Thanks Mr. Administrator, Roger. I looked on the internet, and as far as I know, pop at least on that site, I believe it is wikipedia, they also speak about pop(ular) music, that pop is not a short word for popular music, personally I don't believe it.
What I don't find is when popmusic "popped" up. Is it related with American music? Suddenly there was a bunch of groups, most of them trying to compete with the Beatles, and a lot located around the Mersey. If you want, you can find a very interesting item about the beatles: songs the beatles gave away. Look Obladi Oblada, a hit for the Beatles and almost at the same time Marmelade. I was also told, even years ago, that Mozart would have been the king of pop, if he lived in this time. I think it is easier to follow the origine of rock & blues than to find, what I call an ancestor of the real POP music. Maybe it is easier to mention, knowing, writing and talking about all the thiny categories, like psychedelic music, or mod, garage etc.
Even if you listen carefully to the first Pink Floyd albums, that they were in fact (my opinion) quit bombastic, followed by others of course like soft machine, for example.
Isn't it always so, that when a style becomes popular, a lot of others start to play in the same style, and just look the movies, a big smash box office hit let's say about sport like base ball, are within 1 year followed by similar movies. I am really breaking my head on this topic, WHERE DID POP MUSIC starts (talking about the sixties), and often very catchy tunes, but I am getting crazy, by searching a song that can be considered as well boys, this must be the first pop song.
If you see the guitar chords, you will use, and at that point, if you can play fluently this chords on guitar, there are ONLY 7 chords, of course you have to add the minor, the 7th, like A7, and when practising and patience, you are considered as a very good player if you can play and it is possible, I can play about 40 chords on guitar. As I wrote, and with the theory of 7 major chords, it is in a lot of songs: hearing, stealing with your ears, and maybe 3 years later, even ABSOLUTELY NOT THINKING at the song you heard 3 years ago, that you write a very similar song.
Very interesting Rog is: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN and SPIRIT by TAURUS (or taurus by spirit) YOU CAN NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU HEAR. Starting with this knowledge, you can indeed explain a lot.
I posted also a topic: North-American music, blues, R&R, country, how did it start? It is a very hard topic, but interested in music, just like you and a lot of us, I think that this topic has to be interesting. How, for example, slaves started singing, rather monotone, but very creative, and singing african songs, gospel, blues, BUT also influence of the immigrant groups (italie, germany, ireland) and also what about native music? IT IS A VERY HARD ONE, but I still hope to get answers. BTW this is in my case (accident, remember?) the best site on the internet, and even better than best if you like to play music. I don't know how to thank you, because it is so interesting, questions are answered, it takes probably a few hours a day. Congratulations, thanks and I wish you and the team the best. I will hear you soon again, I guess

Topic: the roots of POP music (3 replies, posted in Songwriting)
I posted a topic a few days ago about the contemporary music in the USA, and what are the main influences in the development of blues, R&R, bluegrass, Country & Western.
But this is more an European phenomenon, WHERE AND WHEN can you start to speak about POP MUSIC, like BRIT POP, the kinks, the who, the animals.
I know that blues records where very hard to find, because most of the performers where afro-americans. Groups like the Stones and the Beatles, not forgetting people like Peter Green (early Fleetwood Mac) Clapton, Jeff Beck and more, they started often in groups like Alexis Corner, John Mayall, and that's where they started to talk about BLUES-ROCK, with a "central role" for the electric guitars. The products of this school are guitarists and groups like ROLLING STONES, early BEATLES and guitar gods like Clapton, (too much to name them all) and in the US, it started maybe a little bit later, with Johnny Winter, Canned Heat.
BUT here we are discussing again about blues and rock.
So is there someone, or I hope a lot, who can tell us: WHERE CAN YOU FIT IN POPMUSIC.
It is not easy, like who wrote the first Rock Song: Bill Haley? not convinced. ELVIS PRESLEY: probably more. I go for Chuck Berry & Johnny Lee Hooker. Again this is ROCK.
BUT POP MUSIC is the topic, where does it come from, POP(ular) MUSIC??, who are the pioneers?
Help me please .
THANKS

