I'm pretty close to Syracuse, everyone around here that watches is a HUGE Syracuse fan... I don't watch it at all! So... here's hoping the team you want to win does... for whatever it's worth! LOL!

You better get over fear of singing in front of others, because the longer you play guitar your family will start thinking hey she's not too bad. They will first ask you to play a few songs at a barbeque and then it will be a wedding. Then your friends will want you to play at some weird gigs. It's gonna happen
One of my weirdest,
My mother inlaw is a Norwegian and has a friend that is also and they have an annual Lefse making party. They also make homeade wine. I was asked to play while they had dinner and later made lefse. Alot of wine was consumed by all and my music went over too good.
My sister inlaw didn't know I could play so well and got a little too huggy and ended up having to get carried home. Lefse making is very messy with all the flour used and all the hugging ,I still had flour in the all hard to get places on my guitar for years
Lefse is Yummy
And if your audience drinks enuff Homebrew, "You Can Be A Star"
LOL! Good story Wayne! I did the voice lessons in high school... which came along with a LOT of short choir solos... solo singing competitions in front of judges... singing in a couple weddings (one of which I got paid a whopping $25 but that was a LOT for a 16 year old!)... pushes to do certain songs at Kareokie... and of it all I enjoyed singing "Opera" songs the best. I see what happens when my dad gets his guitar out at the campfire and I am prepared for the onslaught this coming summer because I know he's going to tell me to bring mine with me or hand me his after about 3 songs! I think I'll handle the campfires alright (as long as I also have a few beers in me) but I'm not so sure about playing during a Lefse making party! LOL! Thanks for the heads up and the encouragement!
...Which brings me back to American Idol. Give these kids enough of a false sense of superstardom before they have even played a live gig and they will NEVER be inspired to create a great piece of music.
That's just it! They fast track these kids into the false sense of superstardom and tell them what to do so they can make money (not the kids that is)... and if they're lucky they get a great deal that DOES fit with their voice and singing style... but more likely than not they just get run over by a train when all is said and done. They aren't inspired to create great music... they are inspired to do as they're told to win and pray for a record deal. It's sad. Gone are the days (yes, I'm too young to know the days I'm talking about but I've seen enough "good ole" movies about REAL stars to know) when you could walk into a producing studio and beg them to listen to your music and hope the liked YOUR music and actually become a star on your OWN merit and abilities!

Tony... glad to hear you're doing well! Tuba... congrats also on quitting! Kenny... 90% is nothing to scoff at! You'll get there soon!
The constant barrage of stories absolutely make me think... the one thing my Doctor said was this, "At this point, we know that smoking is not good for you. It's not a matter of IF you will have problems from smoking down the road... it's just a question of WHICH problem you will have. Keep smoking and that's one promise I can make you... you will have SOME effect from it"
I know I need to quit... I know I have little kids and that should be reason enough to quit. I'm a smart lady, I know all the reasons I should quit... I feel sometimes the barrage of reasons being slung at me makes me not want to quit... the kid in me fighting "authority"... and then, it seems every time I get serious about considering quitting, some other huge stresser comes into my life and I don't "feel" like I can handle that and quitting at the same time. Some might call that an excuse, however it is my mind set. As soon as I figure out how to get past holding myself back, it will get done. Hopefully it'll be before I have any major health issues. UGH!

Re: nut width (10 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Tony... for starters, I'd say that's half the reason I chose my classical... the wider neck (and I have "average" female hands)! While I had this, my husband also commented how much he liked the wider neck as well (I'd set it down to grab a drink and have a hard time getting it out of his hands again while his was still sitting in it's case!). Since then... I bought the two electrics for him and my son... now the electrics have a thinner neck but are very easy to fret (of course, because they are electric). They love those but both would prefer my classical still to their entry level acoustics. I have a HORRID time playing their electrics... easy to fret, YES... but necks so thin that I have a hard time getting my (double jointed) thumb in a good spot. Absolutely have a fun time at the guitar shops when you have a chance again... necks can be sooo different... finding one that fits your hands well AND is easy to fret is the key! I picked up a few steel strings last time I was there that felt even nicer in my hands than my classical... I will be getting a steel string the next time I'm buying (but I think I'll keep my first guitar as long as she'll last)!

Thank you!
Ark - Sometimes the bathroom seems like the only quiet place in the house... I was playing in there while my 2 1/2 yr old was taking a bath and decided to just record... so I sent her out to watch "Dora The Explorer" and just brought the camera in since I was already there! LOL!
Old Doll - Thank you... I posted in here, still hiding in the bathroom so to speak!
Tuba - I did put a little makeup on just for the camera... but my goodness, my hair wasn't even done! LMAO! Thank you.
I aspire to be capable of playing half as well as Wayne does!

