Round Midnight - Thelonious Monk
-----------------------------------------------
arranged by Howard Wright
H.Wright@astro.cf.ac.uk
I worked out these chords by listening to two versions of the song
I've got - one with Monk playing solo at the piano, and another with
him and drums, bass, horns etc.
The two versions aren't exactly the same - but I've tried to find
the common ground between them to get a 'basic' arrangement.
You can play around with the chords, jazzing them up a bit, but the ones
I'll give at the start are the 'basics'.
Within the versions I've got, there's a lot of variation in the chords.
Especially Monk's playing at the piano - he seems to love adding flat
5ths to every other chord !!!
In fact, if you want to increase the 'Monk factor', instead of playing
straight 7ths, play 7-5 chords instead.
E.g in the intro chords instead of : Am7-5 D7 Gm7-5 C7 etc
You could play : Am7-5 D7-5 Gm7-5 C7-5
Intro :
--------
[Am7-5] [D7] [Gm7-5] [C7]
E---------8------8-------------------------6------6------------| B---4-6-8----8-6----8-6-7------------2-4-6----6-4---6-4-5------| G--------------------------------------------------------------| D--------------------------------------------------------------| A--------------------------------------------------------------| E--------------------------------------------------------------|
[Fm7-5] [Bb7]
E--------4------4-------------------------------------------------------| B--0-2-4----4-2----4-2-3------------------------------------------------| G-----------------------------------------------------------------------| D-----------------------------------------------------------------------| A-----------------------------------------------------------------------| E-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
Verse 1 :
----------
[Ebm] [Ebm/D] [Ebm/Db] [Cm6] [Abm7] [Db7] [Ebm6] [Bm7] [E7] [Bbm7] [Eb7]
E----------6-----------------6--------------6--9--8-------------------------| B--------6---7--------------------9-------7----------------10---9---9----8--| G------8---------------8----------------8---------------8-------------------| D----8--------------8-------------------------------------------------------| A---------------------------------------------------------------------------| E---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
Abm7 Db9 Ebm* Ab7-5 Cm7-5 F7 Bb7-5
E--------11---14---13----------------------------------------------| B-----12---------------14---11-------------------------------------| G--13--------------------------------------11---10----8h9----------| D------------------------------------------------------------------| A------------------------------------------------------------------| E------------------------------------------------------------------|
Verse 2 :
----------
Almost exactly the same - but play Gbmaj7 in the 3rd line
instead of Ebm*
[Ebm] [Ebm/D] [Ebm/Db] [Cm6] [Abm7] [Db7]
[Ebm6] [Bm7] [E7] [Bbm7] [Eb7]
[Abm7] [Db9] [Gbmaj7] [Ab7-5]
[Cm7-5] [F7] [Bb7-5]
One small variation you can try is on the second line of chords.
Instead of staying on Ebm6 then going to Bm7, you could try this :
[Ebm6] [Ab7] [Bm7] [E7] [Bbm7] [Eb7]
The rest of the song repeats these chord changes - but breaks them up a bit
and varies them as the solos go over the top.