Dear friend "boot", I know you are a very nice person and always giving advise (very wise too).
I know that if I have, knowing my condition, an occasion to go to the USA, I will certainly try to contact you. There are others too. Always ready to answer questions and to give advise and even solutions. That's what I try to do also, and answering questions, and posting new topics.
I have, as you know all the time in the world since I stopped working, and I am so glad that I have found this site, and especially to see that a lot, you know I baptised the members into "chordians", because I love this word.
Those CD's and tapes, are they from musicians? And if, it must be very hard sometimes.
You know that I like to post "facts", I have a few new facts, and I will post them.
I also know that there are things like a "quiz" about music, and I love the responses, because there are a lot of facts that no one believe, or at least they are hard to believe.
But I think that a lot of facts are read and the things I write about this topics are 100% correct.
This topic, reflections on songs, is also a nice one. It is more difficult than I thought to give an answer so I answered the first song that popped up. Of course the more I or You think, the more you will find. And as I wrote, English is not my mother tongue, so our generation, of course more in Europe, we listened MORE to the music, than to the lyrics.
Boot, have a nice day, and talking about guitars, do you MAKE guitars too?

Topic: active musicians (7 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
I just saw a topic written by "dagger" I think, being proud that he is playing in a band and that people pay about 1000$, I hope he can continue, and I am proud that someone is proud and honest to tell this.
I wanted to know a few things, if it is not asked too much.
- are there members who are active in a band and giving "gigs" with their band.
- if yes, are they professional, or semi professional.
- is there 1 or more "chordian" who can live from what he's doing? meaning by playing guitar alone or in group? We know that this site is getting bigger and bigger, and I am also interested if there are professional musicians on this site.
- we, you and me, know already and learned in particular, a lot of tips, tricks, chords, songs, and I like the fact that everybody here is really nice and friendly and always prepared to encourage each other, to help each other.
- some chordians know a lot of music and others don't. BUT the purpose is to give your knowledge to newbies, and even learning from newbies.
So are there on CHORDIE musicians who are able to live from their music? (I don't ask how much they are paid, that's up to the person if he want to tell it)

Re: i love my band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) (5 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
I am proud in your place. I find this topic really nice.
A lot of "chordians", we all play guitar, and I don't know if there are other members here who played and are paid for playing on stage, or clubs.
I really want to know what kind of music you're in.
I have played a few times in groups myself, but because of my profession (med doc) it was very hard to perform. You have to make choices in your live. My family, 2 brothers & 2 sisters, they all went into creative and/or artistic professions. My sister is, now just directing, playing in some movies in BERLIN Germany, a professional ballerina. It is always difficult to talk about yourself, I am a pretty good player (age:51 already) and I wrote a lot of tunes, some of them are "stolen", because of so called friends, pro musicians, and I didn't register my songs.
I am a very active topic writer and I will put as a new topic how many of us are getting money to perform.
Please write your kind of music, how many times a month you play, and how old are you?
It can help other people to cross the line.

