ha ha ha... we talk constantly (he lives with me and is 14) yet somehow we seem to forget to talk about some things some times - so I think IF it happens to strike while on Chordie, why not make it Public?

I love working with humble people.
In the COGIC arena, that is hard to find. Many of the musicians that I have come across are show-offs with an "Im the best there is" attitude. It was the reason that I stopped attending Jurisdictional events like the one I'm playing at this week. But I see that things have changed and that the current rotation of musicians is VERY enjoyable. The Bassist almost feels like an uncle to me. I wanted to go to the music store and get him something just to show him how much I appreciate him...and I JUST met the guy! He is humble, sincere, laid back and very funny. 3 qualities I love in any person...kinda reminds me of Zurf...lol.
Dm
DM - That's why I love CHORDIE so much! There's many of those people here You're lucky to be able to be meeting people like that in person!

Re: Tequila and Jack (32 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Ha ha! Thanks boys. Yes, when my husband and I first met I was capable of drinking quite a lot of alcohol in one night. I was only 23 then so I guess that's normal? I learned how to drink tequila with the "local drunk". I'd walk in and the old hippie would buy us both shots until he passed out at the bar... then I'd switch to pitchers of Kamakazi's or Screwdrivers or just about anything as long as all the guys in town were buying. When I was finished, I'd walk myself down to the motel my parents owned, with the $20 still in my pocket that I walked into the bar with. I am NOT that girl anymore... nope, mostly just suzie homemaker now but I still do enjoy a few Jack-n-Cokes or Cranberry-n-Vodkas.
Phill - the song references mean a LOT! Desperado was kinda the song that described ME at the point when we first met. The Billy Joel song is the one that described HIM... and we danced to it as our wedding song in the backyard When I do finally get around to doing the video, maybe I will put some annotations into it to explain the meanings of the rest of it!
I played the song for my mom, and she is in love with it!

On a side note... you probably know WAY more about this stuff than I do DM! I'm still a "newbie" (although my one year anniversary of when I first picked up the guitar IS coming up! Whoo hoo!). Pix did upload a video to youtube a while back to kind of show me a few different techniques for palm muting and such. I haven't watched them in a while. Do a search on his youtube channel and maybe you will find them!

Re: Proper Palm Muting method (6 replies, posted in Electric)
Oh no, I hope there's no "rules" to palm muting! LOL! I just do whatever seems to work, but then... people haven't told me what's right or wrong so...
I find most of the time I can mute all the strings fairly evenly, but my upstrums tend to allow the top notes (trebles) to ring out. I've accepted this as sounding alright for the songs I'm playing. BTW... when I mute strings, I don't hold my pick traditionally. I only hold it between my thumb and index and spread the rest of my fingers out and brace them on the guitar. Again, no clue what's right or wrong, it's just the only way it seems to work for me. When just strumming, my fingers are generally all curled up with the pick in more of a "fist" type shape.

Re: Practice...really makes perfect. (14 replies, posted in Acoustic)
During my first month, I was more like the first. I would set aside a certain amount of time and a set list of things to practice and for how long to practice each of them. That was my "intro to guitar". Now, I'm more like the second. I know that going back to the way I started would get me a lot further, and more perfected (can you say buzzing strings?), yet the structure of it isn't what my mind needs. My mind needs to just be immersed into feeling and accomplishing... it might be getting that one chord change down in a particular song... or trying the song in 5 different strumming patterns and 3 different picking patterns until I "feel" the one I like best. It could be most anything, but whatever it is that day that "speaks" to me is like therapy. Immersing myself in it and losing myself in it is what the guitar is about (for me). Music has always been like therapy even before I ever picked up a guitar. It's never been about becoming a great player or singer, it's always been about doing what makes me feel good. YES I think I'm getting HOARDS better each month by doing it the way I am, BUT I think I would be 10 times better if I did it the other way! I don't care, I'm in it for the feeling and the love of how it makes me feel. I will say, when I sit down to "play the guitar" I don't ever just play the guitar. I am always working on something. The only time I ever just play, is if I am going to record... or if someone is there specifically to listen to me (open mic, playing in the park, playing at a campfire). At home, it's always practice!

