June will be a busy month for me. I will travel every weekend and be out of the country from the 17th to the end of the month. I am excited and anxious which is always the case for me. No new locations but two weeks in Eastern Europe will be both old and new. The BIG question is do I take my "travel guitar" with me? I think the answer must be YES. A whole month without playing? Unthinkable.

You may have noticed, June 17th is Father's Day and yes I leave the country on that day. If I am not ostracized for this untimely departure I'm considering "asking" for guitar lessons, or at least a start to them. One CAN teach an old dog new tricks but I think it might be easier if the dog has help. My goal? I'm glad you asked. I think my goal might be to join my virtual friends here at Chordie for one of them there virtual jams using the new-fangled and space-age information superhighway. I will mail each of you a set of foam ear plugs for the benefit of all. Heck, I might even wear a pair!

Next weekend I travel to Dayton, Ohio to attend my brother's retirement from the Air Force Reserve. I want to give him a gift for this occasion and have pretty much decided he's getting an acoustic guitar. (He doesn't play yet and I will admit this idea was partially inspired by our good virtual friend, Zurf.)

So I've been on the hunt for the "right" guitar for about two months. I have a few in my sights for purchase. My back-up plan is to give him one of my guitars. I am probably over-thinking this but I want to maximize the chance of success, which for me, means he shows at least some interest and begins a new journey. I am willing to accept the fact he may not pursue this but I think the gamble is worth it for both of us.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks, same to all.

My brother/sister/father are in town and we spent time together for the first time in many years. The best of times!

The highlight: watching my dad slay a raccoon with a broom handle. Hilarious in a dark way. Don't tell PETA!

About a year ago I signed up for the epiphany-of-the-week club. In case you’re unfamiliar with this club let me explain. It is a no-cost, quasi-random way to have ideas, aha moments, etc. poked into your life. This club is a more fun than the law should allow and has proven so effective that I occasionally must stop everything just to consider the possibilities. I can’t tell you how many times they’ve introduced and idea to me while driving causing me to pull to the side of the road and stop so I could ponder. In fact, they have the uncanny ability to catch me off guard every time but almost always when I am (or should be) doing something else: listening to a church sermon, studying, working, driving, and yes, playing the guitar.

Today while playing, sitting on my ottoman cross-legged quietly picking out notes on my guitar, EOTW slapped me in the face with this gem: what if all the conversations, debates, rants, and axle-wrappage over guitar brands, woods, strings, and guitar specifications simple didn’t matter? What if, at the end of the day, the sounds (for me), the music (for others), are the only things that matter? What if the only thing that mattered in guitar-playing was player and the listener - which could be the same person?

With this poke I put my guitar on its stand and sat quietly for several minutes. This thought is hardly new or even original but it was mine now. What to do with it? Play on; business as usual? Pick one guitar and sell the rest? Give up the guitar entirely and admit defeat? Buy more guitars? Introduce other non-players to the guitar and music? Write something? Sing something? Play something? Sit quietly? Hammer out a 900 calorie run?

The epiphany-of-the-week club is free and there are other variants such as epiphany-of-the-year/month/day/minute/second but I found the weekly frequency the best choice for me. I encourage all of you to consider joining this club. It is satisfying and rewarding, and you might just find the answers to many of the heretofore imponderables in life. Let me know how it goes.

Variations on a theme. My daughter graduates from high school tomorrow (Saturday). She is the class president. For a prank, some students moved a large metal horse sculpture from the school's courtyard to the Principal's parking spot. While I don't think my daughter was directly involved it was LOL funny to me. I know the principal well and I could just see his face when he arrived.

This prank was a hat tip to the principal as he is well-liked and had asked that no damage occur or clean-up be required of whatever prank was proffered. I think they succeeded. For reference, two years ago someone put a dead deer on top of the covered walkway. No one understood this prank.

I've never been overly impressed with Takamines, at least not the new ones. But to each his own. I do recommend staying the course towards your Martin purchase if that's what you ultimately want. Anything else will only be temporarily satisfying.

How about: "Can I ask you a question?"

I always answer, "You just did."

Is it just me or has Youtube really deteriorated? For me Youtube is almost unusable any more. So many ads, increasingly difficult navigations, etc. I find myself using it less and less.

It could be I'm outside of the target audience.

You'll have to listen to this a few times to appreciate the subtlety and beauty of this song but it's worth it.

Happy Mother's Day to all moms. And for everyone else who has a mom, make sure they hear from you. This is my first Mother's Day without my mom so I'll spend a few minutes strolling down Amnesia Lane thinking about fond memories.