Hi Krishanu, nice to hear something from you. As you can see, I am very active on this site, because it is not only a great site, even MORE, it is a great pleasure to meet people (cyber of course), and you can also ask and write and answer topics. My philosophy is there are no stupid questions, I do agree that sometimes it looks like it, but in the mean time, I play already for about 30 years, and still I am surprised. I also like to put "facts", or questions, topics here who are sometimes VERY difficult to answer, like a topic I wrote yesterday about the origin of North American music, like how the music started, talking about blues, rock, hilly billy, folk, country, metal. I know a lot of music, but I can't read 1 note and everywhere you live or go, there are always facts to be amazed, like who wrote that song, especially when 99% is convinced that it is artist X, but the truth is that the song was written by artist Y.
I do have a lot of time, I am a medical doctor and had a quit serious car crash in September 2000.
Started again 11 months later, and as I feared, it turned into a nightmare. More and more work, working against advise of collueges, I suffered so much pain, that it was impossible to continue working. The only good thing is that I was insured, even too much, because I will never have my health back, paralysed in my left leg, and more or less 30 fractures in my left foot. The GUITAR & MUSIC were a great support for me, I can still walk, but playing a little concert: I loose my conscience after standing in a certain position, 10 minutes later. Very frustrating if you are in a big store to buy stuff.
But, now I contacted you, a thing I was intended to do, because I don't think that a lot of people know about your music. I was there for a few weeks years ago, and I am very curious in what you can learn us. I would love it, if you post a topic concerning the music and different styles & influences, because 99,9% is a "virgin" about music from the Far East

Re: What's the hardest chord you ever encountered? (133 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Dear worm(proof), nice nick name, do you live in the USA or Europe, sorry, just a personal question.
The chord you mentioned is a very hard one, more it is just played for a very short period, and followed by a B7 chord, it is the famous Ebdim7 chord which is indeed very hard to play.
In most of the cases, when I encounter a chord like that, I first try to skip it, meaning that I don't play THAT chord and in 90% of the cases, where you see a chord like that, it will not harm the song if you play it. However, it is not for nothing that that chord is there, it will in most of the cases, just add a little bit more performing the song. I suggest to see the songs by Paul Simon, Elton John, because a lot of songs are written, or composed, using a piano or keyboard, and those are sometimes almost impossible to play. Another thing is that the song is often written for the "VOICE of THE PERSON WHO SINGS IT", for example, if you hear the voice of James Blunt, compared to Rod Stewart, it will be different. However, I have the complete Beatles collection in a book, and I am really scared to open it, because a lot of songs contain very almost impossible to play chords. I do agree that when you play in a cover band, the shadows, the beatles and you can read music and notes it is indeed a must. If you skip that Eb chord while playing and singing my sweet lord, I don't think that people will notice it. If you look for songs on this SUPER site, you have the possibility of TRANSPOSE chords. This is how I work, I look for a song and yes I found it, and not in tab form, but with chords on top. I see a lot of # or b, and difficult chords, I transpose them, one semitone higher or lower and you will notice often that you can play that pattern, without changing the song. It fits you to play and to sing.
I hope I could give you some help.

Topic: Disaster question: songwriting lyrics versus music (1 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Another question just popped up.
How do you write a song. I ask maybe this more specific: what is most important: the music or the lyrics, even knowing that they are both important.
Starting from nothing on a paper:
- will you have a different song if you start with LYRICS, and than music: I mean you write lyrics and you build music around those lyrics?
- or you have a tune, and in that tune you put your lyrics?
It sounds crazy, but I amp convinced that you will have 2 DIFFERENT songs.
I listen, NOT COMPOSING now, first to the music, and a little bit later to the lyrics.
I waited a long time to ask this, because I was a little bit shy to ask this. It is something that is so difficult for me, because in my opinion, starting with just the lyrics and after this the music, will give a different result if you start with music.
WHO CAN HELP ME, DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS KIND OF STATEMENT, OR NOT. WHO HAS EXPERIENCE?
It is easier to put lyrics after you wrote a song, than writing a song when you wrote already the lyrics.
This is for me a DISASTER question.

