I would say it was their fault.

But before you go cracking up like I would normally do, think of what their answers are going to be.

My guess is they will say wear and tear and nothing to do with what they done. And in a way they might be right. I dont think you would have any comeback on it.

But if they have filed it down and it looks bad you might have a case.

And did they really file the nut down or did they replace it with a new one? if replaced with a new one it might not have been worn down a bit like old ones get and your new string might have been putting too much pressure on it?

If I were you, I would buy a new nut and a set of very small fine files and do it yourself. It is not that hard to do.

another thing you could do is take it back with your old strings on, dont tell them you changed the strings and just blame them. But that would be dishonest, lol

my top 5 in no particualr order is

1. appetite for destruction by guns 'n' roses

2. inflamible material by stiff little fingers

3. piper at the gates of dawn by pink floyd

4. whatever people say i am..... by the arctic monkeys

5. skid row by skid row

I probably have got a lot beter ones than these. but these are all superb debuts as well,

any more?

can I just remind people that this section is to tell us who you think is the best band and not to slag off other peoples views.

I had to delete a post replying to someone saying what they thought of U2. A post that should never have been posted.

please be nice and friendly, no need for nasty comments.

beebs, you say about the band when the two bands joined up or something like that, then got slash.

Before Slash there was traci guns from  L.A.guns, it was him and Axle that made up gunds and roses. They had all their songs and ready to do the hell of the west tour when Traci said they were not ready and tried to stop it, Axel and the rest decided to go ahead without traci and had auditions for a new guitarist, this is where they found slash. Also this is why guns'n;roses and POISOn didnt get on to good, well actually it was slash and cc devile from poison, CC had auditioned for gunsnroses too but lost out to slash.

but yeah, fantastic band, prbably in the top 4 for best ever debut albums ever.

Hi Billy

Just spoke to my mate.

He says he plugs his effects pedal, guitar and anything else he wants to record straight into the computer's mic socket.

Now, I am not telling you to d othis, just saying this is what he does.

But if you are thinking of doing this I would turn all settings volumes etc all the way down first then gradually move them up.

hope this helps you

hi larbear

I just tried explaining some of my songwriting tips to someone here <a href="http://www.chordie.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=186&start=0&S=4af6df1a9824f3f6c3584d0e828c1cb0" target="_blank"> http://www.chordie.com/forum/index.php? … h=186& start=0&S=4af6df1a9824f3f6c3584d0e828c1cb0</a>

it might help you too, and might not.

to start you can pick a title for a song and work on that or name it at the end.

start writing about seomthing you know. like yourself, even if it sounds really bad.

DAvid Bowie once said " if you write a song and you like it then someone else in the world will like it too" or soemthing alolng thos lines. Basically, if you like it keep it, if you dont then chuck it

I still get days like this, when everything i write is rubbish, or i write one verse and a chorus then thats it, cant think of anything else.

or same as you making words rhyme and they turn out naff.

But dont throw away or delete anything you write down, save it and go back to it later, even 5 or 6 months later when you got that original tune in your head for it, out of your head. You think of a new tune and new words seem to come up.

and if you find it hard to find a word that rhymes then use a word that doesnt rhyme, even if it means changing a chord or two, even for the whole structure of the song.

It can be tricky sometimes and lots of times comes to a dead end within minutes, then even more frustrating after an hour or 2 trying to get a song down.

best thing, like I said, give up and save it for later.

hope this helps you.

look at al lthe songs of your favourite band and jumble some words up.

Ken

I have several guitars, well 4 acoustic, one electric bass( 20 years) african tom drums( 4 years), 3 jews harps ( 15 years), a mouth organ hmm still trying to play it), 2 electric violins ( my wife plays them), one acoutic violin( she plays this also) , tin whistle in D or A ( 6 months), and a bodhran ( 1 year and still learning)

played acoustic guitar for about 15 years.

I find I play my stagg twelve string guitar most just now, just for the lovely jingly jangly sound you get from a 12 stringer.

and other times  iwalk about the house with my wee Ozrak baby guitar. I normally take this away with me when I go walking up the hills for a few days but also very handy to walk about the house with.

My latest guitar is a solid top Lorenzo acoustic, not bad sound, not the greatest wither but it does me fine.

I have always wanted a triangle for some reason. hmmm, might be next on my list.

I would say out of those suggestions everybody hurts by REM would be better to to try, very easy and also if ye get bored with plucking you can go into a strum, like I do.

Stiff Little Fingers?  Aren't they a punk band from Ireland or Scotland from the mid/late 80's?  I haven't really heard their stuff but would you consider them to be one of the best bands ever?

hi zappa,

Yeah from northern ireland, started in 1977, split in 1982, reformed in 1987 and still going today.

