Vigon, Welcome to the"Best " site in the internet. I have two suggestions. 1. A guitar that feels right in your hand and that has correct set up.- string height set for optimum playability. If it plays easy you will stay with the learning process. 2. Zurf's number 4- Attitude and desire to play is everything. If you "Want" to play and learn every day you will learn to play. Everything Zurf said is true, you are going to want to give up and you will be frustrated. But stick with it and you will be more than happy the rest of your life. Many of us started out just like you and 40 years later are still strumming away. And loving every minute we do.
Best of luck on your journey.

UJB, Eastman are very nice instruments. I was considering an Eastman mandolin before I came across my Morgan Monroe. I love the F-style. And the repair on the headstock, That won't affect the tone or playabilty at all. Great deal.
I bought my MM mandolin thru a small town music store because it was a great deal. I do as much business with a small shop close to my home as I can. I like to support the little guy as much as I can.
Enjoy your NMD !!!

Joe , I think the only difference is there could be some tone difference's. Also you can get round (Oval) or F-holes on both models which can give tonal differences. Mostly it's preferences in body shape. My first Mandolin was a Maya copy of a Martin. A- style round sound hole, very loud. My Dean and MM both are F-style, Just my preference. My friend had a Fender F-style with factory pickup. The Fender played and sounded good but pickup buzzed and hummed when plugged in. He got rid of that one. There are a lot of good, easy on the budget mandolins out there so enjoy the journey. I play in a band and use my low to mid range mando's  and I always get compliments on how good they sound. My MM is my main mando when I play out. I know you will find one that will fit the bill for you.

Joe, Alverez is a step up, they make some nice instruments. I have a Dean mandolin and a Morgan Monroe. The Morgan Monroe came with a nice hard case and it sounds very nice. Both easy on the budget. In the end if it sounds good is easy to play and the cost is right for you then I say buy it. Mandolin is not difficult to play, just a new tuning and chord positions.
Have fun with it.

Nela , sounds like a nice guitar. I hope it's what you are looking for. I had a Takamine and liked it a lot . Very easy to play. I just heard Taylor has a new 12 string a 110e. It has the lower expression system of electronics and goes for about $699 with gig bag. I haven't seen or played one yet. But good luck Nela and keep us posted.

Roger, Been thinking about getting one myself. I'm looking for something lighter than my Bose L1 to haul to small gigs. Tell me how  you like it.
From all I've seen and heard on YouTube most all that have one really like them. Congrats !!!

Glad to hear you have a good paying gig. Most people don't realize how much work goes into preparing for a gig. Hours of learning songs, instrument cost and prep, sound systems. I always say you are renting my equipment because you can't afford my hourly rate. Any way have fun. If you have fun your audience will enjoy the show. One tip I can give you . If you think no one is listening , find one person who is and play to that one person. It will get you through a slow night and at least one person will truly enjoy what you do. It also makes for a rewarding night for yourself. Just have fun.

I've thought about this for a long time and really can't decide myself. But how about these. Les Paul's , Les Paul. Paul McCartney's Hofner Bass. Neil Young's Les Paul Blackie. Eric Clapton's Fender Strat Blackie.

I kind of agree with TF. Most of everything that is written today can probably be tied to some other song. There are only so many melodies and progressions to go around. As a song writer I know it's hard to stay away from some melody that may have already been used. As far as Jimmy Page goes the songs are different to a point. The big catch for me is the song he stole from was titled Stairway. His song Stairway To Heaven even copped off the name. I guess I'd almost have to side against Jimmy.
What about John Fogarty being sued for copying his own song. He went to court and won.

I mentioned this tuning method about a year ago after watching the same video. After thinking about it a long time,  I have to question if it's something more relevant to his guitar. Guitars as the wood ages can change somewhat. So is his guitar evolving over the years ? Years of traveling, humidity changes, stress on the wood components, and what ever else affects wood put together is this manner.  Would he tune a new guitar the same way ? Would it sound the same ? He doesn't say enough about how he decided on this method. My friends 10 year old Martin D-45 on the low E string must be played just below the fret or the note is not in pitch. It's that way all the way up the neck. Just that string. The guitar didn't start out that way. Maybe this would work on that string ? I'm not against this method and I know JT has a very interesting thought process and I respect that. I'd just like to know more about why he decided to tune this way. If anyone tries it let us know.

I know how you guys are feeling. I have a new computer with Windows 8. I absolutely hate it. I can't use any of my CD booklet making programs. For me that's big income during the summer months. And after 3 months I still can't get them to work. I have a Handy Share video program that worked fine on XP and very easy to use  and upload to youtube. Microsoft Movie Maker hijacked that program and now I can't upload anything to youtube. It tells me editing is not complete. But it won't help direct me to complete the editing.  Very frustrating !  I'm not the brightest computer mind but I have been able to use all these programs in the past. I even have notes to help me through seldom used programs and they all worked on XP. I'm at the point where I want to dump all my computer stuff. I just can't be without my Chordie. It's my last island of hope.
Sorry for venting.

Russell, great song and nice performance. I agree with Phil, a loaded up version would sound like the Big Hair bands of the 80's. It has that sound a great rock band could use. And I'm sure you could put some killer licks in there. My friend and I often record two versions of some of our songs. We do an acoustic version we call Back Porch version and a loaded up version with percussion ,bass, lead and what ever ,we call it Up Town version. Just something to think about. Again very nice.

Zurf, I'm all for family friendly. I can't wait for you to write it. Keep us posted.

I hate those people with big Ego's.  They don't remember when they were starting out. We all have to get and build confidence. I hosted an open mic for 2 1/2 years and anyone who wanted to jam at the end of the night could. It didn't matter what level player you were as long as you wanted to play your were welcome. I had one guy who thought he was King Sh*# . He tried to run over on his allotted time. After the 2nd song over I just shut down the sound system. He got P-O ed with me . I told him the open mic wasn't all about him, It was all the other performers who showed up. He never returned. His loss. Don't let those type of people bother you . There are better folks out there to jam with.

Great, Good for you ! A whole new world is out there waiting for you. Enjoy all of it. You are going to learn and grow so much by joining in.
Have fun.
