My advise: surf, surf surf on the web, and sooner or later you'll find at least something.
If you own the record of take that, there are programs on the web, freeware, or trials, who are able to transpose the song into chords. Try google, transposing mp3 songs to chords

I can't figure it out, I have a stash of good acoustics, and I am not intended to change those items, unless...
I did read an article that more and more acoustic players go back to the roots, meaning playing and performing, far enough from your amp to avoid not desired noises.(feedback)
- What is the best solution, I have 1 martin provided with an electro-acoustic device.
- 1) I know it is not so cheap to put a piezo element in your guitar, and I DON'T PERFORM, but I like a crystal clear sound, even using an amp. So on a rainy day I purchased 2 microphones. I can put them in front of the soundhole, or near, in fact where ever I want. It works fine, but I don't use it a lot, because I play alone (mostly) 3/4 of my playtime acoustic and 1/4 electric.
- 2) Put elements in my acoustics, or at least in some guitars, using good pick-ups.
Can somebody give me advise concerning this problem, I am sure I am not alone:
- SIMPLE, GOOD WORKING MICROPHONES and placed in a way to avoid feedback.
- INSTALLING PICK-UPS in MY ACOUSTIC GUITARS, .
BOTH TO PLAY ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC.
WHO CAN GIVE ADVISE ABOUT THIS TOPIC, I AM SURE NOT ALONE WITH THIS ITEM

The best way to test a guitar is to plug it in and compare guitarbrands that way. Don't forget, I have got the staggs to try, they sound pretty good. They were electric, and you really DON'T HEAR A DIFFERENCE USING EFFECTS AND DISTORTION, but acoustics???? My best acoustic is a GIBSON SJ-200 MONTANA GOLD, have a MARTIN HD-28 and a D-45V, the HD-28 plays twice as loud as the D-45

Probably, I am born in 1955, so I think we played already a lot of "airguitar" before the word was born. It was fun, because a lot of people, especially girls were impressed, and you me and others we had the feeling to be stars, who demonstrated their "(air)guitarskills on the dancefloor. It is fun. I hope to get a lot of answers

I use what I have, mostly it are MARTIN strings, and personnally I prefer the ultralights, even hitting your strings hard, will become easy. In the beginning, I used thicker strings, but my fingers didn't agree, but if you take time and be careful, you start getting careful after a while, you can keep your strings complete.
- BUT WHEN IS IT TIME TO CHANGE STRINGS
- HOW LONG ARE STRINGS GOOD, NOT USING THEM YET, SO STILL UNPACKED?

In fact I had absolutely NO INTENTION to mention this, it was only when posting that I saw the result. I wrote this with the intention to delete, because I know NADA, NOTHING about US politics, and this is still a GUITAR FORUM. So WHY? I tried to place everything in a certain CONTEXT, not speaking about "racial" items. There are maybe racists among us, but just look to the RWANDA genocide: black versus black. I had or have absolutely no intention to point a finger. I love everybody and I still believe in the goodness of mankind.
My purpose was, that if you follow the evolution the last 50 years, you can not tell like our folks did: in my time everything was better. We achieved more in 30 years than what people achieved in 300 years, that is the truth. That is also why I called it PING PONG.
Isn't it strange that US music made first a kind of tour around the world, REdiscovered by people like John Mayall, and his "cultivated" guitarists like Peter GREEN, CLAPTON, BECK, Mick TAYLOR and many more, like groups going from the Beatles, over the Animals and Stones to bring back the US music where it all started? I wrote this because in those days (early sixties) it was like I wrote. I just wanted to add that with all the communication technics the world is 1 street long. Now we are able to plug a guitar in a small device like BOSS BR MR, record a few tracks with at least 200 bass and drumpatterns, you put it on tape, using webcam, and there you are on sites like MYSPACE or YOUTUBE, this is incredible but true. And I believe this is just the beginning.
More I even think that if you practise your skills, and take 26 is the good one, you can give people a taste of your music, and maybe sell your stuff, or album just using your talent, skills and time. Will recordcompanies still be NEEDED???? My humble opinion is that if they don't change their attitude, the artist(s) can find themselves in a situation to sell, negotiate directly with the customer, meaning people who like what you do, who can even give a kind of comment to improve. ISN'T THIS AMAZING. SO SORRY, IF I OFFENDED SOMEONE, I WILL NEVER DO THIS ON PURPOSE. Thanks for reaction man.

