bushy... good LORD!  Over 100 degrees F is NOT on my list of places to visit let alone live or work!  Well... maybe I'd visit as long as I could get into some air conditioned spaces!  Keep cool!  That's some serious heat to have to be working in.

I heard Charlotte was "shut down" for this storm... and it never came.  Did you actually get any snow Jeff?

Congrats Linusguitar!  Thank you again Pix!

I don't use a calculator, I usually use my fingers smile

I have played with several people that have a cheat sheet stuck on top of their guitar or dobro

C F G

G C D

A D E

D A G

E A B

These are 1,4 5  Chord progressions, and if someone says 1,4,5 in the key of D  they don't have to think about smile

AHHH!  Now you're talking my language!  Perhaps if I just sit down and figure this all out, and then make up some cheat sheets, I may actually learn something (and if not, I'll have the cheat sheets!)

Jerome... I love the idea of the circle of 5th tattoo!  Hmmm... now you've got me thinking!  Too bad you're so far away, my husband is a tattoo artist but it's not his day job.  He's darn cheap!  So much that I yell at him a lot for it!  Of course that just turns on his selective hearing mode.

Russell - that is good info to know... but then when I start looking at scales and thinking about how it could be possible to remember them and construct chords, the 7th is just another thing to try to figure in there and it does get tricky.  I might just keep that tid bit of info in the back of my head tho!  It is a pretty basic note to keep in mind.  I like that Wayne started out slow with just one key however... it gets aweful confusing when I look at one scale, then another, then another and try to think of how I could figure this all out "on the fly"

It is after how chords are formed that I get lost.  I always did well in math class... but ALWAYS needed pen and paper (or calculator) to get by... never could do it in my head... and I think that's my problem with music theory as well.  I will study this tho with my pen and paper and try to get it!  Thanks Wayne!

Well... it does sound, softer... but then, you're also farther from the camera and I didn't hear the "clicking" in the first place.  You're doing well for the time you've been playing... keep it up!

Wow!  Disecting the F.

OK, couple of things.

It is a barre.  The barre does not imply that you must barre across the entire fretboard, only that you are moving the effective placement of the nut.   Any time you use one finger to mash more than one string, you're barring.  Consider D major, for example.  You can barre that and move it all over the fretboard, too, but there's no need to play the E or A strings, as they don't play into the chord for that shape.

F major is F A C.   If you play the "cheater version" you end up with C F A C, which is the 2nd inversion of F (but still F).  If you don't strike either the E or A strings, then you have F A C F again, which is a proper F major chord.

If what you want is that deep boom in your songs, then play the "full barre" voicing.  If you don't want it, all of those other voicing are perfectly legitimate options.

And Merry Christmas, or whatever it is you choose to be happy about.

Thank you!  I appreciate the dissection.

Hmmm... and to think, this thread started out as "how do I play F?" and turned into a music theory lesson.  Ahhh... that music theory keeps poking jabs at me everywhere I go... I must learn it... I must... but I've been fighting it since high school, "Amy, take music theory with me, get some voice lessons, and apply to Fredonia" ... ahhh... if I learn some music theory now, maybe by the time I turn 60 I'll be ready for Fredonia!  LMAO!

Very moving and though provoking indeed.... I agree, no one really likes war yet sometimes it's a necessity and most important to remember those around the world fighting for their countries and for the freedoms of their loved ones.

LOL!  Jeff... we got about 4 inches the day before yesterday, the only hitch was that there were no after school activities.  It takes a REAL blizzard to actually shut down the roads... that is for the people who want to use that as an excuse not to go to work, but a lot of folks still do.  Here in the rural areas when it's snowing like crazy the back roads are the last to get plowed so it's common for them to have 2-4 inches of fresh powdery snow on them and everyone still drives through it!

In fact... Here's what it looked like outside my house Wednesday night
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs111.snc3/15840_1319889555944_1191936679_30971083_8117446_n.jpg
I hear they got about 3 foot up on Tug Hill Wednesday night (a famous area around here for great snowmobile trails all winter long) and they're happy as pigs in poo!

