Thanks, Jim. Selso Martinez got me started on this one, so props to him for that.

My friend, Selso Martinez, posted a picture on Facebook with the caption, "Only place that ever felt like home." I decided to turn it into the song below. https://soundcloud.com/jets60/the-only- … -like-home

Great question Ken.
I have a whole lot of songs that I think were written close to perfect, but here are three: Carole King's You're so Far Away - Townes Van Zandt's Tecumseh Valley - Steve Goodman's Would You Like to Learn to Dance? I know all these songwriters have written more "close to perfect songs", but those are fine measuring stick songs in my opinion.
Each one can sometimes bring tears to my eyes if they catch me in the right mood.

Thanks for your insights Phill. The picture, from the above soundcloud.com link, is of me, my mom, and my sister, in my early years. Most likely, it was taken on a visit to my mom's family in Texas where every visit there was an adventure.

Hey Ken - I get what you're saying, about writing just to be writing, but what I'm talking about is writing to get in the habit of writing, which means writing a bad song once in a while, or a poem, or just a letter, or just jotting down random thoughts that might make some good song material. It makes it a lot easier now with virtual paper, so no trees have been killed lately by any of my writing, both good and bad. What I've been trying now is to start writing with whatever is on my mind at the time and see where that takes me. It might not always be good writing, but it keeps the wheel moving if you know what I mean. There is nothing wrong with writing a bad song. I've written plenty of those, both in the past and since I've started writing more, but my writing habit is getting easier to keep going, and some of my writing comes out good in my opinion.

Thanks, Jim. I never thought about that but I agree; writing relaxes me too.

Re: Sowing Creativity (11 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Thanks, Ken. I've actually been writing almost every day, but I didn't want to flood the songwriting forum with all my songs, some good some bad. Some people I have been working with say that you should try to keep in the practice of writing all the time and don't worry about whether the songs are good or bad, just keep writing. The more you write the more the gates of creativity open, so I try to keep it going. I promise to add some to the forum here but I'm not going to post everything I write. That's just way too much.

Thanks, Pete and Phill. Phill, I know I could have made this into an epic song if I wanted, but I figure I should leave a little hope out there. Pete, I have your grandpa's words in my head as well keeping me going when I want to quit.

Thanks Phill - Yep, good to be back but I enjoyed my time away. I can hear that banjo as well. It's a tough balance work and music, but I'm glad you were able to maintain.

I was watching the movie Once about a talented singer songwriter trying to make it. I imagined what that must be like if I had that kind of talent. A busker's life is a tough and risky life indeed, but how is it so different from the paying job life. This song is about the paying job life.

Hey all.
Phill and I had a great time writing and working on our Barney and I recording. Phill did the tough mixing of our recordings and music and I think the whole project turned out very nice. Thanks Pete for putting the video together. It was a nice touch and presented Barney well.
