Yes, I'm thinking either upgrade the soundcard or go with the the Zoom H2, I looked at that as well.  I'm weighing in on the $$ part of it, but also considering the output sound that I'm going to hear on the computer.  I do already have audacity installed and have attempted recording with just the basic computer mic... too much hissing and background noise where I can take my camera into the bathroom (LOL)... so we shall see!  Just thought I'd get some opinions on computer hardware and ideas about recording interfaces vs. the H2 cuz I think down the road I'm going to wish I'd have upgraded the card to begin with.  Decisions, decisions!

Ha ha... Casey makes me smile.  Well... I must say, the recording sounds of a very good quality!  Good job, and lucky you Toots (for having such a ham of a grandson and a friend to set you up some nice recording studios!).

So, I've been doing a little research because I wanted to get "something" that would record a little better than my junky camera on video mode... or my computer microphone.  So here's what I found from my reading... it seems useless to bother getting a good mic and an audio interface if you have a cruddy sound card (which I do have a cruddy soundcard) as the soundcard will resample the audio at a slow rate.  Or is this information not entirely correct?  Is that slow rate that it resamples "sufficient" for someone just recording for their own personal use and youtube?  I glanced around a little, and you can actually buy soundcards that have xlr inputs and phantom power...

obviously you're going to get a better sound going in AND coming out than if you stick with the original soundcard and add a recording interface... but is it worth the $$ because I will then also HAVE to get better speakers -- I'm starting to think it is... but then, I'm also starting to wonder if I should take it that far since all I really want is something a "little" better than what I currently have!  LOL!

So all you guys with your recording setups... did you go with your basic factory supplied sound card or did you upgrade that before adding the recording interface?  If you didn't upgrade that and you have something from Creative or Soundblaster (common audio codecs that resample at slow bitrates)... did you notice a marked improvement with a good mic even tho the soundcard wasn't upgraded?  Is it actually still better than standard webcam type recording sound?  How much better?

In the end... I think this is possibly going to get a bit expensive... but could be quite fun... the hubby seems to be excited about me doing this... but I'm scared that I'm going to get too involved in yet ANOTHER computer upgrade and techie "fun" that I might not really NEED.

If you go down to the bottom of the page you should be able to "view as desktop" or something like that.  I've tried visiting Chordie a few times on my droid... but I always forget my password (My computer browser keeps me logged in at all times) LOL!  maybe I'll change my password here and try it and let you know what I find out.  I am pretty sure tho that the iphone page doesn't allow you to get into the forum.

Good luck Mike!  smile  Everyone's suggestions and ideas in here on what can be causing it are good.  It's amazing how many little things could be a major issue.  Absolutely check on that needing a user/password thing.  Apparently I can set mine up dynamic OR PPPoE according to Belkin's site.

I am assuming because this is a router and not a low end wireless modem that you purchased it and it wasn't just provided by the cable company.  Here's a thought... what do you have wired into it?  If all that's wired into it is the one computer and everything else is connected to it wirelessly... talk to the cable company, they might be able to provide you with a newer wireless modem which would completely replace your current cable modem and the wireless router (but what they provide generally only allows ONE computer hardwired into it).  Just a thought, cuz that of course would be without a charge (well... no more than what you may already be paying them for the modem they generally provide that you "rent" from them).  Then if you were still having issues you could concentrate on upgrading your laptop.

Hi Doc, glad to see you back but I'm sorry to hear things aren't going as we'd all hoped. I'm not sure excatly if you mean't "your in deep s____" because of the nerves or financially because of medical bills or both, but if your ok money wise, I wouldn't make a rash decision to sell your guitars with that fine collection you have. Sit on it awhile if you can, please be sure you want to do that before you have thought it over. I hope, and I'm sure others here do as well, wish good things for you and all you've been through, sometimes things just have a way of working their way at, when it seems darkest. Good luck and please let us all know how things work out.

I agree wholeheartedly with Cam... I can't really think of much more to say... but at least there is a time frame and the possibility of playing again, instead of NEVER.  Hold on to those fine guitars if you can $$ wise.  Wishing you well Doc!

Ok... something else to look at that I found in another forum... Check with your internet provider if you should be using a dynamic connection or PPPoE.  I know with my cable connection it is supposed to be dynamic, so you're probably good there, but double check just in case.  If your router is set for a dynamic connection but your provider uses PPPoE (which requires a user name and password) the you may be able to connect for a little while but eventually your ISP will poll your connection to see if it's legit and then break it on you.

Here's a link to Belkin's site on this information for you about these settings for router and ISP:  http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/ans … il/a_id/79

And here's the link to Belkin's site with all kinds of info about your router including the latest firmware upgrade available:  http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/pro … hZag%3D%3D

I really want to say that the problem sounds like it's with the configuration/settings ... or your laptop's built in wi-fi.  I don't think N was available until 2006.  Now... G should be enough, but I've heard of so many issues with Belkin and Linksys routers being really picky with the adapters on computers if they're not the same brand.  I personally bought a Tp-Link wireless N router because of that reason and I haven't had any problems, but then... everything connecting to it is fairly new also.