I would definetly class them in the top ten for bands.

Their songs are so meaningful, good tunes to go with the lyrics. Very deep lyrics too. Have a listen to some of these songs, written from 1977 - present day. Might have to download them illegally though, lol, not that i would condone that.

"each dollar a bullet" about money going to terrorist funds

"strummerville" a song dedicated to the late Joe strummer

"half a life away" based on a true story

""who died and made you elvis"

"guitar and drum" about the manufactured bands that are crap

" Harp" about an irishman going to america

"tin soldiers" based on a nother true story

"is this what you fought the war for" how veteran soldiers get treated from the governmetns

"wasted life"  " johnny was"

I could go on and on,lol

as well as producing excellent songs they still tour every year and play glasgow 17 th march every year in the same place and have just got a british record for doing the same gig, same place for 15 years.

they play with passion every time. They have online discussions with fans a lot. The lead singer is often in the forums of the SLF page ( he even married the SLF webmaster Shirley)

so apart from the great songs, you got to take into account all the other things, meaningful lyrics, tunes, attitude to fans, loyalty to fans etc.

selene

good idea I think.

But, lol. What happens to the likes of knockling on heavens door? lots think it is a 3 chord wonder but it has 4 chords in it and the yare 4 very easy chords.

Or what about songs that are classed as 3 chord wonders with G,C,D but has a very occasional A in it that is not needed but will still show up on the song.

but the idea is good I think

Actually spaminator,

it is ac/dc.

I have have been a fan of ac/dc for 28 years and I know it is ac/dc.

and on the list it was listed as ac/dc

could also type in acdc.

to be 100% correct instead of a forward slash it should be a bolt of lightning but there is no bolts of lightning on the keyboard, lol

and couldnt get any chords that I wanted, it is all in tab form. I like lyrics with the chords above liie most songs are on chordie.

Pere,

When I clicked on ac/dc it took me somewhere else, I had to use the search and type in acdc.

I play my guitar daily.

I change my strings about every 3  or 4 months but have been known to change them after 2 months.

also depends on the strings you use, cheap crappy ones will need changing quicker.

yeah I do get e amils to say a new post has bee nentered to a thread that I have entered something in,

what I was saying is get a notification by email if the reply is to me.

Like I said, I dont follow threads on and on for weeks, months or years ,lol.

So if I entered something and someone responded to MY message then I would get an e mail saying. If someone replied to someone elses but on the same thread I would like not to get an  email, lol

make sense yet?

does to me.

oh yeah, another way is using your harmonics on the fret board,

the harmonic on the E string 5th fret is the same note as the harmonic on the 7th fret on the A string.

the harmonic on the 5th fret of the A string is the same as the 7th on the D.

harmonis on the 5th on the D, same as 7th on the G

The 5th on the G is not the same as the 7th on the B

but the %th on the B is the same as the 7th on the E.

phew.

also, the harmonic on the 12th fret of each string is the same as playing the note on the  7th fret on the string down from it apart from the B string, you play the 8th fret while plucking the harmonic on the 12th of the G string.

make sense? lol

Hi Pere,

I dont know how easy it would be or even if you would want to do this but.....

When I am going into my email I am getting hell of a lot of e mails, lol, yep, mostly from here.

I come in to check them and see that most  ( if any) are for me to read. Although I do like to read a lot of comments that I do not even join in with.

Would it be possible to have emails only when you get a reply from someone? i.e E mail says " there is a reply to your post" or something like that.

Would save everyones email inbox getting filled up so much.

I know I have the option not to receive the notifications, but they are good, apart from notifications for all the ones I have finished commenting on as they go off the subject that they started with or I have nothing else to contribute to that post.

Just a thought.

my first cd? lol, no idea.  Itihnk it might have been "telso " " 5 man  acoustical jam" in 1991 when i was visiting america. I got the cd without having a cd player, but i knew I would have to get one as vinyl was getting phased out.

first album i bought though was in 1981 when i was 11 years old, " acdc's "highway to hell", and still a fantastic album to this day

hi,

I can tune, or nearly tune a guitar by ear ( always out slightly but good enough)

takes years i tihnk. Get the note of c or F in your head. relate it to other sounds. i.e. years ago the "dead tone" on a tlelphone was the note C ( not sure if it still is) I used to pick the phone up and listen to that and tune the note C to that for begining with to train my ear to that sound.

Also , thin kof songs that are tuned, I.e. AC dc tunes, pick a song and learn it of by heart, every time ytou go to tune, think of your chosen song.

And lastly, learn a silly wee tune like yankie doddle dandy etc, lean it note perfect, and tune your guitar accordingly.

hope that helps
