Hi killallm,

Like daddycool I think it looks a bit short but you may well have instrumental parts or repeats of lyrics when you play it. As you have a band I assume you have most of the gear needed so how about recording it so we can hear it to be able to comment more fairly. If you have nowhere to upload it, I run 'Friends of Chordie' on Myspace for just that eventuality and I would be happy to put it there for you.

Hi Ditastore,

I, or any of the other administrators, can change your user name, however you will lose your songbook by doing so. If you wish to take this route please send me a private e-mail and I will sort it for you,

Hi James,

I think I could do with some Secret Sauce. Do you think my local herbal rememdy shop will keep it, or is it only available in America?

A good fun song, both easy to play and to find a melody.

Hi Jeff,

A thought provoking song and very true, of course being young means that you think know better than anyone else. It is only as we mature that we realise that this is not true. I know that I look back and realise that had I listened to some of the advice I was given in my fomative years, life would certainly have been a lot easier.

Good song, well done,

Roger

Hi Phill,

I have just listened to both versions of the song and I have to agree with Ark that I too prefer the second version. It is completely different by being spoken and the music sets the right atmosphere.

Hi Phill,

Well it certainly ain't a poem any more it has been transformed into a great song. I thoroughly enjoyed litening to it.

Thank you,

Roger

The way I look at it is this:

In speech one's mouth is often working faster then one's brain and we often swear without realising it. Chordie however is a written medium so anything that is posted is thought about and deliberate, not involuntary, and when it comes down to it there are far better descriptive words in the English language than profanities.

We must remember that ladies and small children are regular visiters to the site, it is not an adult, male only, domain. I certainly can swear as well as the next one when out with my mates but in front of my grandchildren, never.

Hi Mark,

If look in the Public Songbooks under Absolute Beginners you can scan through them and look for songs that you know and like and they should not be too taxing to play.

After seeing a comment from Russell Harding I visited your MySpace, Phill, to listen to this song. It is brilliant and I will second Russ in saying that you really should let us know when you upload them. To hear the song as you intend it is the icing on the cake.

Well done Phill,

Hi Daddycool, Russell, Phill and Toney,

Thank you. I am somewhat overwhelmed by your comments and immensely pleased that you liked it. It was harder work than usual, doing things the wrong way round, having to put words to music and writing about a completely alien theme, cause it sure ain't a love song. Perhaps I should try it more often smile.

Again a big thank you to Kenny and my three secret advisors.

Thank you,

Roger

Hi Leo and Kerry,

If you go the Public Songbooks and select Absoute beginners then look for "Strum-a-Long" by The Trainer858 you will find 6 of the Beatles songs which are easy to play and should give you a start. You may find more if you look through the other Begginers Songbooks.

All of the Beatles song can be strummed. Even if they were originally played with a difficult strumming pattern you can play it to a simpler one to make it your own variation and let your vocals carry the song.

I hope that helps.

Thank you James, Dino and Ark.

James, I only discoverd the haunting tones of the autoharp when you started recording and I found a rather old one (70's I believe) at a reasonable price, so I had to have it.

Dino, I am pleased you think that my song puts the message over.

Ark, I have been using a Tascam 4 track which records to audio cassette, but as it is 4 mono tracks in reality had only two sterio tracks to work with and re-recording on to tape meant loss of audio quality. I have had Audacity on my PC for ages and now wish I had started using it long ago.

Hi Kenny,

Thank you for your kind words.

I used, for the first time, the free Audacity software on this song and was able to lay down 4 instrument and 4 vocal tracks. As your sharp ears picked up I did use my newly aquired Autoharp to enhance the chorus, although it will take me some time, if ever, to be as proficient as James with it.

Hi Tom,

Topdowns suggestion may work for you.

As for my suggestion you must select the actual Make and Model that you have to get the correct drivers that are already built into Windows XP and don't select have disk let Windows look for it's own, but on saying that it looks like it may not work for you. And I doubt if the driver for my HP 990c would work for your 1215.

Hi Kenny,

I just gave this one a 'wail and a holler' fast and loud. Great fun, easy to play and a good song to boot.

Keep them coming.

Hi Daddycool,

I know what you say you do for a living but I am beginning to suspect that you really, strap on your Colt Peacemaker, don your stetson and mount your trusty steed to roam the Derbyshire prairie fighting evil and rescuing fair maidens lol.

Nice song, thank you,

Hi Getfiddle,

With fingers aching I have just played your song (including a few muffed chords lol). Mind you the C/G gave me no trouble at all as I always play C that way, years ago I found it make changing to F far easier and it has stuck.

Good song, so how about a recording so we can hear the melody you intended for it?

Thank you,

Roger

Hi Kenny,

Talk about boy's toys and boy's dreams you have got it to a 'T'. The chording is absolutely perfect for this song so I won't be following you down this road lol.

I cannot wait to see the chorus added to this, and of course then you will have to record it and join the Chordie band of minstrels smile.

Great song, well done.

Hi Tom,

Sorry I did not get round to replying before but I will tell you the method I used as I did not have to download seperate drivers. (Also I did have to set up another one myself as I had forgotten how I had done it smile).

1/ Go into Control Panel and change the name of your printer to something like Original Printer (you will change it back later}.

2/ Click Add Printer.

3/ On Local or Network Printers, untick Automatically Detect Plug and Play Printer, click next.

4/ Select the port your printer is conected to (normally LPT1 but in my case it is USB0001), clicl next.

5/ Select the Make and Model of your printer and click next

You should now have a second printer showing in your control panel. you can now change its name to Chordie Print and give your Original Printer back its proper name.

Although I only have one printer I have set up three printers in my control panel, my original printer (with HP software), a Photo Print one (with HP software but configuered for photo printing), and my Chordie Print one (with the built in XP software). I then only have to select the printer for the job it is to do without having to change the settings.

This song is very different from my usual ones and it is all Kenny Peters (KAP54) fault. After playing his "Cast Off By The City Lights" and being very impressed with it I thought I would have probably used a different melody so, as you do, I picked up my guitar. Before I knew it I had completly re-written the music. I then realised that I had a big problem - I had music I liked but I had no lyrics. The tone of the piece meant that I needed a similar theme to Kenny's which is not my usual style and I wanted hard hitting lyrics to get the message across. So I owe Kenny a big thank you for this song.

However although I liked the result, because it is an emotive subject and a new direction for me, I sent a first-take copy and the lyrics to three wordsmiths whose work I admire to ask their opinion. Helpful suggestions were made, but after much thinking and trying ideas out, I ended changing just a couple of words as I could not alter the lyrics without changing the message I was attemping to put over. So another big thank you is owed to those three also.

This is such a change from my usual stuff that I would appreciate an honest opinion.

As usual it is on MySpace for you to hear: http://www.myspace.com/rogerguppy

For the non-Brits "dole" is the slang for unemployment benefit and "quid" is slang for an English pound.

Thank you,

Roger

How tragic, inexperience and a moment's thoughtlessness and young life is ended. My usual ending to a message is particularly apt.

Take care.

Hi Edward and welcome to Chordie,

Now the only guy I know who did not make a mistake died some 2000 years ago so do not worry about it. At least it got you put your first message on the Forum and now you have taken that step hopefully you will contribute more often.