Re: Reflections on Songs and Artists that make you think (9 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I love this question. My mother tongue is DUTCH, but I speak fluently 4 languages and another 2 pretty well. I write this, being 50 years old, that when I was about 20, 30 years, I just listened to the music and not the lyrics or words.
The song with the BIGGEST effect on me, it hit me like a cannonball was, after I had an affair with a super model, we even planned to move to South Africa, when that affair saw daylight. It is a period
in my life, speaking of 1988, that I want to forget, but I still think, strange enough not about her, but about the time we had each other. The song was DON'T FORGET TO REMEMBER written and performed by the Bee Gees.
What I can see very clearly now, is that youngsters, like my daughter, 20 years old, was singing at the age of 5, the COMPLETE LYRICS of the guns and roses hit: KNOCKING ON HEAVENS DOOR.
So maybe I am speaking for a lot of older people here, you have to admit that, except for MTV, there are a lot of music stations, and even more on Television. They learned to "mimic" the lyrics and to understand them.
Now I try to listen to the words, and I still see a lot of songs with stupid lyrics, and sometimes it is funny to translate them in my language, like: baby I miss you so, because I loved you so, the sun was shining, now it's raining. That's the kind of songs you will still find in 75%.
For super good lyrics, Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young), and a lot more, recent artists too.
But what is your point of making, playing, composing songs: lyrics followed by music, or music followed by lyrics.

You are a super gentleman. I love chordie, I ask questios, and I adore to put facts on the website.
I have to admit that there is a kind of friendship between a lot of members, there will always be people, who see this site as "something" else. Did you find the person who wrote about dating?
Sometimes you see very funny "not related with music" things.
I hope I am not disturbing too much with my facts and other stuff. Music is not only about PLAYING, or HAVING GUITARS or other things, but those who play that music are most important.
The man and not the instrument. I am happy here, and happy to meet "SOUL MATES", and I have plenty of time to look for facts, and questions. In the first weeks, like probably most of us did, a lot of questions are about what kind of guitar, or what is the best: Gibson or Fender.
I tried a lot since the forum, and I can only conclude, talkin about guitars, that some songs sound better with a gibson, others with fender... but I hope we all have respect, especially for newbies.

I am 100% convinced and I really DO HOPE, that we should have at least once a big meeting. Imagine at least 1000 of us, chordians, staying there, exchanging tips, tricks songs. I am afraid that the organisation of such a meeting will be a horrible task.
You need money to go there, so it will be quit expensive which I think will be the biggest problem.
It looks like a dream, meeting all the people behind their (nick) names, and having fun fun fun.
We should maybe invite a professional guitar player and have our mini Woodstock.
Unfortunately, this will be a year project, getting a lot of us together for a few days. For me I think it is possible, even when there are only 100 chordians, it will be a success.

Because there are still a lot of people who find it still strange to see girls, women playing on guitar, I mean not like Joan Baez or Emmilou Harris style, but I am really interested what kind of style they play: more metal, blues, rock, pop OR acoustic and who is their example or influence

The origin of music instruments as we know them now.
Like "akunting" a primitive African instrument, made with, I don't know the word in English, a body from a kind of fruit, or wood, not solid but with a big resonance and a few chords, and it's considered as the "ancestor" of the banjo.
Are ther chordians who know more about it?

