hi lisa

welcome to the site.

the number you ask about is the fret. i.e when you see the chord chart and it shows where to put your fingers and it has a number, this is where you start the chord from.

So if you see a chord that looks like the same pattern as an F but it has the number 2 next to it then it will be Bm. ( or thereabouts)

hmm, hope that makes sense ( it is first thing in the morning, just out of bed, hardly any sleep and can still taste the whisky)

good song but definetly not punk!!

no punk attitude in there.

but then the clash were the punk and quite a few of thier songs if I did not know it was them, you would say they were not punk, same as a few songs from stiff little fingers. And even the damned and all other big punk names.

But when you see that guy and his band on that clip, you just know they are not punk.

I would disagree that marc bolan was writing punk rock music, he was more of glam rock and led the way for other glam artists. Although I think there were quite a few other glammies about before him.

Punk rock is ( and I think I said it before) not really a style of music but an attitude brought out on music.

So, therefore the people to lead the way would be ( even though not rock music) the likes of eddie cochran, johnny cash, syd barrett, even elvis.

And there will be lots more from the late 50's and early 60's. All those "hellraisers" for their time. They might seem very tame now but back when these people started out they done outragsous things.

Punk rock, really is rock, rock music came from the rockabilles etc, and that dervied from blues.

We have the orignial blues people for the music we have today.

thats what i tihnk anyway.

so, punk came from the blues even though one is laid back sad songs and the other is anti establishment songs.

another buzz it might be if it is not coming thru the amp is maybe the nutt ( knut, nut?) it might be damaged.

for a temp, a very temporary repair put a bit of paper under the D string at the nutt.

Is it called a nut? the part where the strings are guided before they reach the tuning pegs?

or the other way round, inbetween the tuning pegs and the fret board?

you know what i mean anyway.

thanks vince,

yep the strings have settled down a lot, I can pick it up and play without having to retune it every song.

I dont know this song but I might dowload it and listen, and if i like it then i might even learn it.

I dont know about a uke for crimbo yet, the woman that must be obeyed is atlkaing about getting me a scotland football top , which I cannot argue with either, so if I get that I either wait til feburary for a new uke or just go out and buy one,lol

GCSE is the grades you get in the UK.

I think it stands for general cetrificate in standard education? If not then looks bloody good to me,lol

I got a few of them, but my grades are called 'O ' grades, before the GSCE's came in

so a song ?

depends on how good you are at playing but if you are good at finger picking then might I sugest " tears in heaven" by Eric Clapton. I have heard one guy ( apart from Mr Clapton ) doing this and it sounds amazing. No slide in it thought, but ye might be able to put a slide in? not too sure, but certainly for finger picking, this song is superb.

Ken

p.s. Good luck, but you got months before you do it, so start practicing

who inspired me to play? hmmm, well this is ion electric sectino and i dinny play electric, but I I was inspired to play the electric bass first ( my first instrument before I went onto acoustic guitar) by bruce foxton from the Jam and from ali from stiff little fingers. thos two bass players in the early 80's made me want to do music, and I thin k iwil go send Ali an e mail just now and tell him since I have never told him yet. I told Bruce though somtime last year when I was chatting online with him. funnily enough Bruce took over as Bass player in stiff little fingers in the early 90's.

hmm, thats weird, never really thought of this before.

Fis, ???? never saw that either

train kept a rollin  aerosmith

the boxer , by simon and garfunkel ( was wrote at preston train station in england and mentions train)

this is a question that is getting asked more and more recently about strumming patterns and I still cant see the big attraction to them.

Sorry, but I dont know these songs but maybe if you listen to the song and play along withit, you should get the strumming pattern within minutes.

Thats what I do if I need to know the strumming pattern, or do it your own style.

Ken

and in response to the two of you ,lol

My wife can improvise along with my playing, " wild rover, irish rover, fileds of athenry, black velvet band, and a few rock songs.

She has been playing for about 18 months or so.