Badeye - WOW! You're lucky you weren't hurt worse... sooo funny though. It would have been a little better if it had the same flavor as these others "while looking at a woman" ha ha!
Dino - Holy smokes! I'm picturing that in my head, wondering what the people standing there watching must have been thinking! The lovely irony, trying to keep the rats away he bled all over the pastries.
Toots - How brave of you to even consider sticking one of those in your mute! "no one will ever know, and it's working great!" Hello ladies, look what I've got in my trumpet! ha ha
Zurf - the story gets much worse and far more embarassing - I just am not so sure it's appropriate for Chordie! LOL! I really did "black out" that night (and it was the LAST time I ever drank enough to black out... scary stuff). Last thing I remember is sitting with my foot in that wheel barrow of ice water... then I wake up at 3AM sitting in my living room with a hot cup of coffee in my hands and NOT my wedding dress on (but I was clothed with a big ole bump on my head to add to the broken toe). I had to ask my bridesmaids what happened the rest of the night... and, it's not Chordie appropriate! I have NO idea how many people were still around for the "show"! --- And speaking of "Crazy as a Loon" look at you with the broken leg playing tennis! OH MY!

Re: To read or not read music, that is the question. (22 replies, posted in Music theory)
tjstevens2, welcome to Chordie! My opinion is to go ahead and start out with some chords, with chord diagrams for strumming. You'll find that they are centered around letters, which are notes. Learn some scales, which includes picking individual notes up and down the fretboard (and the music notation that goes with learning those scales)... and you'll be beginning to read music. Sadly, tab doesn't really teach you anything but to pluck said string on said fret... but once you know some scales you will know what each of those said strings on said frets are! I have to admit, I can read music and plunk it out on a piano however, I haven't learned my scales on the guitar yet. I'm going quite slow with putting the two together. My son on the other hand has already started learning some scales and while he can't read music as well as I can, he can already "plunk" some music out on the guitar!

Re: Embarrassing Moments (43 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Ok then, my wedding night it is. My husband and I bought our house and planned a nice little backyard wedding. It was my second wedding but his first. I made my wedding dress and the guys wore tuxes, while the guests were dressed in anything from jean shorts to summer dresses. I ordered tents, tables and chairs. His cousin's band came and played for us. A BBQ joint did the catering and we had a tier of cupcakes for the wedding cake. Of course there was beer, champagne, wine coolers and numerous bottles of alcohol (many people brought some with them to help stock the wedding bar).
Well, after I had a good buzz going, but still pretty early in the night, everyone started with their "I want to kiss the bride"... sure. A 13 year old boy (friend's kid) was really not into the whole thing however, and I took chase after him "you HAVE to kiss the bride!!!" We were weaving through the tables and chairs, under the tents, out of the tents everyone looking at me like I was a crazy loon! It was fun, run after the teen and if I could just catch him I'd give him a big ole lipstick mark on his cheek and he'd be sooooo embarassed! It didn't work out that way, that boy was fast and as I was catching up to him he took a sharp turn and BAM! FULL speed (with my shoes kicked off of course) I ran my left foot into a HUGE tent post. YOWSERS! I had NO idea that breaking a toe could hurt that bad. Suffice it to say, I spent the rest of the evening sitting in a chair while little children poured ice on my foot (wheel barrow filled with ice) calling out "Bring me the Doctor!!" - aka the Peppermint Schnapps my new brother in law had in his hand. I really don't remember much after that but I've heard some stories that I can't share about the rest of the evening after I got drunk enough to ease the pain and not remember anything! AHHH! Our Honeymoon that was supposed to be filled with golfing, horsebackriding, and dancing till dawn was VERY laid back instead. My toe still doesn't bend right. I run into people that were at the wedding whom I don't know too well (like his second cousins and such) and I cringe in embarassment wondering how late they stayed and if they were there for the part I don't remember or just what a "drunken NUT" they must think he married!

That's my problem too... can't think of much that's "broadcastable" (as I laugh at myself)... I mean I've got childbirth stories, and drunken wedding night stories... and random other drunken night stories... and then there's "time of the month" stories which I know you guys aren't interested in hearing! oh my! I will have to get back to everyone on this one!

