Great song, Graham ... every line resonates (unfortunately - LOL).

Topic: Tremolo Blues (11 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
A few of us on Chordie installed Stetsbar Tremolos on our Les Paul's over the last 2 years. I was jamming with some friends last Saturday, and had to keep stopping to re-tune. The trem itself seemed to be staying in tune okay, but every time I did any string bending, those strings would go flat. My Elixir strings are a couple months old, so they're well broken in. Apart from the D'Addario NYXL's, every kind of strings I've tried with it require constant retuning. But the NYXL's go dead in less than a month (uncoated, sweaty hands).
So the Stetsbar is now off with the original bridge reinstalled, new strings went on Sunday night, and when I picked it up again last evening it was perfectly in tune. As much as I enjoy using a trem, this nuisance factor is a pain in the pa-tootie.
Russell ... are you having similar experiences with your Stetsbar? Or is this just a tremolo "thing" that has to be tolerated?

We got approx. 35 cms (15 inches) of snow yesterday, and today's high winds are creating drifting problems over much of Nova Scotia. Our fishing season opens on April 1st, but it doesn't look like there'll be any open water by then. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr ...

Re: Strumming Patterns (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hello, RC ...
I'll pass along a wee tip my Dad gave me when I was a kid. He taught me to mute the strings (fret hand) and use the pick hand on the strings like the guitar was a washboard when listening to a song I wanted to learn. Over the years, I've found this a very useful way to pick up strum patterns, by just being the "rhythm section" without focusing on the chords or notes at first.

Another great number featuring Nick Barrett's silky guitar playing, and solid accompaniment all around the stage. It seems that Poland has been a real hotbed for Prog Rock in the last 10 years. A lot of great bands are active there, both as home-grown and visiting groups.

Re: How do you start your day? (1 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Sounds like an awesome day, NELA! Given your health battles, it's great that you can relax, enjoy time with your missus, and the outdoors.
I'm usually up at 5:00 or before, as I've been an early riser all my life. It hasn't made me healthy, wealthy, or wise ... but who cares, right? Don't know what our alarm clock sounds like. First thing is to get the coffee going, then enjoy a cup or two while checking Chordie and a fly fishing forum I take part in. After checking my home & work email, I'm usually out the door by 7:30 for work. I typically log about 1300 kms (800 miles) each week. I work for a small business lobby group since selling my own business 7 years ago. I now meet with business owners each day to discuss ways to shape policies from the gov't, banks, credit card companies, etc., as well as providing services and resources to help them succeed.
My dear wife usually has a nice supper on when I get home, and we talk about the day we've had, family stuff (we have 2 boys who are 29 and 33), etc. She teaches horseback riding, so usually heads to the barn for a couple hours each evening. That's when the guitars get turned up, 'cuz no one gets disturbed. Once she's home, we might watch a movie together, or I'll be tying flies, reading a good book, etc. We're usually turned in by 10:30 or so, and aggravate each other all night with our snoring (we both snore loudly).
Saturday mornings I love to watch an English Premiership soccer game (my favorite sport - a Manchester United fan for many decades), or there'll be chores around the house, errands to run, etc. We both love to do all things together. We also attend little country church nearby on Sundays, where we have some great friends, and usually share a Sunday dinner together with some of them. In the warmer weather, we're both outdoors as much as we can be, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, etc. My wife is my best friend of almost 36 years, and even though we each have some individual friends, we enjoy each other's company a great deal. She's a real blast to be around, and we both appreciate that we each have a childish side, even though we're nearing 60 years old.

Porcupine Tree "My Ashes" Tillburg, 2008
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYOUQXhXO24
I know it isn't Saturday, but I learned to play this song this week, and just can't get this haunting melody out of my head. I love John Wesley's voice in the chorus, but my own vocal range forces me to sing it an octave lower.

Terrific group, Badeye!
"The Band" were one of many groups where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. My fav (Jethro Tull) didn't have any musicians who I would say were at the top of the heap talent-wise. But together ... wow! Pink Floyd is another example.

Thanks, SB Bill ... I don't have any recording gear, or I'd be happy to upload a sample. Then you could hear how lousy I am! (LOL)
The amp itself has a 100-watt output, and the speakers are rated at 60w and 65w (both at 16 ohm) similar to what was in the cabinet originally. This is more power than I need also, but I got the amp a couple years ago for $500 (brand new, taxes incl) so it was too good a buy to walk away from. Adding in the extra $150 for the new speakers (total $650), and it now sounds (to my ears) as good as a Marshall JVM210C, which lists for $2,900 CDN at Musician's Friend.

