The website admin has had legal copyright problems and has had to remove/block some songs.  Here's a link to a thread with some more information.  It's not necessarily the answer you're looking for, but a discussion of what's been happening with that issue.  Apparently the code placed to block the appropriate parties is a little haphazard, as a lot of folks in the US have noticed being blocked from time to time.  I'd suggest trying again, or checking out some of the other links given.  Maybe try without logging in, try again with logging in... or my BEST guess is that you need to edit your TIME ZONE.  I'm not sure how admin has the code written, but I'll guess it has to do with time zone!  smile

WOW, those certainly are some stunning photos Zurf!  I have some beauties laying around from our camping trips as well, but none as beautiful as those.  I must say, that bald eagle sure is a possible winner (although I love the simplicity of the photo of your godson as well... him and nature, nothing better than THAT)!

baja100 - welcome to chordie!  While this site is primarily for the stringed instruments, I'm not sure you're going to get a lot of help.  However, there are some musicians on here that play some brass and woodwinds so it's possible.  Good luck!

It's all very true, how unique and lucky we are to have been placed in this magical place called "earth" where every little atom works together to allow us life.  Don't forget too that without light, we would have no color.... why is the sky blue?  Because it is primarily made of oxygen which refracts blue light (it sure isn't blue at night without light to refract off of it).  The color comes up with the sun!

I think your question is begging for a discussion on religion ... so I'm going to leave that portion of it alone.  I had some other things to say as well, but again they lead to discussions on religion.  Tricky... and interesting at the same time.  Each time a question hasn't been answered scientifically it has been answered religiously.

Reminder to those posting:  "Topics that become arguments over Religion and/or Politics will be closed or deleted."   - have fun with this, just please remember to respect each others different opinions!  smile  And with that... I shall bow out of this discussion for now.

Hi Paul and welcome to Chordie!  Yes, everyone here is really quite friendly, supportive, and helpful.  Music lovers helping one another out.  Glad to see you've jumped right in and commented... keep it up and be sure to read the stickies at the top of each section.  I'll send you an email so as not to hijack Jim's thread with "rules"!  wink

big_smile  Ha ha ha!  I was thinking the same things.  Two peas in a pod there you guys are!  What a lovely place to relax though in a nice sun room on the lake.  It makes me wish everything was already in order here so we could just pack up the belongings we love and head south for good!  Thanks for sharing the pictures with us guys!

Oh Pix that was painful in deed to listen to!  LOL!  It was pretty similar to a bad night at karaokie.  Hey, everyone had fun and that's what counts right?  right?  right?  lol

I go back and forth between my nylon and steel stringed guitars.  Although they're both guitars, to me they are two completely different instruments.  They feel different, they sound different, they look different.  I've always wanted to learn piano too.  As for having the feeling to just jump up and grab one of them and play... ALL THE TIME... I don't know how many times I've been doing something "important" and thought to myself "I'd rather be playing my guitar".  (I need THAT tattoo next I think)

YAY PapaTom!  That's exciting news for sure!  Back into the music field after years as a suit will surely be a nice "relaxing" job for you.  Those sound like some big names to be visiting "The Island" ... although I do recall when I was driving around your area last year, I saw that a lot of the towns do some pretty big things for their locals in the parks.  That's awesome for you.  It sounds like it'll be a blast getting to reconnect with folks you haven't seen in a while.

Mark big congrats and cudos!  You've earned your rights to be in a band out playing gigs and having a blast doing what you love!  AWESOME!

I had myself "stuck" at a small campfire in the dark.  No chance of seeing music, and can hardly see the fretboard or dots to know what fret I'm on.  Really... all I could see were the strings.  THAT sure made a difference with the "can you play" issue.  I can only play two songs well this way.  I can play a few more without seeing music but need to see my strings.  With music and lyrics then I'm better.  So this weekend before the fire I said something about having my guitar with me.  I was asked, "OH you play??" and I answered... "just a little".  Then my husband chimes in with how great I am, and I stop him and look like I'm just being modest.  Really, there's a lot to be said for those that DON'T play and their opinions (just a little is a lot to someone who plays none or can't get through an entire song).

So Nomikal... right now my answer is "I play guitar, but just a little".  big_smile  I guess when I can play a bunch of songs blindly then maybe I'll feel more comfy saying "I play guitar a bit" smile  and I agree with Roger and Zurf... it won't be until I feel that I'm good enough to possibly get paid to play before I'd say "Heck YEAH I play guitar!"

Sounds like you guys had a great time!  Cudos to you both for finding a little time to get away from everything and just jam with the guitars and a little bourbon!  smile  Zurf, that almost sounds like a little vacation within the vacation!

