Highly entertaining stuff, Bill ... thank you. I'd never heard of Django Reinhardt, and sampled through this album with amazement. I especially enjoyed "You Rascal, You".

Mark's Knopfler's "National" graces the cover of Dire Strait's "Brothers in Arms" album, and we're all familiar with his finger-picking it for the song "Romeo & Juliet". He was chatting about it at a concert, and referred to all of the embossing on it (palm trees, lovers, scrolling, etc.) as being vulgar. For whatever reason that's stuck with me, as I'm not entirely sure what he meant. The steel resonators are indeed beautiful, and I hope to play one some day.

These things finally arrived (Grover 106G locking tuners) and they're installed on my Les Paul. They only needed a 3/4 turn to bring it to tune, so coupled with some nut grease, it now stays in tune when using the trem. Even the opening segment of "Sorrow" by Pink Floyd didn't knock it out of tune ... good addition.

Some great results today:

Man United 3 --- Sunderland 0
Tottenham 4 --- Man City 1
Arsenal 5 --- Leicester 2
Liverpool 3 --- AstonVilla 2

Nice to see your Spurs jump up to 5th place, Norm, and I'm going to savor my guys being in first place for the moment. Don't know what's wrong with your Blues, Kodiak, but I can't imagine them staying in the lower part of the table for very long ... they've got too much talent.

If you're not careful, NELA, yer missus will be using that thing to find you "swimming with the phish's". That's top-notch sonar gear. I hope you get to use it before she lowers the curtain on ya.

Steve Hackett    "Dance on a Volcano"    London, 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0LLbkwqTiA

Another clip from the "Genesis Revisited" tour, with this song from the "Trick of the Tail" album, the first one released after the departure of Peter Gabriel. Phil Collins provided lead vocals to the group from that time forward. I always thought Phil's voice was a little "thin" although there's no arguing with the success of his career. In this version, I honestly feel that vocalist Nad Sylvan does a better job on this number than Phil did ... more expression, more power, etc. And Hackett's guitar playing continues to inspire me. The entire album was based on nursery rhyme themes, all incorporated into the character line-up on the cover art by Colin Elgie:

Norm ... good luck to your Spurs tomorrow against Man City. Of course I'm for their win (as well as a Man U win against Sunderland) 'cuz that'll vault my lads into first place. Did you see Bournemouth's Matt Ritchie score against Sunderland recently? One of the best goals I've ever seen ... absolutely brilliant skill:

That some smooth blues on the "py-anny" for a change ... loved it, Badeye!

Is this the one JJJ?

Reminds me of the one Jimmy Page used to play "back in the day". I had an Epiphone version of it around my neck once, and it's a good chunk o' lumber. I'm just glad they've never done a double-neck Les Paul or Thunderbird ... ugh!

And as far as your continuing compulsion to acquire guitars goes, I think you have the healthiest case of G.A.S. I've ever seen.

Happy NGD, Graham!

I looked your rig up on Rickenbacker's site, and that's a real beauty for sure:

http://www.rickenbacker.com/images/620.jpg

I recall watching a "rig rundown" clip of Chris Squire, explaining the dual output jacks on his Rick bass. He said he ran one output straight to the first input on his amp for the pure sound of the guitar itself. He then ran the second chord through his effects setup, then to the second input on his amp. In this way, he could layer the natural sound with the modified sound, without compromising either one. Made some sense, and his signature sound is well known over his years with YES.

Congrats buddy ... have fun with it!

Never had a wound string break UJB, but have broken a few high E's and B's. It happened when I was installing them usually, as I don't strike them hard when playing, and use a fairly thin pick (0.73mm).

Wow, Bill ... that was some performance! I don't recall ever seeing anyone score 5 goals in a match, let alone doing it in 9 minutes. Manager Guardiola is either looking like a putz (for not starting him) or a genius (for putting him on after the halftime break). Either way, it's memorable. I recall Ruud van Nistelroy scoring 4 in a match about 10 years ago (or more) for Man U, although I can't recall who the "victims" were.

Kodiak ... thanks for telling about your journey towards being a "soccer" fan. I played during school years, but never started following pro leagues (EPL, UEFA, Bundesliga, etc.) until I began coaching U18 boys in 1996. It also wasn't a sport that received much television coverage in North America, until more recent years. I started watching simply to learn about formations, strategies, set pieces, etc., but soon fell in love with the game itself on a whole new level.

Badeye ... I also enjoyed that match. Lots of points scored against a high-priced defensive line. I know the Pat's have been branded as cheaters lately, but they're in good company, i.e., all the other 31 NFL teams. Check out this website for entertainment:

Congrats to Bayern-Munich for the 3-0 victory over Darmstadt yesterday. They were pretty much in complete control of the whole match.

That was a chippy affair yesterday between Chelsea & Arsenal, eh? I think Arsene Wenger did well to keep his composure at the post-match press conference. The officiating was very lop-sided against him, and Diego Costa seemed to be able act like a jerk with impunity. How he keeps getting away with whacking people in the face like this is beyond me! I'd like to see him try treating guys like Kompany, Lukaku, or Gomis like this ... he'd be flattened immediately.

My guys from Man United take on Southampton today, and a win will vault them into 2nd place once the weekend's over. Taking the telephone off the hook for this one!

NELA ... really want to thank you for some great tips; I'll have to curb my enthusiasm when it arrives. Thanks, buddy!

Fortunately, it's travelling laterally and not longitudinally (sp?) so it shouldn't be encountering too much variation in temperature. I also ordered the deluxe, archtop case made for it for extra protection ... any decent instrument deserves a proper case IMHO. Hopefully that increases its chances of getting here in one piece.

For an update, it arrived in Montreal yesterday. This is like playing "Where's Waldo?"

The only people I blame for war are the people who insist on imposing their will on others at gunpoint. Using cultural values, political positions, religion, social structure or anything else is just a sociopathic excuse they use to justify it. With that said, there are times when military action is needed to defend my home or the helpless from tyranny. For those brave men and women who are willing to do that, I have the very highest esteem.