Topic: The evolution and influences concerning North American Music (0 replies, posted in Songwriting)
I have placed this, I think very interesting topic, because it is hard to find stuff on the web, and it is most related with song writing.
I am maybe not a virgin concerning this topic, but I really want to know more.
What I know is
- blues, starting, I think??? in the southern States, nearby the Mississipi Delta. Afro-Americans who, I even think where not allowed to play instruments (IS THIS CORRECT CHORDIANS????), maybe guitars? started to sing while working songs, no evidence of blues before 1901 AND of course very few records. I just know that a lot of the songs early 1900, have their roots in Africa, at the time when "slavery" was the most normal and lucrative business and they had only the songs they used to sing in their tribe before being captured.
Didn't the first songs noticed, had similarity with GOSPEL, I am even convinced that GOSPEL & BLUES are, or were the most important influences? I think to remember me that there are even parts of MUSLIM music, but I am not sure, I just know that they invaded a lot of countries in Africa and Europe
The guitar was invented early 1800, maybe earlier in Europe. If you see the style and craft werk, they should have been to expensive for 90% of the people in the USA.
I know a few songs, very old songs, like BLACK BETTY, NOT performed by RAM JAM, just , it is maybe INCORRECT, but he performed it, LEADBELLY (?), just mumbling it, more talking and the rythm: tapping with a feet on the floor.
DO I HEAR THERE ALSO THE VERY EARLY START OF RAP music???
I JUST WRITE "MY OPINION" what about music played by Native Americans, is there an influence?
All the immigrants, with an explosion at the end of 1800, beginning 1900.
- Irish influence? Italian German Dutch. It is getting complicated!
Where are the roots from country and western, is C&C together with, or mixed up, blues responsable.
Songs like "the house of the rising sun", (lyrics are different in the version of "the animals) by Bob Dylan, who probably discovered the song somewhere because it should be a traditional, where is this song from, what style?
I can go on for hours, but I am convinced that this topic can give us a very good impression concerning the North American Music.
Really hope to get a lot of answers, hoping that you will like this topic.
There will be FACTS, YOU HAVE TO THINK, DEDUCTIONS, and I don't think it will be easy
I just wrote down what "I THINK to know", and not what I know. Music, and all the aspects are besides active playing my PASSION, and if you are on chordie, I am convinced that I am for sure not the only one who thinks that way.
If you have examples of songs (maybe popular songs, not realising that they existed already, before we started to put it in little categories) write them down

It would be very interesting. Most of us just know that music, especially here in Europe, from their Holiday.
Bootleger, how do you want us to show that music?
It looks a little bit, more than a little bit like Greek Music, but check the history: domination of Greece by the TURKISH people for a few centuries.

Every topic about music, playing music, facts about music, even questions and answers you can use in a "quiz" are welcome.

You can ask the most idiot question, if related with music, players and so on.. I can only tell you that what seems to me sometimes a question where we think, it is impossible that there are people who don't know that, we will, and I am just a (maybe very active) member, you will get an answer, or a discussion, let's just take an example, about how to put your fingers to play the C chord

Re: i need songs (3 replies, posted in Electric)
what do you mean with tired of playing the same songs?
I play already 30 years and here on this site, you can find more than 1000 songs. I want to be honest, there are songs, unfortunately that are not edited, although they are on chordie, or only tabs
It took me also a while before I understood the system, but you can, if you are on the artist page search for a title, like "walk this way" and after search: you will mostly find the songs.
Another very important tip: try to play along with your favourite music.
I think, and I tried it, because it is a PAYING site that you put any title in that program, it analyses the song and you get the chords & the name of the chords. Problem, you get a b# or another one, where you should get C (just an example).
I tried to find desperately searching for songs, months ago, and I can only say, you get 500* if you find a better one.
We (chordians) talk about everything, 99,9% topics related about music.
Check out all the fine topics.
Need help? ask, this site is for everyone and the more members, the more info.

I am from Belgium, EUROPE.
I just wanted to know about playing in Church, because this phenomenon is not (maybe) anylonger present here. So I read a lot on "chordie" and I see a lot of people asking songs or how to play guitar, because they play in church, and to be honest I am very greedy to know exactly what this means and what they hope in the future.
As far as I see or understand, there must be a lot of musicians who start to play in Church, what kind of songs are played: Dylan? and is it also in every religion? because in the USA they have a lot of different "churches".
Singers, like Whitney Houston they started singing in Church.
That's why I write this topic, because of the difference between the USA & Europe

