flester, tried to open up your photo link but couldn't see the photo. As for the pickguard material, do you even need it? Never known a lapsteel player to do any hard and fast strumming, just controlled fingerpicking and slide work. So why cover up (again couldn't see the photo) a good looking piece of wood? Just my thought's but if you do decide to install a pickguard use a material color that will complement the finish of the lap steel.

Hey, Cam. How the heck ya been? Not as active as I once was and kinda limited on what I can and cannot do. I do watch a lot of TV. I have to pee a lot so I do get exercise walking from the reclyner to the bathroom and back. Been wanting to go hunting but haven't been yet. Same with phishing. Got a doctor's appointment on Friday so I guess I'll get outside for a little while, may even get a haircut. Been looking at a stack of firewood in the yard that needs splitting - it's still there. Looks like I may be discussing 2 more surgeries with my doctors when I go back to Houston in December (#15 and 16) for hernia's. Other than that things are just peachy.

And I think this makes 1000 posts!!!!
No, I didn't make the post just to have a "pity party". I just feel so lucky to have gotten this far and still being able to do stuff for myself. Most day's I do feel bad but it is due to the after affects of the medicine driving my blood sugars higher that a giraffe's butt. And I did manage to get 2 sticks of wood split, today.
At this rate I should be through by Thanksgiving.
Nela
The party is at Roger's house, ya'll come!!!!!

Happy Birthday to you
Welcome, Andy. I see that you have been going back in time and reading the old posts. This thread started in March of this year. No matter as the old threads are just as good a read as the new posts. I played guitar as a young teenager, 13 / 14 years, then quit for a short period. I restarted again at the tender age of 54 when I discovered my wife could sing. I mostly sit at home and play a tune or two through out the day and we play out with a group 2 nights a month. You're never too old start learning as long as you have the passion and desire.

Ya'll don't take what I posted the wrong way. Everything is good. I have great family support, a real good team of doctors and lots of friends. Most days I don't feel well but most of that is due to the side affects of the medicine I'm having to take. I'm still active although not as much as I once was. Right now my boat is hooked up to my truck and I'm thinking about going fishing. My son is sitting here in my living room wanting to know if I want to go bow hunting with him in the morning. I'm going to do one of the other. My wife and I just got home from playing music with friends.I just checkrd my blood sugar and it was 306 which is very high and I don't feel well. I have a huge pile of firewood that needs splitting and stacking. My yard is due for a mowing. I need to trim my horses feet. So theres plenty to do. I ain't going to let a little thing like cancer get the best of me.

Something only my immeadiate family knows (and I've not told anyone else) is that I was told in September of 2012 that due to the stage 4 kidney cancer I had maybe 2 years to live without surgury. This was by my local Oncolgy doctor. I was luckly enough to be able to get into a Clinical Trail with M D Anderson Hospital for consulation and surgury. After 14 hours on the operating table and having one of my kidney's, my spleen and part of my pancreas removed I thought I might be back on the road to recovery, Then the doctors at M D Anderson told me that I should be getting my a affairs in order as the prognosis was no more than 2 years. This was in November of 2012. So I guess I am now on borrowed time. Stage 4 cancer is when it attaches to one organ then moves and attaches to other organs. My cancer was located on my left kidney and had grown to the size of a cabbage, attached to my pancreas, in my lungs and lymph nodes. During the surgury my spleen got torn and would not stop bleeding so it was removed. Per the doctors at M D Anderson my lungs are now clear and the cancer in my lymph is shrinking. So I am now on borrowed time. Being able to get out and cut my own fire wood makes me feel good regardless of how tired and sore I am, now. I know the wimmem folk in my life are only fussing because they care. I just gotta do what I gotta do. Today I hurt all over and it feels GOOD!

Ya'll all know of my health issues from recent post. Well, yesterday morning I'm sitting in my chair, bored, when I looked over at our wood burning heater. Then I went outside and looked at the firewood I had remaining from last year. From there I decided I needed more firewood for this winter. Since no was here to tell me NO I go out, get my chain saw, climb on my tractor and to the back of the pasture I go. There was a nice red oak tree that had been blown down by a early summer storm and it had seasoned nicely. I went to work with the saw and got the trunk all "limbed" and ready for cutting. I layed out the trunk for 18 to 20" lengths and started cutting in sections to contain 4 to 5 good sticks of wood. After I cut these sections I used the tractor and a "gin" pole to drag the lengths of wood back to the house. After I drug up all the lengths of wood I started cutting everything to the proper lengths. So now I got about a chord and a half of wood "butts" that all need splitting. I decided to quit and go clean up before my wife came home from work plus I was give out. My wife comes home, we sit and talk for a while and then she decides to go out in the backyard and see's all the cut wood, and the battle beging.
She began chewing me out ROYALLY. Next, my 83 year old Mother show's up and it starts all over again. It wasn't looking good for me. Since my Mother was at my house and she has to drive past my Mother - In - Law's house to get to mine, here she comes. I'm an growed man with all the hair in the proper places to prove it getting my butt chewed out by 3 different wimmen folk. Not a good picture. This morning, I get out of bed and I'm so stiff and sore from yesterdays activities I can hardly move. All morning long I'm trying to act like nothing is wrong, sneaking arount my wife so see doesn't see me hoping she will leave early for work so I can suffer in peace. I think I'll sit in the recliner all day, today. Wait, we are supposed to play music, tonite. Oh. I'm so tired.