Well UPYERKILT, as legal heir of the American TRONE, at this moment living bannished in Belgium, I owe you and your team a lot. AM I GLAD the day I discovered this site. When I was at first a "junior member" I have seen the number of members increasing. It must be a hell of a job, you have: is this your fulltime job? Because I think to control and guide this site, I can just find a few words: SUPERJOB, nothing is too much, and if there is 1 "lousy" problem, or 1 stupid question,( I always say there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers) you try to solve it, or at least you get a decent answer.
I used to be Medical Doctor, but I told it already, got a unbelievable car crash, hitting FRONTAL a tree who crossed the road. Never lost conscience, good for me because they would send me to another hospital, and I had 32 fractures in my left foot: LOGICAL TREATMENT was amputation, but in the hospital, which I could choose, not being unconscieus, they SAVED my foot, operation 3 WEEKS later, because too ugly and bad. I also had an exploded vertebra in my lower back (in 5 pieces, and one piece pushes against my spinal chord) provocing a paralysis. I started again parcatising 10 months later agains advise, and I , hoping to continue for a few years, had to stop. That experience as a doctor helped me a lot, concerning questios people asked, because we are always intended to say, just because it is so obvious for us, that people ask silly question. I had 1 priority, if someone asks you something, even if he asks where his nose is, he deserves a decent answer, because he asked something he wanted to know. So in that same hospital, considered as the best in EUROPE, especially for heartsurgery and neurosurgery, they also didn't an intervention concerning that verteber. I LIVE, AND MY LIVING STYLE HAS CHANGED 100%, cliché: YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE. But I am dependant of so many little things, and I can not accept what I have, I just HAD to stop practising, too much pain and suffering, loosing conscience in a patients house, more and more and especially when the end of the week was coming, the verdict was, I knew it already months before, STOP. You know that in 2006, after the 6th intervention, hoping that everything would go better (a real miscalculation) I was even accepted as captain, senior officer of the medical equipe on a cruise boat, but they had the right to contact my fysicians and it was ZIP at last. Sorry for this long story, but I am able now, because I don't work to share all info I can, even here: never give up, everyday is another day.
I am one very happy guy who discovered by accident this site, and I can spend a long time here.
By the way what do you have to do to become moderator?

God's ways are "mysterious". People like Jimi Hendrix USA citizen, became famous when he went to Great-Britain.
But it is at least very mysterious that the blues, coming from the USA, became popular after being performed by English Players. I was told that the problem was caused by the, I talk about the sixties, blues and rock were BLACK PEOPLES MUSIC (don't take this as an offence please), and there were a lot of "charts", and radiostations, radiostations refusing to play that kind of music. We can't imagine NOW, how it was back than. We are so used to CD's, MP3, and all the music and songs you can show and hear, just by a click on the INTERNET. Before that there was television. I just want to say that 40-50 years ago, it was impossible to know what was really going on. A country, the same country, was 5000 miles away from other countries, and now, if the pope is farthing in Brazil, we will hear and see (not smell) it here almost at the same moment. The world became a small place. If our ancesters should return, we will be back in an inquisition period: I am still amazed sending a fax. You write something down here on a paper, you put that paper in a "kind of device" and 10.000 miles from here, another person reads what you wrote, same with email. If you start thinking about all this, you are loosing controle.
BUT back in the sixties, there was a kind of hype in England, they discovered those "blues records. Brian Epstein, the later and late manager of the beatles, sold records, imported from the USA, same, even more I should say, the rolling stones, together with Clapton, Page, Jeff Beck, all coming out from one "stable", like John Mayall, covered a lot of those songs, like the STONES classic, route 66, and so the original US music, returned to their country, wher they discovered the potential of the songs.
I do hope that you bring me your opinions and conclusions.
A very nasty remark: the SOUTH AFRICAN problem: the USA : big boycot against South Africa, concerning "apartheid" starting not even 20 years after black people had the right to vote in the USA. I don't know, but you do me a favour by discussing thiis point, especially because of the music "exceeding and trespassing" all the borders and bringing people TOGETHER. If I am a black man (IN my family my brother in law is coloured) and I like to have a drink with a gorgeous, super beautiful woman, in let's say ALABAMA, or GEORGIA, in a regular bar full of white people, is there still being, or do I still create a problem entering that bar with that kind of girl?