Re: Finding the right key. (13 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Awesome advice above! I was playing yesterday and my Mom commented that the songs that I had written myself, or "made my own" by changing them a bit sounded best with my voice. I had to sit down and see what I was actually playing (love my capo and the capo conversion chart stickied at the top of this section) to find out what keys those songs are actually in. Have fun!

Oh wow... looked it up on youtube... very haunting for sure and yet beautiful at the same time. Sad. I couldn't find any chords anywhere for it. Some of her other stuff is available here and there online. I'm surprised no one has tabbed this one out yet as it seems better than some of her other stuff that is available.

Re: YouTube and copyright (12 replies, posted in My local band and me)
Wow! I received that message once before, but it was for a photo slide show I made with a pro recording of other music (off of a store bought CD) in the background. They did put the video through, but there was some kind of additional message about them having to place advertisements on my video. Maybe links to amazon to purchase the music or something of the sort. Apparently you are either THAT GOOD that you sound just like the Bee Gee's or YouTube is trying to find another way to make some money. It's sad. From my research, artists are allowed to cover songs completely legally. The only time it becomes an issue is if you are covering a song and getting paid for it (ie: selling your cover via download or cd)... THEN you should have a contract with the publishers and be paying them pennies for each recording you sell. I don't think that YouTube has the legal right to step in here personally. You're not selling music on their site, and even if you were... how do they know if you have a private contract with the publishers or not?
Keep us updated Roger, because I won't bother uploading anything else to YouTube, including originals, if they are going to make covers a pain in the tushy. Good Luck!

Re: Awesome gig bag (11 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Amy, funny thing is, I don't take the bag anywhere. It is to hold my Ibanez dread that I only play occasionally. That's why I got a bag instead of another hardshell. I couldn't see spending $100 for a case that sits around most the time. If I'm going somewhere I take one of my hardshells.
Hmmm... maybe we should just trade bags then huh? LOL! I keep mine on the wall when at home. I actually need another hanger as I have the two guitars now. I've been keeping one in the gig bag and feel so guilty closing one away in a bag all the time. It feels as bad as locking the dog away in a room when company comes (because my dogs are "too friendly" and will lick children to death and it apparently scares them).
Wayne, that's a REALLY nice case! Bonus, it's nearly as great as a hardshell but without the cost. If I ever get an "expensive" guitar I'll have to look into that one!

Zurf, I can appreciate what you're talking about here. Last guitar I bought I was passing up all the "name brand" entry level guitars. Everything under $400 from Martin and Taylor was putting me off... which was why I ended up with the laminate top Epi for under $200. In that price range, the "big guys" just didn't do it for me. I'm sure when I head back with a bigger wad of cash I'll be far more excited by the Martins and Taylors though. Or maybe upgrade from the Epi to a real Gibson!

Re: Awesome gig bag (11 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
That really is a nice bag. I am a little sad now. I think my husband paid about $20 for mine and it's not nearly as nice as that! I slide my music right in with the guitar as the front pocket isn't quite big enough to hold the music and a little too large to leave picks loose in there. Very nice find you have!

Ahhh... I haven't used it too much with my phone (small screen and all)... I generally just print everything out from the home computer although if I had an ipad I'm sure I'd be using it constantly for Chordie and saving my paper and ink! The admin of the site does come on here and check the threads... some others have mentioned similar issues with the iphone version (before everyone even had an ipad) so I'm sure he's probably working on it in his spare time. Little enhancements pop up here and there so keep your eyes open and let us know how it goes for you! (I did get your email... and am heading over to youtube in a few! )

Hee hee... thank you! It's a wonder we're still together with all that drinking to start off our relationship! LOL!
Well, no recording yet. I let my hubby read it, and I played the guitar part for him. I told him that he's not going to hear the music and singing together until he can play and sing ONE song all the way through. For a minute I thought that meant I'd NEVER record this, then I remembered he doesn't ever hardly go on the internet. Ha ha ha! Soooo... as I get some more time (when he's not around) I'll get it recorded and update here. He's been dabbling with guitar longer than I have, yet he never seems to finish anything he starts with respect to it. push push... shove shove... He has an AMAZING voice that I wish I could hear more (maybe I need to fill him up with some more Jack)