F5D8233-4v3. My laptop is an HP 1550 Special edition 2004 model. Evelyn(gf) assures me that the

the wireless is configuered correctly. I run windows XP and have been utilizing Internet Explorer but

I think you mentioned somewhere that it was crap so I went with Mozilla Firefox. It's worse. Evelyns

desktop rarely loses connection unless it's at peak hours and lots of traffic. Our cell phones are

usually nearby but...? The only other device is a Roku box for Netflix movies and it also runs off the

router but I'm never on the laptop and watching Netflix at the same time.  Thanks for your help. Mike

Ok... I'm not sure what your laptop has on it... but since it's from 2004 that kind of sends up a red flag to me right away.  I would double check that you have the ability to connect with at least a G connection... I looked up HP 1550 SE and closest I could find on HP's site is this model number: EP347UA#ABA ???  I don't know for sure what you have.  If you do have that, then you do have the ability to connect B or G.  If not (and you only have b capabilities, then first thing I would do is to get a wireless N connection for the laptop (they can be purchased as a usb stick and if you're keeping that modem stay with the same brand adapter... brand names can be fussy).

Another issue is because that router is N (and backwards capable to connect with b and g), but you're probably not connecting at N speeds with your laptop the router needs to be set appropriately.  You have options such as 802.11B+802.11G+802.11N, or just 802.11N or just 802.11G.  I'm not sure about your Roku box, but there's a good chance that it's connecting with N... so you need to make sure the router is set for the first option (allowing all three)... make sure the top speed is not set at 40mhz (because your G connection can't handle it... it has to be 20mhz ... if you set it to either 20/40mhz then it should automatically adjust itself down to 20mhz for your G connection).  It's probably already set like this or else you wouldn't likely be able to get on at all... but double check that just in case.  I would personally mess around with the settings a little bit and adjust it just to allow the G... see if your connection gets any better and if your Roku box still works well... I wonder if the router is (for some stupid reason) only seeing your laptop's B capabilities and connecting you at that horrid slow speed... if so... it would explain why there's issues with your connection.

Ok... so... make sure the router has the latest firmware upgrade done to it also.  Um... and only other thing I can think of (that no one else has said) ... is when you reset the router... I'm not sure if unplugging it is enough to reset it.  There's actually a reset button on mine that has to be pushed to go one step further.  It saves settings even if unplugged.

Ok... I'll be back in a bit here today and see what else I can dig up on this.  smile

Pretty cool Wayne... the video isn't bad with that unit either.

I've been looking around a little online for something that will work a "little" better than what I have here.  My options are pretty slim.  Either the mic that's on the computer, the still camera that takes video/sound clips, or my Droid that takes stills or video/sound.  I'm trying to keep it on the lower priced end without having to get a sound board and everything... but I'm not finding much I like.  If I had a few hundred to spend, I'm sure I'd choose a new guitar before a recording unit at this point.  BUT that's pretty nice for something to consider down the road!  Thanks for sharing your review with us!

Ha ha ha ha ha... It's not just a "woman" thing... I think it's a spouse thing in general.  My husband knows of a few of the names here on Chordie too as I share a lot.  Computers and the internet are not his "thing"... so he doesn't come here much but to look up some songs occasionally.  Sometimes I get talking about stuff and have to remember that he doesn't "get" the whole "online friends" thing.  He especially doesn't get that we sometimes chat about things that have nothing to do with guitars... "I thought that was a guitar site?" .... ahhhh... The people of Chordie make it so much more!  This is my favorite place to visit with my coffee first thing in the morning (and a few times a day) ... but then, I don't get out much! ha ha ha!

well ... could be a few reasons.  First question is what type of wireless router do you have?  Look for a little letter... a, b, g, n ???  Actually, if you can look at it and tell us specifically what the model and such is, that would help.

Then the next question is what is your laptop capable of?  If it's a newer laptop, it's probably fine... but one never knows (yes, you can easily upgrade this without having to buy a new laptop).  Let us know what the specific model is unless you can find a wifi sticker on there with one of those letters!

If the router is n ... but your computer can't do the n... then you could be connecting at a cruddy rate.  If your wireless signal is cruddy due to any of those factors, something as simple as moving in the wrong direction could interfere with it... someone walking in between the two, or... another possible culprit is wireless telephone or cell phone, radio interference, the neighbor stealing your wifi because the router isn't configured correctly.  OH YES... there's a HOST of issues that could be causing the problem.  Many of these are fixable with a little computer knowledge.  I'm not an expert, but I can help you out a little.  I recently looked into all this stuff and set up a home network.  TonyEspo however IS a computer expert... maybe he'll chime in here!  smile

Excellent beginner music theory there!

