Welcome to the forum Tonyespo!  I picked up the guitar in the end of August 2009 ... I found Chordie within my first few days.  Clearly, you know you'll get a lot of value from this site... everyone here is AWESOME, and we're like a little family.  I started with my husband's steel string and after a few weeks of practicing he saw I had some potential... our anniversary came and he bought me  the nylon string (classical) guitar that I picked out in the store.  I will say... those steel strings HURT my fingers... but I did build up callouses very very fast.  Now that I've been playing my classical a while, I still have callouses.. BUT I can feel thru them (they are not HUGE callouses like I was getting with the steel).  Now... I'd say offhand that nylon is easier... BUT, I've picked up a few steel strings that were really nice and easy to play.  So in my opinion, the cheaper the steel string guitar the harder it might be to fret.. but you CAN DO IT!  It does come down to action, strings, fret height, etc... but if I could do it on a crappy wal-mart bought guitar with soft girlie hands, I'm sure you can with some practice.  smile

What all the guys said is true of course.  Grab those two chords and just practice going back and forth.  You will eventually get faster and more accurate as you continue to practice!  Also... for starting out, I highly suggest checking out www.justinguitar.com - it's a free video tutorial site that will lead you through the beginnings, beginner chords, and practice exercises (including finger stretching... which I think was helpful for me in the beginning).  He's got a ton of advanced stuff on there too, but absolutely led me thru the beginnings of picking up the guitar in a way that other's could not.  Of course you can donate if you like, but everything is free with no need to give out your contact info.

Good luck... and soon you will be giving out advise too!  smile

Just beautiful Ark!  You know, I use some "zen meditation" music in my salon when I am giving facials and body wraps (very relaxing, close your eyes services) ... and I haven't come across anything yet that I truly love... now THIS is perfect.  How many like this do you have... relaxing and restful music?

Old Doll... that was fantastic to listen to... ahhh... so soulful and relaxing and wonderful!  Thank you!

Wayne, although you weren't happy with it, I truly was!  It's taking a bit of work to get it just right, but I do think that this is nice for this song rather than the slap.  It gives that hint of a beat without being too "pop" sounding.  I don't want it to sound too fugees like... but I want that little bit of a beat.  I'm liking it ... I'm liking it a LOT!  Thank you again!

I will have to do some experimenting with the actual slap tho too... especially after listening to this from Old Doll... it's so inspirational.  I continue to be amazed at what can be done with the guitar... even when I don't know very many chords, notes, or theory!  smile  Guitar... my lifelong adventure!

I haven't used ebay in a while, but I was selling a lot of stuff on there at one point... and bought some stuff too of course!  I generally would bid a very small amount... let others think they were winning it, then on the last day bid my full amount and leave it be until it was over... not even look at it till it was done.  I didn't want to get into a bidding war and spend more than I really wanted to!  I'd just let ebay up it automatically for me.  So, for that reason, I would not bid at the last second.  Like Zurf, I think sometimes the last second bids don't get in too.  That's a big part of ebay and the bidding... it turns into a test of "winning" and people spend a bit more than they really want to, cuz it's not just about the item in the end.  LOL!

I do also like paypal.  I was a little annoyed when ebay and paypal became ONE... but... I still use paypal even tho I'm not using ebay all the time.  Like google... it's still a good company IMO.  I've used paypal to accept money on my websites and to send money to people that are out of town, on occasion, when a check will take too long.  I have a credit card machine (merchant account) for my business... but accepting money thru paypal online for gift certificates is still easier (and cheaper) than implementing a secure webpage online to accept their credit card info.

I think that you also did this incredibly ... thank you for sharing this with us.  I did have to search around to find one of Neil Youngs that wasn't blocked by NBC!

Thank you for sharing that with us Cam.  His video is very well done... I hope the film is of the same quality... I'm interested in seeing it after watching this!

Wayne, that is pretty awesome... can't wait to hear it!  It gives me an idea of how to get around my issues of playing my guitar with the kids around (they always try to hijack my guitar)... pots and pans and let them be the drummers.  THANK YOU!  Hmmm... if they like that, maybe I'll have the hubster make them a Wackadoo!

