Well, I've been lettng things go for nearly 2 years due to health conditions so I started music lessons, again. I found a teacher who has degrees in music composition , music theory and voice, gig's with a band, and teaches all levels of playing skills. We are going to work on some theory, excerises to help the stiffness in my hands from surguries, rythem skills, walk-ups and walk downs and various ways to improve my playing skill and style. Had my 1st intro lesson, yesterday, which was mostly just talking about my playing level, what I wanted to accomplish, setting some goals and practice excerises. We also discussed his qualification, references skill level. Here lately my guitar practice has consisted doing practally nothing. I'll pick up my guitar, play a few chords, maybe play a song or 2, put the guitar down and not play for 2 or 4 days. I'm hoping these lessons will make me play / prtactice more and give me back the "want too".

Might wanna check out the license requirements for the area you are in. Since you will now be getting paid for your service you will assume a business enity rersponsibility. Along with that comes taxes, even if you are paid in cash or tips, you have to pay taxes. At the end of the year the "owner" gives you a 1099 for all the "income" you made and the government will want their share. There are even some songs that require permission from the "MUSIC POLICE" in order for you to proform them. I sure Russell or Jerome can provide better info on this than I can and will provide additional advice. Anyway, good luck with everything.

I have had hand issues from "trigger finger" for years. This has led to 6 surguries, 3 on each hand. After the surguries I was sent to physical therapy by the doctor who used a hot wax treatment on my hands. This treatment consists of a small tank filled with melted pariffin wax that you dip your hands and coat with the wax After dipping you cover your hands with hot, damp towels  for about 15 minutes. Then the coating of wax is pealed off and your hands are massaged for a few minutes - this feels great. You can get this hot wax tant, pariffin wax at most pharmacy's or even at Wal Mart. They are NOT expensive. This treatment requires 2 people. Another thing I enjoy is to wrap my hands around a good hot cup of coffee in the mornings.

Welcome, Bugz24. If I understand your post correctly you are teaching yourself to play but your "fretting" hand has 2 fingers that will not straighten out causing difficulities in you making some chords. Correct? Let's see if this will help you. Do you know the chord progressions? ( chords that go together in a certian key) A guitarist plays to the key of the singers voice so if the song is being sung in the key of "G" the chord progression would be "G..C..D". Chords for the key of "A" would be "A..D..E". Key of "D" chords would be >D..G..A".This is just a few, you will need to learn all chord progressions. These progressions are for simple 3 chord songs. Now, what chords can you make. Once we know that it will be easier to help you. Also, what type of music do you like / want to play. There are thousands of 3 chord songs, in all genre's, that are simple to play. If your hand won't allow you to make chords there are way's where you can make the chords with only 1 finger. Do a search of Dolly Parton and watch how she plays a guitar with 2" nails. Take some time, practice tha chords and scales and learn what you can and cannot do with your handicap. Once you know what you can do you can concentrate on that element.

Finally able to access the Chordie site after nearly 5 days. Was almost into the withdrawal stage with no morning Chordie. Thanks. Per, for your efforts (and anyone else involved) in getting the site back up and running.

Looked at the Bass Pro Shop catalog last nite at their cloths, gloves and hats. Gonna be checking them out. Not sure what I'm gonna do about my garden, though. May get somebody to help on halves. Guess I'll have to spend more time night fishing. Good thing there are some weekly night tournaments close by so maybe I can win enpough money to buy all the clothes and gear I need. Not sure yet how my hand condition will affect my music but I know it's coming. I'm supposed to play this Friday night but right now they are just too sore and getting worse with the peeling.

Just got home from M D Anderson Hospital in Houston, Tx where I underwent blood work, scans and x-rays as part of my kidney cancer treatments. This was a 3 month check-up. Got a really good report - the Doctor even said it was one of the best he has seen. My lungs, from the CT scans, showed up as being clear and in excellant shape. The lymph nodes continue to shrink and there is nothing signifigamt showing up there. This is the goodt news.

This is the bad news. About 2 weeks ago I developed a bad rash on my forearms, back of my hands, chest, back and legs. Luckly the rash did not show up anywhere that I could not scratch in public. I was told by the doctors to treat the rash with a cortizone cream and was given a pill for the itch. The rash has almost gone away but everywhere it was is peeling. Where the skin is peeling it is leaving a multitude sores. These are mostly on my hands where the skin was the thickest. Understant, I have a big mans hands that are used to doing work. Big, rough and a lotta calluses. The doctors at M D Anderson got the see this for the first time today. Their comments are that it is a reaction to the oral cancer meds and the SUN! I have been phishing a few times and working in my garden, as well. THyE SAID TO STAY OUTTA THE SUN - KEEP COVERED UP - WHEar LONG SLEEVE SHIRTS - BIG HATS TYO COVER FACE AND EARS - LONG PANTS - AND LOTS OF SUN SCREEN -OH DODO!
My hands look terrible, the skin is peeling everywhere. It's even peeling on the palms of my hands and all around my fingers where the skin is the thickest. I can feel the skin drawing up and getting tight. The texture of the skin has completely changed. I may even loose my calluses on my fingertips. I was told this reaction was typical of CHEMO burns and this would just take time to run it's course. I have stopped my oral meds for the next 2 weeks to see if this helps. When I restart i'll have to keep a sharp eye out for signs of the rash coming back. If it does there may need to be a medicine change in the future. The problem with that is what I am taking is keeping the cancer in check and working. It's the side affects that cause the problems.

