Thanks Roger... I noticed it seemed rather quiet around here lately w/o the Doc...

Get better soon Doc, look forward to seeing you back on the boards

Welcome to the forum!  It does take a while to get used to the callouses on your fingertips, and since you picked up the acoustic they're probably getting tougher than they were with just the electric... playing with two very different guitars that early on can cause some other issues too I would expect.  I'm thinking maybe it's not since you started using fingers instead of the pick, but maybe since you got the acoustic!  A steel string acoustic IS going to be harder on your fingers than an electric.  Often you need to push down on the frets harder to not get dead strings, and the strum is different as well (making strings ring out vs. getting the pickups to hear the string ring)!  Maybe just pick one for now until you feel more comfortable.  Then pick the other back up.  Working with two different guitars that are two completely different playing styles this early in the game would have messed me up for sure!

Of course, that' just my two cents based on the guitars sitting around this house... your guitars could be different and that might not be it at all.  GOOD LUCK and stick with it... one way or another and sooner or later, if you keep on, you'll get it!

Or gal?  I agree Joe... I have a bunch of songs in my folder that I like to work on, and yet once in a while I like to go back to that first song with three beginner chords and practice on just hitting those strings right, fretting clean, and keeping the familiar rhythm.  That first song isn't much, but to me it's become my foundation for everything and continues to help my playing get better.  Thanks, well written!

Welcome to Chordie njdoxie!  I have been playing for almost 6 months, so I'm still new myself.  As an excellent typist (near 88 wpm - and now everyone knows why I'm always so long winded on the boards, female and can type fast!), I know that I can type faster without thinking about the exact letters I'm typing... my fingers just "know" where to go.  Eventually with the guitar your fingers will do the same thing.  There's no "home base" that I know of for guitar, but on many guitars there is a dot on the 5th, 7th, and 9th frets (there's more, I'm not sure off the top of my head however).  That is a visual marker to keep from having to count down the fret board similar to the physical dots on the keyboard.  Sometimes the dot is on the side of the neck, so when you're holding the guitar the dots are facing up at you to see easily without having to bend around to see the fretboard.  I think that the dots in that location are more likely to be seen on a guitar truly designed for beginners.

As for online training, I personally really like justinguitar.com - Look through his beginner courses.  He tends to use an electric and a pick in those.  Even though I use a classical and my fingers or a thumbpick, I didn't have any problem following along in the beginning with him.  Of course, he's just teaching the open chords there also!  For the VERY beginning, I don't think it much matters what the instructor is using as it's all about fretting the chords and practicing those changes, but yes he does show you how to hold a pick properly and to strum with one!  Of course, if you're going to pay for lessons... you'd better be doing the practice that your teacher suggests too!  smile

Good Luck!

Guys, I just put my first seven songs into a public songbook so it's here if that helps.  You can save the songbook (import songbook) so you have it when you're online rather than having to click the links from the email, plus there's a couple more than what I sent in email:  http://www.chordie.com/publicbooks.php? … gid=269030

That's not the lyrical version of Tom Dooley I used, also it didn't save my transpositions in the public song book.  Do "Tom Dooley" with D, A7 (-5 semitones) and "You are my sunshine" A7, D, D7, G (-2 semitones)

Russell you amaze me.  Never in my life did I think I'd hear "lullaby on broadway" on guitar!  There are a lot of songs that I LOVE that are "piano" songs but I've found chords for them and try to play them on my guitar... it's different for sure, but it works!  Isn't music such an amazing canvas to work with?!!!!!  Good job Russell!  Thank you!

Looked it up... it is "OF" not "ON" ... my bad, you were right!  Can't wait to hear "Over the Rainbow"!  A fav for sure!