NOW, her violin tutor who has been playing for maybe 30 years says she cannot improvise and is jealouos of Lynda ( me mrs). Her tutor is the head person in a orchestra calleed Bearsden Fiddlers. The dont play fiddle music though, the yall read from the notes in front. Some experienced players have said they are lost without the music in front of them and indeed my wife is when she tries to play the scottish songs that the Bearsden fiddlers play.

Also ( not a stringed instrument) I know a woman that is in the scottish national orchestra that plays the flute fantastically but she cannot improvise at all, eventhough she has tried and tried. She gets thru about half a song at most then stops.

So I would say for some people on certain types of music, some people need the music in front, others dont.

good advice!!

also if buying a guitar online I personally would only buy a very expensive one. One that I knew was a good make with a good tone. But I would only buy online if I really really had to.

yeah, it would be nice wouldnt it, but  idont know if this would be possible since chordie is a search engine for songs from other sites. You might have to go to all the other sites and tell them  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">

I find most songs I look at have got the complete song. I look for songs with the lyrics and chords, are you looking mostly for tabs? I find songs with tabs are not full songs.

but maybe something could be added? it would be good to see. Maybe a wee box to click on a choice like you said " lyrics and chords" tabs only" lyrics and tabs" song not complete" etc.

like bootlaggger says, depends on how often you play, and how hard you play, strumming hard or plucking.

But I would reckon after a year whether it got played or not is long enough for any guitar to have the same strings on.

I play daily, even if for one song or 5 minutes, but usually at least 3 songs a day up to 60 ( depending if i have company in and how much whisky i have drank  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">  )

I change my strings about once every 2 or 3 months, which means I need to change mine again, thnk it has been 4 months.

Also, if you snap a string, you are better replacing the 6 of them rather than just one.

Right, now I have had it a week or so now  iwould like to say, Not what I expected at all. A bit more laid back for the who but then they are in their 60's now.

BUT, what a magnificent album and doesnt matter the age ( well maybe for the vocals, lol) the guitar playing is tremendious, very good guitar work in it.

If people like acoustic sounding great guitar playing then this is the cd to get and learn. I am not good enough to play what pete townshend plays but that doesnt stop me loving his playing.

4.897 out of 5 score from me

good idea jace,

I tihnk this would help others ( not me though as I play my own style on every song I do nearly)

But who would sit down and type out strumming patterns? I know I am too lazy to do this,  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_razz.gif" border=0 alt="Razz">

but good idea if people contribute to it

punk?????? I love lots of punk...

the older stuff though, the real punk.

although, really there is no such a thing as punk style rock as such. It is rock music with punk attitude. Punk is not so much of a style as it is an attitude.

The clash ( godfathers of punk) are completely different to the sex pistols, then theres toy doys completely different from green day.

all classed as punk. Punk is the sort of lyrics they write, the meaning behind the lyrics.

punk bands I like are ( in no particular order)

Stiff little fingers ( influenced greenday heavily)

Drop kick murphys ( just back from their concert 15 minutes ago with less than jake)

The clash

dead kennedy's ( but in small doses)

the alarm ( in big doses)

sex pistols

undertones

the jam ( although some consider mod, but again, no such a thing as mod music, it is again rock but different dress style)

the macc lads

and quite a few more but after quite a few pints I cannot remember right now,lol

iggy pop, the pixies, skids, greenday yeah ok stopping now

I was going to say, what a strange question but then i thought about it and it is not that strange really.

Hmm,

only thing I can think of is get a bit of wood or plastic that resembles a part of a fret board and draw where the strings should be.

Or buy yourself a wee travel guitar. A cheap one so you dont mind if it gets bashed about.then you can sytill play, practice and keep your fingers moving

hi

I have no idea what elixir strings are but what might have made the difference was the gauge of the strings.

I use extra light gauge strings as I find them very easy to hold down and I like the sound better.

But if you dont like the sound of light gauge or extra light or even medium gauge string, stick with the heavier ones. Your fingers will soon youghen up to be little pads at the tips and you will find it just as easy to hold a chord. But if you dont play for a week or two after they have toughened right up, you will find the pain coming back again