Chuck, most of us kinda browse in the morning time while drinking our coffee. Some of us wait until the afternoon and browse while having a beer, some wate until late at night and have a shot of something harder. The younger crowd tinds to stick with kool-aid or coke=cola. The "Chat" page gets most of the action but there are several other "topic" pages worth checking out. If you gotta question you need to ask it. If you got an answer to someone else's post, then offer it.

Nela

Zurf, just a thought on the truck window. Check to see if the window has been "locked-out" by the child safety device.

Nela

Bushy, sorry to read about your problems. Here's hoping you will suffer thru all yuour trials and tribulation and come out on top of everything.

Zurf, you own everything in the house main all the wat to where it ties into the city sewer main. Afraid you won't get any help from the city. One thing you could do is ask your plumbing service to "camera" the drain line from the kitchen out to the house main. Also, you should have a "clean-out" on the house main located somewhere outside prior to the city main. Running a camera down the line will tell you if you have a colasped line, broken line, grease log or just a bunch of roots in the system. Rotor Rooter can do this service for you as well as hydro-jet the line. Shouldn't be too expensive. Do you have a garbage disposal connected to the sink drain. If so, they are know to contribute to the build-up of grease in the drain line. If you have a GD be sure to flush it with hot water after using it.

Chuck - welcome to chordie. I see you registered July of 2007. Kinda makes you a Old Timer with only 1 post. Come and join in on the topics that draw your interest.

If'n you can't clean the sink drain from underneath the kitchen sink it's most likely a "grease log" somewhere before the drain connects to the main. Might need to go outside, find the drain line, dig down, cut clean from there and patch back. Go buy a new washing machine and get back on the wife's good side - you know they come with a matching dryer, don't you. Hose bib leaking - shut the water off at main - remove handle - get new rubber seat - install - replace handle - turn handle to see if water flows - remember water is off at main, turn water main back on - check hose bib - should be fixed. Quick fix for the passenger window on your truck - don't roll daow - use A/C. If you really, really. really want to fix this check the fuse - if not the fuse you'll need to learn how to walk different. This fix is a pain in the butt - replace the motor.

Back to the kitchen sink - in the wall behind the kitchen you will have a drain line and vent stack. If you have a bathroom that backs up to the wall it will be a common drain - also same if you have a upstairs bath above the kitchen. Depending on the codes where you live this is usualiy a 2 1/2" PVC pipe.  This pipe will go thru yiour slab, underground and tye into a "house main" (usually 4"). This line will exit the house slab and go out to where the main sewer line is located. Somewhere between the sink drain and the main sewer tye in I expect you would find a "grease log". If this is not the issue and your home is old enough to have clay tile drzin lines then it may have colapsed or they may be full of roots.

Dishwasher drains into the kitchen drain line above the p-trap. Most times the stopages here is due to a build up of grease. Disconnect the p-trap from the sink drain and where it goes into the wall. The p-trap will hold water so don't spill it. Now wash out the p-trap and make sure it is clean on the inside. A smart idea would be to go to another sink location to wash out the p-trap as you just disconnected it from the kitchen sink. The drain pipe that goes into the wall and ties into the main drain can be cleaned, most times, with a wet-vac. Just suck out all the grease and grime. If it is packed up real bad you can get a small "snake" that attaches to a drill motor and losen up the crud that way. Do not use a venemence snake as he will really get pissed. As for the washing machine, I try to act like I don't know anything about them. So don't tell my wife as I don't want to be washing clothes. The drain hose from the washing machine is a flexible hose with a "hook" on one end that is stuck into a drain line located in the washer box behind the machine. Check to see if it hasn't worked loose. Some times small items can go thru the drain line from the washing machine causing a blockage. Remove the drain line from the washer box, pucker up you lips, place them against the end of the drain and blow as hard as you can. You will need to get your wife to stick her head as far into the washing machine as she can so she can listen for air to escape. Also, check the hose for cracks / splits it it is very old. If all this works you will save a lotta money from what a plumber will charge you, your wife will think you are a hero, she may even give you that "sly" wink right after you eat some milk and cookies - if you know what I mean. Good luck.

Go for it, naol.... I too spent a lotta time away from home and family while working. As I traveled my guitar went with me and I would sit with my CD player and guitar and play in motel rooms or apartments. If I was gonna be in an area for an extended time I would visit music stores and ask about an "jam sessions" that might be going on. Got to play all over the country. It's best to show up at these "jam sessions" without your guitar a few times and just listen until you meet some of the folks. Some of these groups welcome listeners but don't necessarly welcome other players. Spend a little time and figure out if you will fit in or not.

Phil. go and buy what you need. You can always tell your wife that you was driving down the road and the new computer fell off a truck that was in front of you. I've done this with a new boat, fishing gear, a guitar and a hunting rifle. Got some strange looks from her but it seemed to work.
