I've always thought that the Martin D-15 would make a great guitar for slide work. Hope to try one out some day...

Just do it! Put togather a set that you are thoroughly comfortable with ... take a deep breath and get up there and just "Do It"... Didja know that public speaking is most people's greatest fear? People fear that more than just about anything else...same for performing... There are times that I'd be sick with apprehension about playing and then just get up and do it.... Once up and playing then it's a rush!

Re: Electric equitment (4 replies, posted in Electric)
Lots of really good amps in the 30 to 50 watt range...actually you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 30 and 50 in most cases as far as sound volume goes. Most of my experience is with Peavey products. I have a Classic 30 tube amp that compares well with anything out there. The peavey trans-tube (transistor amps) are less expensive, very durable, and have great sound. Can't really go wrong with any of the Mid range Fender amps. The Fender Tube amps are exceptional! There are lots of really good products out... Hopefully you would have the opportunity to simply plug in and play and find what works best for your needs. I think you'll find that any of the 30 watt amps are loud enough for most of the smaller gigs and sessions and can always be miked into the PA for larger venues!

I think every guitarist should at some time have the opportunity to spend some quality time with a Telecaster! That takes you right back to basics!

I've have a Mexican Strat that I've changed out the pickups and hotrodded...just absolutely love playing it... It currently has a set of Seymour Duncan pickups and sounds great! I keep hearing good things about the GFS pickups...

Re: Amp Suggestions. (3 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Good Morning! Most people can do fine with a good quality amp in the 30 watt range...they are loud enough to be played in smaller venues and can be miked for bigger ones. Plus they are a handy size and easliy portable. Yes, for purists the tube amps will have an edge in the sound...especially for smooth distortion. But truth be known...most of us can't tell the difference in a blind sound test. As Kahuna implied, give us some more information and lots of folks here can give you lots of information and suggestions...

Why not buy a Yamaha, Takamine, or Alvarez or one of the many other excellent guitars in that price range. Then spend a few extra bucks for a tuner.

Hmmm...I detect the early symptoms of GAS! Gear Aquisition Syndrom! Very addictive! As a non-recovering addict I can attest that I too have been curious about the Schecters...I've never owned or played one but perhaps some day.
Tired of the same old tone? As suggested by others...tweak the tone knob a bit, get a pedal or maybe a half dozen...check out Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio (and many others) for some different pickups that'll pop right into your Les Paul or SG and completely change their personality...
Let us know how your soon to be aquired Schecter works out for ya!

Re: BOSS Stomp Pedals (9 replies, posted in Electric)
Yes, I have several Boss Pedals...I start with the Tuner TU-2 chromatic tuner and it has the PSA a/c adapter and PCS 20A cord to power the other pedals without having to use batteries. Then a CH-1 Chorus, DD-3 Delay, and OD-1 overdrive. I plan to get a Compressor/Sustainer next and then build a pedal board to keep em all togather... you can go to www.bossus.com to see the product line up. I play mostly old rock, country, gospel, contemporary Christian, and Blues...these pedals pretty much give me any sound that I want. For metal or thrash might want a more aggressive distortion like the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone or the MD-2 Mega. Lots of choices...

Re: $600, $1,200, or $2,400 Acoustic?? Need Help! (33 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I have a Martin GTE ... the OM size and absolutely love it. It does not have near the acoustic volume of the others, D-18, Taylor, Hd, etc., but plugged in it sounds great and is well balanced. It's also a thinner body which contributes to the lower acoustic volume, but also less "boomy" and much easier (for me) to play with a strap while standing...

Re: Epiphone or Squirer (20 replies, posted in Electric)
I've got both and also have their higher priced counterparts...ie: Ephiphone Les Paul and a Gibson Les Paul....Squire Strat and a Fender Strat. Epiphone and Squire have both made some very good instruments and have also made some pretty sorry ones...especially the Squires made in Indochina! Really what I'm saying is compare them both to your needs and then try each one for the sound, playability and looks that you prefer. I'm not rich but have been collecting "player" guitars for the last twenty years or so...I have an Epiphone Les Paul special which is one of the cheap ones, but plays well, sounds good, and is really a nice instrument for the ebay price that I bought it for. The Squire...made in China...is not near up to the Fender Strat Standards but it's an awful lot cheaper...the frets were pretty rough but after some polishing and setting up it's not a bad guitar. To answer your question...I would try to scrape up around 3 or 4 hundred dollars and buy one of the higher end Epiphone Les Pauls...

I think Fender has bought out the Gretsch company (Guild and others too) and I don't think any of them are currently made in the USA. The top line 6120 and Artist editions are made in Japan...most of the others are made in China...

Re: $600, $1,200, or $2,400 Acoustic?? Need Help! (33 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Great post! I'm about ten years older than you...probably lots more experience playing...and probably not half as good a player, and have never been a professional. I'm certainly not a Know It All so I guess I fall in the "Anybody with and Opinion Category...lol! Cutting to the chase, I would shop around and by the most Martin that I could with my $2400.00. Why? Because I like Martin guitars and have a long history with them. Are they better? No, not really...it's simply what I like. You mentioned C&W music...long Martin history with C&W artists! Also the Martin is one that should hold or increase in value (Gibson/Taylor too!) and some day you can hand it down to your son... Some of the Import guitars like Alvarez, Ibanez, and Takamine (others too, can't list all!) are outstanding guitars and are a really great value for the money...but they are imports and most will not have the collectability and desirability of high end American Instruments. Anyway...just some opinion from someone who loves to play....

You might could check with Line 6 and see if the amp heads that they have are removeable from the cabinet and rack mountable... I've often thought about doing the same...mount an amp and all my effects in one rack unit... (Old guy...lots of rack stuff accumulated over the years)

Re: LIVE PERFORMANCE AMPS (4 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Those are some great questions. I always wondered how they got sound out on venues like Woodstock. This days an artist can use a much smaller amp and then simply mic it into the sound system... I bet it was a real challenge daisy chaining all those amps and speakers togather and dealing with the tubes and stuff. Tube amps are great but I remember the old ones humming and tubes constantly going out.

Re: High action on Guitar (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Yes, a high action can make your guitar harder to play but can often be corrected. I don't know if your guitar has an adjustable truss rod but you might really benefit by taking it to a shop and having it properly set up and adjusted. A more expensive guitar can have the same problems but should be properly set up to start with and have higher standards of construction, wood materials, tuning hardware, etc.. all that should add up to (but not always) better sound and easier playability.