Wayne... thank you VERY MUCH!  You have no idea how much your video helped me!  I do not know why, but I just could NOT get it, until I watched your video.  You really have a good way of explaining things!  Now, of course I'm going to have to practice the heck out of that before I can do it well, but at least I "get it" now!  smile YAY!

Yes, that video you posted, I saw him.  That was kinda where I was starting from, but then waned a little bit more of the sound that the girl was doing with the palm muting/chop picking.  I'm playing with both now.

Sounds good Pix and Wayne!  You guys are the best!

Zurf... yep... I think that's about how Dad sounded, although he always preferred VO, and I prefer Jack ... of course, I haven't worked on this while drinking yet... but do you think the VO will make the difference?  LOL!  I'd say I'll try it tonight with a few drinks, but the hubby and I are heading out to listen to this band:  http://www.fabulousripcords.com/  -- my hubster works with one of the guys, and it's at a VERY popular downtown place (Dinosaur BBQ) which I have actually never been to.  Sooo... the drinks with the song will have to wait a bit.  tongue

Hey Pix... any update on a video with a little tutorial on slaps, beats, muted strums etc?  I did listen a little and found a few of the songs you've done with some of those slaps... I'd love to see more!  Thanks!!!  smile

Wayne... I just can't seem to get to what she is doing in that video.  I think the palm muting in general has me a little baffled... at least to make it fluid along with strums.  And then the chop thingie...wow.  I've been working on the song however with picking out the verses and slapping w/ chords during the chorus... but just using my pick mostly for the slap so it's not TOO snappy sounding.

I listened over and over to different versions of this song.  The original is very pretty... BUT... I learned it from my Dad playing and singing it, so to me the song should be a little "stronger"; not so light and airy... but then I also don't like the "rap" type sound of the Fugees but I do like the beat in there.  So... I guess I'm trying to find an even ground to make it my own!  smile

Thanks for the picture Doll!  It's already changed quite a bit since I had it just a few people ago (and quite a few miles!).  Topdown, thank you again for this fantastic project!

Well... I hope you didn't just get up and tell us about this and leave it at that... you did play a little right?  Next time I get up too early I think I might try to use that time wisely for guitar since I don't get enough time during my "supposed to be awake" hours!

Those are strange indeed... I kinda like the idea of a cool looking sculpted headstock tho... that wouldn't cut down on the playability!

Congrats on the Yari Pix!  I hope you guys can get together!  I am jealous that you all live close enough to be able to meet! smile

Cam... I don't know a whole lot of guys that would spend their days and nights at their Mother IN LAW's side.  I had to re-read that a few times to be clear that this wasn't your own mother.  You are clearly one of the good ones and your family is very lucky to have you in it.  I think a lot about the differences of knowing that someone is on their last days.  You have a chance to say everything you might want ... but you're also spending your days waiting for the inevitable which is also so very heart wrenching.  When I think of those who have passed too young, my daughter comes to mind and I envision a beautiful place with her enjoying one more grandparent to take care of her (as she only has one up there with her now).  My heart hurts a little thinking of what you all are going through.  A little prayer... and please remember to take care of yourself too, a couple hours of music can be so good for the soul!

hmmm... I guess when you're reading and not seeing a chord chart in front of you, things can get confusing.  BUT... I just learned something... I did NOT know about the little number Zurf!  Of course, I also haven't played anything more than some basic open chords too.

Sooo... from a newbie perspective.  Here's the link to the chord chart here on chordie:  http://www.chordie.com/chords.php  You can get to it at any time by clicking the "resources" tab at the top of any page on Chordie and then clicking on Chord Chart.  Once you're in this chart, you can click on any chord to bring you to alternate ways of playing that particular chord.  That is one start.  Another good start is www.justinguitar.com - In his beginner lessons he goes through chords and shows you the chord chart and the fingering.  I found it very useful to watch this and learn by his video teaching.