Welcome to the forum Steve!  I will gladly forward along that email to you that I sent to Tony!  BTW... my husband and I went and saw an AWESOME local band recently and one of the lead guitarists (as well as vocalist) was playing all night long - left handed on right handed guitars!  It was pretty wild to watch him... not only was he fretting those chords upside down all night, but he was actually strumming upside down too (where I would downstrum, he was upstrumming) ... and he held his pick "funny" to make up for everything being "upside down" as well.  It was pretty awesome to watch!  GOOD LUCK!  I know there is at least ONE regular poster here on the forum that does this... so if you want help there, make up a thread and see what kind of response you get!

Well, I'm planning on sending my eldest and my girlfriend to NYC for a weekend as part of Christmas, so if you could have him draw up a representative Circle of 5ths, I may make the trip. too.  smile

AHHH!  I never came back here till today to see this!  Darn... would have been awesome to meet a fellow Chordian, alas we're a 5 hour drive from NYC anyhow.  I do think I'm going to get him to draw one up however, as I think it would be an AWESOME tattoo as well.  Very deep.  I will have to work on it a bit however, as I don't think he comprehends it yet and I tend to get REALLY picky about things being proper.  He had a customer come in that wanted a neat tattoo of a music staff with notes running down her side.  I looked at what he drew up and picked it apart from a technical music standpoint and INSISTED that he ask her if there was a song in particular or notes that she wanted rather than just some mumbo jumbo "pretty" looking thing on her side.  Sure enough, she was above and beyond pleased that "he" even thought of that, and she ended up with some notes to a song that had meaning to her, as well as a cool looking tattoo!

BTW... I'm FINALLY starting to get Music Theory and the circle of fifths!  YAY!  Thank you again guys for your explanations!

Good to hear the paint fumes didn't consume you.  Interesting note I have to make here.  I have no sense of smell and paint fumes have NEVER affected me (nor has acrylic nail fumes, permanent wave solution or many of the other fumes that really disturb people).  I find that really interesting.  Although I know the fumes can mess with your oxygen intake in your blood and all that... without being able to actually smell them, they've never bothered me.  Of course, I've never been in a SUPER airtight room while painting... but there's been a few times when my husband and I had been working on painting the same room and he had to walk out while I was unaffected.  (for safety, I left the room too just in case... but always thought this was rather strange).

Agreed... and from a more newbie standpoint as well.  If my husband's cheap guitar had been set up (at all) when I picked it up those first few weeks, I probably wouldn't have felt so frustrated, would have been able to practice a little longer at each sitting, and wouldn't have felt the need to run out and buy a brand new guitar after a few weeks because I just could NOT continue to play his.  Had I not been so determined to carry on the "family" guitar playing, I would have quit.  Had I not bought my new guitar and had to continue with his, I would have quit.  Now that I've been playing for several months... I still can't really play his (he has set it up now somewhat, and it's better, but it's not a Pix set up smile).  I've picked up steel strings in the guitar stores that I CAN play. So I know it's not the steel, it's the set up.  I say GO FOR IT while you keep on practicing!  Worst thing that could happen is you wreck it and go grab another $100 guitar... but that won't happen with Pix on your side!  big_smile

Cam, I am sorry for your loss.  There aren't a whole lot of words that will ever work right in this type of situation.  I think Old Doll has some really good ones there however.  You are indeed a good man to have been there for her... and especially for your wife during this time.  Thank you for sharing the update with us.  My prayers go out to your family.

naolslager, I added a "how to" help topic to the forum.  topdown's directions are great, there's just a little more hand holding detail in my post if that helps... it can now be found here:  http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic. … 535#p88535

A lot of people are new to posting pictures on forums.  Many have explained how to do it before, but I thought maybe if it had it's own topic people may be able to find the directions easier and next time someone's looking for a "how to" you can just direct them to this thread.

First and foremost, in order to post a picture on the forum your photo must be hosted somewhere online.  There are tons of locations that you can upload your picture and many are free.  Some of these include:

photobucket
flickr
picasa web albums from google
-- a lot of internet companies give you free space for uploading your photos --
myspace
facebook

If you click below the post box on any of the links you will come to this page Forum help topics which will tell you how to do some basic stuff on this forum and others.  To collect the proper url for an image so you can post it in between the img tags and it will show up in the forums...

