In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

And then he closed the thread.  Marcalan... I highly suggest you just talk with us about what's up instead of pushing it, throwing things out there with little meaning with the "Primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion" ...

sooo.... what is the topic here that you'd like to actually discuss?  You've got free speech... so speak it, or be done with the odd comments just trying to see what people will say.  The random comments here and there simply are that of a troll.

Good to see ya Seslo... sit down at the end of the bar and have a beer as the theme song continues playing... I too was thinking "Cheers" ... hey... at least you know you're always welcome to just jump right in where ever when ever and most will still be here posting with ya (unless of course they are MIA too... there's been a bit of that lately, you're not the only one)!  I hope all is well with your family, work, home and all that good stuff!  smile

welcome to the forum CosmicFred... the songs on Chordie are basically found elsewhere on the internet then converted to an easy to read format.  If you post a request for song chords in the appropriate section you might get a response on where to find them on the web... in the mean time, if you do find them... go here:  http://www.chordie.com/addurl.php  and enter the url where the chords were found and at sometime in the future that song will be indexed and added to the chordie search.  smile

I LOVE "Second Substitute"!  Oh my goodness... you could easily stand in for Elton John Phill!  Fantastic singing!

Oh... I found it ... here's the link to Phill's music/words ... (sorry, I'm a little anal about bringing everything together to make it easier to find!  smile)

And there's my answer to another question on the forum re: Hendrix Grip ... thanks DM!

Personally... I have double jointed thumbs... but to the point that they are WEAK double joints (go figure, the thumb on my fretting hand is worse than the one on my strumming hand).  I played the clarinet for a few years as a child and gave it up because the weight of the clarinet resting on my thumb (again, my "bad" thumb) was painful as my thumb would slip out of joint while the clarinet was resting on it.  Ouch.

I find that my Classical style guitar fits well in my hands and if I try to place my thumb where it "should" be... it pops out and is very uncomfortable causing pain if I push it too much.  Conversely, the neck on my husband's electric is too thin and it doesn't seem to matter how I hold on to it or where I put my thumb, it just hurts (of course, this could have to do with the weight of it too?).  I assume everyone is different with how/where they can hold the guitar to ease the strain placed on their hands.  I also have the beginnings of carpel tunnel and was concerned... but guitar playing doesn't affect me at all (knock on wood)... where typing really does a number on me if I do too much.

sooooo.... try holding on to the neck differently... try it "wrong" ... try that Hendrix grip... and try taking a break with some "easier" chords when it starts to hurt!  smile  Maybe take a trip to the guitar store and try out a few different neck styles and see if there's one that fits in your hands better... you've been at it for over a year, maybe it's time for a New Guitar Day!  smile

Jim I'm glad you were able to get things to work for you.  Well... you do KNOW that Chordie is safe... so... you could use internet explorer JUST for Chordie at home... well... when you're printing songs that is... there are outside links within the forum that you may be at risk occasionally by clicking.  At least that's a decent work around for you that's not TOO difficult!  I guess you'll just have to get back to work at work and leave the printing for home!  smile

Maybe a new post targeted to MAC users about the printing issue at work will yield results for you?  I don't know a darn thing about them... and that is really strange that you could get into the settings, but they wouldn't work!  I wonder if changing the default settings on that printer to 8.5X11 would make a difference (rather than just for that particular print job).

Ohhhh.... I had a whole reply for this that was rather amusing... alas, I've decided it's bound to tick someone off... so I will leave it out!  smile  Good for you DM for being SOOOOO patient with the "pushies" (pushies - people that insist you must do them a favor THEIR way).

Hendrix grip... hmmm... I might have to do a little reading about this.  Do you have any info?  Links online?  No doubt when I do a google search I'll find a ton of info... anything that's EASIER will make me happy!  smile

Awesome advise guys!  I don't think I can add much to it...  Humming along so you're concentrating on the strumming is an excellent one.... doing a song you already know really REALLY well is another excellent one (you know the words, you know how the words fit in the music... so concentration is only on the music!)... and SLOW IT DOWN a LOT so that you can do the strums and singing together.  Those are my favorites of the above (although... they are all good advice!).

Other than that... I guess maybe try an even more simple strum pattern.  I ALWAYS start by just doing one or two strums with the words so I know WHERE the chord changes go (a song I know the words to really well) then work in a super simple pattern (the pattern I showed you in the video to the song Leaving on a Jet Plane... that's my "starter pattern" to just about every song)... THEN when I can do that and sing, I listen on youtube and find a strum pattern that I think will actually work with that particular song to sound "right", at least to me!  The link Wayne put up actually breaks the song down and does JUST THIS!  smile

One more comment... "Base, down/up" sounds like three beats... "most" songs (not all) are four beats to a measure (aka 4/4 time).  Of course, this depends on what song you're doing and how you're doing this strum pattern... but *maybe* you need another strum in there?  Base, down/up/down to keep yourself on track and not lose it while adding the singing?????

Of course... practice, practice, practice ... "Rome wasn't built in a day!"  OR... as Zurf likes my quote... have a beer first!  smile  LOL!