Who has experience with this kind of "playing".
I remember when I was a lot younger, we did similar things when we went to dance. Most fine memories, I have with STATUS QUO songs. Two guitarists, shaking with their heads while playing and you could see at least 20 people, playing on "nothing" (now it is called airguitar) and doing the same movements as Status Quoers: Parfitt and Rossi. The way they played and performed, we did it too, without an instrument. Same story when they started deep purple's "child in time." Those were the days, my best "airguitars are all sold now, but I use wooden airguitars now with strings.
I am so curious what people think about this phenomenon, did you do it too?
In several countries, they are having AIRGUITAR contests, mostly the winner gets a real guitar. But it is really funny to see this guys on television.
Please react, it is a weird subject.

I think it is a nice song, but the problem is, I CAN'T READ NOTES, but I think lot of people don't. For me, when I am playing, best example is a wellknown song, I need to have a tune in my head. Sometimes it really sucks, especially when I see a song, or better encounter a song with the letters A B C D E F G, because I, I mean WE, non professional "note-readers", must have the melody in our head. I don't know if this is the same in your case in the writing art of song(s). As far as my judgement is reaching, I love it, I agree with my fellow "chordians, lyrics are really beautiful and keep following your "feelings" DON'T LET OTHERS TELL YOU WHAT TO DO, but anyway, listen to them, and turn negative attitudes or remarks into positive. I think that I will  never be able to play or perform it, even if you put tablature, or notes.
I am more, a so called "leadguitarplayer", more an in-between ryth-lead, take a song from Creedence Clearwater Revival, play it on your cd player, and there you can really hear the difference between the way of playing like I explained. You hear quit clear the strumpattern of the rythmguitarist, in this case the late Tom Fogerty, and the lead guitar of John Fogerty, with his solos. I will not compare myself with neither Tom, neither John. I am a pretty good player, but even the best guitar players admire an other guitarist. I can only tell that the way I play is and this is only me speaking, more the structure of the song, so when I start playing, you will recognise the song, and this kind of playing goes together with some riffs and some licks. BUT I CAN NOT PLAY SOLO's WHO LAST FOR MINUTES. It is always very funny to enter a musicstore, by preference on a saturday, and to see dozens of people playing solos. Everybody tries to start with solos. Talking about playing, I have still a lot of practising, and before this, I was a Medical Doctor, who had to stop, because of severe sequels of a phenomenal car crash. I hit a tree driving 60 miles/hour: Statistically, I should have been DEAD, I did die too, but my ex-girlfriend saved my life, being allowed to stay at my side, because she is nurse. I never lost conscience, except from the dying part (WEIRD THING DYING), she yelled so hard that they could hear her 6 floors higher, but the brought me back, adrenaline shots, electric cardiac shocks. I restarted working 10 months later, having a different way to approach live, and this is one of the main reasons, I have a huge and nice guitarcollection. So my point was about how I play: I am a LONER, but for 200$ you have a splendid device, korg pandora 4..., having a lot of features, different amps, effects AND very if not most important, a rythmsection, bassloops and drums, you can even choose the key in playing, A --->G. Using this I started really to practise on licks and small solos, so far so good. So if you love writing, and I think you are gifted, practise a lot, hint: use a machine or device with a rythmsection. That section is the most important part in a musicgroup. You have to follow them, and not that they have to follow you.
I wish you a lot of succes with the songwriting. What kind of style do you play, ballads, pop, rock, gothic?

