New format works fine for me  - I didn't see the option to switch back.

Thanks Phill and thanks for the comparison to Burl Ives. He was a great folk artist and actor. You took me back, thinking about all his works.

Thanks Phill and Jim. This one came to me pretty easy. I usually find it tough to come up with the music once I have the words but not the other way around. And some days both are difficult.

This song started with a tune that I was playing around with this morning. Then I added the words and tweaked with the music, adjusting here and there until I was done. I think the words aptly describe how I write many of my songs, or at least this song. This song title, Writing as I Move My Lips. came to me from what I caught myself doing today (and put into the lyrics), trying to get the rhythm fixed in my head as I was fitting the words to my music.

Writing as I Move My Lips By Jeff Gilpin

~~~~~~~~
Intro  - strumming Am
~
[Am]Sitting by my lonesome, [F]looking [C]’round.
[G]Listening to the house making [C]house like [G]sounds.
[Am]Thinking to myself, “What [F]should I [C]do be[G]fore this [F]day is [Am]through?”
~
[Am]Forceful are the habits [F]in my [C]head,
[G]Directing the path to [C]which I’m [G]led.
[Am]I’m just sitting here and [F]writing [C]down the [G]thoughts in my [F]head turning [Am]round.
~
[C]Words flow to my [G]fingertips,
[C]Tapping out the letters as I [E]move my lips.
[Am]Capturing the thoughts that [F]come my [C]way, be[G]fore they’re [F]gone to [Am]stay.
~
[Am]I don’t think my thoughts are [F]all that [C]grand,
[G]Floating here and there but re[C]fusing to [G]land.
[Am]Maybe if I stay and [F]write them [C]all [G]they’ll make [F]sense before they [Am]fall.
~
[Am]I try not to guide the [F]way I [C]think,
[G]Water flowing into a [C]kitchen [G]sink.
[Am]I don’t analyze or [F]cut them [C]down, [G]swimming [F]trying not to [Am]drown
~
[C]Words flow to my [G]fingertips,
[C]Tapping out the letters as I [E]move my lips.
[Am]Capturing the thoughts that [F]come my [C]way, be[G]fore they’re [F]gone to [Am]stay.
~
[C]Looking inside [G]looking out,
[C]Looking at the world as it [G]screams and shouts,
[C]I’m not really worried which [G]way I flow
Until I [F]get to the end of an[E]other begin.
~
[Am]Putting down my words in a [F]virtual [C]space.
[G]Reading them all out but with[C]out much [G]haste.
[Am]I put little edits [F]there and [C]here [G]as the [F]end come [Am]near.
~
[Am]I put down my writing [F]when it’s [C]done.
[G]Subject’s not so serious, a [C]little [G]fun.
[Am]Sewing up my words with a [F]somber [C]tune, [G]only to [F]end too [Am]soon.
~
[C]Words flow to my [G]fingertips,
[C]Tapping out the letters as I [E]move my lips.
[Am]Capturing the thoughts that [F]come my [C]way, be[G]fore they’re [F]gone to [Am]stay.
~
I wrote this one this past weekend. I've been convalescing after a little "procedure" made me have to refrain from exercising for a little while, but I am back on my feet getting my wind back. I also made the mistake of not playing enough when I wrote it to remember how it goes. So as soon as I do remember and I'm able to perform it properly, I promise to record and post it on my Soundcloud page.  In the meantime feel free to try it out on your own if you like and let me know what you think. It's kind of folky like many of my songs if that helps.
Verse chords Em – G D – Em – G D Em – Chorus Chords – D Em – G D - Em – G D Em
~
To [Em]lose is to gain
Lose your [G]anger lose your [D]pain
[Em]Then begin again
[G]Then be[D]gin a[Em]gain [D]
~
I [Em]set upon a path I know
On a late summer's [D]day
The [G]skies were cloudy overcast
But I [D]thought it’d be okay
I was [Em]geared for frugality
To keep my burden [D]light
The [G]hike would be a short one
And I’d [D]try with [G]all my [Em]might
~
To lose is to gain
Lose your anger lose your pain
Then begin again
Then begin again
~
‘Twas my first in a long while
I was recovering
A minor illness kept
The wind from my wings
But I held my resolve
And back on my feet I climbed
To start a new beginning
And to catch back up with time
~
To lose is to gain
Lose your anger lose your pain
Then begin again
Then begin again
~
A sprinkle felt from time to time
But it never soaked me wet
I kept my feet a moving
On my journey tryin’ to get
Tryin’ to get me back upon my feet
And put the past behind
‘Cause life is life that’s what it is
And all you’ve got is time
~
To lose is to gain
Lose your anger lose your pain
Then begin again
Then begin again
~
My journey was a short one
But a step upon my path
To lead to where it led me
For my reward or wrath
I made to the other side
No prize for me await