To explain how to read these chord charts (which I'm guessing is what you're trying to do?)  Here's an example:

http://www.chordimages.com/ramimages/i5/Achord_N02220_1.png
This is an A chord and the image represents the neck of the guitar.  The top most horizontal line is the nut, the next one is the first fret, the one below that is the second fret (which is where your fingers are going to be for this chord).  The vertical lines indicate the strings on your guitar.  The one on the far left is your Low E string (the lowest sound, thickest string) and the vertical line on the far right is your High E string (the highest sound, thinnest string).  The X on the top indicates that you do NOT play that string when you strum out this chord.  The 0 on the top indicates that you do not fret that string at all.

In tab, the A chord would look like this:
|----0----|
|----2----|  T
|----2----|  A
|----2----|  B
|---------|

or there might be an X on the last line (low E string is not played)

here's a quick lesson on this particular chord:  http://justinguitar.com/en/BC-112-A-chord.php

So... Chords along with their diagrams are also very similar to tab, it represents the strings on the guitar and "shows" you where to put your fingers ... if you don't have the diagram, then you'll want to use that chart Jerome linked to as a reference to look up those chords you need!  smile  Have fun!

Well... I am officially encouraged to learn how to play a Bb and Bm now (and they finally look attainable for me!), but until I get those down well I think I attempt to will play this...

Intro: (F G)
Am F G Am
F G Em
F G Am
F G Am (G Am)

The G and Am at the end are between verses... I'm not 100% yet... I might change it a little, but I think that's where I'm headed right now.  Every one that listened to the song and posted was very similar, and I am really IMPRESSED at how all of you were able to just listen to the song and figure out the chords in there.  I hope to be able to train my ears like that someday!  AWESOME!

As I am going back through, I see that John Somer basically posted these same chords (minus the intro and two chords between verses)!  THANK YOU!  Thank you for hopping on the forum and jumping right in!  WELCOME TO CHORDIE JOHN!

I love all the links too!  Roger... I was excited to read the Wiki on this... only sad there wasn't more info about the origins, so I guess it's a Scottish song then?  "To the Clyde to Mourn and Weep" ... in my Americanized version it's "To Troublesome to Mourn and Weep" ... I looked up info and it appears there's a creek in KY named Troublesome Creek.

Old Doll and Wayne... those are BEAUTIFUL songs!  Thank you for the suggestions (even though I think Wayne said no more hints for me!  ha ha ha!  wink)

WOW!  Very awesome guys!  I can totally see this as part a movie soundtrack!  FANTASTIC!

Zurf, your writing is so eloquent.  smile

I'm not keen on tribute bands that only play ONE other band's music, although they sure can put on a good show.  To me, they're more like "impersonators"; something to see once but not over and over again.  I like bands that "do covers" and can play a range of music from different artists... these bands we see in local bars and at local music events... I do like to hear their originals in there too, not JUST covers.  I personally like to do songs that I somehow make my own, not just because I "can't" do it like the original but because I want to be able to speak through the song (I've never sang a song well that I couldn't relate to personally).  My husband gets terribly flustered with songs because they just aren't "perfect" compared to the original... I have yet to hear him play through an entire song due to getting hung up on that fact!

Stonebridge... thank you!  I think I can work with that... maybe change a little to suit what I am looking for.  I REALLY appreciate you figuring this out for me!  I especially appreciate that you found chords I can do and add the capo!  smile

BTW... I found my sheet music and it does have chords listed above the staff of...

Eflat, Cm, F7, Bflat,
Gm, Eflat,
Dm, Gm, Cm, Gm,
EflatMaj7, Cm7

with Bflat and Eflat throughout the melody

I am assuming those are piano chords, since this is a solo voice and piano arrangement... but I don't know if that helps at all.  I think I'll try what you've written out here for me Stonebridge... no worries trying to figure it out further, this works!  Thank you again!

Oh... I found some doing it on youtube based on my version I have here... It's by John Jacob Niles if anyone wants to look up the piano (Americanized) version that I learned.

Hello friends!  So... there's this song that I did for a competition solo years ago with a piano... I looked it up and come to find out it's an old folk song (not sure if it's Irish or Scottish ... apparently there's some debate about that).  Anyhow, the folk version is VERY different than the version I learned... but I'd like to find a way to meld the two and do "my version".  So here's my problem...

C

It doesn't fit!  Here's the link to the song here on Chordie:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … ranspose=0

This is *kind of* the way I learned it:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFApa21pH0U

The C doesn't feel right in the song... seems like it should be "higher"... like the G... but I don't really want to play the G and not have the different lines differentiated.  Also... I don't know if I am totally doing the E7 wrong or what but an open E sounds better.

BTW... if there's any one out there (Alvee... Old Doll... ) that KNOWS how this song is supposed to sound in it's original form (oh, and can you clear it up... is it Irish or Scottish?) and you can point me to a youtube video, I would GREATLY appreciate it!  I hear a lot of similarities but they're all a touch different too (especially the WORDS).  THANK YOU!