J3,

You didn't ask but here's what I can tell you.

FG-331
1977-1981
000 body
truss rod adjusted from the headstock
inlay down the center of the back

SJ-180
1981-1985
000 body
truss rod adjusted from within the sound hole
no inlay down the back

Other then that I think they are the same

Before the FG-331 was the FG-150 and before that was the FG-110. The later had back/sides made from agathis not mahogany.

J3,
The Yamaha SJ-180 is a great guitar. I've owned two. This past week I narrowly escaped GAS and passed on a nice used FG-331 - the predecessor to the SJ-180. I really like the 000-esque body size and these guitars defy the common opinion regarding the substandard sound of all-laminate guitars. These guitars sound good!

If you're interested in something possibly more special than the SJ-180, get your hands on a SJ-400S. This is the solid-top version. You will rarely find anything about these but there are a few out there.

I also owned a CJ-818 - the jumbo all-laminate - a great guitar as well. A glimpse of mine can be found on my YouTube Channel. i think it's in my first "Noodleroni" installment.

But, yes, the SJ-180 is a fantastic guitar.

p.s. I've been talking to the seller of an FG-110.  It is the original folk body which led to the SJ-180, etc. This one was made in 1970.
p.p.s: J3, what the heck are you  doing up at 3:38am?

I did it! I resisted GAS. I've had my eye out for a specific model guitar for some time. Well one appeared locally on CL last night. I sent the seller an note unwittingly securing my place at the head of the "buyer's line". I slept on it and today I called the seller and told them i would pass. I thanked her for being honorable and waiting for me to decide before she pursued other potential buyers. She didn't have to and I'd never ask a seller to do so although I do sort of expect it and I do the same thing.

I like the Beastie Boys.

One look at their first album cover, "License to Ill", and the fact the aircraft tail number, when viewed in a mirror, revealed a "secret message" is all it took. The message? You'll have to figure that out yourself, this is a PG forum.

RIP MCA.

Glad you got a laugh!

That paragraph comes from Jane Austen's "Guitars and Prejudice" . . . the part where the proud and condescending Darcy brings his Martin GPCPA4 (sapele back and sides!) to a ball at Netherfield, and then makes fun of Miss Bennet's Luna guitar while celebrating his own guitar's tonal purity.

But wait, there's more...and it gets better! Hilarious. Thanks.

Looks good, but wait!  What's this? "Sapele Back & Sides."  SAPELE??!! Never, sir. I'd rather stuff my girlish heart with chestnuts, wrap it in bacon, and have it fed to common curs, than purchase a guitar with even a hint of sapele!  Let us never speak of this monstrous wood again!!

M.B. The FUNNIEST thing i've read in a while! Where do you come up with this stuff?

I'm probably the only man over 40 listening to Jessie J's album "Who You Are".

And an album by 'Of Monsters and Men"

Yuengling no more. I cannot drink this beer. Apparently I am hyper-allergic to it. within minutes my sinuses are running like a faucet and I will sneeze for the rest of the night. In the last year or so some beers have started to affect me like this but especially Yuengling. A decent beer otherwise IMO.

Bourbon does NOT affect me this way but has other side affects most of which are predictable if not desired.

Crack or no crack this might be a good deal. There's got to be more to the story don't you think. Maybe the back is missing or the neck is "removable"?

Ugh! is right. Zurf, I feel your pain.

My washing machine repair a few weeks ago resurfaced today when the laundry room and basement were flooded! Apparently while I was fiddling with the machine I inadvertently caused a vacuum line to begin working it's way loose. So today, after three weeks and many loads of laundry, it came off the water level switch basically telling it the drum was not full yet, not full yet. Holy crap! What a mess.

Our AC vents are in the floor so the one in the laundry room provided a perfect escape for God knows how much water. My AC return air line filled with water and then began leaking in the basement. Ceiling tiles destroyed, furniture and carpet wet, and my BRAND NEW AC unit may be damaged.

Of course I had no way of knowing what my day would offer this morning while my daughter and I enjoyed an 8 mile run. I ran right into a mess which has absorbed the day and all my energy. The water-remover people are still here. Help me Ronda!

Man I could use a still drink but I'm afraid I'd fall asleep on the couch. I need these guys to leave first.

So Zurf, I raise a virtual glass of Woodford Reserve Bourbon to you.

p.s. I almost forgot an additional near disaster. One of my guitars got wet. Mainly the headstock and the first 5-6 frets. I dried it off. No harm done. Whew!
