Hey Rebel, talk about new Southern Rock bands, if you don't know them, you have to check out Black Stone Cherry.  They're out of a real small town--Edmonton, Ky and the drummers dad was in the Kentucky Headhunters.  Anyway, they're high gain southern rock monsters.  Just google their name and you'll get their web site--the video for Lonely Train (on youtube) absolutely rocks.

Cake is one of my favorite bands--don't know if they're original, or I just can't catogorize them.  Just a wierd, in a good way, synthisis of a lot of different styles.

Southpaw, have you ever heard of the band Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies?  Their whole spiel is to punk out "normal" songs, broadway tunes, standards--it's very, very fun stuff.  If you like to rip into Air Supply, you'll deffinitely like these guys.

I played my acoustic for 5 years before I got my electric--just a few months ago.  I remember hitting my first chord...and it was wierd, the sound was coming from across the room...not from the insturment.  I know, you're all saying "duh" it's an ELECTRIC guitar; the sound comes from the amp!  But with my acoustic, there is this organic quality to the playing experience....the sound is coming from the insturment...seems to be resonating from me, sometimes.  There's this intmacy with my acoustic that I don't know if I'll get from my electric.  Don't get me wrong, I love to crank up the gain and go crazy...but I have to say I'm an acoustic guy.

I don't know if I play better because of chordie, but I do have more confidence since becoming a regular on the site.  Honestly, I had (have) this inferiority complex--never thought my playing was good enough, but what's cool about this site is everyone is so honest...seems like everyone is just on this journey to get better--it's not a destination we ever arive at, we're just at different points.
I also love the fact that music breaks down language / cultural / age divisions we see normally--I love the diversity of people on this site.

Congratulations on your anniversery!!  I have 21 years under my belt...but that's with two different wives so I don't think that's the same thing....
What's the old joke "I've had problems with both my wives, the first one left me and the second one hasn't."
And your guitar can be your emotional / spiritual voice...it's not just a thing--it say's what you're feeling, so no, I think it's a great thing that you miss your guitar.  I've only been playing for 5 years, and I don't know what I did before--not so much with my time, but I mean as an outlet.

guitardoc, always enjoy your posts.  And I agree with you, this is a very nice site.  There is so much ego on the other guitar sites it seems--everyone trying to be better than the next person, putting each other down, when in my way of thinking, we should be helping eachother out.  Not interested in the "you suck" pre pubecent talk you find on most guitar sites.
And I've seen the soapbar pickups on the advertisements--I like the way they look, but have never played one.  Are they more of a humbucker or single coil sound or something in between?

Guitar Doc, PRS is my dream guitar!  I love everything about it; the body shape, the head stock...it's just so well designed.  It can sound down & dirty, but cleans up so well...I just love the things.

Of course you can spend thousands on a PRS, but an SE goes for about $600 around here & I guarantee you I will own one in the next year!

Last winter I kept my guitar in the car all day, went to band practice after work, pulled it out of the case and started playing it when it was still cold.  I was lucky in that the vibration only caused a crack in the finish which doesn't affect the sound, but the two inch crack is visable.  Learned that lesson the hard way!  Let your guitar warm up to room temprature...better yet, don't leave it in the car!

I need to print out about all of these...need to go get some paper.  And big time honesty going on here, admitting to playing Evergreen & Que Sera Sera--we must be among friends!
And I love the Battle of New Orleans! "in 1814 we took a little trip, along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty missisip...."
good stuff.
OK, one more confession..."Just between you and me", April Wine, '80's power ballad.  Miss half the B minors in that song, but I still give it a go!

For what it's worth, I tend to cheat on my B if it doesn't screw up the song too much--just forget about the B string and hit the G&D with my pinky & ring finger.  Makes it real easy to hit a lot of chords from there.  When I suck it up and do it right, I'll just bare it with my ring finger...or use the F shape at 7.  And if (when) I mess up, I look down at my guitar like it's stupid or something.
I'm being no help at all here...think I'll just be quiet now.

