I once had a fella tell me to sing a simple song like Home On the Range and just sing it without the guitar and when ending the song just strum a chord that is in the same key as you ended the song. So I just tried it and strummed a G chord , nope and a C nope  D and A and the A sounded pretty good so I started doing a lot of songs in A .

Now I move my capo around or try transposing to different keys till I find what's best for me.

I don't think you can judge a guitar line by some of their entry level guitars. I have played lots of taylors , martins, gibson's , alvarez yairi's and lots of others. I have played some stand out models in each line and it all comes down to finding one that talks to you.

The more I have played and listened I would rather buy a Crafter, Blueridge, Recording King or others made in China solid wood guitars than a entry level Martin or Taylor laminate guitar, Solid wood guitars have the sound I'm after,

for my style I much prefer Martins, I have yet to play a Taylor I would consider buying smile  Gibson's another story I am gassing bad for one !

The nice thing about the Gator it seems to be as tough as a hardshell case. It looks like gig bag but it's more like a fabric covered hard case. I wanted a tough case with shoulder straps and I really like it so far.

Here's  is one I purchased recently, it has a lot of strorage and it has lots of foam padding to protect the guitar. It is a little more expensive $ 65.00 but I wanted good protection and the shoulder straps so I could jump on my motorcycle without strappin the guitar on. The pocket in front stores my binder with songs perfect.

I owned the same model for a few years and I settled on Elixir Polywebs 12-53 and it sounded very good.

I love Martin strings on my Martin,

I have a guitar with me, oh if I didn't this would have been a long trip. I am just missing all my gadgets at home and my family.
When you get a chance to try this song let me know what key is good for you and your voice and I will work on the pickin in the key of your choice smile

No reunion yet , I was just able to use a good internet hook up and listen to your vid. I am in a motel for 2 days and training at our main office in Artesia New Mexico. Then 2 more days in the field and then home again.

I am gonna take a scenic route home through Sante Fe , Durango Colo. , up to Craig Colo and then amble my way back to Gillette. I miss my toys almost as much as Lizzie. Almost that is smile

Please give Tecumseh Valley a lot of listens, I would like to send a guitar track and have you do the lead vocal and I will try and do the backup similar to this,  Chase will do acoustic lead and Lance on Bass. I think it could be a really GOOD ONE !

Heya Amy,

I am proud of you, that is a very tough song and has a tempo that is really tough to pull off. You are doing so well smile

Here is a song we will do when we get together some day. It is easy to play and you could sing it like an angel. A Townes Van Zandt song " Tecumseh Valley"    here's Nancy playing it so nicely.

Pete,

The 2 guitars are very different when you play them. At the time the HD-28 was the sound I was after. I am saving for a J-45 type guitar and it is kinda hard to find places to try them. My wife and I are gonna go out to Bozeman in the future and have a look around and play some gibbies.

I sure wasn't saying the HD-28 is a better guitar it took a 5 hrs of playing and decision making for me to make my decision. I am undecided about going for an old 50's model J-45 or a new one. I have a friend that has a 50's J-45 and it is one of the best sounding guitars I have ever heard. One strum and you know it is the J-45 with the beautiful voice. I would try and play one if possible I thought they varied some in tone.

Howdy Amy,

I would love to have a listen and see how you're doing but. I am away from home and our internet service is not good on location. I am currently overseeing the drilling of a horizontal oil well near Hobbs, New Mexico. I have been here about 8 days and have about a week left.

I will give it a listen when I get home, Lizzie knows how you feel. I just got a text message "Missing U"  might be another love song. Can't wait to hear your recording smile

Howdy Pete,

I was on my way to buy a J-45 when I bought my HD-28. I don't have any regrets but I still am going to buy a Gibson. I have a masterbilt epi but it is not a Gibson. Yes it sounds nice and has a nice action and is a solid wood guitar but you only go around once , my advice is spoil yourself , you deserve it.

Lets see Pix , I am counting on my toes this time  Bb, B, C , C# , D  thats five. Gosh darn it I shoulda stuck with my tuner instead of trying to agree with Pete. I am blaming him for my discombobulated state smile

Yes that's a better answer Pete, smile    No I guess not I know you meant the 2nd string from the top, it would be 5th string 7th fret

Don't know if you are playing a G chord in your progession or not but if you are most folks play some form of G chord at the fifth fret when playing in drop D a standard G chord won't work.

With a built in tuner just tune your top 6th string down until it shows you a D and you are good to go.

It is so sad isn't it ? Seems we all are touched by someone in trouble. You are so right some folks don't have a choice.

Thanks Jody,

This is one that just popped in and I think it was probably the sound of all the music in the air. I am still working on the arrangement but it's coming along. I am hoping to have a bass and lead guitar player help me on this one. I don't write songs very often but when a couple lines just come out of nowhere I write them down smile

Youtube was doing some maintenance this morning and it was tough to get through but it seems to be working now.

Jalan Crossland band has a new cd out and it is very good. Jalan plays lead and rhythm guitar and banjo. Shaun Kelly plays bass and Andy Phreaner on drums. The name of the CD is Driftwood Souls , I won't post a link but a google search will take you to Jalan's website.

Anne and Pete Sibley, don't have a new one out this year but their last CD Coming Home is very good. They also have a website.

Hope, this doesn't come across as spam, these are just some great musicians and very nice folks that I get to see several times a year and deserve a lot of listeners.

Strans I posted some vids in the Acoustic section, Pete is playing an openback 5 string banjo and is playing clawhammer style.
I really like the way he plays and I am looking at banjos smile

StranSongs wrote:

I suppose my experience of the banjo is from Irish Trad sessions when the banjo and fiddle tend to drown out everything else. Mind you I almost bought an open back tenor a year or so ago. It's tuned the same as the mandolin that I play.

look forward to the vids.

Hello,

Lizzie and her sister Shelly and I attended the Bighorn Mountain Festival over the weekend and we took in the acoustic workshop and they talked about songwriting and harmony singing also. We sat in the front row and the workshops are always a great way to get to get a up close look and listen. They have several buildings on the gounds and do the workshops indoors. The musicians there are always very helpful and answer questions and give some tips and tricks.
I was videoing with my little Q3 recorder and I didn't have a tripod so I had it resting on my knee to keep it steady. I just tried to keep it aimed in the right direction, so it isn't always centered up. The audio is pretty good though.

Anne and Pete Sibley moved out to Wyoming about 6 yrs ago and were both classical musicians and got a breath of the open country out west and started writing songs about the west and I guess they are Bluegrass , folk or something like that. Last year they won the Great America Duet contest by Praire Home Companion in NYC.

Jalan Crossland has been making a living playing since he was a boy and has been the rock and roll route and country. He is considered Bluegrass by some but has taken some heat cause he has a drummer in his band. He has one of the best live acts I have ever seen. He is the pride of Ten Sleep, Wy. His bass player is Shaun Kelly and he has been playing in bands all his adult life also. I believe he played with the Georgia Satellites.

There is some banjo playing on these vids and it is done nicely. Pete plays an open back banjo and plays clawhammer style and Jalan plays mostly resonators banjos but he really knows how to control his also without overpowering the others.

I put these in the order they played them and I just thought I would share them, I really enjoyed them but I have been following them for the past 6 yrs. This workshop was at 10:00 in the morning so they were all up a little earlier than usual for a performance.