Just the prize to keep on going
As I tried to remake.
~
To lose is to gain
Lose your anger lose your pain
Then begin again
Then begin again
~
My lesson was an easy one
That I already knew
But needed the reminding
Like the tying of my shoe
When life knocks you down at times
You can lay down and die
Or get yourself back up again
And give it another try
~
To lose is to gain
Lose your anger lose your pain
Then begin again
Then begin again
Good luck in the competition.
Jim
p.s.   do you have to change your profile quote to Washington Football team now ? smile
Thanks Jim - Competition went well (all my songs from the challenge are on my new youtube page I posted in the Recording forum), and I recommend it to you and the other songwriters here when the next one rolls around. If you check out the SongFancy FaceBook group they'll let you know all the details. No cost and mainly for challenging yourself.
You know, I hadn't thought of that until now but I guess you're right...quote change coming...just have to remember how to do it. smile
Here is a song I wrote getting ready for the songwriting challenge I participated in. I wrote quite a few and the ones from the challenge and one other prep song are on my YouTube site (link posted in the Recording Forum). Hey All,
I added a YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsaKw_ … 0aTszRhVzA). I was using it for a FaceBook songwriting challenge 5 songs in 5 days and the song recordings are still a rough cut primarily for folks to get an idea of how the song goes. Those songs are up there in video format along with one other that I wrote to practice for the competition. Not trying to get snooty, but just trying to push myself to get better. I didn't want to flood the songwriting forum with all these new songs, but if you want feel free to stop by and hear them. I'll make sure the music's (words & chords) there in chordpro format if anyone wants to try them out.
V/R,
Jeff G/jets60
Hey Jim - I like it and think this will sound great. I like that you used the blues style too, a bit different from your other songs. I'll give it a try as soon as I get off work, but I'm looking forward to hearing how you play it as well.
I enjoyed that you two. Next time Phill and I do a song together I think I am going to leave the mixing to whoever did this one. Candy Shop was well written and well performed. You two make a great team.
Thanks Phill - Yes - That is what I was writing about for the most part. This song is taking some time. I'm not normally a power chord guy so I'm getting more comfortable with power chords prior to recording.
I was playing around with power chords this morning and decided to use them in this song. Not a COVID song this time but still a song about what we all are going through, but from my perspective.
In Times Like These By Jeff Gilpin – 6/7/2020
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here are the power chords I used to play it but feel free to switch to whatever chord you prefer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A5=57XXXX D5=X57XXX E5=X79XXX D#=X68XXX
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Intro

A5 | D5 A5| E5 D#5 D5| A5 E5|

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~
Verse 1
[A5]I’ve never been one to speak my mind
[D5]For the whole wide world to [A5]see,
But in [E5]time like these
I’ve got to [D#5]put it [D5]out there,
In times like [A5]these. [E5]
~
Verse 2
You see I’m just [A5]me, just what you see.
It took me [D5]years to get here [A5]too,
To times like [E5]these.
I [D#5]made it [D5]here
To times like [A5]these. [E5]
~
verse 3
I don’t [A5]pretend to know what it’s like
To have a [D5]different face from [A5]me
In times like [E5]these.
[D#5]I’m just [D5]me
In times like [A5]these. [E5]
~
Verse 4
But it [A5]hurts me to see that some of my friends
Live in a [D5]different world from [A5]me.
Yet it’s the [E5]same world but
With a [D#5]different [D5]free,
Different for every[A5]body. [E5]
~
Bridge
I [D5]won’t pretend and tell you that I know what it’s like,
Just [A5]like no one has lived my life,
But [D5]that doesn’t mean my hurt’s not real now.
It’s just a [E5]different kind of hurt. So different than so many others feel. [D5] [A5]
~
Verse 5
So I’m [A5]just going to try and understand
How it [D5]is and how I hope it eventually will [A5]be
From [E5]times like these
For [D5#]you and [D5]me
To how I want it to [A5]be. [E5]
~
Verse 6
I want to live in a [A5]world where I can say
That we [D5]all are treated equal[A5]ly.
That’s the [E5]way I want it to be
For [D#5]every[D5]body.
The way I wish it [E5]were now, in times like these. [A5]
