There are also apps for the droid based phones... and I'm sure the iphone as well.  Hmmm... not sure about the phone you have Flester... if it's not a "smartphone" then I think you're limited by whatever your cell company has to offer, but I just got into apps when I got my Moto Droid, I didn't even know that there were apps for blackberries before I started this venture (been behind a bit, yeah).

Of course... you "could" record some tuning notes, convert to MP3, and load that as a music file onto your phone (I assume your phone can play mp3s) ... and then at the very least you'd have a portable reference!  smile

Doug... I KNEW there had to be a simple solution to the buttermilk issue!  Yogurt makes total sense!  I never had Turkish style Baklava ... I did create a baklava once with chocolate, coconut, and cashews and it was fantastic!

Ok, so scones are very much like buttermilk biscuits then, just a bit sweeter ... every time I've tried to make them they've come out very dry with the recipes in my cook book.  Now that I know how their texture is supposed to be I think I can figure these out!  smile

That brown bread sounds fantastic!  I can already guess how it's going to taste... yes, I will have to make that for certain!

Lena... yes, I am an earth sign, Capricorn smile  Old before my time, but getting younger each day I age!  LOL!  I keep the calories off by chasing around a 5 and 2 1/2 year old all day long and taking care of everyone in the house (5 people, 2 dogs) on top of running my little salon in the house.  My mom did a little bit of baking, sewing, and chocolate candy making at home (and taught me what she knew) when I was a kid... and when I was a teenager I learned about yeast breads in school and fell in love!  smile  I am more of a "Suzie Homemaker" than anyone I know.  LOL!  I don't sew our clothing however, just the Halloween costumes!  ha ha!

OH BTW... I am addicted to Chocolate.  What gets you with those little cakes is the butter... but I suppose it's not any worse than the biscuits!  smile

Topdown... Chrome doesn't have a bunch of add ons... it "just works".  I imagine it's doing all my ad blocking for me, but I also run avast (free antivirus that has blockers in it) and threatfire (another free heuretics type antivirus).  I don't get junky pop ups.

Welcome to Chordie Daveyaview!  The editing feature on Chordie is disabled.  I guess there were some issues and the admin had to disable it.  If you go to this page:  http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=20  and read through you will find out more information about that.  Thanks for trying to help out!

Kids do say the funniest things sometimes!  Very cute!  My 5 year old is constantly asking what we are eating for dinner.  "pork chops" ... "but what IS pork chops?  Is it a co?"... "no it's pig" ... "ok then, Mom just say we are having pig please."

Gil, another excellent job!  Your acoustic cover of this original version sounds great.  Your voice really fits well!  I play with the strumming pattern every time I play this one and I really like how you've done it.  Great!

Well... my husband did get me the Zoom H2 yesterday... I haven't really done much with it yet, hopefully I will get some time today ... I did however read the manual front to back.  This thing does WAY more than I thought it did!  I think the only thing it doesn't do is upload directly to the internet!  Ha ha!  FYI... the one thing I did record was my voice and I was BLOWN AWAY with the quality!  I was in the living room with cartoons going on the tv... I was able to set this up with a few button pushes so that it heard my voice and it BARELY picked up the background noise... I think if I'd have put the wind screen on (because I had the mic close to my mouth) it would have gotten rid of the little bit that was there... and audacity would have easily gotten rid of it.  I AM IMPRESSED and I haven't even really used it yet!

Welcome to the forum Dave!  I can't help you with the backing tracks... just wanted to say hi!  Hang in there... you might get more responses if others have more info.  Jump in on any other discussions while you're waiting!  smile

It it'll raise the value of the American dollar, I bet the president will insist upon it.  LOL!

The kids are actually taught some of the metric system in school.  I do remember in high school science classes our measurements were always in metric, but when we step on the scale we measure ourselves in pounds.  When I cook, I measure by cups and spoons rather than weight (I have heard that measuring flour by weight is far better than volume but I haven't begun to do it myself yet).  Vehicles are manufactured mostly overseas, so good mechanics have two sets of tools now a days (actually, do it yourselfers do too... I think my husband's set of metric wrenches and such get more use than the others).  We do use the centimeter and millimeter measurements a lot.  They're on our rulers and measuring tapes along with inches, feet and yards.

But for the most part I don't see it being a change that will happen, completely wiping out imperial measurements, unless someone with a lot of authority in the American government actually does push it.

Lena... they look PERFECT!  I'm thrilled that you (and your friends and family) enjoyed them so much!  I love the "A"!  Ha ha!  Fantastic!  It is quite funny... getting a great southern buttermilk biscuit recipe from a "Yankee" on a guitar forum over in Ireland.  In the South they are for breakfast, lunch, and dinner... in the North no one has a good recipe.... and in Ireland I guess Lena is now going to make a name for them!  smile  You can add butter and preserves... or serve Sausage Gravy over them with over easy eggs ... or like I did with a creamy chicken and veggie concoction over them!

