Ok, so I made such a pig's a$$ of explaining the song above that I thought it'd be easier to go record it and post it on my Myspace page......what an exercise in frustration that proved to be. Firstly, I have a cold so my voice sounds iffy, secondly, I experienced what can only be described as microphone "yips" and continually messed up. So this version is far from perfect but it's as good as I'm going to get tonight. Ah well.

The song is on here now:

Any thoughts / feedback much appreciated as ever.

Cheers,
Mark

Haven't written anything in ages following a hideous bout of writer's block. This is as much for cathartic purposes as anything else. Just had to get something out before I went mad. Mad I tells ya....mad!!! Ok, maybe I was a bit late......

Chordpro error: This is not a valid artistname. You will have to specify an artistname in the form {st: Artistname} in the beginning of the code.

Not a good one to explain. I'll try and record it and post it somewhere if anyone's interested in hearing it. I decided it's time to have a pop at something other than strumming away at a song......time will tell if it's been a wise departure smile

Now I'm not much of a Justin Timberlake fan admittedly, but I think this is one of those instances where a cover is better than the original.

Stumbled upon these guys on Youtube doing Lovestoned. The first 2 mins on acoustic guitar are brrrrrilliant. Have a look and see what you think.......

You can also try Spytunes if you want something more although I personally prefer the Justin Sandercoe teaching method a little better.

There's loads available so just keep looking until you find something that works for you.

I totally agree with Ken. If you think about this logically making 100 CDs and giving them out is presenting the work to very few people. There are many people like me that have cover versions on YouTube which, theoretically is available to millions. If anyone is going to hounded it will be the users of YouTube (and similar) and these sites would be closed down.

Also with YouTube many of the known artists videos on there are direct copies from their CD or TV put up by fans, now that, I am sure, is a violation of copyright, and what gets done about it - NOTHING.

I am quite happy to leave my cover versions on YouTube and hand out my CDs, I think you have nothing to worry about.

Roger

I actually got a rather sniffy email from Youtube telling me that my cover of Brown Eyed Girl was in contravention of copyright laws and they removed it. I can only assume that Van the Man's lawyers are a bit sharper than some of the other artists I've covered. Maybe they have more time on their hands these days since he mellowed a bit. Either way, I thought it was a wee bit harsh....but fair enough. Video was removed and I lived to tell the tale. I'll keep putting music on there and remove it by exception rather than as the rule.

I know you're going to get about a million replies to your note and I can tell you now that there will be one key message. Practice practice practice!!!

Seriously, there is nothing more frustrating than trying to learn to play guitar, but as you seem to have realised, it is soooooo worth it.

Keep doing what you're doing. Practice as much as you possibly can and don't get dis-heartened. When I was learning I got to the point where I thought I'd never be able to play anything and then suddenly, bang! A tune came out of nowhere. You'll experience that too, just be patient. There will be loads of milestones that you'll pass as you learn. Nailing that chord change, getting a new strum pattern down, playing your first entire song. Then as you progress, getting into your barre chords, singing along with the guitar, playing without looking. Believe me, none of this will be too far away, just don't try to run before you can walk and keep at it. Everyone on here has either gone through or is going through what you are at the moment. And absolutely everyone on here is still trying to learn something to do with playing. That's what makes it so great!

But if support and helpful advice is what you need then one thing's guaranteed: You're in the right place for it.

Good luck!!

Is it just me or does anyone else say it phonetically in their head?

Edgubuh!!

I've been working on a load of really sugary pop style songs....for the females at the house parties I play at.....aye, ok, I like them all too. Fun to sing, DON'T JUDGE ME!!!!

Take That: Rule the World
Justin Timberlake: What goes around
One Republic: Stop & Stare (just posted on Youtube: Check out budwiser1877 tongue )

I shall now cower in shame at the cheese-fest above!

Scrimmy, I was just about to post the same kinda question as you. The responses have been brilliant, absolutely spot on and a load of great points made.

I hope you do it / have done it. I'm also feeling that urge to get up and do it in front of more than just friends and family so it's good to know I'm not alone.

Lemme know how you get on, be interesting to see if we both go through with it or not. I remember the first time I played in front of people....think I darn near soiled myself so I'm pretty sure I'd need a nappy for playing in public, but by all acounts it'd be worth it. So my advice to you (for what it's worth) is, get the bicycle clips on, take a deep breath and go for it. You've got the talent, so just go do it. Imagine how proud your little girl will be when she sees you up on a stage or something similar. Well worth the risk surely?!

Good luck matey!

Great idea GP. Just joined. Looking forward to seeing what everyone's up to.

Cheers

Got dragged to see Ibrahim Ferrer (sp?) by my ex a few years ago. Wasn't into it at all....not a huge fan of all the Buena Vista Social Club thing but it was an incredible night and a ridiculously impressive show for such an old guy, although he did wheel on a multitude of guests. I sat there absolutely spellbound for about 2 and a half hours......

To this day I have no idea what the hell they were singing about but I'm verrry glad I went.

I think it's good to broaden the musical horizons every so often and get a wee taste of things you wouldn't normally go for.

Well thanks guys. For all your input. I ended up writing a song. It's pretty good nothing chart topping or anything like that. Well thanks anyway. C ya later. Might be coming back for more advice.

You fancy posting it in the song writing forum Matt? That's what a lot of the guys on here do. Always very positive feedback from any submissions and some of the more experienced guys n gals may even be able to suggest things to build on for your next song.

Howdy folks,

There is a petition currently underway to gain support to have Royal Mail commission some special stamps as a tribute to the British service men and women who have lost their lives in Iraq.

I appreciate that this could easily become a political debate but quite frankly I could care less about all that side of it, I personally think this is a great idea and would really appreciate as many people as possible signing up to support this too.

If it's not for you then that's fair enough, I wouldn't expect anyone to add their details to something they can't or don't support. All I would ask is that this thread doesn't devolve into a debate on the rights and wrongs of the war in Iraq.

The link for anyone who wants to sign this petition is:

Thanks for your help.

Not dumb.....great topic!

That said, no idea who would play me.....if I hadn't posted links where I'm visible then I would try and suggest Brad Pitt etc to play me.....sadly, I think perhaps I'll need to choose someone more believable. Maybe Kevin Spacey?

Theme tune, hmmmmmmmm. Have to say, I love Lust for Life in Trainspotting so I'd maybe just rip that off.

Your kids must be constantly touched by the songs you write for and about them. Another cracker here. Well done.

Agree with Old Doll Jeff, think it'd be good to hear a recording of this one. You think you'll be able to persuade your son (is it Tim?) to duet with his old man then?

Bit of father / son competition on the vocals can only make for a good recording tongue

Hiya Old Doll, no you have the right guy. Been playing for nearly two years or so now, something like that anyway.

Glad you liked it and thanks for the comments as always.
