For my friend Tenement Funster and other guitarists who like Joe Pass.

"Sure! I have 25 minutes to spare in order to play what must have taken Joe a lifetime to learn!"

I'm joking,  of course, but I saw this featured over to the side of TF's video of Joe playing "Ain't Misbehavin' " There's also a part 2 to this instructional video.

Enjoy!

*****COPY OF E-MAIL REPLY FROM SWEETWATER SOUND, INC.****

"Hi Bill,

I got your email this morning. Thanks!

I'll forward everything along to the right people. Thanks for your attention.

Isn't that great???!!  That would be totally cool if Sweetwater were to build a store upon our suggestion!

I will keep everyone updated! smile

Sweetwater sent me an ad today and  since we were on the topic of music stores I wrote them an e-mail and invited them here. I actually pasted that invitational  mail as a post here in this thread, but took it down. The more I thought about it, the more I convinced myself I was spamming and even though I may not have been, I decided to delete it anyway. If the good folks at Sweetwater are interested - well, they're liniked here, so let's see what happens.  If nothing else, at least they got a few "mentions", and that won't hurt their feelings, I'm sure. wink

Doug,

I really like the way you make sure no one misses your point! smile

Also, I agree with your point about the "community involvement". I can see a store like Sweetwater or Guitar Center putting on special "clinics" on strings, how to learn the fretboard, technique, etc. It's a great way for the "big name" music stores to introduce themselves, and, as I wrote earlier, the local musicians (aka "employees") will bring along their customer base (aka "friends", "acquaintances" and/or "fans").

I think we're onto something here, Doug! smile

TF,

You know, more often than not, when I come to your "showcase" threads, the talents of those you choose to portray lead me to look for more music by those artists. So it is with Mr. Joe Pass. I'm listening to the tune you linked us to as I write, and here's another fine example of how good you are at picking them!  "Ain't Misbehavin'" has always been a favorite of mine. Not just a favorite Fats Waller tune, but one of my favorite songs of all time.

Looking forward to your next choice, my friend! It's like opening a wrapped present wondering what's inside, because "One never knows, do one?" wink

Thanks

I'm seeing posts from new folks in this thread. WELCOME to the Chordie Family, uke players (ukuleleists?) You're in great company here, so let us know how it goes, what you're buying and jump right in. The music's fine!  smile

Hey Family

Carrollton, Georgia USA's population in 2016 was 27 k. Additionally, we are home to the University of West Georgia and, even though we are considered "small town USA", we enjoy multi-cultural lifestyles and religions. In short, whatever your needs, for the most part, one needn't go to Atlanta (our capital city) for anything one might need - be it a service or a product.

"For the most part"........ smile

Given the above statistics then, would it surprise you to know that Carrollton has absolutely ZERO music stores? The nearest one is 25 miles to the east of us.

As one might expect, the demise of the THREE we had are caused by the online "catalog" stores who, with very little overhead are able to sell their wares at greatly reduced prices. This includes amazon and eBay as well as Sweetwater and Musicians' Friend,  among others.

When one looks at the "lowest common denominator" (price), it would be ludicrous to pay $500.00  for an Ibanez Artcore locally, when it can be had for $325.00 online. (FYI, those are just examples; I have no idea what the actual price of an Artcore is these days).

But it isn't just product which is the problem. It's also service. Are you really going to ship your bass to Sweetwater to have them change its pickups, strings, set action, etc.? Of course not. You'll pack it into its case and drive to the nearest town with a music store to have that done. If that town happens to be 25 miles  east, well.... sucks to be me, I guess.

So what's the solution? Read on and see what you think of my idea.

Instead of being just online entities, I suggest merchants such as Sweetwater and Musicians' Friend open brick and mortar stores in towns like mine and even though the prices probably won't be anywhere close to the online ones, I think with the right promotions they could be close. Let these stores be run by local musicians not paid on commission and with decent benefits and all at once you've solved several problems in "one fell swoop":
Unemployment, the environment and  time management all benefit from this new "attitude"

"If you build it, they will come".

I'd be interested in reading your views, pro or con, on this.

Thanks

Bill

Thank you, Sir! I'm on my way to our local builder's supply store for some shelf brackets and will pick up a tube of super glue. After I posted the above, I remembered that the ER doctor I used to work with recommended the use of super glue to help "knit" together small cuts, so what you wrote about dosage makes perfect sense.

I appreciate it, Z! smile

Roger,

Dondra said to tell you, "Avoid that first doctor like the plague!" ---- Must be a medical joke. She worked 35 years as a respiratory therapist in her hospital's emergency room.

Anyway, she said your experience with that first guy sounded scary.