So first, your picture must be uploaded online.  Next, find the photo you like and right click on the photo to copy image url (website address)
a. if you're using google chrome :  select "copy image url"
b. if you're using internet explorer : after you right click on the picture select "properties" and a box will open up.  Look to the right of where it says address and highlight that entire thing, next while holding down the "ctrl" button on your keyboard hit the "c" button
c. if you're using mozilla firefox:  after you right click on the picture select "copy image location"
d.  if anyone has answers for detailed how-to for safari or opera go ahead and reply to this thread and I'll update this starting post with the info... I don't have these on my pc

-- Paste image url
come back here and reply to the topic of your choice, in the message box where you type, type the img tag (see below), then holding down "ctrl" hit the "v" button on your keyboard to paste the url into place then end the tag (as seen below).

It will look something like this:

Hint:  choose "post reply" rather than typing in the "quick post" field, then you will be able to click "preview" to see your post and see if your picture shows up before clicking "submit".

Here's an example of my daughter and I with guitar:

Pretty fun there Cam!  That fake head is a "barber maniquin" ... used for practicing barbering on.  I have several around here w/o the beard - female heads - for practicing hair cutting/styling etc.  At one time I put them up in my dining room at eye height so when you opened the door up they were "starting at you" ... they made quite a few people jump a little (including my teenage son), surprised to find other "people" in my dining room when they didn't think anyone else was here.  Some of my gilfriends like to use their "heads" as halloween props!  This was funny... very good, and I can totally see how I would jump if it was me in that bed!  LMAO!

Ark... if you could make up an hour worth of music like this one, "Spanish Sunset" and "Tree of a Thousand Stars" ... I'd gladly pay a standard CD price for it ... in fact, I'd be interested in encouraging my clients to purchase the cd as well!  I don't have a ton of customers... but a few that appreciate relaxation (and I do know some people that pop to mind that might enjoy this, another professional friend of mine).  During the last relaxing treatment I gave (a body wrap that takes about 90 minutes) I ran pandora with the station "zen relaxation" ... the one thing that I HATE about that is just as everything is going along great, some odd sounds come up in the middle of a song.  A rattling, or a horn at a strange pitch starting low and coming to a crescendo.  I've encountered it tons of times while listening to similar music and I personally find that it tends to break concentration.  When I'm doing a service like that, I like to be calm and relaxed as well as my client... and if it unnerves me I can only imagine what it does to them as they're starting to drift off to sleep!  These three songs of yours are all very fluid and relaxing all the way through.  THAT is what I'm looking for (I can't be bothered with listening to an entire cd and having to exclude certain songs!).

Let me know what you think... I'll bet some of Old Doll's friends would be interested as well... considering your fame and all!  smile  If not, that's alright... again... FANTASTIC JOB!

That's pretty good!  It's probably not true, but a good one for sure!  smile

Wowie... that's pretty awesome Pix!  Keep us updated!  LOVE the pictures!

when you go to a chain store the same cast of characters are always there and they never buy anything..ever. I've sat for an hour waiting to try a particular guitar that a salesman recommended only to be thwarted by the semi-pro doing his acoustic debut concert for free in the jam room!!!!!

Not only that... but they pull up a chair in a large corner of the room so that you can't even GET to half the guitars in the room.  Grrrrrr!

There's a shop around here that watches people like a hawk, you MUST ask to see any of their guitars but they will let you and then leave you be a little... but I do feel like a little kid having to ask pretty please if I could possibly touch the guitar... I don't blame em tho... it's a small shop w/o much room and not in the best of areas with a pawn shop next door.  I wouldn't go into a shop that would be so snooty to not allow me to touch the guitar even if I asked nice the way my daddy taught me, "Please sir, may I?  PLEASE?????".