JOHNNY & EDGAR WINTER
THE JACKSONS
We had, my God, also THE OSMONDS.
BUT: I wanted to know if groups starting with nephews, brothers suffer the same problem? Everything is allright until 1 or even 2 of them, are starting to stand in the shadow???
I just try to say, but it is only like sticking a band aid on a wooden leg, that even if they agreed that every song is written by them, problems can occur. There are a lot of "frustrated" people, for me.
People who were not accepted in school, college and with a minority complex, the particles that can push a person straight into drug and alcohol problems when succes is there, as musician.
Also some of them are sinking very deep: EXAMPLES: THAT GUY from The Libertines I think, Docherty?, aka the boyfriend of Kate Moss and, but they were predestinated (talking proffesional) like BRIAN WILSON, even PETER GREEN, both suffering from a kind of braindamage
using too much drugs and alcohol, add Brian Jones too. BUT ONE THING THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON: Brilliant, even geniusses in what they do, THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO HANDLE THE TRAIN OF SUCCES & or, see Brian Jones, a sad really sad story. HIS CHILD, "The Rolling Stones" was adopted thanks too Mr Andrew Loog Oldham, by MICK & KEITH who wrote everything. He taught he was excluded. But see George Harisson same problems, but he was a lot more resistant and he wrote pearls, beautiful "angel music" we'll never forget, like SOMETHING, WHEN MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS, HERE COMES THE SUN, personally some of the best Beatles songs

Topic: BANDS and BROTHERS (8 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
As you know, there are quit a lot of bands, starting with relatives, to name a few
- OASIS : Noel and Liam Gallagher.
- THE KINKS: Ray Davis and Dave Davies (who was LEAD guitarist and vocalist)
- Beach Boys: Brian, Dennis etc
- BEE GEES: Barry, Robin and the late Maurice.
- CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL: John and Tom Fogerty
- DIRE STRAITS: Mark and David Knopfler
The rest is for you chordians. Why are there so much problems
Often because 1 brother started the band, while the other took over (CCR), I think that the Gallaghers must have a special arrangement because they still exist, after 1 brother, who was roadie joined the band and is now the composer of all their great hits.
I think it is not human to play in 1 group where your relative is adored like a God.
Even little brothers who tried to follow the steps of their brothers are often doomed.
Actually, I know only 1 exception AC/DC, the Young brothers in AC/DC, got an older brother who had a few big hits, together with a guy named VANDA (Dutch Immigrants in Australia) THE EASYBEATS.
But what about CHRIS JAGGER, ANDY GIBB or SEAN & JULIAN LENNON.
SO SMASH THIS TOPIC, you can have fun on a quiz about pop music.

Re: pink floyd top 3 albums (19 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
well I think exactly the same thing.
It is a topic to discuss for hours, you can see very clearly the BARRETT period, followed by the WATERS GILMOUR struggle, and if you listen to their first albums, there are 2 (maybe 3) albums, where you really can see the "bridge" between the more psychadelic Floyd and the big machine they are now.
My opinion is they started to change, I MEAN FOR A MUCH BIGGER AUDIENCE, after the still more "spacesound" albums: MORE and UMMAGUMMA, but MORE there we can discuss, released before UMMAGUMMA, and yet folk and blues tracks.
More is underestimated.
I did exactly what you did, probably in the napster period, and put them together. I just had 1 funny problem: HERE IS THE ANSWER FOR RECORD COMPANIES, I downloaded DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, when I was home after my crash in 2000-2001, and every track from the album Dark Side, I noticed, months later, that from every song, the last 10" were not there, sh*****, but because of a lot of time, I finally tried to fill my blanc CD-roms, in a chronological way. So I should have everything. And BOOTLEGS: probably as much as official releases.
By the way, from 1 end to another, I adore also THE BEE GEES, before they went disco, I have more or less 20 official CD's and the same amount in mp3.
If you have luck and time, I had, I have the COMPLETE CCR set, starting with Tom Fogerty and the Blue Velvets up to the last CCR track, all the Tom Fogerty albums, this took a lot of time, days, weeks. But look at their story, very similar to Pink Floyd: Tom started the band, with his younger brother John, and left: from founder to zero, same with Dire Straits and Kinks. I don't think it is easy to start a band, and to be a few years later in the shadow of your brother. This one would be a very nice topic: maybe you start that one. I will: bands and brothers (see Oasis), well I will post this topic.
greetings and of cpurse a nice day.
