All I can say is G!!! (as in the chord you're strumming in the photo).
That pic must bring back great memories Roger. Do you still keep in touch with your old band-mates? And do you still own those plaid slacks?

Some of us aren't that creative. As Dave Van Ronk said, "Why play a mediocre song I wrote when I can play a terrific song someone else wrote?"
That terrific song sounds terrific when someone else is playing it other than me............
That's why I write my own songs, so folks won't know how bad I play covers.

Sound like we have similar plans for this year TF
1. New grandson - although I have two grandsons that live in Florida, my son had a boy born last fall that lives just 70 miles away. Jen and I visit him at least once a week and plan to continue when we are not off visiting our other kids or out-of-state friends.
2. New knee - I had my right knee replaced about 18 months ago and the left one is scheduled for Feb 3. It should be healed in plenty of time for spring hiking/fishing/camping.
3. Travel - I hope to visit more out-of-state friends for some fishing, boating and camping adventures, as well as some campfire guitar pickin'.
DE
Left knee replacement is scheduled for Feb 3. which would allow for 6 weeks of healing before Chordiestock. The chances are slim, but depending on how rehab goes and a couple other factors I may still be able to make it.
I'm definitely interested in an event in VA.
DE
Man. I'll sure miss you at Chordiestock if you can't make it DE. Sonya and I were talking about a possible June Zurfapalooza, possibly along the Shenandoah. The Potomac campground where Ben used to have the Gatherodeos got all cleaned up and now they want half a fortune for sites. It's a nice campground, but not worth more per night than a Motel 6 room.
That place where we had the Zurfapalooza a few years ago when Normtheguitar joined us worked out pretty well. Also, the Andy Guest State Park is good, but not quite so free with the adult beverages as our crowd generally prefers.
What date in June are you thinking about Zurf? The Riversmallies Buckeye Rodeo is usually around the first weekend of June and this year Al Agnew is wanting to put together an RS event in Arkansas or Missouri about the second week.
DE
I may have a change in plans. I have an appointment with a surgeon Monday to determine if my left knee needs replaced. It's been getting worse, affecting my walking and keeping me awake at night. If the decision is to go with the surgery, it'll impact my traveling to Florida for Chordiestock. I'll know more after Monday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!
Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

I host a fishing get-together here in southern Ohio for fishermen that hang out on the Riversmallies website each year in early June. There may also be a RS gathering in Arkansas late May/early June, plus I'm expecting some visitors sometime in the summer (date hasn't been confirmed yet). Still, if it there is no conflict I'd be interested in attending your Clarion River Jam.
DE ... I saw your mention of www.riversmallies.com and had to reply. I visited the site a few times in the past, to get outfitting tips for my kayaks. I fish a number of slow moving rivers from the 'yak here in Nova Scotia, primarily for brook trout. Lots of great help there on anchoring techniques.
I hung out on the RS site for about ten years and met many paddlers/fishermen/campfire pickers which are now great friends (its where I met Zurf). The site closed for a short time and I re-registered when it started back up but it has never seemed quite the same so I don't post very often anymore.

Great to hear that things are going well TF. Did you experience an increase in pain after you left the hospital? My incision was glued so no stitches or staples needed to be removed. Getting range of motion back may take some work. I went to therapy every day for a couple weeks after I returned home and then a couple times a week for the next month, but I assume each case is different. My house is a two-story with all the bedrooms upstairs so I had to negotiate stairs from day one. 12 days after the operation I was on my riding mower and began driving my truck again at 19 days although I was told to wait 10 weeks since it was my right knee and might affect using the gas pedal and brake.
I plan to make an appointment next week to have my left knee evaluated. It has deteriorated to the point the pain is keeping me awake at night. I'm hoping that I can get a replacement operation scheduled for right after the holidays so I'll be good to go for Chordiestock in March.
Again, glad to hear you're doing well.

Well TF, its been over 10 days now, so how's the knee doing?
The song I have problems playing is "I Still Can't Say Goodbye", written by Bob Blinn and Jimmy Moore. Its been recorded by several folks but favorite versions are Merle Haggard (on his Chicago Wind album) and this one by Chet Adkins:

After years of sitting in front of a computer as an engineer in the nuclear industry, I've become somewhat of a Luddite in my retirement. I only use a computer for email and to check weather and creek levels each morning (to decide where I'll go fishing), shop and visit a couple sites like Chordie. I never download any music nor upload my own songs, instead I make CDs of my original music and give them to friends who want to hear my songs. If you want to hear any of my music Bill, PM me your mailing address and I'll send you some samples (on CDs of course)