I'm with NELA... my 5 year old has her own guitar... it's a TINY little guitar (I am going to HAVE to post pics)!  It actually has steel strings on it and I have considered switching her to nylon, but frankly she isn't interested in learning how to fret any chords.  She just bangs away on it and "pretends" to fret it because she sees me doing it.  She makes up her own songs to go along with the horrid sounds that come out of that thing, but she's having fun.  I'm not about to stop her or insist that she try to play it "right".  My son is 14 and has had an acoustic for a good 5 years or so now.  He finally got interested and attempted to learn something when he saw me pick up a guitar and actually play.  He now has an electric that I bought him for Christmas and is working on learning.  I can play chords and switch between them fairly well and strum out a pattern.  He on the other hand is like "all teenagers" and wants to play lead.  He's learning his notes up and down the neck and can pick out some leads.  I try to work with him on the circle of fifths and strumming patterns, he tries to show me different notes on the neck.  Find out what they like and encourage whatever that is.  Keep it fun and wait until they are ready.  My dad tried for many years to get me to play... I wasn't ready until I was 33!  smile

Jim, totally understandable that your computer guy doesn't like internet explorer.  Sadly... it's so common in use that the hackers have preyed on it more than any other browser out there.  If you want to, you can download Mozilla Firefox from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html

I personally use Google chrome for most of my surfing as I had problems with firefox in the past (although I do have firefox on my computer... I really should try using it more as clearly a LOT of other people are using it and not having problems with it... maybe my original installation was just no good and I'm biased against it for bad reasons).  There is no easy way to get to printer settings in chrome either.

You are welcome Jim.  I hope that you have luck with the work around(s) I suggested.  I'm not a computer guru or anything... I just like to think outside the box sometimes!  smile There IS at least one computer guru on the site however that I know of, so if you need other help just ask.  It's amazing the help you can find from the members on Chordie sometimes!  The songbook software is pretty basic in looks... but it sure can come in handy if you have a lot of songs that you want to organize (and EDIT!  whoo hoo)  in ways that you just can't quite do with the songbook feature on Chordie.  Feel free to email me if you need more help!

I hadn't seen them before... but then, I haven't printed out any songs in a while either as I already have some I've been working on.  Ahhh... maybe he didn't just update.  sad  Oh well, either way... pretty cool that it's linking directly with songsterr now.  Chordie is quickly turning into far more than "just a resource" website and I for one, like it!  I do wish a little note was made to let people know when new things were added or changed.  Per oh Per, wise man you are who has created such a wonderful site... if you could email me when you make updates to the site I would gladly post updates on the forum to notify everyone else!  smile  Anything I can do to help?

Jim...The suggestions from Topdown and Roger would be the ideal option.  I understand the frustration however if you can't get into your printer margin settings from the browser.  I have two other options for you... neither are "great" but they both should work.  I would have waited to see if their options worked first, but you did ask me to look at the thread specifically...so... here we go!

Do you have the SongBook software yet?  It's free... but it's worth whatever price they charge to register it if you wish.  You can find it here:  http://linkesoft.com/songbook/

So in Chordie from the song's page click on Chopro on the right (near the print button).  This gives you the formatting (computer language) that was used.  Chopro formatting is based on TEXT not pictures or tables ... so you have to do this the old fashioned way by putting spaces in if you can't get to printer margin settings (I don't see anywhere to set printer settings in this program either.  I was really hoping they'd be in there... but I don't see anything for margins.).  Copy the chopro formatting from chordie and paste it into SongBook (creating a new song).  Paste this in on the edit screen (from the edit tab in SongBook - tabs are at the bottom, edit and view)...

*before you go any further ... try printing this as is and see if you can get into your printer set up before continuing - while there's no "page setup" or "printer setup" feature in the file menu... sometimes just attempting to print will bring up some options for you it all depends on your printer*

now get your thumb ready, put spaces in before each line (you'll have to fiddle with this to find what will work right for your needs to get the words over far enough for the holes... maybe 7 spaces?).  Anyhow, once you've done this and go back into the View tab you will see all the words have been pushed over (well, technically they just have a bunch of spaces before them, but hey... you can hole punch thru space!).  This *should* print out well for you... but I'm not making a promise on that one.  Sometimes spaces print out funny in programs and I haven't tried printing songs out like this myself.  This is just my idea that might be a work around for you not being able to adjust printer margins.

On another note... you COULD just go into your printer settings on your own and change the default printer settings... THEN go to chordie and print the song out.  Just remember to change your default settings back when you're all done, or else everything you print will be done with those settings!  This would probably be the *easiest* way around the issue if you know how... but if you print songs haphazardly here and there then it could be a pain in the tush... plus, the SongBook software is kind of fun to play with and organize your songs on your computer... not just on Chordie!  smile

Good luck!  Let us know what worked... I am hoping that you can just access your settings from the browser the way the guys have suggested however!

Checking it out now Jim.  Sorry to hear that you haven't heard back from Per...  I will admit, I wish he was around in the forums a bit more.  I imagine this site is a hobby of his however... and I've run sites like that before... so I understand why he's not here too much.  It'd be nice to see him around tho!

Toney I am pleased to hear you found a way to make it through the song.  Distracting yourself is a great way to make it all the way through, and with your emotions in the back of your throat... I am sure they came through in your playing and singing in a way that shares your true feelings and expression.  While I've NEVER been in your shoes, I know there's times when I've strayed my eyes from one that would have helped me to "lose it" so that I I didn't.  Blessings again for Shawn's family... how nice to hear that Shawn Jr. is continuing with the music!  His father obviously did him well by instilling a love of it in him!  smile

Old Doll, that is an amazing gift your children have given you!  How fantastic!  I wish I had a houseboat to put you up at like Tuba!  As I'm only a five hour drive by car from NYC!  smile  Remember, not all Americans (or New Yorkers) are as cranky as those that live in NY City... that Hotel looks Amazing!  I am sure you will have a fantastic time in the heart of the Big Apple.  If I haven't been lucky enough to move to a slightly warmer climate before you come to the States, I may have to plan a little trip to visit you while you are here!