Welcome, Ms Hightower. If I understand your question correctly you are having trouble keeping up with the fast songs. Your not going to like my answer but more practice is what you need. Ask your music director for a set list for your next church service. Get a recording for the songs you need help with and practice it over and over until you can play those songs effortlessly. Another option is to get a metrodome and practice your scales. Set the metrodome slow at first then speed it up a little at a time. All of this will take time and effort on your part. Try this and keep us informed on your progress. Inquiring minds would like to know.

Welcome, Alikays100. Gotta ask you a couple of questions before you start working on your guitar's saddle.
1. Why do you think your saddle needs lowering?
2. What about the nut? Does it need lowering as well?
3. What about a truss rod adjustment?
4. With such a wide varity of good acoustic guitar strings available, why use
electrics?
5. Have you tried a lighter guage string? This could make a big difference.
If you can't answer these questions yourself you need the advice of a qualified
guitar tech. If you do decide to do this all by yourself, remerber, take little baby steps. Once you file away too much off the bridge or saddle they are ruined and you will need to start over. This is a task worth knowing but get yourself educated prior attempting this repair. It'll save you a lotta frustration.

It's just after 8:00am, I'm up and logged in looking for spamers. Took 13 different pills and 2 different shots this morning and still feel like crap. Will take 4 more additional shots thru the day and another 8 different pills at bedtime. Some good days and some bad day's. Today is starting out not so good.
Nela
Well dodo. When I got on there was no spam and no reports to read and take care of so I did have an easy day. Keep up the good work guy's and guy'ses.
nela
that we were spam free this morning? Feel's good to wake up, enjoy a good cup of coffee and catch up on whats going on in the world of CHORDiE without all the spam trash. don't it. Ya'll notice that BGD thinks TD called him a "NERD"? (Music Theory Thread). Sure hope BGD ain't sitting in a dark room by himself with his bottom lip quivering. Come on out and play, BGD, it'll be alright.

The older country and blues music. It all tells a story that you've either lived or can imagine living. And most of the tunes are catchy, as well.

Grah, not sure how it's work as a portable pa system as it kinda looks like a whiskey still. As a
word of caution, though, go with a copper pot. The galvanized metal is poision for a still. My dad's family was moonshiners and as a point of fact - if you drink enough 'shine all music will sound good.
From the looks of the sound equipment you don't need power or a string of cables to make the system work.

was married 44 years, today. How she done it, I don't know but I'm glad she did.

Good job. 3 chords are all you need as long as they are played well and in the right key for your (singers) voice. With the proper use of a capo those 3 chords can open up thousands of songs for you. Just don't stop here, playing guitar is a never ending journey of learning.

Couple of other points to consider, Scott. You mentioned the "Union" - do they offer any type of "re-training" services? Even if they don't what about taking some classes to help make you stronger in your field. You shiould know what your strong and weak points are. Improve the weak points and polish up the strong points. Or just look into a different field. Don't forget your unemployment benifits. I know Texas unemployment pay's better than Louisiana's does. It's your money, you've already earned it, so draw it.

Sad to hear. Been there and done that, myself. My advice is to plan for the worst and hope for the best. If you had a 401k or some other plan thru work reasearch how to protect it and/or roll it over into a new employeer's program. If you are are 58 1/2 years old you can "tap" your 401K with out having to pay any penalities - you will have to pay taxes, though. If you had life insurance thru work you can change that over into a private policy. (this is a good thing and usually cheaper than finding a private policy). If you don't change this insurance into a private policy and you have had it for several years, ask if there is any "cash value" you can get . Start now putting together a resume together, right now!!! This is something you can do yourself or hire others to do for you. I've used Careerbuilders.com successfully a couple of time to find jobs and get my resume out on the job market. Its not easy and will turn into work. Searching for jobs online is not difficult, once you have a resume put together and you can save it on your desktop, then copy and paste it to your online application. Getting out and "beating" the bushes in person is difficult as you will get a lotta in person "brush-offs. Stay positive. If I can give you any advice, just holler and I'll try. Remember there are people out there with a pickup truck, a trailor, lawn mowers / lawn equipment and a few helpers that are grossing a well over a $100,000.00 per year. There's jobs out there, you just have to find them. STAY POSITIVE>
