barre on 2nd fret

pinky on second string 5th fret

2rd finger on 3rd string 4th fret

when you add the 3rd finger to the 1st string 4th fret it  becomes an E chord using the "D Shape Barre chord

all rather difficult !

1. the wall
2. meddle
3. wish you were here

the wall was a great album but I listened to it so much when I was younger that the thought of ever listening to it again makes me wince

still listen to meddle and wish you were here though

if you ever get a chance to watch the last 20 minutes of crystal vogager do - its a film about surfing and the last 20 min is an extened photo shoot of reefs and surfing with echoes playing -it s a great piece of film.

thanks

I will try to post some more patterns (including some more recent songs). I hope that people reading these threads will pitch in with ideas and recollections of their own

strumming patterns are generally what people play when they want to capture the essence of song on a single guitar or just to bash out a tune  for fun. The original recording don't give much clue to an appropriate accompaniment so I hope that people will tell us how they play their favorite songs

It has to be said that punk rock does have a reputation for sloppy technique

However to be fair whilst some punk is a little primitive there are many punk guitarists with a great deal of skills -  especially in terms of rthym guitar

there is certainly an old legend that punk can all be played on three chords -the famous punk rock chords A D And E.  that is a bit a myth and to play punk well you will need to be able to play maj and minor barre chords.

the basic punk strum is downstrokes

1...&....2...&...3...&...4
V...V...V...V...V...V...V

This is usually embellished

For example here is a rythm pattern using mainly downstrokes

1...&...2....&...3....&...4....&...1...&.....2.....&....3...&....4...&

8........8....8...8....8....8.............................................
8........8....8...8....8....8........10..10...10.........12..12..12....
9........9....9...9....9....9........10..10...10.........12..12..12....
10......10..10..10..10..10.......10..10...10..... ...12..12..12...
10......10..10..10..10..10..8....8...8.....8....0....10..10..10...0
8........8....8...8....8....8....8...8....8....8.....0....10..10..10...0

Have a look at the Ramones doing their thing on an very early punk song

Another defining feature of  punk is  mixing open and damped chords.
you damp the sound of the barre chords by releasing the pressure  on the fret after playing

a common sequence is

A                  G
1...&...2...&...3...&...4.. &
V....... X...X.. V...... X...X

this is often used to add interest to a progression using downstrokes

People sometimes talk about strings being 10's or 9's or whatever

what does it mean

I use a hard pick but softer picks are more forgiving for beginners because they flex

309

(3 replies, posted in Electric)

or after playing a note release the pressure of the left hand fingers on the fret very slightly to damp off the ringing string

well done

don't understand

this could be the tab for second and third guitar. Lynard skynard had 3 guitarists and lots of the transcriptions have three guitar parts because the tracks are overdubbed

if its the extent of the tab it could be an instruction to repeat the sequence - if its part of a longer tab then may be not.

a common variation on the basic alternate strum is to play a quarter note on the first beat

instread of playing the first upstrum pass your picking hand over the strings without touching them

1...&...2...&... 3...&...4..&...
V. ......V...n...V...n...V...&...

Try this with

Blowin' in the Wind - Bob Dylan

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sUz2OulZ-q4

finally you can achieve a very different effect by playing two chords in one measure

for example "freebird" by Lynard Skynard

G...................D................Em.................................
1...&...2...&... 3...&...4..&...1...&...2...&... 3...&...4..&...
V. ......V...n...V...n...V...&...V. ......V...n...V...n...V...&..

........ if I...... leave here...to-morrow

of course lynard skynard had seven band members including three guitarists but if i was asked to play free bird on lone acoustic this is how i would approach the main chords progression

This is the strum used by Credence  Clearwater Revival on Proud Mary

Rape me my friend

sparse strumming (try 2 downbeats per chord)

try powerchords

and then - find a more uplifting song

that depends on your budget - and the guitar and amp in the pack

it is reasonable for a beginner to set a fairly modest budget and in those circumstances a pack might be a good idea.