I understand that there's not a plethora of plows and salt trucks in the south, so I can appreciate the concern over "nearly half a foot of snow" as it's probably exaggerated.  Yet, you're talking about that coming down over a course of several days... hmmm.... and ... running to the store to stock up like a blizzard is on the way... huh?  LOL!  Thanks for the giggle!

Nice story!  Thanks for sharing it!  Given the situation with the school function and all... I'd have given in too!

GREAT inspirational stories!

We know a little old lady who was probably very crabby in her youth (heck, she's pretty crabby now).  She has family alive, but none of them have anything to do with her.  My mother in law has befriended her and drives her around doing her errands as she can't see well anymore.  She has fallen in love with my little girls.  She thinks the world of them.  Sooo... we invite her to school functions and such... she spent Christmas morning with us last year.  She can get "mouthy" with her opinions, but I just let it slide off remembering that older folks have opinions for reasons, and chances are they're right even if I don't agree at the moment!  We give her pictures of the kids... and my 4 year old treats her just like a grandmother giving her hugs and kisses and such.  Well... I just found out that she has a fortune that she does not wish to share with her family that has nothing to do with her.  This year she paid for half of my daughter's dance classes, sent us $300 for Christmas and insisted ALL presents come from SANTA (but agreed to allow me to write her name on ONE SMALL gift for each kid) and my mother in law says she's said something about her will... her car to my son and a portion of her estate to my girls.  I wish I didn't know this stuff... cuz I'd like to just be kind to her without the info as I have been all along... she's in her late 80's and she deserves a little family like everyone else.  When I said to her, "Loretta, you know you don't have to do this for Christmas, that's a lot of money for the kids especially after paying half of Steph's dance!" ... she got angry with me and in a TONE said, "Well now that's stupid, of course I don't HAVE to."

You never know who you're encountering.  That crabby old lady in line at the grocery store might just be crabby because she needs a little love.  A simple smile goes a LONG way if that's all you can afford to give!

LOL!  Ok... so I'm only cheating if I play a Fmaj7 in place of an open F?  YAY!  And here I thought it was considered a cheater if you didn't use the "barre" F!  Wayne... you have made my day with your rant!  smile

As for the barre F... did I get that part right on how to play it?  That one I posted is THE (one of the) "barre F" right?  Say "BARRE F" fast three times...

there... now I'm done too  smile  LOL!

Thanks Old Doll!  Cute!  The Irish accents aren't difficult... it's the Scottish accents I have more of a problem with (but LOVE to hear still!).  I love the Santa song!  LOL!

Ha ha!  No problem, any time!  Hey... if you click on my website link, you can see how I'm progressing too... remember to crank the volume way down and put your earplugs in first!  smile  LOL!

I can't hold a pick... they literally fall OUT of my hand... I am experimenting with a thumbpick and loving it ... but I did just get a slew of neat and different picks in the "picks around the world" (check the chat thread) ... so we shall see!

David, no the configuration xx3211 is not considered a barre chord... it's considered a "cheater F" because it is NOT a barre chord.

This is the F barre chord that the guys are talking about http://www.chordimages.com/ramimages/i6/Fchord_133211_1.png
as I get it... you're going to barre (put your index finger across) the entire first fret, then use your middle, ring and pinky for the other three (not sure how to write that in numbers?) ... but there's lots of ways to play the same chord... click on resources up top, then on the large chord chart... scroll down to F and click on the image to see variations

Correct me if I'm wrong oh mighty barre chord gurus!

Dino... as for cheating on vocals... I recommend beer!  LOL!  See Zurf's signature line for more details!

I can't hear any clicking... maybe it's just the sound of the pick on the strings that you "don't like" or aren't used to?  I've only been playing a few months too... so, maybe one of these chordie pros will have a better idea!  Sounds good I think!
