I have an older Ibenez bass , sounds great ,very easy to play ,long scale. I won't part with this baby ever. My friend needed a bass for recording so he bought the short scale Gretsch. It looks real nice but doesn't sound very good to me. He's had for awhile and has used it on two projects, about 24-25 songs. He told me he didn't think it sounded half as nice as my Ibenez. I think it's the short scale but I don't know for sure. It's the only short scale bass I've heard. In the end if it feels good to you and gives you the sound you want, buy it. You only have to please yourself.

Great story ! You have to live to enjoy it. I've been there myself. Should be a song in there. Snow Shovel Blues, Parking Lot Blues, Take Me Back to Georgia !! You get the idea.

DE, I like the needed to work on list. It's a great list to serve as a songwriters guide. We all write songs in our own format. Their are no hard and fast rules about how to write a good song. Critique is always good but in some cases can crush the writer. If you are looking for critique you must be prepared for all and any unfavorable opinions. And I do say opinion. The end result of a really good song is what your audience thinks of it. They will determine if the song is truly well written and they can relate to it. The song you expect to be good may not be the one your audience likes. I myself have played and recorded friends songs. I don't do them the same way they do. It's the way I hear the music or lyrics. It's my opinion about how the song should be. The way my friend wrote the song is not wrong, It's how they tell the story and how they felt when they wrote it. The more you play your songs for people the more you get the feel for how they accept them. The better your story telling gets , the more you see the songs become accepted. The more you write the better writer you will become. Even the best songwriters can be criticized, so don't be disappointed by what people say about your work. Listen to your audience they'll let you know what they like.

I know how you feel. The neck on my Taylor 314ce got broken at a gig when the wind kicked up and took it off it's stand onto a concrete driveway. I was sick once I looked it over. I got the neck replaced and though it doesn't match as nice as the original neck the guitar still plays and sounds like a dream. I wouldn't let this one go for anything. There are a lot of replacement necks out there maybe you could find one that will fit. That's what I'd think about.  Good luck !

Pete played a concert last year at age 93. He told the audience his wife wrote five verses to Turn, Turn, Turn for their kids. Pete said he had forgot about them and had never sung them in concert before. That night he added them to the song. They where very amusing verses and even Pete beamed as he sang them. I hope I can still be strumming and singing at age 93.

Enjoy your new friend !!!

Joe

Right on DE. And you are still out the $100.

Oh yeah, people say I have expensive taste. I buy what I want when I can afford it. But I try to find the best deal I can get. Buy what you want when you can afford it. It doesn't matter what, not everyone agrees on what has value. If you get happiness from what you have that's all that matters. In many cases like your Gibson it has more monetary value than most people know. Don't worry about them, it didn't cost them a thing.
Enjoy the fruit of your labors.

I can see where this could be useful at times and to different people. It all depends what you are trying to do. But if you only use simple standard tuning I don't think it's worth it. Down side is it's new technology and probably has lots of flaws still not completely worked out. But that doesn't stop a company from putting it out.  Also not going to be cost effective. I wonder how many will actually be sold ?

Try loosing your grip on the pick. Hold it almost to the point of dropping the pick from your fingers. Practice this for awhile until you lighten up but don't drop your pick. This may help you to lighten up your playing and relieve tension in your shoulder. It's what I tell people who are starting out and are very stiff with their strumming hand. Just a suggestion. Old habits are hard to change. Hang in there.

Happy New Year from Wisconsin, The Frozen Tundra !!

I totally agree !!!  Guitars were created so guitarists wouldn't take over the world.  But I think we are getting pretty darn close.

Merry Christmas to all the Chordie Family !!!!

Joe

I've always like the coated strings. I liked the old Martin SP+ but they don't make them anymore. Now all I use are the Elixer Phospher Bronze lights or custom lights. When I do 4 hours of music a night they are way easier on my fingers. And there is plenty of volume and tone from my Martins and Taylors. In the end you pick what sounds best to you.

Great News !!! What a great Christmas gift.

I have always liked the under the saddle pickups myself.  I could always put a sound hole cover in if feedback was a problem. I have always used Fishman Gold pickups and really like the tone.  Just the pickup, No onboard EQ you set that on the amp or mixer. I recently added a compressor pedal between the guitar and mixer and I get a super warm tone , lots of volume and no feedback issues and I don't need the sound hole cover.
In the end go with what you like best. That one thing that makes the sound your own.

Joe

Glad to hear at least you'll get your money back. Don't give up on the Martin's tho.  What a bummer.
