Guitars and Bikes usually share a true commonality....

Most people start out with a guitar or bike that is MUCH MORE CAPABLE THAN THE PERSON WHO BUYS IT.

True dat. I also find that guitars and sailboats as well as campfires share a similar commonality.

My buddy John Reno played that one already. I had to come up with a tuba bass line to go with it. Everybody liked our duo version.

I was under a lot of pressure from my wife to learn "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World" by Israel Kmakawiwo'ole (May God rest his soul).   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I
I was transitioning from being a band singer to a single song guy act.
The simplicity of the arrangement and sweetness of the presentation appealed to me as much as it did to my wife.
It took me four or five weeks to finally clean this one up but the wondrous effect this song has on audiences made the effort well worth it. I opened with it at a beach restaraunt gig and every kid in the place came running and gathered around me. I wished I had another song as sweet to follow it up. My next song was "Under the Boardwalk" and the kids bailed on me.

You're absolutely right. Roger. I was addressing a general approach to most any song.
I do some recitations that involve putting the guitar line on "automatic" to free up the vocal line to speak in rhythms not in sync with the music.
Example - Dr. John's "How Come My Dog Don't Bark When YOU Come 'Round".
This means drilling the guitar line enough times to have it become second nature.

It's faster if you learn to play and sing a new song all together.
Work out the chords, write them in red above the lyric syllable where they hit. Then figure the phrasing of the lyrics - usually accents in lyrics occur where the chord changes. Mark extra accents as well.
Then start singing and strumming along with the video. Repeat as necessary.

The Eagles looked so sharp against Dallas they are due to let down in this next non-division game. I'm inclined to bet on the Bears.

Congratulations Topdown for making good on an opportunity offered by a fine and gracious gentleman like Toney.
You hung in there after a shaky start and made good things happen.
I am honored to have met both of you guys. Toney sees your potential Tops, and is willing to help all he can. You have the courage to take the ball and run with it.
I'm proud of both of you.

Ms. HannaBeth, if your thumb is effective on the fifth string, then use it.
I roll my thumb over the sixth string to make F and every chord above.
It is a practical alternative to a six string barre with your index finger and alleviates cramping in a long song ("Dock of the Bay" for example).
However as Zurf and Wlbaye advised, your pinky finger is often available  to help out on many chords. Using the pinky strengthens it and gives you some real help where all other fingers are commited.

This thing has been stuck in my mind for 2 days now! The grand kids love it. Thanks!(I think.)

Know what you mean, buddy.
If they love that, play "Wild Thang" (You make my heart sing) using your monster voice for them and get them to sing along. They'll go at that until your fingers fall off.

Football almost qualifies as a religion here in Alabama. Some folks around here take it so seriously they have themselves buried in Alabama or Auburn caskets with Alabama or Auburn headstones.
I played at several golf banquets where fans pay ten grand apiece to golf, eat and have pictures taken with heroes like Joe Namath, Bart Starr and Archie Manning.
This game may be a case of the irresistible force vs the immovable object. Don't know who's gonna win but we're gonna hear the hitting a block from the stadium.
Good on ya chordians,

Restored a 1916 house and a 1950's wooden sailboat. Both projects came out well.
I was honored to raise two kids and a now a grandson. I found it to be fun.
Love airplanes and motorcycles. Couldn't afford a plane but still ride motorcycles at my age 70.