Starting a new day with a new topic.
I am convinced that now we are reaching the 100.000 members, there must be people who know a lot of royalties. When they speak of "royalties" we can start thinking by being ripped by the record company. But in fact all you hear is when GREAT and BIG groups (like John Fogerty and CCR) have problems, more with copywrights..
One sunny day: Michael Jackson, the new SANTA CLAUS, so concerned about kids ( HE HAS NEVER BEE A KID!!!!, so is he wrong: in his eyes NO damage done), acquiered for a very big amount of $$$$ the rights on the Beatles SONGS. Doe this mean tha "sir" Paul has to pay money to Michael to sing a song he wrote, does this also mean that when they play "yesterday" in the WALTON market, they pay money to Michael, and 0 zero zip to the beatles?

Can somebody give me a clue, on what base royalties are ASKED, about who get's WHAT.
You can give me the answers that "W. HOUSON, MARIAH CARREYH were paid a fortune to forfill a contract with a record companie. This is risky for all the concerned parties. You get 1.000.000.000$ to make 5 records in 5 years.
But take the example of Alanis Morissette, born in 1974, famous local in Canada, by playing theatre, even singing at big sports events. She had good looks, a good voice and was able to get a contract: 1,5$ on every sold record (seemed very high).
She has the worldrecord of having the most sold records for a "beginnersalbum).
NOW THE QUESTION: is there a fellow chordian who has experience with who gets what.
- performer: paid in $ from ???
- music or songwriter?
- arrangements?
I wanted to know more or less, how many $$$$ are earned, HAVING A STANDARD CONTRACT. Is the songwriter better paid than the lyric writer.
BEST WAY IS STARTING MAYBE WITH how much they earn on 100$, like 15% is than 15$.
I really hope to get answers on this topic, by seeing maybe different royalties, and of course THE MAKING AND RECORDING OF. A lot goes to the publisher, record company, "organic" things. I do know that printing CD's is not that expensive?Thank you all.

Hi CRAIG, I found on a peer to peer about 30 different songs, written and performed by SYD Barrett. They are just common songs. If this is the SYD BARRETT, there is nothing wrong for him, but he plays tune with weird names, some songs are Bob Dylanesque, meaning simple, easy melody, BUT NOT LONGER PINK FLOYD.

dear James
Thanks for answering. That is what's so good ON THIS FORUM. NOBODY ASKS "STUPID" QUESTIONS. I do agree when you get older, you know a LOT MORE, and the posed question looks mad, remember how we were back than between let's say 16 & 22 years old. MORE, we had to try everything out, and the choice in guitars was easier. You entered a store, if you tried a fender : STRAT or TELE, the tele was even cheaper in early seventies.
Gibson: les paul & SG and sometimes brands I don't recall.
It was NOT done to say I have a stratocaster or a gibson, like the cola now. PEPSI or COCA COLA

Dear cytania
I agree 100% with you, I call it the "no money to spend" syndrome. People buy a car for 2000$, and they put more than you think, for 5000$ extra a very loud soundsystem in it. I don't point or blame people. It is more the companies you should blame. Like you told, you see CLAPTON, with his "blackie" and a lot of people are still convinced that they will "play better" just by, buying, having and playing that specific guitar, same with the LES PAUL JIMMY PAGE, is THAT INSTRUMENT worth the price? Don't forget he is endorsed by GIBSON and it is 1 commercial businness, gibson wins, and the buyer, mostly a PAGE fan, is happy. It is a difficult matter

Not that I am a fan of somebody in particular, but as far as I am concerned, I have a HUGE admiration for songwriters, singers who make a song with no more than 4 chords.
Best example is BOB DYLAN, he has written songs, covered by hundreds, and rarely used more than 4 chords. For me one of his best albums is the soundtrack of "PAT GARRET & BILLY THE KID", containing also "Knocking on Heaven's Door". The whole record tells the story of Billy, and every song, using the same chords, is different.
Do you have other EXAMPLES of such (in my eyes) brilliant people, maybe Kris Kristofferson.