Re: Your All-Star Dream Band (9 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
That's a great team SB Bill.
This is an imaginary scenario, so deceased or otherwise doesn't matter, and most singers lose some range as they age. I wouldn't want Ian Gillan's voice today, but in the 70's? Amazing! My second choice bassist would be the late John Glascock (Jethro Tull) who passed away in 1979. I agree that Carl Palmer is one of the best drummers alive, and Neil Peart (Rush) would also be a solid choice. Chet & Mark together were brilliant! No doubt you've heard their 1990 CD "Neck and Neck". Excellent stuff!
DE ...
I remember hearing Sam Bush on a couple of Dave Grisman's albums years ago, also featuring the amazing Tony Rice. I seem to recall that Bush had/has great chops on both bass and mandolin ... terrific choice!

Yessirree ... that's a beautiful instrument, MKD!
Thanks for the explanation about the 12-fret design ... makes perfect sense. The only song I play where a shorter fretboard might be an obstacle is "Up the 'Pool" by Jethro Tull. Anderson plays it capoed at the 7th fret, and the first chord in the intro is an F played using a D-shape at the 12th feet ... could be a tight squeeze.
Seriously though, that's a heck of a fine guitar!

I thought this could be fun ...
If you could put together a 5-piece "dream team" ensemble of your favorite musicians, who would they be? Here would be my line up (with their most notable groups) if it was possible to have them all in their prime:
Drums: Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree)
Bass: Tony Levin (King Crimson)
Guitar: Steve Hackett (Genesis)
Keys: Rick Wakeman (Yes)
Vocals: Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)
Hope a lot of you submit your dream team ... should be real interesting.

Jethro Tull "Pibroch (Cap in Hand)" 1977
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1LYUTDGwWY
I searched in vain for quality live version of this one, but none of them do the studio version justice. This song has a bunch of various song genres all in one, hence the name "pibroch". The dramatic guitar intro still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. The album cover also had a neat back cover photo, perfectly suited to the album's title:
"Pibroch, Piobaireachd or Ceòl Mòr is an art music genre associated primarily with the Scottish Highlands, that is characterised by extended compositions with a melodic theme and elaborate formal variations. Strictly meaning "piping" in Scottish Gaelic, piobaireachd has for some four centuries been music of the Great Highland Bagpipe.[1] Music of a similar nature, predating the adoption on the Highland pipes, has historically been played on the wire-strung Gaelic harp (clarsach) and later on the Scottish fiddle, and this form is undergoing a revival."

Re: Kanye West Is An Idiot (8 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I'm just not a fan of Kanye West's genre as a whole.
HipHop isn't based much on musicianship, although there may be some good musicians in the genre. HipHop does have some creativity to it, but it is more based on sound sampling/editing, lyrics, and performance. I also find a lot of the HipHop themes either irrelevant to my way of life, or offensive to my values.
I'm a musician, so the music will always come first ... 'nuff said.

Re: Two hand tapping and sixteenth note. (8 replies, posted in My local band and me)
Great stuff!
Emmett Chapman supposedly discovered tapping in 1969, and invented the "Chapman Stick" in the early 70's which was based on this technique. Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel) and Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report) were early users. Levin now has a band called "Stick Men", which is just himself, another stick user, and a drummer. It is generally noted that the first time tapping was used on a recording was by Genesis' guitarist Steve Hackett on their 1971 album, Nursery Cryme.
Herman Li, Bernhard Beibl, and Eddie Van Halen are very good "tappers" also. Here's a sample from "Stick Men":

Re: New Amp Speakers Day! (9 replies, posted in Electric)
Thanks, Roger ...
They have a "Tone Chart" which describes the sound dynamics of each one:
https://wgs4.com/sites/default/files/WGS-2015-01-tonechart.pdf
So the ET65 scoops low at the midrange, while the Veteran 30 does the opposite ... best of both worlds. Marshall does the same thing in their JVM210C amp (also a 100-watt, 2 x 12" amp), by pairing a Celestion Vintage 30 with a Celestion Heritage. That was the way they explained it to me, and my ears confirm it. In their words from their website:
"Possibly the best WGS speaker combination we can recommend is the ET65 paired with a Veteran 30™. Your cabinet will sound more full and colorful than you ever imagined."

Re: unwanted noise (3 replies, posted in Acoustic)
There's several ways to make the neck of a guitar smoother, so sweaty palms aren't sticking & squeaking against the wood. I find the simplest solution is to spray a little Armour All on a soft cloth, and wipe the back of the neck once in a while. It's a water-based product, so no oils or thick films are going to gum things up.

Topic: New Amp Speakers Day! (9 replies, posted in Electric)
My new speakers for my amp were in the parcel bin when I arrived home today, and they're now installed in my Peavey and working great:
The original Peavey ValveKing speakers were "floppy" sounding in the bottom end. The folks at Warehouse Guitar Speakers recommended a non-identical pairing of their Veteran 30 (equivalent of a Celestion Vintage 30), and their ET65 (equivalent of a Celestion G12-65). Great suggestion! The combo gives a full, clean sound as well as lots of tight, low-end growl. And the best part is the WGS speakers cost about half of what the Celestion counterparts do. I expected an improvement, but didn't realize just how much better my amp would sound.
Check them out at http://wgs4.com/ .