Now, just to reiterate what Zurf is saying with an actual picture included... Here is a D chord (a very common beginner chord):
http://www.chordimages.com/ramimages/i2/Dchord_NN0232_1.png

So in this picture (as Zurf said) the vertical line on the far left is your Low E (the 6th string and the thickest string)... the vertical line on the far right is your High E (the 1st string and the thinnest string).  The upper most horizontal line represents the nut (apparently if there's a number next to the chord as Zurf was describing, then this line represents that fret instead of representing the nut) and each line below represents a fret.  SO... In the D chord:  There are XX above the 6th and 5th strings ... so you will not play these.  There is a O above the 4th string so you will play this string open.  The 3rd string shows a dot on the second fret, the 2nd string has a dot on the 3rd fret, and the 1st string has a dot on the 2nd fret.  In tab, this would look like XX0232

Hope this helps a bit... and again... check out www.justinguitar.com and go thru his beginner videos... for people that need to SEE things in action and not just read it (I AM one of those people)... his FREE tutorial is PRICELESS (and if you so desire you can donate to him... but there's not requirement or signing up necessary... it's free).  Good luck!

OH... and it's not a dumb question at all.  I just started playing at the end of this past summer... before that time, I had no clue that the high string was tuned to E, I would have never guessed it was considered the 1st string... and I didn't know that guitars had nuts (I thought they were all girls!  hmmmph).  Everyone has to start somewhere, you aren't born knowing how to read a chord chart.

OH now Zurf... you can't be worse than me and I've youtubed!  smile (laughing at myself) -- Wayne is right, there are people that can't play at all... and there's people like me that will forever be behind you in their playing (I'm being realistic here... I don't expect to catch up to you any time soon.  I know I've never heard you, but I'm sure you're gooder than I).

Anyhow... good to hear that you're starting a new chapter in your playing.  I think that's awesome!  Now, what we need is a guitar players babysitting co-op ... you take the kids (AND the husband) one day while I practice ... and I'll take the kids (AND the wife) another day while you practice... then we'd both be getting much better faster with actual time to play and practice!  Ahhh... too bad we're not close enough to actually do that.  I know that's what I need even more than someone to practice and jam with!  smile

Well... once the weather warms up and the kids can play outside again I'll be able to practice more.  Winter winter go away

My goodness Wayne, that's an oldie!  smile  My husband talks about Sturgis a LOT from his younger days.  He says it's far better than any bike week in the south east.  He was stationed in California and rode to Sturgis with a pretty bad group one year that tried pretty hard to get him to join up.  He never did join a group... myself... I've never even sat on a bike let alone one that was moving!  I expect once the kids get a bit bigger he'll get his bike going that's been sitting in the garage for a bit and we'll be taking some type of trip towards the west!  Your more current pic shows how much you appreciate comfort... that looks like the type of bike for me! smile

Just thought I'd let you know that I asked a question about this too... different question.. but you might find this thread interesting:
http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=14025

Sorry you haven't gotten an answer to your actual question yet "difference between bass and acoustic slap" ... wish I had an answer for ya!  In the mean time, I have looked up a LOT about slap strumming ... and seen a LOT of different ways to go about this.  Absolutely query youtube for slap strum and then sit back and be ready to watch some stuff.  Everything from palm muting, slapping the bass strings with your thumb or pick, to slapping the strings up higher on the neck to get notes, and then there's even tapping on the body of the guitar itself.  GOOD LUCK!

Welcome to the forum gabriel999 -- yeah, it's been discussed a lot.  I guess the best answer to that which I've found is because everyone plays differently.  The reason you don't find strumming patterns with the chords here on this site is because Chordie actually works like a search engine pulling the tabs and chords from different websites... so when you find lyrics and chords here, they were not created by any one person or persons directly FOR this site... they are found all over the web on different sites... searched and indexed here to be easy to get to all in one place.  If you have questions about strum patterns for specific songs however, the people that visit this forum are really fantastic, and if you ask, they will likely take a listen to the songs on youtube and let you know what they would use as a pattern to get the same... or similar... result!  smile

so... it causes the strings to not ring out so much, depending on how much muting you do?  I think I get it... I'll try that tonight too!  THANKS!

good to know Pix... I'll have to have a listen at some more of your stuff... yeah, some different ways to get different sounds would be AWESOME!  The mulit-keyed snare drum thing sound very interesting!

I did play it a bit more... and kinda like the stum pick for verses... and the slap (w/ pick - not so loud) strums with the chorus... soon, very soon I'll have it close to how I want it (enough for the tube anyhow... probably never "perfect" in my mind tho)