The Big Rockfestival is called ROCK WERCHTER. The guy who organised it, is now CEO, because an American Holding purchased it for a big $$$$$$$ price. It takes place in BELGIUM, go to EUROPE, and yes, that little spot over there is BELGIUM. You can check it out on the internet. BUT FOR ME fun is over since 1996, at first the festival was at 2 places, the same artists performed on the other saturday, and on sunday it took place where I was asked to be "the doc", and really those were the days. It is even so stupid and childish, because there are no more people backstage than needed, the press was somewhere else, and sometimes, they came backstage to do an interview. The organisator has a lot of credits in making a few little bands BIG. U2 became world famous, thanks to the festival and the time he put in U2, concerning other gigs, publicity. You are maybe VERY, SUPER GOOD, but you always need someone to cross the street. Same thing with REM. Look back 40 years ago, Jimi Hendrix was a very good player, and had a little fame in the USA, but it is only when he went to Europe, and there the "hype" started. The point of working at a festival like that is that there is a strict limit, NO PRESS, NO PEOPLE not belonging there. For us, who worked there, it was every year the same, we looked forward to see each other, speaking of no more than 10 people. The artists knew that too, and were at least acting as themselves, just regular guys from around the corner. You always have exceptions, and so it was absolute not unusual they started talking to you, and I assure, it feels strange that you are discussing with Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Mark Knopfler about the things of life. I tried to stand with my 2 feet on the ground, and I know a lot of medical problems and conditions of a lot of them, but you can think or tell whatever you want, soon or later you start "floating", and the energy and talent of these guys are affecting you. I would be a BIG LIAR if I told that I didn't care. And watching these groups playing (I was often in a corner on stage) is very contagious, you start feeling yourself as a star. I swear that standing there, watching 100.000 people with lights, and shouting, singing along is unbelievable. It is really a moment in life that is burned forever in your brain.

One item, I never find on the internet is: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE between a GIBSON SG with the same coils, but if you take a Gibson Menace, they speak about SMOKY COILS, with the same structure as grandfather SG, 490 495, or beat me, 490 498 standard coils, but 2x more expensive than the SG's with smoky coils? Is the difference, (and also, the price ) dependant of the way the coil is winded?

A question, that a lot of people ask: I like to use something to compare.
It is not possible to make from a donkey a racehorse: that is a fact (I had the pleasure to see a so called ZONKEY: father DONKEY, mother ZEBRA).
Like a LOOOT of people do: they buy a car for 2000$ and that car is entering a store for EXTRA TUNING, motor is more powerful, special tyres, other color... I just mention this because, and PERSONNALY I really think that it will cost you a lot of money, even going to a person who CAN construct guitars.
I buy let's say an EPIPHONE LP STANDARD, compared to his brother, cheap. BUT, than you want in fact playing the BIG guy, you surf and yes: you will find, especially on eBay, a Gibson Neck.: change necks. You are still left with your epiphone but with GIBSON NECK. You surf again, because there is nothing left  to be  in a hurry, because you OWN already an epiphone with gibson neck, but you want an upgrade again, so you look again on eBay, and yes, they sell gibson pick-ups for a reasonable price, take your creditcard, pay the seller, and start changing the humbuckers, replacing the epi's by gibsons.
At the end of all your work, you have a huitar who looks exactly like a Gibson. BUT WILL THE SOUND BE, and to see how the sound is, I always use my ACOUSTIC AMP, because of the range, and the sound, a good guitar will give you a crystal clear sound, NO EFFECTS USED, JUST PURE, LIKE YOU PLAY AN ACOUSTIC.
I just wanted to know, if you bring that guitar to a store (she will be still cheaper than the original LES PAUL STANDARD) if someone will hear the difference. I know that you can answer to purchase a Gibson LP Studio. THE ONLY THING I DON'T LIKE ON A GIBSON, compared with a Paul Reed Smith, is the fact that a GIBSON, correctly tuned, starts already to be "detuned" after 2 songs. PRS is still in tune after 1 year.

