I hope it's not considered cheating to participate in other guitar forums but I posted this same story here: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/foru … ?t=244077, where the conversation took a decidedly different path.

Congratulations Zurf! But you know, your photo "promise" is analogous to saying "the check's in the mail".

This proves you ARE human and can/will succumb to GAS even if only infrequently.

Zurf,
Regarding Chordie: Mission Fail. Funny, he did ask how I was learning and I said YouTube, which is true, but shame on me. From now on I will make sure I refer folks to Chordie.

Mekidsmom,
I recently discovered "Music Fog" and it's been very pleasant.

I've seen that "Beast of Burden" take before. I had to shut my eyes to turn off the fur:)

Check this version out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLsAsuE- … plpp_video
Much easier on the eyes.

Mekidsmom,
This guy did not look like Rockefeller but he knew nothing about guitars. Nothing. He was guided by the sales person and the appeal of the sound of the guitar. I might have shown him other options but I do not work there and didn't want to disrupt the sale. Not my place. In some ways it was hard to watch as I suspect this was a near-impulse buy. But I maintained a positive approached and applauded him on his selection and wished him the best of luck.

Yes, he was looking for reassurance and piled it on. I wish someone had done that for me when, three years ago, i walked in to buy my first guitar.

So I walk into Guitar Center yesterday. I was in the area of the GC Mothership in Atlanta and found some time to deviate from what I was supposed to be doing. I head straight for the acoustic room. When I walk in there is a man smiling at me with a big grin. I say hello and we exchange pleasantries and the conversation begins. It turns out he has just decided to buy a Martin D-15M and he tells me this with much excitement.

This model is one of my favorites so I dive into the conversation and forego browsing. The guy tells me his doctor told him he needed a hobby if he was to continue aging in this world. (He looked about my age.) He said he always loved the sound of the acoustic guitar do he was going to buy one and learn to play. I compliment him on his choice of instruments while secretly wishing I could afford one. He could not play a thing and so I was able to dazzle him with my G-C-D chord progression and some crude finder-picking I'm trying to learn. He thought I was Jimmy Page!

I watched as he proceeded to take delivery of a brand new, minty fresh, D-15M right out of the box. Of course, he bought a stand, tuner, and a handful of picks. I was so excited for him. Here he was taking the first steps of his musical journey. He walked out of the store guitar in hand and big smile on his face.

I sat down with another D-15M and the DRS1 and played them for about 45 minutes. The whole time I was thinking how lucky he was in finding his new hobby. Of course, I was also trying to figure out how I could get a D-15.

Played on a Seagull Entourage Mini Jumbo.

After reading Bob Taylor's book I was bitten by the Taylor bug and sought out a few to play. Just to see what all the fuss was about. The GS Mini was the only one I could actually afford but I quite liked it. Taylor makes an all-mahogany version which greatly appeals to me.

You guys need to knock this off right now...and get back to playing. The 15 series guitars are great...just a little pricey for me right now.
I also played a "The Loar", I think it was a 309 arch top with P90 pick-up, whatever that is. Interesting.

I suppose Brill-o pads and Comet are right out as far as guitar maintenance goes?

I do occasionally use Pledge on the bodies of my shiny guitars. But it is used sparingly. The Satin guitars might get a light wiping down with a damp cloth. The fretboard gets lemon oil every once in a while during string changes.

Most of the time now my wife just rolls her eyes or hands me a subtle smile. I've managed to market my guitar fund as a tool to buy her things as well. When she says she wants an iPad, I say well I'll have to sell a few guitars first. And whether I sell to raise capital or not she thinks I do so when I purchase another guitar I get a pass as she sort of feels like she "owes" me.

By the way my guitar headcount is two.

Outstanding!

Back in Atlanta, the audition behind us. My daughter thinks she did well and the whole family loved Vanderbilt U. Vandy really knows how to host. Nashville is on my list for potential cities to live in. Clean, smaller then Atlanta (less traffic, etc.), and I've never seen so many runners! I thought Atlanta had a lot but Nashville is filled with people running for fun. And as you know from my dog bite post, I run also.

March 23rd is the decision date. Keeping my fingers crossed and my prayers current.

p.s. I did not get to experience any of the music scene. My primary mission was my daughter and Vanderbilt so I stayed focused on that. I did NOT buy any guitars either!

p.p.s I did manage to read Bob Taylor's book (Guitar Lessons: A Life's Journey Turning Passion into Business) during the trip. A very good book. I can't stop thinking about it.  I may put a few words together regarding the book.

We leave today. Coffee with my daughter this morning. She seems confident and ready.

By the way, Craig's List exists in Nashville! Who knew? I've contacted two local sellers regarding guitars. Now, how do I broach this with the wife? Maybe: "I'm going out for bagels. Be back soon. " (Guitar in hand.)

Good luck David. I started playing at 20 (for six months, maybe) and resumed at 45. Now I'm 48 and about eight years behind you.

Thanks for the confidence in my playing. However, i am not as confident and don't really think I'm ready yet. Maybe next time.

I like the stratobond neck on the two Little Martins I've owned. But I don't own them anymore. On a larger guitar it seemed to make the guitar "top heavy". But this wasn't a big deal for me and I rather liked the appearance even though it is unconventional. I do think the aggregate of HPL back and/or sides AND the neck cause me to look for more conventional guitars in the same price range. Just too many trade-offs to reduce cost. Although they sound good.

I almost bought a DRS1 (all-sapele) but it SCREAMED of cost-saving measures. But, it sounded good and I couldn't hear the difference between is and the D-15M which costs twice as much. So, I'd say they accomplished their goal of delivering the sound at a greatly reduced price but may have sold their soul to do so.

The hotel reservations are made. Thanks to me we are staying in or near a place called "Music Row" which is conveniently close to Vanderbilt University. I remain hopeful this is a "good" area and we can move around on foot.

Mekidsmom, Yes, sight-reading is tough.