Glad to see the Huskies make the playoffs. I hope you're right Jerome, but 'm not too sure about the Buckeyes against Clemson. Hopefully coach Meyer will have them playing better than they did their last few games. I thought that Penn State might replace OSU in the top four. I think they were the better team at the end of the season, but having two losses was too much to overcome with the committee.
I hope all goes well TF. I had my right knee replaced last year. I wasn't prepared for the amount of pain the first 3 days or so but the pain got manageable shortly after that. Make sure you follow the rehab regimen. I have a stationary bicycle and that helped a lot. I had sciatic nerve issues for quite a while as I adjusted to the difference of walking with the new knee. It took about 6 months before I felt things had completely healed and the knee feels great now. I only wish I hadn't put it off for so long. Like you, my left knee is now a candidate for replacement.
With conference championship games still to be played this weekend, the last NCAA regular-season rankings have been released. #1 is 12-0 Bama with wins over #11,14,21,and 22. They will play #15 Florida for the SEC championship. Win or lose they will be in the playoff. #2 is 11-1 OSU with their #1 strength of schedule, having beaten #5,6,and 9 and a loss to #7. They won't be in the Big 10 championship game but I don't think the committee will drop them from the playoffs. Jim Hairball has been whining all week about "the spot" that supposedly cost #5 UM the game (although he doesn't mention the lost fumble and 2 picks) and there must be 10,000 pix posted on the net by Michigan fans "proving" Barrett didn't make the line of gain on 4th down but none of them show his forward progress before falling back. Overhead shots show he not only made it, the refs may have spotted the ball a little short of his forward progress. As Jerome said, the Buckeyes won't be playing for the Big 10 championship, they have the best over-all record in the Big 10 but #7 PSU wins the in-conference tie breaker and will play #6 Wisconsin. The Lions are 10-2 with a win over #2 and losses to #5 and 25, the #6 Badgers are also 10-2 with a win over #21 and losses to #2 and #5. Ranked at #3 is11-1 Clemson. Their strength of schedule is ranked 8th and they have wins over teams ranked 12, 13, 14 and a loss to #25. They meet #23 Va Tech in their championship game and a win will put them in the playoffs. At #4 is 11-1 Washington. They have the weakest strength of schedule (#15) among the top-ranked teams with wins over #18 and 20 and a loss to #11. Still, if they win over #8 Colorado this weekend, it'll beef up their resume and they'll be in the four-team playoff. Should be an exiciting weekend of college football.
I'm a big Buckeye fan, but it seems odd that OSU is ranked #2 even though they can't be in the Big 10 conference championship. I'm not sure in my mind that they are currently one of the best 4 teams in college football. They are the youngest of all the "Power 5" teams, playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores so they are pretty inconsistent in their performance. Guess it'll all shake out soon and maybe they'll surprise me.

I mostly flat pick but occasionally write/play songs that sound better finger picked. As I've always been a nail biter and the work I did was always busting my nails, I found that a combination of a Fred Kelly thumb "speed pick" and metal banjo finger picks work for me on my wider-necked steel-stringed acoustics.
I sometimes play with an old guy from Kentucky who uses picks on his thumb and all four fingers and plays a lot of old blues and country songs from the 1940's -50's. It looks awkward but his fingers fly on the strings.

Thanks Dino. I hope everyone has a great holiday and gets to spend time with family and friends.

Sounds like we had similar beginnings Bill. I also started playing drums when I was 12 years old in Jr. High School. My folks were pretty poor and drums were the only instruments that parents didn't need to purchase as they were provided by the school. Through practice, I got pretty good and when I moved up to High School I was the "first chair" drummer much to the chagrin of the upper classmen who were drummers. I was picked for the "all county" band and received a few accolades so our band director talked my parents into buying me a set of Ludwigs so I could play in the jazz band and looking back they sacrificed quite a bit so I could play. My heroes were Joe Morello and Ed Thigpen but like you, that changed after the Beatles made their appearance in the US. I played drums in a rock band in high school that played local high school dances etc and also with a 17-piece "Big Band" that played at country club and Elks dances, etc. I also taught rudimental drumming and had 14 students.
But then one of those "life changing" events happened. After I graduated from high school, a couple of guys that had graduated a few years ahead of me and were pretty good guitar and bass players, had spent some time in Nashville doing studio work. They returned to my home town and were wanting to put a country band together and needed a drummer. I thought I was too "kool" to play country music so in an effort to change my mind they took me to a country/bluegrass festival hoping that I'd like the music and have a change of heart. What happened is I didn't care a lot for the country bands but the bluegrass pickers blew me away. Maybe it was music that appealed to my Appalachian roots, but regardless - I was hooked! However, as you know, the genre does not use drums but rather a heavy bass line to keep the beat steady. A changed man, I quit playing with the bands I was in and few months later sold my drums. It was several years later I finally tried to learn how to "mash the wires" on an acoustic. I've never been good enough to play bluegrass very well but there's still no other style of music that gets my feet tapping. Its now been over 45 years since I've picked up a drumstick.

Cool. Good song choices, people always like songs they know or Blues tunes. Can't go wrong with those. I remember my first open mics. I was pretty nervous but still had lots if fun. It's always a good place to get started. I still like to play a few, But nervousness is gone. I've played so many shows in the last 22 years the jitters are gone and it's pure fun. Hope this is a bit of encouragement for all the people who are thinking about playing at open mics. Thanks for sharing.
Joe
I agree people like songs they know, but I use open mics to try out new songs I've written. At some of the venues the audience listens and I get feedback but at others the drunks at the bar are miffed because they can't impress their lady friends that they know the lyrics.
DE
Thanks for sharing Pete. Good songs tell stories, great songs like Derek's paint pictures. His style reminds me of Townes Van Zandt.
DE
Good stuff Joe. I played an open mic last week and due to my damaged finger, all songs were played out of D with alternate fingerings and the damaged middle finger of my left hand sticking up in the air. If there was a video, it would look like I was flipping the audience "the bird" while playing.
Thanks for all the sympathy and kind sentiments everyone.
The finger was unwrapped today and after cutting away dead skin its about 1/8" shorter than it was. Good news is that the nerve endings were damaged so I'm not really feeling much pain. I heal quickly according to the doctors that have treated a multitude of injuries I've incurred over the years from doing stupid things so I expect it shouldn't be but 2-3 weeks before I can use it. Right now I'm having fun trying to figure out alternate ways to form chords with my other fingers. I can pretty much play anything that only has 3 chords and is in the keys of A or D although the chord changes are a little slow.