Hi Roger... congrats on the NGD (new guitar day) with the new Martin.... and the new preamp system.  I don't know anything about the amps, just wanted to hop in and say YAY for you! Happy days!  I'm sure some of the other guys will chime in on their thoughts on amps for you.

Excellent job on that one Steve!  I don't know the song, although it sounds familiar.  Left you a comment on YouTube!

Just wanted to stop in and say... WELCOME to the forums Bougie!  There's some discussion on playing songs with two guitarists... one not using a capo and another using a capo... all playing the same thing in the end!  You might want to try that with a song or two you guys both already know!

Steve... the first song I learned to play was "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (3 chords)... Then I learned "Tom Dooley" (2 chords) ... I'm just now moving up to more current songs like "Bubbly".  Oldies are always good!  What you play doesn't necessarily mean you're old (although sometimes I FEEL old, I'd like to believe early 30's is still kinda young smile)!

Plank Spanker, check out these two threads on Chordie:

Your question got me going, and there were a few other members with capo questions and such as well.  There's a few charts in there for you to look at so you know what's happening when you use your capo!  smile

Al... it's the simple things in life that make everything better!  You must be a good one!  big_smile

That's a nice chart there NELA!  More in depth than mine!  So, on that other thread I also learned that when you capo say an A7 or Am shape lets say on the 2nd fret you're going to get a B7 or Bm ... so just follow that down with the conversion to figure out your minors and 7ths as well!  An E shape capo on the 5th fret is an A... so an E7 shape will be an A7 and an Em shape will be an Am ... sweet huh?

Detman... think you can figure this out now for your song?  Did this all answer your questions?  smile

Fantastic Stonebridge!  Thank you!  NOW I understand why that one guy on youtube is always doing the "how to's" with a capo... and I love him even more now that I get it!  Although it's a leap to get theory down, I really think leaning this is going to help me a LOT with my theory and comprehending bar chords etc.  It's funny how the oddest things seem to help make things click in my head.

BTW... NELA put a capo chart up in this thread (with the help of Jeff) http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=15072
for anyone that wants to see yet another version of a capo chart.  It has all the same things as mine, but up to the 12th fret and includes sharp chord conversions.  Also, it's not too big.

If you're playing the E shape with the capo on the 2nd fret, you were actually playing an F#

I don't know much theory DM... but I just figured this capo stuff out today!  LOL!
There's a chart here I made up today (along with a link to a more in depth one I found on another site):  http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=14925

You are right!  Whoopppps!  All that going back and forth between looking at piano keys and thinking of notes and fretboards messed me right up.  I thought something was off with my whole half conversion!  THANK YOU!  Ok... if anyone wants me to fix that, I will and will upload it again.  Otherwise I think I'm printing this puppy as it seems the actual chart end of it is correct (take your black marker out and remember to black out my goof in the whole/half on the bottom and ignore that color change - it's from E-F and B-C ONLY).

What about capos and minors and 7ths?

Oh... and if anyone wants something bigger - try this out for your printing cheating needs (almost wish I'd have found this sooner - I don't need the chord charts, but it's going into my "theory book" too anyway):  http://www.halfhill.com/cheatsheet.gif

Ever since I saw this, and a discussion on another thread... I had a plan to make myself a cheat sheet (I wish I could just find the one Crevs is referring to instead though!!!)

So, I want to know if I have done this accurately?
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_44cV0eprJ94/TAVAYheCGDI/AAAAAAAAAFo/aWWYqfvtEco/capocheatPic.JPG

I put the half changes in there to try to remind myself ... I'm sorry if it doesn't make a TON of sense to everyone!  I realize we don't generally play a Gflat, but technically it is the same as an F# so on and so forth with other notes.

Also, if you're playing an Em and you capo on the 5th fret, are you then playing an Am in the Em shape?  What about E7 capo on 5th is that an A7?  Are the minors and 7th's truly as simple as open shaped chords when you add a capo?  Thanks in advance for the help in figuring this out!

I know it's a small step in music theory, but it feels enormous for me to KNOW what I'm playing rather than just listen to others say "put a capo and play this and it'll sound right"!  smile

That was far too simple Alvee... now I feel stupid for even saying it... BUT... I could make my own cheat sheet now so I don't have to think so much!  I keep forgetting it's just like a piano keyboard (it's the only way I can remember where those darn notes are!)  THANK YOU!

I know what I'm going to do today!

I love to see all the different styles out there!  That girl was amazing Pix!  Once upon a time we'd call those "piano fingers" ... but new meaning to a wide finger stretch is now born!  AMAZING!  I'm amazed by Richie Havens style there too... whatever works!