I liked the show a few years ago... not so much now. I enjoy watching the beginning... when the judges have to see 200 people in a day and pick a couple to move on. It's good entertainment to see how horrible some people are that actually think they can sing. On another note, it's also sad to see how good some people are and they get booted off before they've really had a chance all because they're nervous. My husband says, "you're better than most of those people, you could do that!" ... I say... NOPE, I couldn't. I've sang a few times in front of people live, my knees knock and my throat closes up I do ok but not good "enough". After the beginning I watch a couple more rounds of it... seeing some that made it through that I thought were horrible (wondering why they made it and some of the others didn't, although I know it's just because they had a good story that makes for good TV and not much to do with their singing)... then I pretty much quit watching... it's usually about the time that they start getting told they need to step it up YET they have no way to do that just standing in the middle of a stage by themselves having been stripped of their guitar and half of their self esteem. It makes me think, "that's probably what it's like to be a famous singer with top 10 albums out... give up everything to do what the monsters at the top of the food chain think you should do to SELL albums"... no thanks. Towards the end of the show's season sometimes I watch again just to see who's left that they've been able to turn into a really good singer via the $$ and mold that they were able to fit into. This show reminds me why I'd rather sing in the bathroom than on stage! Simon is a jerk... but I guess it makes for "good tv" since the show is still running... just not good for me.

Holy Smokes PapaGuitar! Those are some big scary looking fish! Glad you were able to follow the directions to get the pic up! I've only seen some tiny Sturgeon specimens at the local hatchery... and heard stories of how you shouldn't wear shiny jewelry while swimming because the "giant sturgeon" will get you! LOL! I grew up lake fishing... nothing too exciting but VERY relaxing... and lots of fun times out late searching for night crawlers (and of course when that didn't work we'd just buy some... but we did have fun some times grabbing our own!). I honestly haven't been fishing in a long time... other than taking the kids to a little stream here or there and helping with their casting and changing lures and worms. Sounds like you all have a great time!

The only way to make the govt better....get rid of em all and let the people (NOT CORPORATIONS) vote em in for real!!Dm
I wholeheartedly agree. Too many cooks in the Kitchen ruin the soup! That's why I don't like politics.

Tony... I'm really glad those links helped! Subscribe to that guy's channel... he's constantly uploading how-to's for songs!
Zguitar... I subbed to his channel, but I actually don't watch him a lot. Of course... I only have a couple songs under my belt so far... but I've saved him for when I'm ready to learn a REALLY GOOD ONE!
Cam - you've got it right! If it wasn't for all the other great people here (like yourself) I wouldn't still be here helping another person out. It's amazing how so many great helpful people can congregate at once place here on Chordie!
Rubbersole- WELCOME TO CHORDIE! The first song I ever learned is like that... I played that thing to death. I'm sure I'll play it at a campfire this summer... but I am sick of it for sure!

Re: They are coming to take us away ha ha ... not so funny (7 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Honestly, the tabs and chords are not "complete arrangements"... so I don't understand why they are horribly upset about people sharing their versions ... if this was actual sheet music photocopied and shared that would be a different story (and I respect the copyrights in that respect). Well... I do hope that in the event of tabs and chords no longer capable of being shared, that Chordie's forum would stay open. I enjoy the connections and friends I've made here!
BTW... I completely agree with the above posters as well... my appreciation for different music has been spurred by fellow chordians, the music that is available, and has pushed me to also spend money on music that I wouldn't have otherwise bought... as well as purchasing things like song books (which are copyrighted and the original writers are getting their share from it!)

Thanks guys! You've got me blushing with all this "great voice" and "easy on the eyes" stuff! I did post in Wayne's thread rather than start my own to make sure that he gets lots of credit! If he hadn't suggested this song with my voice I probably wouldn't have ever tried it. Geo... I like your idea of a duet, but I don't know if a standard computer microphone or a junky old camera recording will hold up to Wayne's awesome little set up! I'm wondering what will be a better choice for future purchases... a new guitar... or some recording hardware... hmmmm.... perhaps I'd best start playing the lotto!

DM that's pretty awesome! Now... I know once I learn some scales and where the notes are along the neck, I'm going to try this before traditional bar chords! Thank you very much for sharing! Re: I'm needing help again. (25 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Tony, I think the BEST thing about guitar is that there is ALWAYS more to learn... sometimes it can be viewed as a hurdle, but if you look at it as an adventure and know that you will get over that hill and start looking forward to the next hill to get over (or hurdle)... that's when it really starts getting FUN! It's not too easy, and it's not too hard... you'll get it! You've got a bunch of good chords to work with... look how much you've learned already!