That brown bread looks delicious too.  Is that a quick bread or a yeast bread my dear?  As for scones... yes, I guess these do have some similarities.  I've only tried my hand a few times at scone recipes and I prefer these biscuits... I've tried a few sweeter, dessert like recipes as well but haven't found any that I "love"...  perhaps you have a great traditional scone recipe to share with me?

I'm very sorry to hear that you had bad news as well... perhaps more baking is in order... there's nothing like homemade baked goods to soothe the soul (baking them as well as eating them).

Speaking of GREAT recipes... last night was my son's 14th birthday and I made "gourmet" quality little cakes from my chocolate lovers cookbook.

Individual Molten Chocolate Cakes ... The description in my cookbook reads, "This luscious soft cake looks conventional on the plate, but when you cut into it, the center is runny, like the yolk of a soft boiled egg" ... WHEN I make these again, I think I'll drizzle a little chocolate or raspberry syrup on the bottom of the plate and just a touch over the ice cream.  smile

PapaTom... are you still considering this?  From what I've read (and this is a generalization), the recorders in the "under $100" price range all record about the same... the more you pay the more you get as far as file size, overall recording time, different file types, ease to connect to a computer, battery life etc.  Once you get close to $100 you're getting better mics and such.  I was looking at these, and at recording interfaces... this is for music but I wasn't looking for anything overly special.  In the end however, I thought about what I might want down the road.  The H4 looks like it's quite the recording powerhouse, and priced as such.  In fact, I'd say it's priced like what it actually is, a computer interface with built in mics... more than just a personal recorder.  I told my husband what I was looking at, and I think he's planning on "surprising" me with an H2.  Compared to other recorders at it's price range... it's got a LOT of other features that make it really stand out.  The H2 has 4 mics where all the others at this price range (that I found) have 2 ... it can hook directly to the computer and double as a USB recording interface (or rather, like a USB microphone).  It comes with a lot of accessories that the others in this $$ don't come with (an AC adapter is a biggie as buying these for other units cost between $25 and $50).  I'd say... for what you're looking to do the H2 would be more than enough (it's more than enough for what I want to do... but has the ability to go further if I so choose).  In the end, if you want uber awesome sound you're still looking at making all those connections with ANY hand held recorder that I've seen (except the H4 with those xlr inputs... I think that's the ONLY thing that really stands out to me for my needs as well as your needs, especially with what you say about not wanting to chain adapters).

Anyhow... let me know if you're still looking, if I do get the H2 I'll do a little voice recording for you to hear the quality for yourself.  I think listening to "real" people do tests on these makes a big difference rather than just what you hear on the company's websites.  I don't have a mic, so I won't be able to show the sound compares once you put a mic in ... but I think the idea here with the H2 is that you won't HAVE to.

GOOD LUCK ROGER!  I hope you can find the buttermilk!  I'm glad to hear you're a good cook... otherwise by this time next year I would have HAD to spend a lot of money on postage sending you some homemade goodies that I thought would make it!  Yes... I'm always sending home goodies with friends/family/ and over to the teachers at school!  LOL!  I really did mean it too... I'd have attempted to send them off if you really wanted me to!  smile

Badeye... I was a short order cook for a bit (breakfast foods only)... I think I was a bit too short!  hee hee!

NELA... your LA biscuits sound like downright greasy homecooking goodness at it's best!  They sound delish!  smile  I imagine they're rather similar in taste... selfrising flour in lieu of baking powder... oil in lieu of butter... and your flavor no doubt is coming from that very well seasoned Cast Iron skillet right?  Grandma was raised on a farm, she cooked everything in a cast iron skillet!

11PM... wow... they REALLY want to get that job done!  They must be busy down there with work!  That's awesome to hear on your end and theirs Zurf!

Up here we still have tons of Unions (I understand N.C. And S.C. are both served by one Ironworker's Union... we have at least 5 Ironworker Union Halls within a 3 hour drive)... and my husband is always complaining about the lazy bums he gets on his crews.  He's one of the rare ones that actually works.  I can't imagine being out there with the incompetence and lazies that he has to deal with... especially with some of the stories I hear.  He also teaches the apprentices at the Hall on Saturdays... not just for the money, but in the hopes that when he gets some of these new guys on his crew down the road, they'll have a little work ethic and knowledge!  As for the slow workers... he lays them off (always ends up as foreman on jobs even if he doesn't start as foreman) and gets new guys from the hall... or tells them to get out of his way so he can get his work done!

OK but lets get some facts straight right from the start.

