Here in Portugal there are many Nativity scenes about at Christmas, as there are elsewhere, but the crib is normally left empty until Christmas eve and only then is baby Jesus put in it. This may be done elswhere but I had never seen it until I came here.

Hi Kenny,

Your liking of Dylan certainly comes through with this song. It is not easy to keep a song interesting when only two chords are used but you have done an excellent job with this one.

Great stuff! Thank you,

Roger

Hi Helena,

And to Kenny too, it is 14:30 and I am sat in just shorts with a fan blowing on me. We had a shower two weeks ago and that is the first rain since April. cool Portugal is great!

Hi Daddycool,

A thought provoking number. There is an element of parents seem to neglect to teach disipline and respect to their offspring these days. Police and teachers are unable to issue the short, sharp punishment that, in my youth, helped keep us on the straight and narrow. Your song is a reminder of this. Thank you,

Hi Buvvy,

My friend you have a long memory and are not going to let me forget my mishap; but I must say the roast ants, cooked by aerosol, is a delicacy and a speciality of mine lol

Apologies for going off thread,

Hi Daddycool,

I made a slight amendment to get the special formatting to work for you, I hope you do not mind. You have just about got it right, the only mistake is that you are entering the line that should be the first in your message as the subject of the thread. Click on the edit of your post and you will see the minor change I have made at the start.

That being said it is a nice song which brought a smile as I played it. Being a grandad several times over and a surrogate grandad to several more including at present, my friend's 6 month old daughter, Verity. The beauty of being a grandparent is you can have the fun and pleasure of having babies around but you can give them back when you have had enough. Unlike young Helena I am getting too old to want to take on the 24/7 challenge of babycare.

Hi David,

Obviously the song has merit otherwise your friends would not like it so, if you are unhappy with the lyrics you have used, then keep the melody and write fresh lyrics that you are happy with. You could possible just change the context of the song my making it "Alistair is a pal" or something similar.

Roger.

PS. When you are happy with it please post it here and if you record it I can put it on Friends of Chordie (MySpace) if you have no where else to upload it.

Hi Basti,

I hope, when you take the plunge, that you are satisfied with your purchase. Please let us know what guitar you do decide on and I hope it gives you years of pleasure.

Hi Geoaguiar and Adrianos,

If you check Basti's post you will see that he/she is looking to learn to play on the Ibanez guitar so it is unlikely he/she is able to play it to make a comparison. Whilst your advise is excellent for a player choosing a new guitar, a non player is unlikely to be able take advantage of it, but if Basti has a friend who already is a player taking them along armed with your advise is a good idea.

Thank you Riddler and Russ,

Randy, I have previously worked with Helena and it is an experience I cherish as she is a far better lyricist than I, and a charming lady also.

Helena you are far too modest, far from 'change' even 'drastically change' you re-wrote the lyrics completely, you performed superb work with the lyrics, the song is as much yours as mine.

I get a lot of pleasure from playing the original songs posted on Chordie which have the added challenge of finding a melody for them and then finding how different they are when the composer records them.

Hello Basti and welcome to Chordie,

I have not played an Ibanez myself but I am sure from previous posts that there are several Members who use this make and are very happy with it.

Hi Kenny,

Another good recording from you and I particularly like the sound effects in the backgroung. A nice touch that.

For me it was very strange hearing this song as you know from my previous mesage and our correspndance that I had put my own chords and melody to your lyrics (I put my own lyrics to my music eventually and it became 'Slave to Addiction'). I listened to your song a couple of times until the strangeness wore off and I have to say it is a good job, well done.

Roger

Thank you Kerry,

I now understand. I shall have to remember the word 'Chav' though as it is far more polite than the one I would normally use lol

I will be wishing you well and a speedy escape from the dreaded big 'H'.

Looking forward to your return to health and to Chordie.

Hi Derek and welcome to Chordie,

Being new to Chordie you might not realise that it is not really a good idea to post a message in a completely unrelated thread as it can all too easily get overlooked and your query does deserve a thread of its own and an answer.

I would suggest, sooner than trying to delete songs that you might need in the future from your existing song book, that you start a new one as you can have several songbooks.

Take care,

Roger

If anyone wanting to accept Russ's challenge, but is having difficulties and could do with some help, I am willing to do what I can. My entry is completed and in Russ's hands.

I would like to see entries from Members who have not recorded and written songs before, so please e-mail me privately if I can be of assistance.

What the heck are 'Chavs'?

Hi Nedaph and welcome to Chordie,

I think there are two possibilities here:

One: Consciously or subconsciouly, you are still having to think of of your chord shapes when you change and the mental effort put into your left hand creates hesitation in your right.

Two: You are trying to change chords as you see them in the music, when if fact you have to start changing before, so that your fingers land on the right strings where the chords are shown in the music.

I am afraid that in either case the only answer is practice but rest assured that it will come in time and at six months of playing you can not expect to be playing perfectly. Playing your songs much slower might help and then gradually increase the tempo.

Keep at it, it will be worth it in the end.

Hi Kenny,

The bug seems to have got to you (well two have if you count the cold lol).

I liked this one in fact I could not resist picking up my guitar and playing along with you. I am looking forward to hearing more of your previously posted songs especially American Dream to find out how it is supposed to be sung.

Thank you,

Roger

Ok it is nothing to do with music but what the heck this is the chat forum after all and it is an incredible and a moving story.

I was told, only this week, about a very successful song writer and as this is hearsay I will not name him but he has written hits for Cliff Richard, Cilla Black and Elvis Presley.

Allegedly he called into a music school to ask for uke lessons and it transpired that he did not even know how to tune it and did not even know the notes on a keyboard. He was asked how he was able to write songs without being able to play an instrument. Apparently he would write the lyrics and have a melody in his head which he was able work out by playing one note at a time on a keyboard but unable to write it down. He would show this to a musican who would then, for a fixed fee, write the music for him. He was also asked how he managed to make the break and get his first song to a star and although he was a reluctant to be specific he did say that it was through perseverence. It was not possible to find out whether he sent out music and lyrics or a recording of his work which would have been nice to know.

So for this guy the ingedients are the ablility to write catchy lyrics and knowing someone who can convert dodgy, one fingered keyboard playing into recognisable music.

Hi Phill, Ark, Kenny and Daddycool,

Thank you for your comments. Helena was a life saver with this one, her lyrics are great and the idea behind them an inspiration; a theme I would not have thought of in a million years.

Collaboration is fun.
