I had a 1969 Les Paul Standard. Was the greatest Electric guitar I ever owned and I had a lot of them.  Sadly I sold it to upgrade to Martin acoustics. That was not a mistake but I still miss the Les Paul.

I have not heard of this method before. I have heard that Banjo's sound better when they are thrown in a dumpster.
Glad to hear both of you survived this method.

Art, I usually oil the fret board when I change strings. When I change strings I take all the strings off. So the strings are not in the way at all. Some folks don't like to remove all the strings bit I have never had issues from doing that and I've been doing it for over 30 years.
Use a lemon oil specificly for fret board use. And don't over appy. Wipe off any excess completely. You don't need to over appy, use just enough to get into the wood.
Hope this helps.

B-
Good point. I've never really noticed a a tonal difference when I capo and I do it alot.
But maybe I just don't have the perfect ear either.
I'm sure he changes guitars when he doesn't capo which makes easier to stay in which ever key he is in. And no one wants to tune and retune one guitar for a few different songs.
I'm sure he has his reason's or quirks for doing it.
Again good points .

  Joe

I saw a video with James Taylor discussing his method for tuning a guitar. He said if you capo a lot as he does, standard E tuning will cause certain strings to go flat or sharp when a capo is added. First you need to have a tuner that will read "Cents" on the tuning meter. A lot of tuners have the "Cent" feature but are not real defined. What you think may just be lines on the tuner are "Cent" markers . If yours will read "Cent" in numbers this will be easier to do. There is a Plus and Minus side for the "Cent" markers. These are all on the Minus side.
Here's how he does it.

  E minus 3  ,  B minus 6  ,  G minus 4 ,  D minus 8  , A minus 10 , E minus 12
    or
E - 3 , B - 6 , G - 4 , D - 8 , A - 10 , E - 12

I haven't tried this yet. Wondering if anyone else uses this method ?

Roger,
I've been looking for a set of those for years. Glad to see they added an extra high E string like they did in the old days !!!!!

Alvin Lee of Ten Years After passed away after routine surgery. Who could forget his performance at Woodstock. We lost another great guitarist. RIP.

If you saw a photo of a particular guitar could you tell who owned it ? For me I think Paul McCartney's Hofner Bass guitar is a very Iconic guitar. It was deemed "The Beatle Bass".
Just wondering who you would pick ?

DS, I agree this should be a family orientated site. All who use it should be respectful to others who use it.

In my opinion the more you write the better your songs will become. We all have songs we don't think are great. Some of those turn out to be the ones most liked by other people. You never know how songs will affect your listeners.
We all have piles of song material that never gets used because we just don't think it measures up. Keep that material. Someday somewhere you may use it.
I spend a lot of time rewriting and refining. Sometimes a song just pops out and it sounds great from the start. Most times I'm refining.
Just keep writing. The more you do it the better your songs will be.

Just got the Guitar Center catalog they advertise a Taylor 214ce with Nylon Strings and pickup.
Probably a good sounding guitar.

I have a Taylor 314ce. I love the guitar. It has the Expression system which I really like for plugging into an amp or PA. It's my main giging guitar when I solo. I highly recomend a 314ce and I really wouldn't mind owning two of them. But a 314ce isn't a nylon string. I know Taylor makes one with the Expression system option but I don't know what model it is. Enjoy the journey.

It's the start of removing incandesent bulbs from the market place. They are the least energy effcient bulbs produced. Check out the cost of LED's which will be the new replacements. LED's are suppose to give you way more life and use less energy but cost are high. I have been stocking up on the cheaper bulbs myself.

I had a 1969 Les Paul and a 1978 ES335 with DiMarzio pickups in both positions. DiMarzio's were put in Gibsons to help cut through the sound of Synthitsizers. Both the 69 and 78 came this way from the factory I was told.In the day you had to use a Fender guitar to cut through the Synth's sound because of their pickups. DiMarzio's  allowed Gibson fans to use their guitars in the mix. Being yours is a 1968 model you should do more research. I don't know what year they started puting them in and it could be a first year run as you have two different pickups. But there could be  other reasons you have two different pickups.
I've always loved Gibson Electric's. What model is yours ?

Ed, I 'm starting to suspect the gremlins myself. The techs that did my install couldn't explain it and had never seen that before. But as you said why the G string ? Can't say you didn't try to figure this out. You spent the time to change out the pickups and try the amp. There must be a logical explanation out there somewhere. Maybe someone out there has the answer.

My favorite is an old 1940's film ,  Woman in the Window. It stars Edward G. Robinson. It could never be redone today and do this film justice. The ending is totally unsuspected , best overall movie I've ever seen. Beats out all the westerns I'm hooked on. If you like old movies you have to see this one.

Ed , I had a '74 Guild Jumbo that did the same thing. No matter how many under the saddle pickups I had installed  they all did this same thing. Sometimes the G was there and then it was gone , come back for a while then gone. Finally I went to a Rare Earth soundhole pickup and had no further problems. Hope you solved the problem.

Happy B-day. Best site on the net !!!!!

My expensive taste comes from 45 years of scratching ,saving and working hard for the guitars I really wanted. As a working musician they are not only toys but my tools of the trade. None were bought on a whim with household cash and I gave up all my other hobbies to own these. Sorry for my extravagance!!!!