One. I do not have a food mixer so it will be a hand job.

Two. I do not know if I can get buttermilk here. Most of the milk sold is that revolting UHT stuff, although one or two places do sell the pasturised milk (and I know all the local shops that do smile). I will make a point of looking for buttermilk, liquid or powder form, when I go shopping this weekend.

Three. I am going to have to find out the Portuguese for baking soda and baking powder as these items I have never bought before.

Four. I better have a supply of Gaviscon (stong stomach medicine not available in Portugal) sent over from the UK before I try my hand at cooking these.

Roger

Stage whisper: I wonder if Amy might send me some if I ask her nicely?????  hmm

Ok my friend... we cannot have you going for much longer without ever having buttermilk biscuits!  I did a quick google search for some translations and here's what I have for you (mind you, some of this may be "Spanish" not Portuguese... I looked it up, I really don't have a clue!)

Baking Powder = Fermento Artificial ??? directly it is:  fermento em pó ... another option:  polvo de hornear
Baking Soda = fermento royal ... or bicarbonato de sodio/soda/sosa

It's possible they might have some UHT buttermilk...  My family would have a hard time there, or in Alaska... with 5 in this house, we drink about a gallon a day!  The powdered buttermilk comes in a canister and you just mix it with water... so there's a good chance you have that there for purchase (maybe).  Same idea as powdered milk.

Buy a Pastry Blender (they MUST have these)!  They are cheap (about $5 in the states) and look like this
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:9xdXyGNoF_HVRM:http://www.alliedkenco.com/catalog/images/PASTRY_BLENDER.jpg

You hold onto the handle part there and push down and rock... It just cuts the butter into little pieces as the flour mixes in with it (plus, you'll be able to make all sorts of goodies like tarts and pie crusts  ha ha!)

As for the Gaviscon... I can't help you there... LOL!  I'd like to believe these wouldn't bother you ... sad  but then I've been lucky to never have major stomach or heartburn issues (knocking on wood as I type this)

---- Send you some... hmmm... How fast is shipping from NY USA to Portugal?  I'm afraid they'd get moldy or something before they got there!  Is it legal to ship baked goods there?  Look into it and let me know!  I'll try it!!!!!  Or... I could just ship the ingredients you need!  I can throw in a package of Rolaids or Tums too!  LMAO!  ---

Russell has an excellent idea there... look around, there must be some bakeries????  (when I feel like cheating, Pillsbury makes a bake at home option... purchase in the dairy section usually... they come in a tube - but no, not the same as homemade)

Lena -- You are VERY welcome!  I hope they turn out wonderful for you!  I LOVE to bake... and my reminder to you is the "do not over work the dough" ... I enjoy baking breads a lot too and it's really difficult for me sometimes to leave this dough alone when I'm so used to kneading yeast breads!  smile

smile  Who?  Me?????  Standing in for Sheryl Crow?  smile  Sounds like FUN!  I just heard that the "Easter Bunny" is handling electronics this year... so I'm thinking a somewhat decent recording from a new H2 or something of the like.  Hopefully I'll figure out how to work whatever it is I get by the time you've got it worked out on your end!  Keep me updated, and I'll see what I can do to LEARN this!  It's a pretty song!

Are these the correct lyrics?

I agree with deadstring... you are not truly enlightened until you actually have tried some!  Follow the directions, they're really easy to make and the big trick is MINIMAL handling (which actually makes it easier to make than lots of other things).  If you use a food processor to cut the butter in, it should only take a few seconds (a couple pulses)... make sure not to overdo it and actually whip the butter... you want it to look all crumbly!  If you don't have a food processor OR a pastry blender you can use two knives... and in the good ole days Grandma used her fingertips ... but again... minimal working because you don't want to actually melt the butter, just mix it into the flour mixture!  smile

yeah... and I ONLY use buttermilk for baking... that stuff just tastes yucky on it's own!

Ahh... Yes, the more back and forth I go (just like a woman huh?  LOL) with this the more I think I will end up with something like the H2... in the end it's going to be cheaper for me and also easier to record considering my computer is set up in the middle of the house where all the noise is all the time.  I see now that you CAN buy nicer mics and adapters and hook them into these units if I decide to spend more down the road.  That is very good to know!

In case anyone IS looking for an interface, I see that the Alesis MultiMix 4 USB Compact Mixer currently has a $10 rebate, bringing the after rebate price down to around $70 for a NEW, not used, entry level mixer/interface.  Also, a neat place to shop online for used gear is daddys.com ... they have lots of new stuff in the stores too if you happen to be in the North East.  Apparently used gear isn't very heavily discounted (even on ebay, I'm surprised how well this stuff seems to retain it's price), but you can save a few bucks by buying used.

