Thanks for those links Old Doll. I enjoyed the second one much more than the first. big_smile

I also like Clapton's instrumental version:

I remember that Ryder Cup - I believe the Europeans gave our boys a pretty good spanking that year. Alas, I am one of those American's who doesn't even have a passport (like you mentioned on another thread), so no I have never been to your beautiful island. I would love to visit some day though.

This is a silly thread - NELA had it right - it's all about impressing the chicks. If you say otherwise you are only fooling yourself. LOL

(this from a happily married 43 yo - And when I play, the chicks leave the room!)

But I will have groupies in the nursing home - I should be decent by then. smile

Several years ago (10 or 12), we had a family gathering at my Grandmother's house in Amityville, Long Island (NY) which was the last gathering at her home before she moved away. This was a special gathering because Grandma's house was a fixture in our lives - the place for Thanksgiving dinners and other get together's since I was an infant. TIt was a neat trip, my family traveled from Florida, others from North Carolina and upstate NY - every grandchild was there (I think the last time that has happened). Anyway - that has nothing to do with the topic, but I'm getting there, I promise.

Shortly before this gathering it was announced that the US Open would be played at Bethpage state park in 2002 (I know James - you're not fond of us golfers). This is a very difficult course and even more difficult to arrange a T-Time. City folks sleep in the parking lot all night in order to get on the course on weekends. Well my uncle pulled some strings and arranged T-times for 8 of us - we had a fantastic time, and I shot a great round. It was cool to watch the pros a few years later playing on the same course I had played.

So what does this have to do with the topic? I'm getting there big_smile

After the round, we were enjoying some cold beverages at the clubhouse. Some guy sitting a few tables away from us must have lost a bet, and suddenly stood up and belted out "Oh Danny Boy" solo a cappella in the middle of the clubhouse - It was a 2 story place with tons of windows and the acoustics were fantastic - that guy could really sing and got a standing ovation from all of the bar patrons when finished. I will never forget it.

Thanks guys - Yeagh Pix, I've seen some of the threads over on AGF - That's probably what brought the CA brand to my attention. There was one listed in the classified section, but I want to play one first before I step up. Ya know - some of threads over there showing cracked and damaged custom built 2, 3, or $5,000 guitars is what got me thinking about the CA - I would be sick if I laid out $2,500 on a git and come home to find it cracked one day.

Southpaw - I didn't know Martin made a composite - I'll have to check that out too.

I'm considering purchasing a Composite Acoustics carbon fiber guitar and was wondering if anybody here owns one or has played one.

http://www.compositeacoustics.com/

Everything I have read about them has been extremely positive. The durability factor (never need to worry about a truss rod adjustment, or humidity or travel, etc.) is what is most attractive to me and they supposedly also sound fantastic. I'm going to go try some out next weekend - closest dealer is in the mountains, might as well make a weekend out out of it.

It just seems weird, there's something about a real wood guitar - a personality that I'm afraid I might miss in a piece of carbon fiber. Thoughts / opinions?

Hi PPA and welcome to Chordie!

This strumming pattern question comes up often. If you use the search function I am sure you can find lots of info. Here's a few threads that will get you started:

http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=6513

http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4775

I used to get hung up on strumming patterns also, had some need to find an exact DDUD pattern or something - But I realized that by listening to the song and feeling the rhythm is the best way for me to get the pattern. Trying to copy an exact pattern can lead to overanylisis paralysis - feel the song and strum what sounds good (works for me anyway).

Good Luck!

Excellent James and congrats to you. Very clever lyrics as usual. Zappa would be proud to be in your company, I'm sure.

1978 - Aerosmith's Draw The Line tour.

Wasn't a great show. They messed up the intro into Dream On twice and Steven Tyler got pissed  and tossed a monitor off the stage. They must have been peaking their drug use at about that time. I remember reading a quote from Tyler years later something like - We went from musicians dabbling in drugs to druggies dabbling in music. Glad they got their act together - I have seen them many times and they seem to get better with age.

Great thread Doc - lots of good responses here, let's people get things off their chests.

I try not to hate - that's such a strong negative feeling. I like to live in the positive as much as I can. But......... I'll give a shot at naming my top 10.

1. My ex-wife - she took my kids away - far away for many years - they are close now, but I will never forgive her for taking them out of state and causing me to miss that part of their lives.

2. Taxes - I don't mind paying my fair share for necessities that can be provided by only the government, but the amount of wasteful spending (which is rampant) drives me nuts.

3. Anything UNC related (University of North Carolina) - As a NC State alum, it is ingrained in me to hate all things UNC - I would have a hard time choosing who to pull for in an Al-Quida vs. UNC basketball game.

4 through 10 - Barre chords!

500 used harmonicas - HOLY CRAP! You know - the thought of buying a used harmonica just isn't very appealing. Picturing all of the breath and spit flowing through that thing - I think I'd prefer a factory fresh one. smile

Man, but I didn't realize you could go through so many. How long does a harmonica last?

I did find several resources for repair and repair kits - not anyyone that would buy used ones, but that you could pay to have yours repaired. Just google harmonica repair - there are also kits with tools, reeds, etc if you are interested in fixing your own.

I don't play (yet), but I found the topic interesting. You learn something new every day!

Badeye - I saw a couple of those Drew Carey shows and Joe was a riot. They had formed some hotel bar band, right? Joe definitely seems like the kind of guy I'd like to have a beer with. I have a limo, ride in the trunk...lol.

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes. During a radio interview, Joe was asked about his experience when The James Gang toured with Jimi Hendrix. I don't have the exact quote, but it was something like -  I really don't remember that tour, but I know we did it - I have the poster!

That's rock-n-roll big_smile

James - Too funny, we seem to bump into each other often.  Man - I just love Ray Charles - Have the box set and listen to it often. Few singers put their whole soul into their music the way RC does. You don't just hear it, you feeeel it.

Anyway - That was great Russ, I LMAO.

But the best thing about this thread is that guitar guy link I found while searching for dmc's request. There are a ton of very cool old songs on that site.

Hi dmc - I see you've been registered for a while, but this is your first post, so welcome to the Chordie Forum!

Neither of these songs were Ray Charles' originals, so searching by songs, you may find other versions here, but here's a few links I found elsewhere:

That's a purty guitar pix - I am severely jealous of your collection. Keep that strung as a 12 for a while at least - I'd love to try it out. If I don't make it your way before it, Merlefest is less than 2 months away!