Here's the web site if anyone wants to take a look.  One difference; the one I played had the larrivee signature inlaid in perl at the twelfth fret--the slideshow on the website doesn't mention that.

And about the driveway--seriously, I was worried about kids tripping & falling during halloween so I HAD to bite the bullet and get it done.  Funny feeling when the driveway is worth more than the car you park on it!

Thing is, I had to have a new driveway poured yesterday---I had absolutely the worst driveway in the neighborhood.  Anyway, the cost?  You guessed it $2,500 bucks.
Should have gone with the guitar.

So I head over to Sam Ash Music at lunch yesterday to play guitars I'll never be able to afford.  I'm having fun playing this Taylor made out of solid Koa...impressing everyone with my flawless CDG pattern, when my friend / salesperson Pete says "you're a Laravee fan, you have to check out this guitar we just got in".
Then I saw her from across the room--and it was love before I even touched her.  This thing is a 40th aniversery guitar, they only made 40 of them.  Top is spruce from a 3,000 year old tree grown high in the hymalayas (don't kow how to spell that...but I made it up anyway, so it's not important).  Rosewood back & sides.  Pearl inlays...not too much, classy like all their insturments.  No electronics--straight accustic bliss.  $2,500.  I'll never take her home, but I might visit her again at lunch today...I think she likes me!

Man, what a thread....

Seems that all spouses should want to see their partner happy.  Seems that we should selflessly derive happiness from seeing our loved one happy.  Seems that selfishness leads to a lot of heartache in this world.

I'm going to try Summer Breeze tonight...and when I get to that little lead part, I'm going just make the noise since I can't play any lead!

I LOVE that line from Folsom Prison Blues....I like this line from Mercury Blues too: "Had a girl, stole her from a friend, he got lucky stole her back again".  Great song...if anyone looks that one up, throw in a D7 and a G7  during the verse--funks it up a bit.  Heck, play a B7 and A7 and then you got something!
OK, I'm headed over to Sam Ash to play at lunch...all this blues talk, I can't wait until I get home.

OK, everyone has 'em...the  songs that no one else wants to hear, but when you're in your room all by yourself you just have to bust 'em out with some real bad vocals to go allong....mine are:
Poison--Every Rose has its Thorn....I sing everything bad, but I KILL that song.
And my country set that no one wants to hear...Good Hearted Woman & Folsom Prison Blues.  If I ever want my wife to leave me, I'll just play those songs over and over.  If I closed the set with Mercury Blues she'd hit me with an iron on the way out the door.

PRS  SE.  Matte mahogony finish.  $499 at sam ash.

I can see where tabs would be helpfull when looking at lead parts, but I never understood why bother when we're talking about rhythm?  I see tabs that run 3-4 pages and all it is, is 3 fifth chords repeated over and over and over.  I say just learn the chords and be done with it.

I am not interested in messing this thing up!  There is a luthier with a great reputation not 10 minutes from my office--think I'm going to make a call.
Thanx!

I feel like a stud if i put a battery in the right way!

That was my first guitar!  Beautiful, classy looking insturment...love the way the cedar looks...the design of the headstock...even the lettering they use.  Nice, full body sound--no one tone jumps out...the sound is just this nice whole tone...I'm sure there's a better way to put that, but you know what I mean.

Good stuff SouthPaw--Thank You.
I've been the 45 year old rhythm guitarist in the youth band for two years because no one plays, so this is a good thing!

OK, I have about 6 kids in my Youth Groups at church that want to learn how to play guitar.  I thought I'd start a little begining guitar class, but this is the kicker; I'm self taught, so I know how I did it, but I don't know if that's the best way to teach my kids (mostly 13-15 year olds).  I don't plan on this thing getting to advanced (if it does, I'm certainly not the guy to teach!), but I would like to teach them some of the basics.
If any of my fellow chordians have any ideas / tips / stories / web sites / anything that might help me out, I could sure use it.
Thanks!