About scalpels: we ordered some from eBay and keep them in our little emergency kit for just such a purpose. Do they have social medicine in Portugal or are you going to be charged for those useless X-Rays?

Big hug from Dondra and a brotherly knock on the shoulder from me. smile

Got a question for you folks who use "super glue" on your finger tips.

A couple of days ago we had occasion to go into the pharmacy section of our super-market where I came across something called "Liquid Bandage" and it made me think of y'all.

The question I have is: Is "super-glue" the product of choice for ones' fingertips or is there even a difference?

Thanks

Clever indeed.

I once came in dead last (about 45 minutes after everyone else crossed the finish line) in a 10k back in the 80's.

"Don't worry, about it, Bill", said a friend. "We'll just list you as coming in first for next year.".

Your poem tells me that sometimes coming in first is overrated.  What is always important is trying.

Thanks for the reminder, Brian. smile

In my opinion, "Deliverance" was his best film. His early tv series showed a talent not so evident in his later comedic work. He was underrated and I would like to have seen him in more dramatic roles.

RIP.

Are you going to list them in the section here on Chordie,  Joey³. I probably wouldn't be able to afford one, but I do check in there a lot.

Also, will we have to change your description from "Chief Hoarder" to something else, or will you be buying more guitars at some point?

Thanks

This is beautiful, Phill! I think you probably remembered I like 3/4 time for some songs and having not yet heard you play it, I can hum it to myself in my head. Please let us know when and where it's posted, because I'm anxious to hear you perform it. I loved every line, although the ending did take me aback a little. You cheeky devil! smile

Completely forgot about the Dan Folgelberg song, Jim - a very nice rendition of one of my favorites.

Richard, I had never heard of these guys before and will make it a point to look them up as I like their sound very much. What does "dudded" mean? (I read that in the comments below the video).

It's awesome that you guys remembered those songs and being proved wrong turned out to be a good thing! I love it!

Pete, been missing you, mate. I'm not like easybeat and can't join you for a pint, so this is where you and I have to meet and chat. I'll try to show up more often.

Echoing Richard's Father's Day wish to all my mates from Down Under. This is the only song I know which was recorded in the 60's honoring Father's Day. Enjoy.

1961! We were just able to pick up WLAC-AM, (an after-dark, clear-channel blues station out of Nashville, TN) over our small transistor radio. After I began playing drums, that's where I and my bandmates got our blues training. Nice choice, Mr. Badeye!  Nice memories too. There are a couple of cd's featuring the "John R" show sponsored by Randy's Record Shop*. I found them on amazon if you're interested. Not a bad deal.

When I see lyrics such as these, they always lead me to ask if the song or poem is autobiographical, but I agree with Phill: many of us know ladies like this, which makes for interesting relationships. Question for you, easybeat: have you and Peatle ever collaborated on a work you or he might have written? I get the impression you and he live near each other, is that correct and would such a thing (singing and playing together) be possible?

Thanks

For a long time, Jim, I didn't have that wit. Now I'm cautiously optimistic that mine and Dondra's lives are settling down a bit, and feel like I can smile and try to be a little more jovial.

But seriously, you do seem to have a deep insight into what's going on in your life and in your friends' and I hope you never lose that. Many's the time I've read your words and said to myself, "Yeah! That's exactly the way I feel!"

Keep writing them, my brotha! smile

Hey WVBIKER59

One of our knowledgeable mods or admins will be along in a bit to help you with this, but it is my understanding that Chordie itself is not at fault if you happen to see tabs instead of chords. This has happened to me as well and when it does, I just google the song along with the word "chords" and usually find it that way. Here's a link to what is also one of MY favorite John Prine tunes (you have good taste!).........https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/john_prine/in_spite_of_ourselves_chords_1872988

Have fun playing and singing it! smile

One of the most natural and prolific songwriters I know. If I didn't know better, I'd say Jim's a medium of some kind.

Or an Extra-Large, at least. smile

Note left on SoundCloud. Hope it makes you smile. Reminiscent of The Who and/or Ramones. Do you take requests? I'd like to hear your version of "Blitzkrieg Bop" if and when you feel like it.

My problem with the padding on the fingers is the same only different. I have arthritic/gouty fingers which hurt when I press down on the strings. I looked up bassist's gloves on the internet and found some. When I got them, I threw them away. They helped some, but made my hand sweat. Maybe they'll help you, pulpfriction?

Keep us in the loop as to how it goes, okay, because I'm very interested. Got anything on YouTube?

Bill
PS: A long time ago, someone told me about alum helping to form callouses on my fingertips. I've never tried it, but just now did a search and came up with this site. Maybe there's something here which may help. http://www.guitartips.addr.com/tip67.html
