I don't like to wash my hads before playing - I want those calouses good and hard.

Interesting that we're all talking about our guitarS, rather than singular. i just got a brand new mandolin last night ( a sweet as a nut Garrison, with a big canuck maple leaf on the label ). This lead to the inevitable question, "but how many is that, now?"  I thought I had fenced my way around that one when she asked an even more insensitive question - "would you ever think of selling one of them. "

I think I'm in Soapy Bubble ( translation-  for all except Headcase - "Trouble" ). Thoughts on how to gain more wriggle room would be appreciated.

It also depends where in the world you are. Freshman Guitars are producing some excellent guitars at decent prices, but I'm not sure if they are available in the States for instance.

'Bout ye, Headcase !

I blame mine on Jimi Hendrix at full volume stereo six inches from each ear trying to track the guitar as it shifts from one speaker to the other. We should form a band, call ourselves the deef eejits !

Allabest.

"I still think its something with my ears, and I hope it can be 'repaired'."

Well, in my experience it was my ears ! Over a number of years it became more and more difficult to hit pitch when tuning. From there being a sharp edge to the note, it slowly rounded off until now I can only tell that I am off pitch when I play a chord ( it "beats" wrongly ) or the tuner tells me.

Quite separately, I went for years ignoring complaints from wife and kids over having to ask them to repeat anything they said. I eventually bit the bullet and got my ears tested. I now have a hearing aid and it makes all the difference.

I still play the guitar without a hearing aid - just using a tuner to tune. When I play with the hearing aid in the whole tone of the guitar changes - becomes toppy.

There are a huge number of people whose hearing starts to deteriorate at they get older. The answer is to recognise the symptoms and do something about it. Now when I put in my hearing aid in the morning, suddenly the birds burst into song.

Reminds me of a live album by John Mayall. You can hear people in the crowd calling out "Room to Move, Room to Move"

His response was " No there's no Room to Move, what'd you come here to do, hear an old record or somethin'"

Upyerkilt is about right.

The Telecaster was originally brought out as the Broadcaster - the connection to TV and Radio being fairly exciting as a concept back in 1950. Broadcasting originally related to sewing seeds - casting them out on the soil.

Good day, Headcase. You must have played that flute just across the city from where I am typing now.

Flat picking is just the same as fingerpicking - it takes practice and patience. Beyond that essential, there are a few wrinkles that may help.

1. Get yourself a medium to heavy pick and stick with it. Don't go for a thin and whispy one as when you transition from chords to single notes you won't have the grunt to make them ring out. I find that Dunlop tortex yellows are thin, but the material has a rigidity that is perfect for my playing - but its a personal decision.

2. When you are playing chords hold the pick loosely. I find that moving my index finger higher up the pick helps the pick to develop that crucial waggle (?!) and keep the pick in your mit.

3. When picking single note runs, the angle of attack that you give to the pick will also make a difference. There are two dimensions to this. Firstly, hitting the string flat on will produce a ringing note, hitting it at 45 degrees will soften the note. Secondly, twisting the pick so that more of the edge of the pick comes into contact will actually make it easier to pluck the string. I learnt through teaching myself to play mandolin ( which has double the string courses and double the plucking problems ) that twisting the pick increases the speed you can pick while maintaining the volume.

4. Try some cross-picking exercises to develop control of the pick in relation to the strings. Folk of the wood have free lessons at http://www.folkofthewood.com/page5308.htm .

Again, for more in depth discussion about picking check out Folk of the Wood . http://www.folkofthewood.com/page3592.htm.

And how's this for fingerpicking - Stanley Jordan plays "Stairway to Heaven."

Of course there are ways to increase the size of your hands - did you ever see a photo of Robert Johnston ?!

This side of the pond, I would include

Billy Bragg
John Martin
Davy Graham
Bert Jansch

Stateside

Guy Clarke
Townes Van Zandt
Steve Earle

In fact, the last three appeared live on a charity CD called "Together" for a dental hospital. It has a real "Troubadour" feel to it.

Really don't like that kind of xenophobic rant!

The current crisis has more to do with sub-prime lending across the US and frenzied speculation in oil than anything to do with opec.

BTW you didn't put any chords to the song . . .

"Hey man, I was really surprised to see "Rudi, a message to you" by The Specials in your songbook! I love this band and very few people (at least in my part of the world) know who they are. "

Ah, great memories ! The Specials were.

I was at a UB40 reunion gig earlier this year - dancing in the body of the hall for the first time in centuries - and dance we did ; best aerobic exercise ever.

For anyone interested, I recently read a book by Mr Horace Panter, the Specials bassist, about the Specials called "Ska'd for Life", It's a good read.

As seen on a long forgotten programme - "The Tube" with Jools Holland - they did a special from West Berlin ( how long ago was that ? ) on German punk bands.

One of the bands was called " Die Toten Hosen" - the dead trousers - which I thought was punktastic. I think I saw the same band was still playing a few years ago.

You could also spend some time taming your plectrum, so that it hits the string you want where you want it, at the angle you want it  and when you want it. Then start working on the speed. Five minutes a day will make all the difference.

Then again, is resale value down to the quality of the guitar or the knowledge that the market will hold the price on resale - in other words is MIA just a marketing ploy? Would MIA have the same resonance in Europe for instance?

To be honest, MIA feels rather xenophobic outside the US and Canada. We have great guitars being made throughout the world beyond the pacific rim, built on a foundation of quality lutherie - take Lowden or Avalon for instance.

I'm for Spain too, if only because they topped Northern Ireland's group and we beat them 3-2 in Belfast ( Healy scored a hat-trick).

I would have prefered that one of the domestic TV companies had spent some cash on ensuring we could see the rugby internationals.

Happy Father's day to all oul Da's out there.

Breakfast made for me this morning, chance to watch an old movie on TV ( Jeremiah Johnston - now there was a man ! ) this afternoon, and a meal out with the family earlier tonight, sitting with a beer now and contemplating picking up the guitar   - bliss !

"I can still afford to keep strings on my guitar, and lets face it, guitar strings are the most important thing that we can buy."

Lord I wish I had some guitar strings Old Black Diamond brand
I'd string up this old Martin box and go and join some band . . .

   Get myself a rockin' chair
To see if I can lose
   Them thin dime hard times
   Hell on Church Street blues.

Maybe if we all went out and bought a rocking chair it would all go away.

Old Doll, yes, it was a disappoining day yesterday. I watched the results come in and became more and more depressed. Makes me wonder if nations are only good at going to war.

"I always have to wonder where I fit in, playing the guitar, the piano, drums, saxophone, bass, and blues harp."

I have a friend  who charges £500 an hour to answer questions like that. I understand he has a very comfortable couch.

And what's with the persecution of bagpipes. Bodhrans, I can do without, but life without the Uilleann pipes would be a sorry place. Check out this by Davy Spillane - it's from "Riverdance" too! It'a a wonderful lament for a mythological Ulsterman.

I haven't a clue what "hemi-powered drones" means ! But then I drive a Yaris.

Interesting prices! I had one station offer £1.40 a litre ( 1.76 Euro or $ 2.70 - so Euro and $ must be trading very differently.) - but that was the last chance petrol saloon before the motorway.

Decided to start bussing it again this week, so I dragged out my old travel pass only to find out that it had "expired" and I had lost the £19 I had loaded on it. It was an example of how not to encourage people to use public transport !

Two great Irish guitarists. These vids are from the 70's but they are both, as we say over here, still kickin' around.