Well... I tried using my Droid as a recorder... tons of "hiss" background noise with it when played back through the phone's speaker ... I haven't seen yet what I can remove with audacity... I might try that today for the heck of it.  This expensive phone has a guitar tuner, video recorder, barcode scanner and everything else you could imagine... one would think it'd be capable of being a "decent" voice/audio recorder too.

Ok... so I'm getting the impression that what I looked up about the soundcard resampling audio might be off... if you're going to use a usb or firewire interface, although I haven't gotten a solid answer there yet.  Sounds like it doesn't matter too much... especially since I've heard Wayne's recordings and they sound very good!

So... next dilemma of mine... while I really like the idea of the H2, my big problem is that my voice usually drowns out my guitar - or rather, I wish my guitar sounded louder once I start singing.  For that reason, I'd either have to have 2 mics (I think) or I'd have to record guitar and vocals at separate times (with the H2).  Soooo... I'm kinda leaning a bit toward going with the interface.  Doing all my research and will check them out.  I have no clue how soon it will be till I buy something, could be a while down the road yet!  LOL!  I wonder if the guitar stores have any H2's available that I could try out and see how it records both at the same time in the store.  hmmm...

Here's the wiki on it!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttermilk

It's still cows milk... but traditionally it's the milk left after churning butter out of cream that's been sitting a bit and is slightly fermented.  It's a bit thicker and acidic (ads a sour taste but not as strong as sourdough bread).  None of it is "traditional" anymore... but has the similar flavor.  I don't keep it on hand, but what I do keep on hand is a powdered buttermilk that I add to water to create buttermilk for recipes.

minimal chill time... but the hubby took the kids off to a show at the middle school so I am at least ALONE.  Stopped for a minute to throw some chocolate brownies in the oven and thought I'd check in quick.

Old Doll... Buttermilk Biscuits are an everyday Southern affair in the states... I imagine our crew from N. Carolina will agree there's nothing like a homemade buttermilk biscuit with... well... just about anything!  LOL!  I honestly found this recipe online and it's very good (better than in any of my cookbooks!)  Enjoy!  Oh... and sorry... measurements are in cups and spoons!

2 Cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons unsalted butter (cold from the fridge)
3/4 Cup buttermilk (keep it cold)

-Oven to 450 degrees F
-mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl **I like mine a TOUCH sweet... so I add about a tablespoon of sugar to the dry ingredients (I've never seen this in a buttermilk biscuit recipe so try at your own risk LOL!)**
-cut the butter into the flour mixture (using a pastry blender or food processor... till appears as course crumbs)
-add the buttermilk and mix GENTLY with a fork until JUST combined (just want to get everything wet)... it will be a sticky mess... perfect!
-turn dough out onto a very LIGHTLY floured mixing surface
-with floured hands very gently PAT the dough out to about 1/2" (inch) thick ... DO NOT USE A ROLLING PIN
-using a FLOURED round cutter (cookie cutter, or turned over coffee cup works well), cut into rounds and place onto an UNgreased cookie sheet (or silicone cooking sheet, or parchment lined cookie sheet... whatever you like they all work here!)  If you want the sides soft, place them just touching (these ones will rise higher)... if you like the sides crunchy place about 1 inch apart
-you can knead the scraps together to make a few more, but they aren't going to be a GREAT as the rest... ever so gently... never over work!
-Bake for about 10-15 minutes... you're looking for them to have risen and be a very light golden on top and bottom... if you over bake they get hard and the bottoms burn.  If you're not going to bake them right away, stick them in the fridge to keep the butter from getting soft.  You could also freeze these and take one or two out at a time and bake as needed.

The KEY... is do not handle the dough too much... not only will the butter melt from the heat of your hands, but the gluten will become activated in the flour and create tougher biscuits.  (I love watching the cooking shows)

It's been a bit chilly and rainy here lately, although we're supposed to get warmer weather for this coming weekend.  My 2 year old is sick, and I'm tired and stressed not being able to get much work or housework done the past few days.  Anyhow... I'm calling it a Chicken and homemade buttermilk biscuits night.  If anyone wants to fly into SYR and rent a car to drive to my little hick town tonight, dinner will be ready around 5 or 6 eastern standard time.  That's in about three hours (so HURRY)... after that... I'm putting the hubby on kid duty and I'm going to find a place to chill with my guitar in peace (although if you do show up, I think it might just be dry enough for a little campfire... I know... middle of the week?  am I crazy?  ha ha ha... just a little!)  smile  Hope all my Chordie friends have a  GREAT evening!

That sounds good Wayne... I did some more digging into this and while getting an interface and a decent mic sounds good... being able to take the H2 into a different room (away from the fish tank and kids) sounds better.  I'll check them out next time I head into the music store!  Thanks!