If you are an absolute beginner, the best advice I can give is
- learn the basic chords A  B  C  D  E  F  G
- Than practise this and start the minor versions: Am  Bm  Cm  Dm  Em  Fm  Gm
- PRACTISE again and start learning the 7th chords: A7  B7  C7  D7  E7  F7  G7.
Be glad at that moment, you just have about 21 different chords, and NOW you should be able to follow a lot easier. DO NOT PANIC, everyone who plays guitar here, went to the same process.
If people laugh, don't worry, ask them why, because if they give negative critics, try to translate them in positive critics.
After all these years, I am, despite they asked me a lot to play in a group, a quit good player, heard it from others, even from a pro, who has a studio in MISSISSAUGA, near TORONTO, writing songs for others, and writing music for publicity on television (he earns quit a lot by making music for publicity, he needs to eat, to give his kids a decent education, the kids are phenomenons, in singing harmony), he told me that, and at that time I was still working, I could easily play with the mainstream US bands, BUT I NEED A GOOD RYTHMSECTION, at this moment when I play alone (95%) and sometimes with a drummer, who is asked a lot to play a song in studios, drumming I mean, and he has always a very good influence on me, pointing me on my way of playing, more follow the rythm.
I hope I could help you somehow, and do not forget: PRACTISING is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, also having a musical ear, or put in your PC any song to play along. Start with tunes that are well known, like some songs of JOH?N DENVER

I think that songwriting on command is not "that" easy. They always tell that you need 10% inspiration and 90% transpiration.
The strangest story I've heard concerning songwriting is that on a "bright sunny day" Andrew Loog Oldham, at that time manager and more, of the ROLLING STONES, closed up JAGGER ANDF RICHARDS in a room, and they were only allowed to leave that room if they had enough songs.
My theory is that if everyone starts writing, which is still VERY POSSIBLE, you will discover "PEARLS" between a mot of rabbish. Second phase is, try to REMEMBER the tune. It is easier now, because of all songrecording devices, from small to big. A good one is for me BOSS MR BR 4 tracks and very small. Maybe somebody has a idea to fabricate a kind of device, size of a watch (without the material to put it around your wrist, and you can put it on every instrument. It absorbs the vibrations made by your instrument, you can let's say 5GB record on it, and with USB, present in your device, you are able to put the recordings on a PC, for extra working on it. Using a small kind of record device, you just stick it on an instrument of your choice, you play, it records. So the chance of, when playing alone and you have just found a superriff, a riff you are not able to recall, even 5 minutes later, the small device has the riff. FINISHED to get angry because you forgot the way you played it.
Rolling Stones again: BRIAN JONES, the REAL FOUNDER of the Rolling Stones, at that moment I wouldn't like to stand in his shoes. There are probably a lot of "personal reasons", he was the cute one, seeing how his group, neglected him, and being very talented as player, took all the credits.
Same with Harrisson, who was always aside, but wrote UNFORGETABLE songs, like "here comes the sun, while my guitar gently weeps and one of the best songs ever written, and covered SOMETHING. It has to be a nightmare: "georgieboy, you write bullshit". Last thing, in the 70thies, you had an unbreakable team: CHIN and CHAPMAN, writing songs for Suzy Quattro, The Sweet, Mud. They wrote a lot of songs. THE TROGGS, under Reg Presley, wrote "love is all around" and I remember me him telling: thanks to WET WET WET, who played this song for the movie 4 weddings and a funeral, he said that he didn't need no longer to count his money, because those guys just made my day, for having a good pension.

How long is a song VALID for copyrights, if you bring it in of course, both lyrics and music? I heard it is 70 years.
What happens, if you take the lyrics and put an other melody on it, or a 1998 song with other lyrics.
I am specialy interessed in the period, because a lot of people told me, 70 years.
This means, that you can take a song, dated in 1930, putted in a "brandnew modern jacquet" should be LEGAL?????
